3. It's danceable soft rock.
Neutral Milk Hotel - The King Of Carrot Flowers
(Remember to listen to the full song, this song changes tone multiple times throughout.)
I'm so sorry that my avatar doesn't appear fully in the shot, but the cat was threatening the photographer.3 - I think I've held ants that were heavier than this. Then the really flaccid distortion kicks in and it's maybe as heavy as a hermit crab.
Apocalypse Command - Into Atomic Hell
Only Death Is RealStarts out a 4, lowers to a 1, blasts up to 7, averages out as a 6.
I'm so sorry that my avatar doesn't appear fully in the shot, but the cat was threatening the photographer.7i. A fairly heavy piece of electronic music, but not easily judged on rock music terms.
I'll hide your name inside a word and paint your eyes with false perception.8 - Quite thick trebly tones, but its carried primarily by production and there's nothing really thick, dense, jagged, or otherwise contrasting to really give it much extra weight.
Suffocation - Pierced from Within
Only Death Is Real9 or so in style, but lower in production and execution, averaging out at 8-ish. Quite aggressive and percussive, but too weak in the bass range and too vocally monotonous to have the proper effect. The faster, more manic parts with the furious guitar work are definitely on the higher end, however.
The Angels of Light, "All Souls Rising".

6 - I like the interplay between thudding bass and more jarring, dissonant layered melody. Not really that hard when you boil it down but it has a fairly menacing attitude.
Amorphis - Pilgrimage from Darkness
Only Death Is RealDude, I have no problem comparing musical genres in this way. I can analyse Venetian Snares and MSBR against The Virgin Prunes and Death SS with the best of them. But this is a rock thread. I was seriously tempted to put one of Sutcliffe Jugend's guitar tracks on here, but I decided against it precisely for that reason.
Also, I did number it, but I qualified it: 7i is just 7 on a different axis, after all.
Yeah. Not half bad for a band mostly using acoustic instruments, though. Live versions from the tour following the album were apparently even more intense, if the eight-minute excerpt (yes) included on Gira's I Am Singing To You From My Room is any indication.
Anyhow...
While stylistically a little less brutal than your last selection, I think the atmosphere is a lot more effective, at least partly because the vocalist feels a little more distinctive to me and the production is all around darker and thicker. The drums feel a little faint where they should be more cavernous, and the whispering bit feels a touch contrived rather than properly ominous, but those guitars are great. All in all, about a 9. Pretty good stuff. I like.
Swans, "Half-Life" (live at The Kitchen, NYC, 1984).
A personal favourite of mine. Make sure to turn up the bass.

"Monsters are tragic beings. They are born too tall, too strong, too heavy. They are not evil by choice. That is their tragedy."Read the article on the wiki, the genre has no relation. I honestly think it should be renamed, as it suggests that the article is only referring to guitar based music, whereas in reality it is referring to music in general. Yes, I fully understand that you qualified it on a different axis as a quantity of the imaginary unit, but the main wiki article on The Mohs Scale Of Rock And Metal Hardness should clarify that that was unnecessary.
My point was simply that if one is having difficulty rating a piece of music, referring to the article is a far more effective resort than using imaginary numbers. It provides a pretty clear guide as to what belongs where.
A 2 during the verses, dropping to a 1 during the chorus.
Deerhoof - Sophie / A Town Test Site

I'm so sorry that my avatar doesn't appear fully in the shot, but the cat was threatening the photographer.4 - A lot of clittery clattery noise, but it's like a hot air balloon filled with bouncing ping pong balls at best.
Disembowelment - Your Prophetic Throne of Ivory
Only Death Is RealOn Fast Eddie's suggestion, I've created a new scale of musical harshness which applies to harshness in music in general, while The Mohs Scale Of Rock And Metal Hardness shall now only apply to the more limited concept of 'hardness' in rock music and heavy metal (I'd argue dubstep as well, as the timbre is so similar). The Mohs Scale Of Rock And Metal Hardness has also entered the trope repair shop.
I'm so sorry that my avatar doesn't appear fully in the shot, but the cat was threatening the photographer.Shouldn't the trope name have sort of limited it to rock and metal in the first place?
Definitely a 10. A slow, doomy 10.

7 - Yeah, thank satan they got a different Timo on vocals. You forgot to rate the Disembowelment song btw.

Only Death Is Real11, almost at Anal Cunt levels of hardness there. As for Timo, I rather liked the first three albums from Stratovarius, they're just sort of unique compared to the rest of the catalog.
10. The vocals were tortured, but the guitars slowed down to a sludgy crawl too many times (like with many death metal songs, the vocals were the heaviest part). I'm assuming that was for melodic effect, but they weren't exactly well-written melodies. I suppose you could argue that unmusicality is an aspect of being heavy, but I see it as the other way around.
Testament - For The Glory Of... More Than Meets The Eye
This song is perfect in my eyes. Combined with its album opener just makes it even better than perfect.

8 - Machine gun chug riffs are actually bearable here, enough driving rhythm to just make it to this level.
Axis of Advance - Revolution Decimation

Only Death Is RealThe song was removed by the user so I looked for it elsewhere. The really great melodic sections make me want to say hard 9.
Now...for some of Def Leppard's heaviest: Def Leppard - Stagefright

Oh hey, this thread's back. That song's a 6.
A 6, I'd say. It's pretty speedy, and because I think technical capacity should be rated highly.
I just wrote an article for Jason, and I've been loving this record lately.
I give it an 8 for its speed and aggression, though I tend to associate Level 8 with a slightly more "crunchy" and distorted guitar tone.
I give it an 8.
