X-Men In General

Go To

This thread's for all of the X-Men comics and spin-offs (X-Force, X-Factor, New Mutants etc.), whether they're decades old or brand new.

  • Apart from the main Marvel Universe titles, Ultimate X-Men, X-Men 2099, X-Men "What If?" stories, crossovers, guest appearances in other books, Alternate Universe tales and things like Marvel's manga adaptations are all on-topic here.
  • X-Men 'family' books are on-topic (as are their own crossovers, guest appearances etc.) - e.g. Wolverine, Deadpool, Ms. Marvel and Cable.
  • Characters and comics that originated in X-Men and its related books but are no longer connected to the franchise are not on-topic, unless you're discussing historical connections and crossovers. If in doubt, check before you write a long post. If this isn't the right place, there's a more general Marvel Comics thread which covers them.

Technically, Marvel's Infinity Comics (and their predecessors, Infinite Comics) are webcomics, not comic books, but it's fine to talk about their X-Men related stories here.

Discussions that are only about X-Men adaptations in other media (films, video games etc.) are off-topic, but discussing the differences between the adaptations and the original comics is fine - as long as spoilers for the adaptations are tagged.

Please follow the spoiler policy rules - tag spoilers for the latest issues, for any previews or content leaks, and for off-topic comics. When including spoiler tags, try to write so that tropers can make an informed decision before viewing them (e.g. which series and issue will they spoil?).

    Original OP
Okay, it seems to me that the thread on "X-Men: Schism" has run its course, and since everyone seems to be commenting on how the conversation is talking about general parts of the franchise, I guess I should start a thread talking about all that.

I have to say that the X Men franchise has been going on for decades. Maybe not as many as the Superman franchise has, but it still has quite a number to it.

One thing I am certain of is that the franchise seems to be subverting Status Quo Is God in recent years. Magneto and Professor Xavier seem to be fading into the background, with Cyclops and Wolverine taking their places. A lot of villains associated to the X-Men have been killed off and have actually stayed dead so far.

All this gives me the general impression that the franchise is trying to reinvent itself. Do you think that's what's going on here?

Mags was just upset. I'm sure he's realized how wrong he was by now.

Ever since ANXM #4 came out, I've been dreading that Bendis was going to kill my all-time favorite X-man, Hank.

Turns out they just wanted to change Hank's look, so he survived. Say goodbye to Cat-Beast and say hello to Gorilla-Beast!

Now I can go back to ignoring ANXM and reading Wolverine and the X-men.

[up] So you're dropping the good book and reading the shitty one? That seems like an odd choice.

I mean All-New X-Men has very good characterization, while Wolverine and the X-Men has some of the shallowest characterization I've ever seen in a comic. I suppose if all you're looking for is a book where everyone shows up for one or two panels for a quick joke line, then Wat XM might be OK. But if you're looking for good writing, and for characters to actually have well-rounded personalities, it seems like you might go with another book. Any other book, frankly.

I fucking hate Wat XM. I wish Jason Aaron would be taken off that book. He's a great writer, but he's just doing an awful, awful job there. He hasn't been writing characters there, he's been writing caricatures.

Bah.

Trust me, I would be the first one to call Wat XM a bad book solely from my knee-jerk hatred towards anything Wolverine. But I gave the book a chance and I ended up really liking it, even looking forward to it. Sure, it's got its flaws and I dislike the Burger King Hellfire Kids Club, but not enough to make me leave it alone.

Heck, my wolverfan friends have accused me of being a skrull or something for liking Wat XM.

My problem isn't Wolverine. My problem is it just sucks. The characters are all one-dimensional, the Hellfire Brats are one of the most obnoxious concepts I've seen in a long time. Even the humour falls flat most of the time. I've liked a couple issues. The Doop issue drawn by Mike Allred - how could I not love that one? And the Angel issue, where he finds Shark-Girl. That was a good issue. Very character-focused and, as an aside, the only time we've actually seen anyone from the JGS go out to try to help new mutants. By and large, the series has been frustratingly shallow, and nowhere near what I expect from a writer of Aaron's talent.

