I think I'd prefer to let it be its own thing.
Dopants: He meant what he said and he said what he meant, a Ninety is faithful 100%.But then we'd never see Dresden, Tavi, Varg and Butters fighting Denarian'd Vord on airships! And that would be terrible!
That's why God invented fan-fics.
Seriously though I don't see any links to his previous work. I did get a machine vibe from the Enemy so I wouldn't rule out that theory in a general way and the warriorborns and sentient cats do scream of genetic engineering.

Trump delenda estOr Malks getting it on with... You know, does this mean it's possible the Dresden-verse has Malk-scion catgirls?
....it has now? *frantically scribbles*
(Ok, I've been using an Ailuranthrope Template for DFRP for a while now, ie Cats instead of wolves. Those come pretty close to Warriorborn I suspect.
"You can reply to this Message!"So, it's basically a bit like Ar Tonelico?
Also, Zerg, despite their penchant for Rush, finally has learn Yeerk/ Dark Archon-like tactics. They called Infestors.
So literally the Vord?
Dopants: He meant what he said and he said what he meant, a Ninety is faithful 100%.Well, here's a link. Rather than vord taker/ yeerk, they're closer to Bug Brain in starship troopers, combined with your usual Umbrella's failed experiment. They got very infectious spit that traps people and biologically chew them alive, and bad habit of stuffing themselves with poor marines that then got regurgitated back to their poor, unsuspecting enemies. And then neural parasites, which basically variant of Vord taker: trades longevity for total mind control (at least in PVP, Campaign Infestor is the whole other hardball). And they can move while burrowing. Sweet dreams.
I´m not sure about the necro policy, so i will justhope it´s ok to post something
I just finished the aeronauts windlass and generaly liked the book (although i´ve found gwen really annoying up to the point where she started working in the machine room) and i have to know what grimm did for which he considered it worth it to leave his career behind.
Also why does this book count as steam punk? To me it read like a normal fantasy book (with a not so normal setting).
Its Crystal Punk which is (sorta) a sub-gengre of Steampunk
"You can reply to this Message!"I thought an important aspect of steam punk is that there is no magic, only technology, which may or may not go into Clarke's Third Law terretoriy. But here there are weapons you fire not by pulling a trigger but with your mind and ships with a mind of themself (Etherialist also seem to be magical but they could also be modified somehow like the warriorborn)
I´m learning about entirely new genre i´ve never heard of before
People keep trying to pigeonhole this series into a Fantasy Counterpart Culture version of the Victorian Age but to me there's at least as much resemblance to the Age Of Sail, especially in the main spires rival nation.

Trump delenda estOh its definitely there. I have the theory Butcher started to write this after binging Honor Harrington too much, because if you read both there are a lot of parallels.
"You can reply to this Message!"Given that he has plans for a story plans for Maticoran Marine and his treecat names Sarge and is only waiting for Weber to invite him to contribute to one of the short story collections, I think it could almost be taken as a given.
..........shit, I want this story. I WANT IT SO MUCH.
"You can reply to this Message!"I assume those are Honor Harrington things?
Dopants: He meant what he said and he said what he meant, a Ninety is faithful 100%.Yes.
"You can reply to this Message!"Ugh, tree cats. They should be nuked from orbit.
So, I assume you're more dog person?
Actually, yes.
But seriously, the whole tree cats thing was way too "This character is special!" for me.
I'm sticking with my theory this is another branch of the Vord, whose adaptive evolution and lack of food on the surface due to whatever humanity used to try to kill them that lead to needing the spires, has led them towards Yeerk-type mind control instead of Starcraft Zerg Rush tactics.
