We're going to appoint people in each of the subforums to welcome newbies in by an automated PM and show them how things work in the particular subforum.
The appointment thing is so that at least one person knows it is their job, and so the newbie doesn't get buried under a PM onslaught the first time they post.
We will give the appointee (now called Heralds) a spiffy icon badge so people will know they are on the job for everybody. There will also be access to a report that shows who is new in the subforum.
If you want to apply for the position, all you have to do is post a welcome draft here. That way, a moderator will consider you. If someone else has already applied for the position, don't worry! Multiple people can apply for one subforum.
This is a list of the heralds that have already been appointed and the subforums that still need heralds.

That said, I did look at the greeting and yeah, there's some bits that are a little outdated. It's not super egregious, but it might warrant an update in a few spots.
Currently Working On: Incorruptible Pure PurenessYeah, I was about to say that the greeting could some updating. A lot of new people ask why the forum is always filled and I think it would be helpful mention Sandbox.TRS Queue. Also, wick checks are required for most threads so I feel that the welcome should mentions that as that's also something a lot of new people aren't aware of. I think the "different types of TRS actions list also needs to be modified but I am not sure how yet.
It's too late for me to suggest a rewrite though.

Macron's notesThanks, Macron.
And here's the updated Yack Fest one as well. I tidied up the structure a bit, inspired by the OTC message. I also removed references to a now deleted thread and updated some of the other specific details to match the modern activity in Yack Fest.
Hi, [[troper]], welcome to Yack Fest! I'm Parable and I'll be your friendly neighborhood herald for this subforum.
What goes on here...?
Is what you're probably wondering. A little bit of everything really. Yack Fest is just that, yakking in a relaxed environment. Over here the threads and discussions go over the whole spectrum of sane and inane, serious and silly, and you get the idea. Almost everything here is pretty casual and threads may go off-topic from time to time. Derails just seem to be a a part of Yack Fest.A bit of a tour is in order. You'll see Yack Fest has three stickied threads, with the Meet the Tropers introduction thread probably being the first one you posted in after joining. These will always be up there for easy access. The megathreads are also something you should note. These guys aren't stickied but they tend to stay at the top of the board because they have very general topics: Wiki Observations, Avatars, and Absent People are self-explanatory. Others, like Troper Updates II, Part II have weird names but this and Random Thoughts are basically the general yakking threads of the general yakking board. Having knowledge of what is being discussed is a good idea but not required, you can just jump right in and contribute or post whatever is going on with you currently and see if it takes off from there!
The Rules
As with every board on the forum, knowing THE FORUM RULES will go a long way in explaining what is and isn't allowed. A few more specific guidelines concerning Yack Fest would be:- 1) Stay cool, don't let trolls or jerks rile you up. Instead of being a jerk back, Holler for a mod by sending a message via this button◊ at the top right of the offending post.
- 2) While derailing conversation does happen as a natural part the forum, don't deliberately go about changing the topic of discussion. Don't go in the Baking thread while they are trading recipes and go, "This thread is now about turtles!"
- 3) Snowclones - threads extremely similar to one already existing made for no purpose other then a quick laugh - are a no go, as they have clogged up the board too often in the past.
Wrapping Up
You'll notice there is another general discussion board here, On-Topic Conversations. That's where you want to go if you want the talk to be super serious. Think of that as the Debate Club while Yack Fest is the Ping Pong Club. We can be serious too when our game is on, but most of the time we're here to have fun, eat snacks, and put off doing our homework. So, once again, welcome! If you have any questions concerning anything in Yack Fest feel free to PM me or a member of the staff and we'll help you as soon as we can. I've enjoyed my time here and I know you will too!
I like to think of them as two halves of the same coin.
EDIT: I suppose you can remove the "'Sup" and replace it with "Greetings". Looking back, I kinda cringed.
I replaced "'Sup" with "Greetings", but didn't make any other changes. (But feel free to let us know if there are any other changes you want to make.)
Patiently awaiting the release of Paper Luigi and the Marvelous Compass.Sorry if it was answered at some point.
Can't the automated messages be sent by the same account who wouldn't mind? Or having a new one like Tropers.System do it and for the greetings to have "for any questions or problems you can post in <link here> or contact <Herald handle>"? I'm not objecting to the Herald as a position, but I question if there's a need to assign PM duty to active users, which sounds inconvenient and not having much practical use.
TroperWall / WikiMagic CleanupI think that's something to bring up to the admins but I think that makes sense.
Macron's notesCyto Zytokine said she's leaving the site and would like to pass the title of the New Media forum Herald to someone else. Anybody want to fill that spot? I'll at least add that forum to the header's list of inactive heralds.

