This video, though short, just awes me. (Though you may want to turn down the volume before watching it.

On the surface, it seems like any other six second Youtube video, but when you start to dig deeper, it becomes a profound parable about the nature of man. The first two words are "Oh yeah", indicating Mr. Krabs as being joyous or pleased about something, but at this point, we don't know what. The next word, "I'm" reveals the source of his joy to be something about himself, hinting at a larger, but as-of-yet unseen egotism. Finally, our hint is confirmed with the final words "Mr. Krabs", making the full sentence "Oh yeah, I'm Mr. Krabs". Yes, the source of his happiness is indeed the fact that he is Mr. Krabs, and nothing else. That's Pride. The very next thing to happen after this self-aggrandizing declaration of greatness is that Mr. Krabs falls, in both the literal and metaphorical sense, screaming in agonizing pain. Perhaps his scream is one of existential pain, realizing the vain and shallow life he has lived, or maybe it's an unexplained Deus ex Machina, but one thing is abundantly clear: the pride came before the fall. Indeed, Mr. Krabs' story is a cautionary tale, warning us all about the dangers of pride that we would all do well to heed. Not since The Ugly Barnacle has there been such a profound meaning behind such a seemingly simple tale, and that is why this video awes me.

I'd like to humbly posit a different interpretation. Mr. Krabs is the EPITOME of greed. He has amassed his wealth, day after day, without ever stopping to think about why. His evil has been festering and growing unchecked, while his sense of morality grows rusty from disuse. It is not until an unnamed character says his name that he sees what he has become.

When the child screams "Oh yeah, Mr. Krabs is gleeful, for he is being given praise for his incredible success. However, when the child screams "Mr. Krabs", Mr. Krabs is horrified. By saying his name, the child has forced him to compare himself with his idea of goodness. Mr Krabs screams because he knows he doesn't deserve praise. he screams at the instrument of greed he has become. His scream is high-pitched, almost infantile, which is clever symbolism on the part of the creator. It's Mr. Krab's last shred of decency, last seen during his childhood, screaming at what the future holds.
