Finally! Someone asked this! Nevertheless, this question still makes me think hard despite already seeing this question appearing on forums a lot.

Don't expect me to list a lot of unexpected choices. I'll just list down the most obvious ones.

  • Joni Mitchell - Blue
  • Fever Ray - When I Grow Up
  • Neutral Milk Hotel - Oh Comely
  • Madonna - Frozen
  • Massive Attack - Unfinished Sympathy
  • Bjork - Bachelorette
  • Nirvana - Something in the Way
  • Radiohead - Motion Picture Soundtrack (obviously just one of many depressing Radiohead songs)
  • Billie Holiday - Strange Fruit

For some reason "some nights" by fun is a song that makes me cry. Also, "hero" by family of the year has a very sad tune to it

  • "Whiskey Lullaby" by Brad Paisley and Alison Krauss
  • "Where've You Been" and "Standing Knee Deep in a River (Dying of Thirst)" by Kathy Mattea
  • "If You Don't Wanna Love Me" by Cowboy Troy and Sarah Buxton (proof that Country Rap can be amazing)
  • "One Last Time" by Dusty Drake
  • "Laughed Until We Cried" by Jason Aldean

I'm sure I'll think of more.

Sick and Disgusting by Beartooth was the only song that has ever made me cry, at least for as long as I can remember. Keep in mind I first heard this song like a few weeks ago. Just listen to it.

"some nights" by fun

This one doesn't make me cry, but it's a very emotionally stirring song so I can easily see it.

"Where've You Been" by Kathy Mattea

Oh Jesus...this one's a killer. If you have or had a family member with Alzheimer's or some other dementia and you don't at least choke up a little with that last verse, you're a true stoic. After my mom's mom died from Alzheimer's, I couldn't listen to it for a long time.

The ones that immediately come to mind for me are:

  • The Raybon Brothers' cover of "Butterfly Kisses"...the first time I heard it, it hit something just right and I bawled like a baby...and I listened to it while I was typing this and cried a bit just now. Oy! It's his voice, there's tons of emotion without being mawkish or melodramatic. Side note - I don't like the original at all.
  • "That's My Job" by Conway Twitty. It's the last verse that does it...I've never had a really close relationship with my dad so when I'm in the right mood it hits like a ton of bricks.
  • The version of "Will the Circle Be Unbroken" on the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band's second album of that name. Part of it is the sheer power of this particular version, part of it is knowing that so many of the people who sang on it are gone now.
  • "Chiseled in Stone" by Vern Gosdin. I can't remember it ever making me actually cry, but be damned if it doesn't come close.

[up]agree on Butterfly Kisses. Marty Raybon has an amazing voice, which is why I liked Shenandoah so much.

Exile Vilify by The National just sounds so, so hopeless.
Unfinished Business by White Lies is sad, but in a totally different way. There's all sorts of sad to be had with music and that's the great thing about it.

Well, this sounds interesting. My list has songs that have made me cry because of sadness/awesome/beauty and or me momentarily being a pussy.

  • Lost in the New Real, especially if I've listened to the whole album in one sitting
  • My House On Mars by the Ayreon project
  • The Eye of Ra -the live version- by the Star One project, especially the very last part of the song
  • Sabaton, quite a few songs by them
  • Portals of Light and Hear Me Pray by Falconer
  • At least once an album, Orden Ogan just manages to make me emotional
  • Call to Arms and Ballad of the Working Man, by Saxon

Epilogue by The Antlers is pretty emotionally devastating. re: Stacks by Bon Iver is also a for sure tearjerker. Of course, they both arrive at the end of two very powerful records.

They have maimed & imprisoned the divine king! Is it any wonder that the world sickens and dies?

Watchmojo made a video of the Top 10 Songs That Make You Cry. It's up to you to decide whether their choices are predictable entry-level material or essential classics. At least the people of Watchmojo didn't resort to sappy love songs. That actually surprised me.

All Opera songs. I hate them, they end in high, long notes, it's fucking sad, and it's loud. I CRY.

Oh, god, soooo many. Although my top three are "Porcelain" by Marianas Trench, "Skin and Bones" also by Marianas Trench, and "Running to the Edge of the World" by Marilyn Manson (Mainly because that's what my girlfriend always sings to me).

Advance towards me, brethren.

Exile Vilify by The National just sounds so, so hopeless.
It's even sadder in the context of Portal 2, which is what it was written for. After the end of the game, it applies to every major character, but it would be a spoilers to say how.

For me, I'll have to say "F**king Perfect" by P!nk and "Mean" by Taylor Swift. The list will be much, much longer once I finally listen to this sad shipping playlist I've compiled (from a Tumblr user with the same OTP).
