I noticed how odd it was that there's a whole topic page for Live Performances, but there isn't a general discussion thread for musicals.

To kick things off, what musicals are you guys interested in?

I, for one, heard this song for literally the first time on Pandora and I absolutely adored it even though I had no idea where it came from or anything.

I found out it's from this musical called "Fun Home", which is apparently based on the life of Alison Bechdel. Well, they always say you learn something new every day, right?

Lately I'm really hooked on Assassins. My university also just did a production of Into the Woods, which I saw. It was quite good. Narrator was a standout. I noticed that they cut the role of Cinderella's Father, and the Narrator made a note that he had died. I guess that kinda makes sense, given that Cinderella's Father doesn't do anything.

I've been curious about musicals for a while. I saw the 2003 version of The Music Man recently (and I liked it), I've seen some other musical movies, as well as some productions when I was in high school, and a performance of Theatre/Oklahoma! when I was in junior high.

My brother just arrived in Big Applesauce and wants to see a Musical. What do you recommend? That is not sold out by default. Fucking Hamilton, why are you so awesome.

I find it amusing that they tried to justify Johnathan Pryce playing The Engineer in Miss Saigon (great performance regardless of controversy) but no one points out that Thuy was also played by a guy in Yellowface in the original London production and he didn't have a Eurasian excuse.

Hey you!! Say his name!

(Candyman?)

Not him, stupid! The other scary guy who gets summoned when you say his name!

(Bloody Mary?)

RRRGGGHHH! NO! I said "guy"! GUY!

(...Beetlejuice?)

BINGO!

After pulling off their last big show on March 10, 2020, Beetlejuice the Musical is coming back with a vengeance on April 8th, 2022 at the Marquis Theatre!

Burt Bacharach and Steven Sater's Some Lovers released a new concept album this week. It reunites various recent pairs of costars to do the duets and brings on some big names for the solos:

The album features Colton Ryan and Molly Gordon (co-stars from Alice by Heart), Betsy Wolfe and Tracie Thoms (co-stars from Falsettos), Ethan Slater and Lilli Cooper (co-stars from Sponge Bob Square Pants and Edge of the World), Jonathan Groff and Lea Michele (co-stars from Spring Awakening and GLEE), Katrina Lenk and Ari'el Stachel (co-stars from The Band's Visit), Conrad Ricamora and Ashley Park (co-stars from The King and I), Christy Altomare and Derek Klena (co-stars from Anastasia), Ramin Karimloo (Les Misérables), Jennifer Holliday (Dreamgirls), Kristin Chenoweth (Promises, Promises), Santino Fontana and Laura Osnes (co-stars from Rodgers + Hammerstein's Cinderella and My Marcello), and Graham Phillips and Auli'i Cravalho (co-stars from The Little Mermaid Live!).

Definitely a nice warm and fuzzy afternoon listen.

Broadway is shutting down the Phantom of the Opera in February.

I'll always hate that musical for stealing the thunder from Into the Woods.

That said, it had a good run. 35 years is nothing to sniff at, even by me.

[up][up]

It closed a few weeks ago. Am very sad. Caught it back in January. My first musical and one of my favorite stories since I was a kid.