The point that I was trying to get across is that I had every reason to dislike the book and it won me over.

On ANXM's side, Logan organizing a lynch mob of students he supposedly wants to keep away from violence? Everyone giving Lil'Cyke the stink-eye for something he supposedly will do in the future? No, thank you.

I'm glad you enjoy it, but I don't. So I'll just go back to the books I do like.

[up] I agree with all of what you said about ANXM, but I'm hoping there's some karmic justice in store for Logan and Teen!Scott.

Random theory I had: The new Uncanny X-Force volume will reveal that the evil Bishop was a clone made by the White Sky Foundation. I don't have much evidence (given that the book's not out yet), but we know Bishop is involved and White Sky, at least through Cluster, will be, too.

My problem with Wat XM is just the pervasive use of Deus Ex Machina. I don't know if that's changed since the beginning of the book but it was pretty bad in the beginning.

"Oh man, the school is about to be shut down, what do!?"

"Look at me, Obviously villainous man! I am here to fight at a rather convenient time for you!"

"Oh man, those X-men sure are masters of violence! Of course we'll give them access to the youth of America! Wolverine, your fightin' skillz have saved the day!"

"I do it for the kids, man."

Simon Spurrier has, albeit lightly, hinted at a return for Maggott and/or Marrow on his tumblr. He says he likes them, that Legacy will explore some of the aftereffects of the Age of X reality warp (which they were both alive and powered in), and posted a picture of Marrow's Age of X self.

Marrow! Yay!

I liked Marrow. She was a totally '90s character, but I always thought there was something charming about her. Frankly, I was disappointed when she was made pretty. It hurt the character.

So, I definitely hope she makes a comeback.

Maggott, I couldn't care less about. He was an OK character, but not one I really managed to be interested in.

This also makes me think my theory that Legion's random Scottishness in Legacy is the result of the influence of the powerful Moira personality from Age of X might just be true.

[up] Actually, I'm pretty sure the accent was simply Spurrier fucking up. Blaming it on Fake-Moira works as a handwave, I guess. It's still always going to bug me when he has that accent, though.

I've always read his lines as if he had an accent, he grew up very near to Scotland after all.

[up][up] I would be disappointed if they went that way. For all the bitching about Bishop's character derailment, the idea that he would do anything to stop his future from coming into being did make some sense.

[up] His mother's German-turned-Israeli. She was serving as Israel's ambassador to France when David's powers activated. He spent a few years in a coma, then remained heavily autistic when he was sent to Muir Island as a teenager. So, no, he didn't grow up near Scotland. Scotland just happens to be where he was first seen, but he didn't grow up there.

[up] UXF!Bishop also seems to have two organic arms, which also makes me wonder if he's the same one Cable dumped in the future...

'nother preview. Speculated to be X-Men-related. Part of me is hoping it's a teen book, part of me's not sure if Aaron's right for such a book.

A teen book would be great. All these cool young X-men like Anole, Rockslide, Surge, Primal, Genesis, Broo, etc. need to get more screen time. Especially Anole and Rockslide. Those two are a hoot!

I'd like to see some of the ones that never really got a chance. If UXF really does redeem Bishop, killing all those X-kids back in Aught Six will be one of the few big Quesada-enforced X-blunders left. Aaron's also using a character who can revive the dead.

In particular, I'd like to see Wallflower again. Though, given Aaron's track record, he'd probably have her make out with Glob Herman or something.

Also, incoming Azazel, with his own set of Bamfs. He's apparently working for the new "Hellfire Academy," and claims to have taken over both Heaven and Hell.

Azazel. Ugh. The only reason to bring him back would be as part of a retcon of the fucking retarded The Draco storyline.

I would definitely like to see a new teen X-book that features characters who've existed for more than two years, since Aaron seems inclined to completely ignore all of them in Wat XM in favour of newer characters.

Oh God, not something from Chuck Austen's horrible time. Ugh! Just last night I was talking to a friend about the time Northstar became Annie Ghazmariesue's gay best friend in the most terrible character derailment.

What's next? They'll bring back Ink?
