This is such an amusing K-Pop song:

This is the first KP song I heard that is sung entirely in English by a native Korean singer. [lol]

Pretty darn catch, that said.

Girls' Generation got a new image. I don't know which of them is which, so if someone wants to take the caption from the previous pic and tweak it for the new one, go for it.

Anyone here a fan of New Jeans? I wanna make a page for them here, but I don't keep up much with them to list tropes that apply to them or their music.

I'd appreciate it if someone (preferably a stan) helps me with this.

This whole time I thought they had a page. I listen to them (I don't "stan" groups though) but I am not good at picking tropes for music. Maybe you can make a sandbox and I can listen to some songs and see what if I can come up with at least three tropes.

I do think I have at least one trope:

  • Animal Motif: The group has a consistent rabbit theme as they their mascot is a cut pink bunny, they are shown wearing bunny ears hats and costumes in some promo material, they have a bunny shaped light stick called Binky Bong and the official for their fandom is bunnies/tokkis (rabbits in Korean)

or maybe that can go in Bunnies for Cuteness.

Thanks, I made two entries for the bunnies examples.

Here's the sandbox. How does it look so far?

I thought about starting a page for NJ, after having listed them in Summary.Musicians until the page was made, but I didn't know how to go about it while avoiding gushing and/or "examples are not recent" violations, given that they debuted less than a year ago and wasted no time becoming a household name in the industry (to the point of even getting their own McDonald's meal!).

Speaking of artists without pages...

Is anyone here particularly familiar with JY Park's music? I want to make a page for JYP, not least because he seems to be a Fountain of Memes in the K-pop community, but I'm not familiar enough his with his own music to list enough objective tropes about it (not pertaining primarily to his career as a record executive).

I'm also strongly considering creating a solo page for TWICE's Nayeon. I might also do one for Jihyo after her solo EP is released (especially given that she already has a few solo soundtrack songs).

Are there any BTS members you think should have solo pages? Now that four of the seven members (RM, Suga, J-Hope, and Jimin) have solo albums, with Suga even having enough for a solo tour, they should probably have enough solo content to produce a good number of tropes, though I need to familiarize myself with their solos a bit more before I could seriously consider starting a page for any of them myself.

The thing about BTS is that there are tropes for their persona/the members themselves individually and their music (including ofc their solos).

So creating separate pages for the members might be a bit tricky. Are we troping only their musical solo career or everything about them? What about things like their debut stuff (American Hustle and Rookie King that have examples for individual members)?

At the same time, the group page would benefit a lot from such splits bc it has gotten too long and slow. Including the description with the members individual discography descriptions. I even made a separate Love Yourself series page for their iconic LY trilogy for that reason.

Been slowly but surely getting myself into BTS over the last few months, including the members' solo projects. I liked Jimin's Synth-Pop-y "Like Crazy" and Jin's atmospheric Coldplay collaboration "The Astronaut", though I think RM has the best solo album of the bunch (I still have yet to check out the rap line's mixtapes, though).

In regard to Jungkook, though, I felt a bit Tainted by the Preview. "Seven" sounded like generic top 40 stuff not too different from Ed Sheeran, Shawn Mendes, latter-day Maroon 5, or Justin Bieber after Justin's voice dropped. A lot of the album is still along those lines, though I do like "Standing Next to You".

Unrelated note: It seems aespa is on track to becoming my favorite fourth-generation group (while f(x) is likely to be my favorite of the second generation).

I decided to enter this world, and the band I listen to the most is Twice.

I am currently in the process of being able to recognize each member.

So far the ones I can recognize are Jeongyeon, Tzuyu (my current avatar), Mina, Dahyun, and Momo.

[up] Apologies for being a bit slow to reply, but this might be of some help to get you familiar with the members (and get you deeper down the rabbit hole).

Good to see another TWICE fan actually turn up on the forums. The other regular/recurring editors on their page has kept me active to a degree, as I've been doing a lot of cleanup and maintenance since almost immediately after I joined the site. Of course, I try to be more contributor than cop regarding Twice, so I made pages for their solo and subunit work, all three Korean full albums, and five music videos (including one Japanese MV).

Tzuyu is my bias in Twice. She has a sweet voice and her fair share of Hidden Depths despite being thought of as just a visual, and is so irresistibly cute that I would adopt her as my little sister if I could (though fortunately she already has the best unnies looking after her).

