There's no way to know for sure since she's very discreet about her personal life, but it's likely. Lots of Italian immigrants came here after slavery was abolished and they needed "free" workers at the coffee plantations. Althought it is just as likely that she may descend from Italian immigrants that came here after either of the World Wars. That's how my dad's family ended up here, after all.

So you have been to here before? Where exactly have you been to?

I was there during vacation! I went to Foz do Iguazu and other city I dont remember the name of. It was beautiful, very clean...but I didnt have much fun because the trip was so stressful because I went with a touring group. Never go with a touring group!

Also, I feel like a jerk! Poor Vanessa, poor girl doesnt need nosy people asking about her lineage lol. I was just curious.

So you are of italian lineage? That's awesome! Do you have an italian name too? Tell me in a PM for privacy reasons lol.

And strangely I loved Salve Jorge despite all the gunfire and violence, same as El Señor De Los Cielos. There's something that makes it not hit as close to home as Bajo el mismo cielo. Maybe its because the protagonist is a poor family man who is very sympathetic and the villains are despicable. But in Globo, the villains are ALSO despicable... I dunno.

I have been there too, also during vacation! It truly is a breathtaking place and thankfully I was just with my family and not with a tour group!

But since you traveling in Paraná, maybe the other city was Curitiba? That's the biggest and the other popular city there

Brains and hearts are just weird, I guess? Sometimes you just can't explain why exactly you like something, you just ... do!

Yeah! I love that about human nature. Its mysterious!

Also Regra do Jogo seems like Brazil's answer to Game Of Thrones. I cant wait for it.

Well, I don't really know if it is comparable to Game of Thrones but it still is really awesome and you should definitely check it out when comes out there.

Have you watched much of Vivir a Vida on that Paravision channel? And if so, how are you liking it so far?

I havent watched it. I wanted to but I missed too many episodes to make sense of the plot now.

You told me Paulinha from Amar a Vida was there too, no? Or at least her actress. She's evil on that one isnt she?

Awww, that's too bad!sad Do they ever do re-runs on that channel? I hope they do one of that novela someday, so that you can watch it.

Yep, Klara Castanho, who later went on to play Paulinha, played Rafaela, the first child villainess in a Brazilian novela. I have to say, it probably would be pretty jarring to first watch her as the rather adorable Paulinha and then see her as the rather bratty Rafaela. The effect would be probably lessened if the characters were dubbed by different actresses, which they probably would, since both novelas are running at the same time and Klara was much younger when she played Rafaela, but still.

Today Aline almost killed Ciza. I cant wait for Cesar to be moronic and blind and buy into her excuses. Aline is so evil she BURIED HER AUNT IN THE BACK YARD.

Yeah, just when you think she can't possible get any worse, she just ups and goes bury her own aunt on a shallow grave. And ain't it just said that you're so certain, and probably completely right, that Cesar will fall for her devious tricks again?sad

Dios Mio. I love Niko but he's sooooo STUPID. He ignores Felix's warnings that Amaryllis is still an evil bitch trying to steal Fabrizio. God Bless his Christian forgiving heart. This novela sures loves Arbitrary drama. And poor Paulinha! She went to see Ciza at the Hospital. Why was Niko so upset at Felix? Did he use Bichinha to refer to him?

Yeah, bless his kind heart, but that was really, REALLY STUPID! >_< I think I don't need to tell that was the sort of thing that allowed that devious woman to kidnap the baby.

As far as I know, only Eron was foul enough to make use of that rather nasty word. If I remember it correctly, Felix called him stupid.

In the dub Felix called Niko, a "Marica Burra" (Burro is spanish slang for dumb). Also,Felix is finally going to show Paloma the pics and the pendrive from Mariah. I hope this is the start of Bruno and Paloma's reconciliation. Is Ciza going to be alright? I know Rebecca gets rescued but Im scared for Poor Ciza. She took care of Paulinha and the baby she doesnt deserve this!

Honestly, I don't know. I remember that Felix called him 'burro' which incidentally also means stupid or dumb in Portuguese, but I don't remember if there was any other insult throw along it

And yeah, the pictures and Mariah's recording should pretty much get them back together, so yay for that!grin Finally!

I'm pretty sure that Ciça should be OK, so you don't have to worry much about that, fortunately.

Ah! That fancy C letter In Ciza's name! (I dont know how to type it) I love that!

One Phantasy Star game had a Hunting Knife which due to lack of Fancy C was translated to Poop Knife. I guess you already know which Portuguese word got corrupted. Can you tell now and win a No-Prize award.

That's what we call cê-cedilha (c-cedilla in English). It's used to sound like an s before certain vowels. Apparently it got removed from the Spanish alphabet and replaced with z, which probably why you can't type and certainly they changed Ciça to Ciza.

LOL that's too easy! If the original name was Hunting Knife, then the translation should have been Faca de Caça, but if you inadvertly replace that ç with a regular c ...[lol]

I know its off topic, but are you the one who edited the Maria la del Barrio tearjerker page? I ask because we seem to be the only tropers who care about telenovelas.

OK, so I checked that page's editing history and it seems that there is one trope doing most of the editing there, their name being Lorialet. Should we try to contact them to see if they like Brazilian novelas as well and/or would like to join this thread?

So, there's this old novela that Globo is re-running right now in their afternoon timeslot just for that. tl it is old enough for it to still have been from the era when the prime time for novelas was on the 8PM timeslot, though it was one of the last two that ran on that timeslot. The name of the novela is Caminho das Indias and it was a pretty good one from what I remember. Have you seen that one?

Glad to hear it! That novela really was amazing. There was wonderful acting all around and they did a pretty excellent job of showing a different culture.

I know right? I love that!

Also Im sad that Globo novelas are almost NEVER rerun in my country. Sure Cor do Pecado and O Clone got their reruns, but I doubt we will ver see Caminho das Indias, Salve Jorge or Amar A Vida again.

Aw, that's a really pity. I do hope that at least of them get re-runs over there though. And it's funny that you should mention Cor do Pecado, because that one sure got a lot of re-runs over here. I didn't watch it back its original run in 2004 and yet I still managed to watch it at least two times through re-runs.

Speaking about excellent novelas about other cultures, I just remembered another one: Joia Rara. Now, admitedly, I didn't watch much of this one, unfortunately, but I have heard and read a lot of good things about it, it won an Emmy for Best Telenovela and they casted talented young actress Mel Maia in a VERY major role, so you can't go wrong with that one.
