Do you have trouble remembering the difference between Deathbringer the Adorable and Fluffy the Terrible?

Do you have trouble recognizing when you've written a Zero-Context Example?

Not sure if you really have a Badass Bookworm or just a guy who likes to read?

Well, this is the thread for you. We're here to help you will all the finer points of example writing. If you have any questions, we can answer them. Don't be afraid. We don't bite. We all just want to make the wiki a better place for everyone.

Useful Tips:

  • Make sure that the example makes sense to both people who don't know the work AND don't know the trope.
    • Wrong: The Mentor: Kevin is this to Bob in the first episode.
    • Right: The Mentor: Kevin takes Bob under his wing in the first episode and teaches him the ropes of being a were-chinchilla.
  • Never just put the trope title and leave it at that.
    • Wrong: Badass Adorable
    • Right: Badass Adorable: Xavier, the group's cute little mascot, defeats three raging elephants with both hands tied behind his back using only an uncooked spaghetti noodle.
  • When is normally far less important than How.
    • Wrong: Big Bad: Of the first season.
    • Right: Big Bad: The heroes have to defeat the Mushroom Man lest the entirety of Candy Land's caramel supply be turned into fungus.
  • A character name is not an explanation.

I found this under A Wish for Wings that Work:

  • The Other Marty: Sterling Holloway (a.k.a. Winnie the Pooh) was Berke's choice to be the voice of Opus. This was abruptly changed to Michael Bell without Berke's consent, which is one of the reasons he is not fond of this special. Granted, Holloway had retired from voice acting by the time this special was made, though why no one informed Amblin of Jim Cummings remains a mystery.

The final sentence is odd and sounds like it's complaining about a preferred voice casting when Amblin may not have even HEARD of Jim Cummings.

It's an example, but the Cummings line is natter.

As for the earlier Laughably Evil concern: I think the combination of his apparently hamminess and his whole gimmick being based around cartoony grossout convinces me Crud is valid. Some of the tropes under that folder sound like taking him a bit too seriously (Eldritch Abomination when he just looks like a simple pile of gunk?).

Regarding the Attention Deficit... Ooh, Shiny! example: I guess it would be averting the stereotype? I'm never quite sure if ADOS refers to the depiction of ADHD or just distractability in general.

Does it count as Mentor Occupational Hazard if the mentor only loses an arm and gets kidnapped? After the MC gets stranded in another world a mage trains her in magic but the group is soon captured and separated. Nobody else in the group loses a limb. After the prologue, we don't know what happened to anyone other than the MC until volume 5. Even after they are freed they don't resume their mentor/student relationship and the MC remains separate from the rest of the group.

Bumping this, since I got no answer.

Someone added this to Etra chan saw it!:

As far as I know, the trope seems to cover only actors that play against what they're usually cast for, and don't include any in-universe examples. (For context, Etra chan saw it! characters are actors In-Universe).

You can list Trivia examples as In-Universe if the characters are putting on a Show Within a Show.

Pokémon Unite Unexpected Character:

  • In a time where the soul of the developers seems to have vanished, with only popular Pokemon being added in, and with the beliefe that no Unexpected Character would be added, there was a huge shocker in April 2024 with the introduction of the semi-unpopular Falinks into the roster.

The first sentence says it all.

~Master-Geass: Mentor Occupational Hazard is pretty clear that it's when a character's mentor gets Stuffed into the Fridge, but I think you could maybe write that as a Downplayed Trope.

Bumping my query for a prospective example on VideoGame.Clangen for a second time, with a tweak to the second sentence:

  • No Sympathy: If a cat dies, and a Clanmate has a high enough feeling of "dislike" towards them, the game may describe them as showing a pointed lack of sympathy. Furthermore, the Clanmate will not become afflicted with the "grieving" status, as would be the case if the Clanmate had a good relationship with the deceased. Clanmates with high enough feelings of "jealousy" towards the deceased may exhibit similar behaviour. These scenarios can happen even if the Clanmate in question has a generally benevolent nature. If the deceased was murdered, a Clanmate's apathetic reaction can serve as a clue to the killer's identity if it hasn't been revealed yet, as murder is dependent on the "dislike" stat.
(Cat 1) approaches the clearing where (Cat 2)'s body lies, cold and lifeless. Defying expectations of sympathy and grief, (Cat 1) instead curses their fallen Clanmate to the Dark Forest where they belong.

From YMMV.Fallout 2024

  • Ass Pull: Within the wider context of the franchise, Vault-Tec existing in any form post-War wasn't hinted at before the series. True, Vault-Tec specialized in constructing fallout shelters, but every scrap of information about it depicted it as a corrupt and incompetent Mega-Corp, so their survival wasn't a given, and since their goal is taking over the world and destroying any faction in their way, them not intervening before the 2280s and letting the New California Republic expand as far as it did shows that they weren't considered to be an important post-War player before the TV series. And while surviving Vault-Tec employees were encountered before - most prominently in the form of Stanislaus Braun and Valery Bastow - they were more interested in their private amusements and the success of their Vault's experiment than achieving world domination in the name of the company, and neither of them gave any impression that any company reclamation plan existed.