As I keep shifting between K-pop and metal (usually because K-pop is keeping me magnetically drawn due in part to its greater internet presence), I've been thinking of making a Twice/Slipknot avatar (specifically half Nayeon / half Corey's Subliminal Verses mask) in honor of two polar opposite groups of nine.

Unrelated:

Recently I have started to explore the first generation, which is almost entirely unknown outside of Korea except mostly to more hardcore fans. Most 1G artists, including the most influential ones, don't even have pages. First song I found that really stood out to me was "Dreams Come True" by S.E.S, one of the first girl groups of the modern industry. Aespa did a good cover of it too.

Not sure if this counts as first or second generation (probably second), but Trax is a band I discovered through this wiki. They're so obscure that no one here seems to have known that they broke up in 2019 (or else the page would have said so). Though the page is short, what stood out about it was the fact that they started out crossbreeding idol music with Nu Metal, though they dropped it after their first couple of singles (likely because they debuted at the wrong time and under the wrong label).

Speaking of Twice, the first member I met was Tzuyu, although it wasn't really because of the music, but because of the controversy of China and Taiwan.

My personal tastes in different aspects.

  • Members with more distinguishable faces: Mina, Dahyun, and Jeongyeon.
  • Favorite costumes in Tt: Jeongyeon as Pinoccho, and Tzuyu as Vampire.
  • Members that I find most beautiful: Tzuyu, and Dahyun.

I will continue editing, if I remember other aspects.

[up][up] I was just coming here to talk about 1st gen K-pop, then I saw you brought it up already. To me it feels like the most famous 1st gen artists ever (Seo Taiji, H.O.T., S.E.S., the likes) are like a "mandatory course" for K-pop fans since they influenced K-pop's whole existence, but with mid-tier groups, their overseas fanbases nowadays are very niche. I wouldn't expect a K-pop fan nowadays to tell me a thing about Taesaja, even though in their day they were fairly popular. (Usually these kinds of groups are only known if there's some kind of "lore", like if something wild or tragic happened to them that would never happen currently.) But there's a nice little niche of 1st gen enthusiasts outside of Korea, and I consider myself part of it.

Of course, my profile is mostly modeled after the group Sechs Kies, but I'm actually a little bit more of an H.O.T. fan. (The rivalry between H.O.T. and Sechs Kies was insane, so much that it made for a good Korean drama plot.) S.E.S. are amazing; Bada's a phenomenal vocalist and they had great songs to boot (especially their second album, where Dreams Come True is from). One group I'm really into nowadays is NRG, who had a kind of Eurobeat styling to them (well, before their third album). They were also really pretty 25 years ago, which is a plus for a girl like me. My favorite (eurobeat-ish) song of theirs nowadays is 떠나자 from their second album, Race. But really, almost any song from there (that's not a ballad) could be my favorite.

I'd also like to give a mention to 너! 나, probably my favorite song by them in general. The MV version is different from the CD version, but both are good.

What female K-pop bands do you recommend, beyond Twice and Blackpink?

Hmm, maybe:

  • Aespa: Hyperpop and techo influenced music or at least it was. I think they are doing more GP friendly stuff now.

New Jeans: Their songs are easy listening and aim for a soft nostalgic feel

XG: OK they arent K-Pop technically but they are a global Japanese group that's based in Koreas and most of their fanbase are kpop fans. They do r&b and rap based pop.

Rolling Quartz: They are K-rock but I really like them. They have covered several popular songs along with their own originals. Their version of Pink Venom is really good (better than the original which I didn't care for)

[up][up] For groups, (G)IDLE and Dreamcatcher are good.

I liked Gfriend before they broke up due to their label getting merged.

For solo artists, Younha has been on my mind these days.

Red Velvet, f(x), and Girls' Generation are the obvious ones from the top of my head. I've been listening to the most recent Red Velvet album in heavy rotation lately.

NMIXX wasted little time overtaking aespa as my favorite fourth-generation group by releasing the Fe3O4: Break EP. Their powerful voices can carry pretty much anything, including bubblegum on Expergo. The "mixxpop" concept on the early singles can be a bit off-putting, but the recent comeback brings it back in a way that doesn't feel as disjointed.
