I'm glad you guys are having fun. So am I. Btw, your characters should discuss what their next step should be (especially now that you know both bounties are connected...)
@Cwest. No I don't mind, and I meant to be clearer about that. I intended to have him ic ask Hilda where the entrances were. Presumably the mayor's place is a Big Fancy House—by Berth standards anyway—and may have involved at least one secret entrance. Thankfully, stage one wasn't that convoluted...
Also, yes. Staying at the house is what I indicated. (I'll start clearing up things...)

Look with century eyes... With our backs to the arch And the wreck of our kind We will stare straight ahead For the rest of our livesIt's OK guys, we are all learning on the go here. That's why I made the first adventure rather simple. But the next one won't be so easy.
Okay, it looks like I'm going to have to eat my words again (*munch munch* tastes like chicken )
What I mean is, I need to revise the rules *again* I need to post in the game more often. Oh well, we are all still in "learning mode." The Players are still limited to posting by turns, OK?
Wooh, combat!
Anyhow, on to mechanics- you probably know all this, but I'm still going to state it for posterity's sake.
Whistler is duel-wielding, and using a rapier in his main hand, and a dagger- a light weapon, which makes this possible- in his other claw. He's sneak attacking the herder because the rest of the party is right there, therefore giving him the opportunity to strike while his back is turned; he's also attempting to deal non-lethal damage to the guy.
Wooze looks at Glass with a 'please take her away' lookOk, I figure combat will be like this:
- both PCs and monsters act in order of their dexterity, from highest to lowest.
- everyone gets one attack or other action each turn unless they use an ability that allows more.
- The GM decides when attacks hit, spells take effect etc. This will be based on level, equipment etc.
- Hit points (of HD, damage, healing etc.) will be the average possible (plus any bonuses) so for example a weapon that does 1d4 +1 damage always does 3 points.
- Advantage and Disadvantage counts as exceptions to all the above. You could, for example, use your advantage to do maximum damage. Just remember, once you use it, it's gone!
This OK by everyone? I'm still open to changes. As I said, we're still in "early game mode".

One of the combat options in the rules (I am not at home so I can't remember if it's the player or DM book) is initiative-by-sides which might be easier to manage in an RP.
That way there's a clear enemy phase and an "us" phase, and initiative determines your turn order on your side, but hopefully combat will go quicker without having to have constant back and forth.
Thanks nman I'll look it up.

When you say "tried" in the post, does that mean they already rolled for the attack and missed, or what?
Come to think of it, wouldn't Mialee go before the animals? She has the second highest Initiative, and the highest animal initiative was 14. (The raven.) Come to think of it, Gabatim is tied with the raven, and our friendly neighborhood centaur should go before the other two animals.

Wooze looks at Glass with a 'please take her away' lookIt's trying to eat the mantis, the attack is unresolved yet.
Yep.

Oh, you mean that's what they're doing on their turns or something?
Wooze looks at Glass with a 'please take her away' lookWait so whose turn is it?
You're supposed to go in order of your dexterity... but I guess we can save that for when tackling a single monster? If you want to attack your foes now, go ahead. Just remember: once you post, wait until the others do so as well.
And in case you haven't noticed, I'm editing in the animal stats in my post above as well.
edited 10th Aug '17 2:31:24 PM by Sijo
That's why I was confused because it seemed like all the animals were going now.
edited 10th Aug '17 2:44:43 PM by nman
The original idea was that they would go when their dexterity allowed (most likely after all the PCs.)
Note: for reference, in combat your turns will be:
- Whistler (17)
- Mialee (16)
- Gabatim (14)
- Fyterion (12)

About that outcome...what of the Raven? Or is that not going to update until Sergey posts?
Look with century eyes... With our backs to the arch And the wreck of our kind We will stare straight ahead For the rest of our livesYep, I'm waiting for Sergey. One day at the most, thought.
What Whistler did there was use his "free" action to sheathe his rapier, and then threw his daggers using what would be an action and a bonus action. I believe that drawing a dagger to throw is part of the attack, like nocking an arrow or loading a sling.
Wooze looks at Glass with a 'please take her away' lookEh, I'm going to allow it, on account of this being such a weak, slow creature.
But I hope you guys realize I made this encounter intentionally easy (and funny ). Don't expect it to be that way from now on!
Ok, now I need you guys to decide if the rat and the goat are dead.
And what you do now.
Since Mialee got the last shot on both of them, I'd say they're definitely dead.
Probably better to just assume never going for non-lethal damage unless I specify it, for her.
edited 10th Aug '17 7:00:52 PM by nman
That's a good assumption. Though for alignment purposes, killing is only wrong if the target is sentient. And even then, in this world it is often a sad necessity (see: orc raiders.)
Well Mialee blasted the goat after it took two daggers and a crossbow bolt. If it still lives...it may be worth it just for the explanation, and for having a goat (and a source of income on the adventure trail). If there's a screw logic option, I can see Gabatim trying to get the goat back up and about.
The rat took an eldritch blast head-on, and it surviving is equally implausible but much less ridiculous. Can't really see a reason for it to live.
As for what to do next, wake the herder up (after he's safely bound) and ask him why he was picking up jewels and bread with highly trained animals, and the same places at that. (If he has some great grudge against Thomas and Mitchell, we may want to know...). Plus there's the issue of where the jewels went.
Then (depending on his answer) frog-march before both to make apologies and reparations. (Well, Gabatim would do that anyway, but he's the only lawful...)

Thanks, man. I'm really liking this so far, by the way!
It took all my willpower to have Whistler not look at the raven, open his arms for a hug, and exclaim "brother!"
My current theory for what's going on is that a magic user has been using a familiar/familiars to steal jewels and bread. I'm not sure what his motives are OOC yet.
