Sorting out Missing The Good Stuff

After searching for something like Offscreen Moment of Awesome, but in-universe, and posting Launch Pad entry for that, I eventually got directed to Missing the Good Stuff trope, which seems more or less what I needed. However, the trope description seems rather narrow (even though examples there seemed broader than the description would suggest). At the same time, I learnt there was yet another Launch Pad entry related to similar thing, though not quite the same.

So, at the moment we have:

  • existing (if currently obscure) trope Missing the Good Stuff, which has a bunch of examples of its own (even though cross-wicking there seems to be hit and miss), but quite a narrow definition
  • a Missing Out Launch Pad entry, somewhat redundant, as it turns out, but with a broader definition
  • a Missed The Fun Launch Pad entry, with a good bunch of examples and somewhat narrow definition, but covering many common cases

What should we do with all that?

I suggest we do the following:

  • with Missing the Good Stuff:
    • broaden the description to include all cases when a character is absent when fun/epic/interesting/noteworthy events happen and a point is made about that (e.g. "I wish I had been there" or "you should have seen that") or the act of missing out is otherwise relevant
    • also, maybe broaden the description to include cases when the character is around when the good stuff happens, but they can't witness it fully (e.g. hearing a wild party behind the locked door); or maybe it should be a subtrope altogether?
    • do some cross-wicking work, because right now it seems there are a bunch of examples without corresponding entry on work page, or work page entries without corresponding examples
  • with Missing Out Launch Pad entry
  • with Missed The Fun Launch Pad entry
    • maybe make a subtrope of Missing the Good Stuff out of that? That usage (someone arrives late to the scene and misjudges the situation) can be notable enough to deserve its own trope
    • if we indeed decide on making it a subtrope, I suggest it should be renamed somehow; "Missed the Fun" sounds more like broad "someone was not present when important stuff happened" rather than specific "someone missed important events, arrived late to the scene and misjudged the situation"
    • if we decide it's not worth a subtrope, move the examples over to Missing the Good Stuff and discard

What do you think? Does it sound good? Or maybe you have a better idea to sort out all that?

(I hope there aren't any more tropes/launch pad entries we're missing here)

This kind of sounds like a TRS issue to me. Redefining and merging ideas.

I was going to start a TRS thread on this, but it's at its max of 50 threads at the moment. I know this thread is old, but here we go.

I agree the description of Missing the Good Stuff needs expansion. The very short description only mentions missing live TV broadcasts, but many of the examples (for disclosure, I have added some) are about missing other significant events, such as attending or playing in sports, births, or the character in The Day of the Triffids misses the spectacular meteor show, because he is blindfolded.

I think the description also needs to mention how missing broadcasts are less significant nowadays, because of "on-demand TV" being much more accessible.
