[up] The video I embedded here has clips of the song within it, if you're curious. It switches back and forth between that and Simon And Garfunkel's "Leaves That Are Green". I think I was trying to make a point with it, but in the end just ended up making S&G seem pretentious by comparison.

So it's been about four or five weeks and - honestly - nothing has changed except for songs within the top-5 changing positions between eachother.

Currently, the best song in the top-5 is Rihanna's "Stay", which is absolutely wonderful. I always thought she had a great voice that can showcase a lot of emotion and placing her in a piano ballad really shows it off.

I'll be completely honest..."Stay" bores the hell out of me. I can't even focus on any emotion in her voice when I hear it—all I hear is the droning, simplistic pounding of the Am-Am-Am-C-Am chords on the piano over and over and over.

Hell, I'll be honest, when I first heard this song on the Grammys, I instantly picked up my guitar, figured out the chords, and was strumming along to it in half a minute.

Granted, simplicity isn't really a reason to dislike a song...but I just don't think this simple song works. Not for me, at least.

I don't mind that new Pink song. I can't remember the name of it, but I know it has Nate Ruess of fun. in it.

[up] It's "Just Give Me a Reason". I have her latest album.

However, "Thrift Shop" is #1 again, and the Harlem Shake's #2, so the latter's going down now. Maybe we'll see more change next week.

For the rest of the Top 40, "Mirrors" by Justin Timberlake shot up to #13. Expect that to be on the radio if stations don't find the radio version too long (over 4 minutes 30 seconds). "22" by Taylor Swift enters the Top 40 at #26.

"Can't Hold Us" by Macklemore and Ryan Lewis also rises to "27". It's a sign that they might not be a One-Hit Wonder by the end of their career, even without pop radio on their side.

Oh, and that Fall Out Boy song rose too.

I like Thrift Shop, but I am still holding out hope that Sweet Nothing and Little Talks will get to No. 1.

I still say the chorus of "Sweet Nothing" sounds like "I'm living on sexy oven!", no matter how many times I hear it and no matter how closely I listen to it.

[up] Why do people keep hearing that? Even my mother thought that she was saying "sexy" instead of "sweet".

[up][up] I think "Little Talks" has already served its time on the charts, and while "Sweet Nothing" has been on it long enough, there's a slim chance of it shooting up if the public suddenly becomes really interested (eg, the right Colbert Bump).

I understand that this is just my opinion, but there are very few songs that can make me instantly happy like "Little Talks" can.

[up]I never even realized that "Little Talks" was on the radio. And hasn't that song been out for about a year or so now?

[up][up]The way Florence enunciates...or rather, doesn't enunciate at all.

[up] I'm still hearing "Little Talks" on both alt rock and pop radio, but the former plays it more often. In fact, it hit #1 on the "US Billboard Alternative Songs" chart.

Really, with radio, if someone hears a song depends on what stations they listen to, and how frequently. Unless if it's a super-popular song like "We Are Young" or "Move Like Jagger" and then you're pretty much guaranteed to hear it somewhere.

[up]Said it before, but WIOG in Saginaw has a total aversion to Adele for some reason. "Rolling in the Deep" was the biggest hit of 2011, yet the only time I ever heard them play it was on AT40. In fact, the first time I heard the song was when I saw the video on Great American Country.

And since all the businesses around here pipe in either country, Jewel-level soft folky stuff, or instrumental jazz, I've been mostly oblivious to the pop scene ever since.

[up][up]Well, I meant Top 40 radio.

Honestly, if my roommate wasn't a fan of Of Monsters And Men, I wouldn't have known of the song's existence.

[up]...misread that as "Jewish-level stuff" for some reason........HAPPY EASTER

I suppose Wiki Magic will do its job.

At any rate, I quite like a few of Of Monsters and Men songs (Christ, that's an awkward name).

Charts updated again.

On the Hot 100, Thrift Shop is still #1, but Harlem Shake is now #4. Entering the Top 10 is "Radioactive" and a song called "The Way".

This song?

I've heard it a lot on the radio in the past week. Though, granted, I think it literally just sprung up from the aether this past week.