So, the first part says it is weird Vault-Tec exists but the second part says that you have run into it in the games before. Plus can a single instalment really count as this but only in the context of other works because it is not this in the show itself Thoughts?

From Pathfinder Dragons:

  • Sacred Flames: The empyreal dragon's breath weapon is a blast of holy fire.
Example was removed because the 'holy fire' in question does not deal fire damage in terms of gameplay. Does this mean that the example is actually invalid?

Found this on YMMV.Knuckles:

They Wasted a Perfectly Good Plot: A series focusing on Knuckles would've been the perfect opportunity to introduce his Evil Counterpart and rival Rouge the Bat to the film series, but she is a no-show for the entirety of the series, not even serving as a Sequel Hook in The Stinger.

I really feel like this is more just complaining and whining. Not really valid.

Earlier, I had suggested Loose Canon for The New Adventures of Winnie the Pooh as Pooh's Heffalump Movie has Roo not knowing what a Heffalump is despite appearing in The Great Honey Pot Robbery and Pooh's Heffalump Halloween Movie has the "Boo to You!" special but Roo tells Lumpy that it took place before Kanga and Roo moved to the Hundred Acre Wood.

Just found added to Film.Deadpool And Wolverine:

  • Ambiguous Situation: The trailer establishes that Deadpool and Wolverine comes from two separate worlds: Deadpool from the altered timeline created when he saved Vanessa at the end of Deadpool 2 and Wolverine from an unknown reality. At the moment, it's unclear whether this Wolverine is a separate version distinct from the one seen in the main X-Men films, or if this is retconning the Deadpool films to take place outside the main X-Men timeline, which will be the universe this Wolverine comes from.

[up] I think it does.

Bumping my previous question and asking another.

Professional Sex Ed is mostly associated with sex workers, but can I use the trope to describe a Sex Ed class where the students actually get laid? Like this:

  • Professional Sex Ed: The academy has a dedicated subject for sex and in each lesson the students put different positions and techniques in practice.

Tabs Since: Jan, 2001
#31471: Apr 27th 2024 at 12:34:54 PM

[up] For the previous, it looks like that fits, if the entry isn't deleted outright. Unsure if Professional Sex Ed is flexible enough to allow what seems to be a hands-on class. Unless the hired instructor is a sex worker (the professional).

Here are some questions I have:

Do you guys think that Il Était Une Fois... is the case of Race Lift, given that due to the series Universal-Adaptor Cast the main characters always appear as different race in different episodes (they were Africans, Native Americans, Asians and white's respectively)?

Do you think that upcoming Dreamworks movie The Wild Robot (2024) qualifies as Canine Fiction due to fox Fink having his voice actor being listed after Roz voice actress, implying that he maybe will be movie's deuteragonist?

Does "Goofysona" (drawing yourself as a Dogface) should be on A Goofy Movie Memetic Mutation entry?

Do you guys think that Grandpa Gruff is Draco in Leather Pants? Sure, he isn't villain, but they're some fans (like this one) that portray him as better parental figure to Gallus than he is in actual show.

Do you think that Skipper from The Penguins of Madagascar is a Hypocrite given that he accused the rest of the crew of failling in love with ladies in "Love Hurts" despite the fact that he himself is a womanizer (in Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa he marries the doll, in "The Falcon and the Snow Job" he falls in love with Kitka, in "Otter Woman" he falls for Marlene and "Skipper Makes Perfect" reveals that he had been in relantionship with a female penguin)?

Does Adventures from the Book of Virtues qualifies as Native American and First Nations Media, given that one of the main characters (Annie) is Native American?

Is Who Would Want to Watch Us? qualifies as Take That, Audience!?

Does upcoming The Garfield Movie is the case of Painted CGI, because the animation style is similar to The Peanuts Movie?

[up]Answering some of your questions:

Given what you described, Il Etait Une Fois could have a lot of instances of Race Lift over it’s many shows.

The Wild Robot hasn’t even come out yet, so wait and see if Fink is a deuteragonist.

The concept of Goofysona could be put under Popular with Furries since there's overlap, and I haven’t heard of it before now.

Adventures from the Book of Virtues could be considered Native American media.

Given the examples you brought up, yeah Skipper could be seen as a Hypocrite.

Usually when Who Would Want to Watch Us? is used, it’s more tongue-in-cheek, so no.

And I don’t think The Garfield Movie is Painted CGI, since it isn’t an artistic statement, and looks less 2D-inspired and more like "generic CG cartoon".

[down]Thanks.
