The Chinese leadership once held a conference to complain that the Americans were making better films set in China than China was.

I'm not even joking they considered censoring the film on the grounds that Americans were "kidnapping the minds of the Chinese youth".

We've made films set in China?

Countless

To start with, Mulan, Kung Fu Panda and its sequel(s), Rush Hour(though that was a collaboration)

that conference was specifically complaining about Kung Fu Panda though. Because it was genuinely amazing.

I think a large part of it is that American film studios like Dreamworks and Pixar take children and children's stories seriously. They put huge budgets into their movies and hire the best talent. I don't know if Chinese studios do the same.

Also China has all sorts of restrictions on what their films say. And artists as a rule tend to be critical of society in general, which in the US just makes people find them pretentious or annoying, but in China it can lead to them being imprisoned, killed, or exiled.

Apparently the Confucius prize is something other than China throwing a temper tantrum at the Nobel Peace Prize. I'm not seeing it.

China professor's wife-sharing proposal sparks ire A Chinese professor's controversial suggestion that poorer men could share wives has sparked debate online on how to solve China's gender imbalance.

China Xinjiang Daily editor sacked after 'anti-terror criticism' The official Communist Party watchdog also promised to prosecute Zhao Xinwei for "serious discipline breaches", which generally refers to corruption. His paper covered the restive western region that has seen deadly clashes between police and ethnic Uighurs. Mr Zhao is alleged to have "improperly discussed" party policies in the region, including combating terrorism. The former editor is accused of failing to follow the party line on separatism, religion, extremism and other sensitive issues His "words and deeds were not in line with the centre or regional party committee", a statement on the watchdog's website said. It went on to say that he had "publicly made comments in opposition". Mr Zhao has been expelled from the party and his case has been passed to the legal authorities, the watchdog said. In recent months, China has brought in new rules tightening restrictions on criticism of party policy.

Can Chinese migrants integrate in Africa?

The older generation is aloof and keep to themselves, but the younger generation is more engaged and friendly and keen to fit in.

Kek. Even the Communist Party considered him excessive after the Cultural Revolution. However, they managed to put the blame on Mao's wife and the Gang of Four. Largely to make sure that Mao wasn't seen as the real culprit, since the Party has to seem infallible.

I think a lot of things that Westerners don't understand is that Mao was a hero to the commoner. He lived like a commoner. His clothes were patched. He ate the same food his soldiers did. He had a large number of policies with disastrous effects, but you have to remember before him people were already starving and desperate. Over the course of his "reign" life expectancy nearly doubled(though that may be simply due to the fact that before there was war and after there was largely peace). He also won a large number of military victories, including (at least according to his propaganda) against the mighty, untouchable United States(China likes to tell itself the stalemate in Korea and the Communist victory in Vietnam were mostly its doing, which isn't wrong, necessarily).

He also made it a personal point to romanticize the farmer as a sort of "ideal". He made many poems about them, and he was quite an accomplished poet. His eloquence is something he was rather famous for, even his political enemies in China concede that.

So my point is, it didn't surprise my mother when I told her about the gilded statue. As awful as much of his reign was, and as authoritarian as it became, he was still a hero to the common chinaman. Especially out in the rural areas.

[up] Saying that he won the Chinese victories in Korea stretches a bit too far - don't Peng Duhai and the generals in the field see more worthy of that praise?

[up]It's been a good while since I last checked, but the death of his son Anying was claimed to be proof of Mao's dedication to fighting the "imperialists". I wonder if current Chinese opinion of the Norks has changed that.

I have disagreed with her a lot, but comparing her to republicans and propagandists of dictatorships is really low. - An idiot