I don't mind it. It sounds kinda like late '90s/early 2000s R&B, or like a neutered Mariah Carey, and I've always had an "I don't dislike it, even if it's not exactly my priority" relationship with the genre.

Those synth-drums, though, the way they were programmed kinda bug me.

Wait, did Mac Miller seriously suggest watching American Beauty or Bruce Almighty in his verse near the end? Dude, those are very different movies—you realize that, right?

EDIT: Oh my God, I just realized why her name sounds familiar. She's from freaking Victorious! DISNEY AND NICKELODEON, STOP TRYING TO TAKE OVER THE RADIO. YOUR TWEEN GIRL FANBASE IS TOO POWERFUL FOR THE REST OF US TO RESIST.

New week!

"When I Was Your Man" by Bruno Mars finally breaks #1, becoming the third #1 single this year, four months in.

The two new entries in the Top 10 (which seems to be too tight) are "Can't Hold Us" by Macklemore and Ryan Lewis, and another darkhorse called "Cruise" by Florida Georgia Line Featuring Nelly. Anyone know that band? According to the above linked article:

The duo benefits from two Academy Country Music Awards wins on Sunday (April 7), broadcast on CBS, as well as its performance of "Cruise" on the show. A new remix of the song with Nelly was also commercially released last week and accounts for 75% (186,000) of the song's overall sales for the week (while the original version increases by 19% to 62,000).

On the rest of the Top 40, Taylor Swift's "22" seems to have floundered for the moment. Meanwhile, "Alive" by Krewella, an electro-pop trio, slips into #40. It's too early to determine their future success, but I just want to point them out. Typical but interesting song.

Florida Georgia Line already had a huge #1 country hit with "Cruise", and they're currently in the top 10 on the country airplay chart with "Get Your Shine On".

I'm amazed at how they just came out of nowhere. I write for a country website, and right before "Cruise" came out, my editor was saying that they'd be the next big thing. (I'll say one thing — when he's right, he's right. He also predicted that Hunter Hayes would get a giant crossover with "Wanted", which I think is the most boring country song in the past 5 years.)

"Cruise" was already a big hit on the Hot 100 before the Nelly remix was sent out. I think it got to #24 before that, which is impressive for a country song.

And I'll admit, it's a hell of an Ear Worm.

Haven't heard "Cruise" yet. Might need to check it out if I don't hear it 20,000 times on the radio soon.

"When I Was Your Man"...meh. I thought that was one of Bruno's weaker songs on the album. I'm still just hoping he releases "Treasure" as a single and we can finally get the disco revival I've been waiting for.

Article on tomorrow's chart update!

"Just Give Me a Reason" finally becomes 2013's fourth #1 hit!

"Mirrors" jumps to #7, "Heart Attack" to #10. "When I Was Your Man", "Stay", "Can't Hold Us", "Feel This Moment", and "Started From the Bottom" stay in the Top 10, with some rearranging.

"Gentleman" by PSY, due to its beaucoup premiere views on You Tube, roars to #12.

Predictions:

  • "Just Give Me a Reason" won't last at #1.
  • Rihanna's people will get real aggressive, and use marketing techniques to snag the #1 spot. I think they should just fold (since her current album is doing better than Talk That Talk) and release another single, either "Right Now" or "Jump".
  • "Can't Hold Us" will be pushed over into that #1 spot.
  • "Gentleman" will get that #1 spot, ironically surpassing "Gangnam Style" due to streaming views having more bearing.
  • Lady Gaga will drop a new single outta nowhere and snag the #1 spot in front of everyone's noses.

By the way, this video is cool:

The Top 40 radio is really boring right now. No less than three bland piano ballads in the Top 10, and that horrible Ariana Grande song.

I do like that Icona Pop song. And I still hear Sweet Nothing, It's Time and Little Talks from time to time.

Wait, did Mac Miller seriously suggest watching American Beauty or Bruce Almighty in his verse near the end? Dude, those are very different movies—you realize that, right?

Maybe that's kind of the point though? Those lines could possibly be interpreted as "it doesn't matter what kind of movie we watch, as long as we're together", I guess. But yeah, regardless American Beauty is not exactly the most romantic of films to watch with your significant other.