Patiently awaiting the release of Paper Luigi and the Marvelous Compass.I might regret this, but given that there's still a vacancy for Comics:
Hi, [[troper]], and welcome to the Comics subforum.
This forum's mostly for conversations about the comic books themselves, not their tropes and pages on TV Tropes.
As some publishers start to experiment with a mix of print and digital comics the border with webcomics can blur a little at times, but the focus here is on the print side of things.
(That said, when webcomics and print comics are set in the same shared universe, we're not going to worry much about the distinction if you talk about both of them on one thread)
It's fine to launch new threads for specific topics, but we do have a few very active, long-running ones as well:
Threads for Marvel Comics:
Threads for DC:
Others:
All of these are good places to discuss new comics, discuss old comics, or ask questions.
(Although if you're only here to ask about plot or character details for trope examples, you might be better with the Fact Checking Thread over in the Wiki and Forums section)
There's also the Comic Book Recommendations thread, which is exactly what it sounds like. It you want to find new comics to read, or spread the word about something good you're reading, this is the place to do it.
The general rules apply to all of the threads here, as they do elsewhere.
In addition, please remember that not everyone will read new comics as soon as they come out. Some people don't get to a comic shop on publication day, some wait for the collected editions and others only discover a cool series years later. So please tag your spoilers in the same way you would if writing for a works page.
Lastly, please remember that not everyone likes the same things - and also that there are real people creating the comics you're reading. It's fine to say that a particular comic isn't working for you, but this isn't a place for excessive negativity - or for vitriol aimed at a comic's creative team.
If you have any other questions, please drop me a message.
How does that look?

Looks good to me.
Macron's notesThat gets a from me.
Excellent work, Mrph.
In all my years as Herald of Live Action TV, I've gotten less than one response a month, and almost all of them have been thanks and acknowledgments I didn't need to do anything about. I think most other Heralds have similar experiences.
Edited by TParadox on Dec 22nd 2022 at 9:02:21 AM
Fresh-eyed movie blogI've been doing this for a couple years and get like one response every couple months at best. And I do the Video Game forum, which is quite busy.
If a tree falls in the forest and nobody remembers it, who else will you have ice cream with?Yeah, people don't respond to me much. If they do they usually just say "thanks"
Currently Working On: Incorruptible Pure Pureness~Mrph1 you are the Comics herald now!
Macron's notesThank you! I see a few messages flying out - I hadn't realised the next post from the forum's regular users would also trigger the 'new user' welcome now it's switched on.
Does anything need to happen to the pinned forum herald needed thread now?
(Also, what's the process for getting the welcome message updated - is it just a case of coming back to this thread?)
-Sub-forums that never had a herald before will the welcome message to everyone who's posts on the thread regardless of who it is (you'll probably receive your own herald message the next time you post on the Comics forum).
- I unpinned the comics herald thread.
-Yes, if you have any changes to add to your herald message, you can post an updated draft here and then me or another mod will swap it in.

Macron's notesWelcome, Mrph. The ice-cream social is on Tuesday; remember to bring your best knife, just in case.
Currently Working On: Incorruptible Pure PurenessHi. Noticed that the Visual Arts herald position is open, and that feels right up my alley. Could I apply for this?
Welcome to Ideal's WorldYes, go ahead.
Macron's notesHere's a draft for the Herald PM. It's a bit short, but it should hopefully do the job:
(This is an automated message, but it is from a real account. If you have any questions after reading this, please reply.)
Welcome, [[troper]], to the Visual Arts forum! As expected from the name, this is the subforum for discussion of topics related to the great and wide subject of art. If you want to share your art, ask for critique, or talk about your favorite artists, this is the place to be! However, please be mindful to keep discussion of visual media that would best fit into another subforum, such as comics or films, to their respective locations.
While this subforum doesn't get the most activity, I hope that you'll be another great contributor to this forum.
Welcome to Ideal's World~Tropers/plakythebirb Alright, you are the Visual Arts herald now!
Macron's notes
Re: TParadox: I thought about pinging but I wasn't sure if you still posted on the Live Active TV subforum.
Re: Discar: The duties haven't changed. I just wanted to gauge the activity of certain (although I clearly missed some people). If you are still helping new people navigate the TRS, then that's all that matters even if you aren't as active on TRS anymore.
