The harder factions of genres never make it to the pop charts. This is why, say, the Velvet Underground never had any hits.
But songs like the one you posted...I heard those all over the radio (as well as at weddings, confirmations, etc.) all throughout the late '90s/early 2000s. Honestly, it kinda sounds like a Daft Punk song, and Daft Punk is pretty hugely commercially successful, pop charts included.

Insert witty and clever quip here. My page, as the database hates my handle.Yeah, but they haven't made in album since 2005's Human After All (the Tron Legacy OST doesn't count), and the days of good House music getting radio airplay are long over, I believe.
So, like most musical trends, it had its day in the sun and has come and gone and is now relegated to a subculture.
Insert witty and clever quip here. My page, as the database hates my handle.Essentially. Hopefully the same thing will happen to this stupid dancepop crap with every song sounding the same.
Well, it's already subsided a lot. Though there is still some on the charts, there's been a lot more indie influence on the charts (e.g. fun., Gotye, Mumford And Sons, Macklemore and Ryan Lewis, The Lumineers...), which I'm perfectly fine with.
SIDE NOTE: I'm still amazed we don't have a page for Mumford & Sons.

Insert witty and clever quip here. My page, as the database hates my handle.Make one, mang.
I don't know enough about them to do so, nor am I enough of a fan to really particularly care (mostly since I only really know a couple of songs from their first album and "I Will Wait" since, obviously, it was such a huge hit). Just considering that they've been around for a good while and have a pretty solid fanbase, you'd expect some of those people to be contributors to this site.
Insert witty and clever quip here. My page, as the database hates my handle.@Completion post #17: I'm really surprised you don't hear Drake or Wayne on the radio anymore. I live in Los Angeles, and on Power 106 you could not avoid "The Motto" last year.
The song I hear the most on the radio today is Will.i.am and Britney Spears's godawful "Scream And Shout". (That song might just have one of the worst choruses ever.)
I'm still impressed that wobblestep and trap-rave, of all of the niche dance genres out there, managed to inveigle themselves into the American charts. I mean, I get it—brostep is basically '90s pop-trance at half the speed and twice the volume; most of the major pop-rappers of the last five years have drawn from the trap sound—but it's still kind of mind-boggling.
Then again, it's also pretty shocking that Epic Records released NO LOVE DEEP WEB, but, well, stuff happens.

I'll hide your name inside a word and paint your eyes with false perception.Honestly, I never actually heard "The Motto" on the radio. I got sick of it months before it supposedly charted, though, because my roommates last year wouldn't stop playing that song, over and over and over until I wanted to strangle two kittens and a puppy.
And I think that "Scream and Shout" is hilarious, if only for the overly unenthusiastic performance from Britney.
YOU AH NOW—NOW, ROCKIN' WITH, WILL.I.AM AND britney bitch.

So, it's only at #44 for now, but this morning, I heard TSwift's new single that's sure to dominate in a couple of weeks. It's the, bizarrely, less mature sequel to "Fifteen", as I see it.
I made this video here using clips of the song as a sort of warning. Take heed, brethren:
As much I hate to admit it, I love that song.
It might help that I'm turning 22 soon.
I admit that I don't really like Taylor Swift. She just irritates me when they interview her. I saw a 20/20 or Dateline episode about her and she acted like she was so normal, maybe she was trying to be down to earth but it just came off as pretentious, especially since the next segment was about the tour bus fleet that she owns. But she does make catchy songs, I admit.
Yay! A thread for someone like me!
Quick commentary on what I think of some of the hits:
- "Harlem Shake": It earned its #1 spot, but four weeks is too long. I want someone else to take its spot. Soon. Even if it's Taylor Swift.
- "Thrift Shop": This song got me to buy Macklemore's album. It hit #1 because its different and fun. How many songs out there are about thrift shops? Also, great hook.
- "When I Was Your Man": Also unusual, because its extremely subdued. This is as downtempo as it gets on radio. That said, tender love song with a good message.
- "Stay": Can you release "Jump" soon, Rihanna?
- "Suit & Tie": Meh. This is Justin Timberlake's comeback? Little emotion, little dancibility, and little catchiness. Jay-Z's verse is forgettable. But from a meta viewpoint, this is scary. What if Justin's heralding in the next trend? Sorry, but I'll stick with "Sweet Nothing" and the rest of electro-pop.

Jay Z's pointless verse aside, I actually love "Suit and Tie". It's classy as hell, and we could certainly use something to fill that niche on the radio these days. I've been looking forward to his new album since I heard it.
Insert witty and clever quip here. My page, as the database hates my handle. On a unrelated note, I find it extremely amusing that Flo Rida still doesn't have a page. Meaning that, despite him racking three #1 hits, no Troper cares about him enough to trope him.
...Now I dare someone to invalidate this post.
On topic: Does anyone want to read my thoughts on why "Scream & Shout" manages to chart?

Go ahead.
Flo Rida: He is bland. The only redeeming factor is that he has golden ears when it comes to sampling.
Well that's why I started the T-Pain page. Just because he's boring doesn't mean he shouldn't get a page. But in general, TVT has been bad about pages for rappers until fairly recently.
We have a page for Flo Rida's namesake...close enough?
Insert witty and clever quip here. My page, as the database hates my handle.Too bad he has no creativity to go along with it.
Which is why I had to start the Gang Starr page. Jerks.

Help. "22" is stuck in my head.
I predict that it will go Top 40 when the chart updates, although I don't see it going #1.
I warned you! But you wouldn't listen! Why wouldn't you listen?!??

Call me when this guy gets into the top 10.
