I own:
- Lilith
- Rhyas
- 1 Carnivean
- 4 Shredders
- 1 Teraph
- 1 Scythean
I've played 2 games (pre-Mk II, so a long time ago). None of my models are painted (though I'm getting to it soon!).
EDIT: Oh, and those are the all-metal beasts. None of this new-fangled plastic for me. I joke, I'd prefer plastic, but hey, I'm not looking to buy more models to ignore while I paint my Marines.

Iron Kingdoms vs the Empire from Warhammer Fantasy. Discuss.
I, for one, welcome my new icy dragonblooded ninja girl overlord.
Pretty sure that Menoth IS the Empire from fantasy.
Huh, I didn't realize Priscilla was part of the setting.
The game looks fun, but models are expensive. At least Privateer Press hasn't been inflating their prices like certain other companies have.

Fight. Struggle. Endure. Suffer. LIVE.The models are indeed expensive (and probably on par with GW, quality-wise), but you don't need nearly as many of them as you would for WHFB/WH40K.

Why's that? Are the battles smaller?
Yup. To be fair, I'm not familiar with the tournament-level battles, but usually I see a couple of big beasties and a couple of units and the lock/caster.
Buying all that would buy you maybe 600 to 700 points in 40k.
Anecdotal of course, I haven't the motivation to go look up prices and actually compare. The games in general are smaller though.
Warhammer is about epic scale battles of grimness and darkness.
Warmachine is more about small skirmishes. For example, in 40k, my 500 point tau army (masochist, I know) has 28 models. That's a pretty smallish army too, only 20 fire warriors and 4 drones in that list. In a small game of Warmachines, which is about 15 points, I would expeect to field three, maybe four models as menoth.
Crank it up to 2k points, and you're looking at 74 tau models. Keep in mind, tau isn't exactly a swarm faction, if I was running orks or nids, I would have more like 150-200 models.
In warmachine, at 50 points (which is more or less equivalent) I would look at somewhere around 28 or so models in my pKreoss tier list. Yeah, that's right, the HUGE warmachine army has as many models as the tiny Warhammer army.
Other differences:
- Game speed. Warmachine is MUCH quicker then Warhammer, less moving, less dice to roll, simpler rules.
- Balance. Warmachine is better balanced from a codex stand point. Tau against Grey Knights is basically an auto lose for me. But any faction in warmachine stands a decent chance at wining and can be competative in tournaments (though some more so then others, obviously)
- Price. They cost basically the same. Seriously. The per model cost is higher for Warmachine, but I'm fielding a fraction of the models.
- Distance. Warmachine is fought VERY close quarters. Every army feels like it's freaking Blood Angels. Sure, Cygnar is a shooty army, but you don't see Cygnar players wetting their pants about getting into melee like tau players do.
- Measuring. You can't measure whenever in warmachine. Personally I think that's stupid and pointless, but whatever.
Can't you measure your command radius whenever you want, though?
I'd definitely echo the sentiment on balance.
EDIT: Rules are templated far better than 40k too. Very similar to Magic in feel.

You can measure your command range whenever, but you can't do a range check unless you declare an attack. IMO that's silly, but hey.
Overall, 40k feels more like the granddaddy tabletop game. It's the one everyone knows and loves, but it's old and kind of clunky and the people who run it are to full of themselves. Warmachine is fresh and new, and it's developers don't think they Tzeech yet.
Yeah, measuring your command range is effectively checking range (albeit by some amount of approximation). Once you start giving allowances for doing that in the ruleset, you might as well just start letting people measure range.
Also, I'm holding off on painting my Legion models until I get a good (but simple) flesh technique down right. Or at least, that's what I tell myself while I keep painting more and more Space Marines...
I haven't had a Hordes throwdown in forever though... Can my beloved Carniveans pick things up yet? Or are they still stuck with non-manipulable claws?
I wouldn't know, I only play Menoth, and I haven't seen many Legion players. Everyone where I'm at seems to play either Skorn or Menoth, which makes me wish I had a different army to mix things up a tad.
Found a wiki. Apparently it does have Open Fist now. Hooray!
Mostly because throwing stuff around is awesome.
Two open fists for a two handed throw attack is AMAZING. It's one of the only reasons I would ever run a castigator, for the throw attacks.
BTW, has anyone seen the new Menoth Bastion Seneshal? That thing is AMAZING! Healing for my bastions AND Jackmarshal? YES PLEASE!
Is it accurate to say that, in general, infantry is more popular with Warmachine forces than with Hordes? Or is that a fallacy?
Because I certainly didn't buy the Legion starter pack to play with squishy mens (I have popcorn Shredders instead).
That is entirely dependant on several factors, mostly your warcaster and faction. For example, if you were playing troll bloods or skorn, you would be an infantry heavy faction that focuses on your mens. Since you are playing Legion, you are actually leaning more toward beast heavy lists naturally.
However, you could play an infantry heavy list with legion if you select the right warlock. It's not what your faction is inclined towards, but you can make it work if you try.
From what I understand, generally the factions work like this:
- Menoth: Jack/solo heavy
- Khador: Infantry heavy
- Cygnar: Combined arms, heavy ranged focus
- Retribution: Caster/infantry
- Cryx: Debuffing/horde favor infantry
- Circle: Hit and run tactics, can go beast or infantry heavy depending.
- Legion: Beast heavy
- Skorn: Very infantry heavy
- Trolls: Infantry heavy, favor light warbeasts
Looks like I'm playing the right faction then!
And one day, I will have a paint scheme for them that's simple enough that I can confidently carry it across the pack. I suck at shading flesh tones at the moment, particularly grey or bright pink flesh.
It doesn't have to be grey or pink, you can paint them red or blue or whatever color you want! That's the beauty of miniature games ;)
Oh, trust me, I'm no stranger to not painting to a pre-existing scheme.
They actually look a lot better in the cold grey than anything I've thought of so far though! Which is important.
You read that right.
Both corebooks are free. (I misread it and thought the Forces books were too, but nope. Alas.)

Sorry for a Necro, but I recently got into Warmahordes. One of the people at my FLGS was kind enough to donate a small Cryx force to add to what I bought therenote .
Said FLGS was also offering a sale, 40% off all Warmahordes models until the new year, so I got the Khador Battlegroup with Sorscha, Ruin and a set of Winter Guard for my Khador.
For those interested Privateer Press has launched a Kickstarter campaign for the sequel Warcaster Neo Mechanika
So, it Private is trying to create is own warhammer 40.000? what a surprise.
"My Name is Bolt, Bolt Crank and I dont care if you believe or not"
After doing a search of the boards, I was astonished to find no thread for my favorite new table top game! Surely, there are some other tropers out there who like to thrown down with 'jacks and warbeasts!
I personally play Menoth, and I both really did the lore and mechanics of my favorite Knight Templar faction. Between the Kill It with Fire approach to life, Status Buff approach to 'jacks and some powerful 'casters I can't find anything not to love ;)
Currently I own:
What factions do you guys play? I'm still pretty new at the game, so any tips from veteran Menoth players would be welcome!
