King-Ohger's finally ended and next week is BoonBoomger

While not a fan of the overuse of greenscreens in this season, at least Toei tried something different here. They've tried to experiment a bit w/ the Super Sentai formula just like w/ Zenkaiger and Donbrothers though I found Donbrothers to be the most entertaining between the 3.

I have to say I am so glad Kingohger is over, I saw the fights and they are full of garish CGI. Everyone keeps hating on the Boomager designs but it seems like such a fun back to basics series with no awful CGI.

The main problem w/ King-Ohger is that since it's set in an alien planet whose nations have wildly different tech levels, Toei chose to just CGI most of the sets and backgrounds w/c resulted in a lot of unconvincing locales. Contrast downtown Shugoddam w/ the parts of Bognaarok where they use the standard Tokusatsu cave set or when they went to Earth for the crossover w/ Kyoryuger.

Dunno about that have you looked at the individual zords.

Yeah I'm gonna wait until the series actually starts to properly cast judgement.

The CGI is clearly here to stay in one form or another. I doubt we'll ever get fully-CG Rangers like Donbrothers again, that seemed like additional effort for very limited reward. King-Ohger used the virtual production volume far too much, but I could see them using it sometimes. For the mecha, they seem to have settled into a norm of using some suits, and some CGI; we know Boomboomger Robo in base form has a physical suit but we don't know beyond that. Red gets an actual physical car to drive which is definitely an improvement on KuwagataOhger's CGI speeder-thing but we'll have to see how they use that.

The finale was pretty decent. I feel like they cheaped out on the final battle a little bit; way too many "up-close" and "sweeping" shots during the Guren Lagann segment. It was more scene than battle, TBH. Maybe it was budget? Maybe it was deadlines? I dunno.

BUT! The actual ending was a nice send-off for King-Ohger. I unironically hope Tikyu gets used as a setting for something else beyond the inevitable movies. There was way too much effort and thought put into it to be a one-off locale.

Also, people are comparing Space King AU!Gira to The Bruce Master and I can't unsee it.

Kinda surprised to see the reactions here, since King Ohger seems well liked among sentai fans elsewhere.

Nah its just me, I cant take Kingohger seriously, I tried to show some of it to my brother and we both hated how everything looked.

The Ranger suits are definitely good. And as far as the Rangers themselves are concerned, they're pretty average while Rita remains my favorite Ranger this season despite having arguably little backstory to their name compared to the others. The biggest issue of King-Ohger though really is the overuse of CGI.

I personally thought the CG was fine for what it was, at least in terms of environments. Then again, it's possible I just got used to it since I hopped into this right after Donbrothers, which was also CG-happy.

I figure it's how seriously it takes itself that might push folks away, given how reliant on Moving the Goalposts it is. That's a given for dramas to a degree, but I can see folks getting fed up with it if they binge it.

The characters really did carry this season though I think. They played a lot with archetypes (on a good day at least) and the actors all sold it really well.

Sentai CG has rarely ever been great. I do miss when they used to make physical props for the zords. The combination sequences for like, the original megazord, or Victory Robo always were peak coz those were actual figures interacting (instead of CG models combining over a generic background of speedlines).

Maybe it nostalgia googles talking but man I miss those.

Honestly CGI got really notable only in daylight scenes. Like series set more at nighttime don't have it as badly sticking out

But yeah, Toei Tokatsu CG is always sometimes-hit-and-mostly-miss

I don't really like King-Ohger's suits myself but I like the characters well enough and the plot does eough interesting things to keep me invested. I like it well enough.

If anything I'm more surprised by this thread's reactions to the upcoming season. I'm not big on the helmets but otherwise I like the suits and I don't really hate anything else I've seen either. This thread feels surprisingly negative when it comes to the newer season.

Speaking for myself at least, it's 'cause nothing about BoonBoomger stands out. It comes off like a culmination of every tired trope in the book; Breather Episode as a season. I'm sure the argument can be made that that's not inherently bad - they can't all be winners. But that also doesn't turn heads. It's like spending weeks eating proper meals only to suddenly be forced into heating up TV Dinners.

It could end up being a banger, you never know. But there's just...no impression there.

People did seem happy to learn that Rica Matsumoto will be the voice of Bundorio Bunderas at least.

The King-Ohger's suits were fire. Amazing. Comparing them to Boonboomger's suits causes me whiplash. How do you go from such amazing A+ design to such trash.

x3 Yeah, that's a good point. There's just nothing about the series that's exciting to me. I'll give it a chance and hopefully something will stand out, but most series I find something I like before it starts, which hasn't happened with this one.

Episode 1 of Boomboomger has aired. Subs will come eventually. I think there's some meme potential and stuff that will be forgotten by April. So far seems like a return to form after the experimentation that happened during the last three years. Here's hoping it stays good and that things don't get weird.

Finished watching a Raw of ep 1 and gonna wait for an English sub either later or tomorrow. The suits in action aren't that bad actually as the fight scenes still look good. At the very least now that the season is back on Earth, they're back to shooting on-location and none of the overused greenscreen sets that King-Ohger was known for.

Watched Episode 1 out of curiosity. To be honest, this debut felt more like Power Rangers than Super Sentai the way it handled things. Plot was very minimal; kinda just tosses you in. People weren't kidding about this coming off like older Sentai - It's as if they took Carranger, Boukenger and Go-Busters (with a pinch of Donbrothers) and blended them all into a confusing smoothie.

The suits still don't look good (and the jingles are straight-up obnoxious) - if anything, they're even uglier in-motion. Can't say that for the weapons though - I like the customizable steering-wheel concept. Plus, I can appreciate that they're filming in actual locations again. I'm kinda starting to understand the complaints about King-Ohger's CG now.

I appreciated one thing story-wise: The villains acting like they're also sorta-new to this like Pink is was actually a cool touch. That feels like it can lead to stuff.

But yeah...this feels like it's just gonna coast on memes and tropes to carry it through. That has Narm Charm for some folks, but I'll pass on this one.

Hard disagree. The suits in action look awful. The helmets look dumb, the weird cgi tires look bad and dumb. The running shoes look cheap.

Special mention for the spinning face tire during the transformation which looks especially dumb.

Also find the hubcap face even weirder as it looks odd when the ranger's in conversation. Like, with a visor its easy to sort of project a line of sight. But with a headcap it's like... I didnt know there was a visor version of being crosseyed but Sentai found a way.

Yeah, I still don't like the suits after seeing them in action. The wheels on the back/shoulders are particularly bad to me

@Ghilz, I get that's your opinion but why are you so extremely negative when you disagree with other opinions on the sentai helmet and suit designs? Yeah, the helmet looks ridiculous to me too but I can respect others' options that they like the helmet. You should do that too.

I never said their wrong about their opinions or insulted their opinon, I said "I disagree". Whoever likes the helmet, more power to them. I think it's the worst ones short of the ones where they try to include hair in the helmet.
