I might have too look back on the Messner-Loebs run...but reminding me of the art, and OranaArtemis makes me not want. I also recall not liking the way Taco Whiz was set up(though finding humor in it), or Joker being in Boston at all.
I'll still put it on my to do list, so I can defend/criticize it more accurately.
Yeah, as established in the Perez run, Hippolyta was drugged, enslaved and raped by Heracles and his men just like the other Amazons. In Messner-Loebs' retelling, Hippolyta is so in love with Heracles that she allows him to enslave the other Amazons while he does her no harm before reluctantly turning on him.
Wonder Woman is not Messner-Loebs' best work.

Oh that is somehow worse than New 52 Hippolyta
"I am Alpharius. This is a lie."Like I said, Messner-Loebs reimagined Hippolyta as a much shadier character. The guy's work frequently dealt with themes of class, with a very acerbic attitude towards the wealthy and powerful - hence, Hippolyta losing the "benevolent" part of "benevolent monarch", and Diana losing all the wealth and support structures accumulated during the Perez run so that Wonder Woman can be a regular schmo working a dead end job and living in a crappy apartment.
The setup was contrived (she was exiled in space so long she was declared legally dead and couldn't get a salary) but I really liked Diana taking the job seriously and even feeling sad at being paid to feed people. My favorite thing about it was that she saw people from all walks of life and felt privileged to help them, and there was an interesting thing where she spent so long in another realm doing mystical stuff that she was late for the lunch rush and wanted to quit, feeling unworthy to work there.
Eventually she was declared alive again, helped her coworker with child support, and her salary issue was settled, but she's still friends with everyone she met there as far as I know, and it's a fun bit of trivia that gets referenced now and then.
As for Hippolyta I think what they were trying to do was to have Diana learn that not only were gods and men flawed, her mother was too, but they didn't think through everything about it—just the Artemis situation would be enough, I feel.
EDIT: TIL Loebs' run on Flash had Wally West have to go work for the Internal Revenue Service as an enforcement agent. Scariest IRS agent ever. XD

The Protomen enhanced my life.I'm aware of what he intended. It doesn't mean the idea or the execution was good.
I found a cute house ad for DC comics that was in the style of a TV Guide, complete with actors as characters.
Special note goes to Raul Julia as Sinestro.

I just launched a page for Creature Commandos if anyone wants to take a look.
It's gonna be fun on the bun!I should really get the new collection they released for Commandos.
Pretty cool they are getting their own cartoon soon.
"I am Alpharius. This is a lie."Reposting from Marvel thread
Jim Lew drew a new cover for the upcoming Marvel vs DC omnibus
"I am Alpharius. This is a lie."
Now a cover from Lee for thr Amalgam omnibus
"I am Alpharius. This is a lie."
Man, Amalgam had a lot of really ugly costumes, didn't it?
As tends to happen when merging two disparate characters together
I love how ridiculous these costumes are. It's so wild, the sheer insanity hits so hard.
Though Iron Lantern is a really good design on its own merits. That Green Lantern/Iron Man Fusion really fits.
"I am Alpharius. This is a lie."The Iron Lantern one-shot was also really good. It had so much fun with the pretense that it was referencing decades of Amalgam continuity, and ''Mandarinestro" was such a good-because-it's-terrible portmanteau that its reveal is basically the punchline of the issue.
Doctor Doomsday in Challengers of the Fantastic was probably also made with that same punchline principle.

Character-wise I feel Doctor Doom would have more synergy merged with Black Adam or Sinestro
Well, they really wanted to go with the pun, I guess.
Wake me up at your own risk.Character-wise I feel Doctor Doom would have more synergy merged with Black Adam or Sinestro
In 2024, absolutely. In 1996, I don't know that either would have felt intuitive.
I feel Doom and Silver Age Lex would have been a great combo, but it doesn't work as well post-Crisis.
Ugly costumes aside, Jim lee still is 1 of the best artists of the 1990s alongside Todd McFarlane and he's still got it.

Its a shame he doesn't draw anymore
What does he even do at the company now?
"I am Alpharius. This is a lie."He's the President, Publisher, and Chief Creative Officer.
But yeah, don't ask me what specific duties those titles entail. He holds positions previously held by Dan Didio and Geoff Johns (and going back further, Paul Levitz and Jenette Kahn). Suffice to say, he's in charge.

Not bad. From artist to head honcho of DC Comics.
The art is on... Mike Deodato? though.
