If I'm understanding you correctly, then yes, you are wrong. What you're shooting is a left handed bow, but you're drawing with your right hand, which is wrong.
Where the hell did you hear that?
To clarify: the hand you draw with is what determines the handedness of the bow. A right handed bow is drawn with the right hand to an anchor point on the right side of the face, and has the arrow rest on the left; and left handed bow is drawn with the left hand to an anchor point on the left side of the face, and has the arrow rest on the right. Typically, the draw hand is the dominant hand; however, some people who are cross dominant between their hands and eyes (right handed but left eyed, or vice versa) will use a bow opposite of their handedness for ease of aiming.
There are two reasons for the arrow rest being on the opposite side of the bow's handedness: The first, as I mentioned above, is aiming. Your line of sight, and the arrows line of flight, need to be as close to parallel as possible if you want any measure of accuracy.
The second, and much more important, is the archer's paradox:

Three finger draw typically has the arrow on the knuckle side of the bow. Thumb draw typically has the arrow on the thumb side of the bow.

archery only occasionally features though. And when I started I had no idea how to hold a bow.

I'm told the arrow should be on the opposite side of the bow as your fingers on the string. Like, if you draw with your fingers, the arrow should be on the knuckle side of the bow. If you draw with your thumb, the arrow should be on the thumb side of the bow.
