It depends very much on the area. One autistic woman said that in her working class town, she's had her house egged, and people don't seem to like her. She tries to force herself to greet people in a friendly way to be more liked, and that's just one small part of masking.
As an autistic person, my definition of "normal" is:
- Good person = Normal
- Bad person = Not normal
That's it.
I wish the rest of the world saw it that way. Instead, most people think in terms of "acts like the majority" = "normal" and they have a problem with anything outside that.
There’s also the fact that mentioning that you’re autistic on a job interview might result in you not being hired, regardless of what your resume looks like or how you’ve otherwise behaved during the interview. Some autistic people have also been fired from their jobs just because somebody has discovered that they’re autistic, even if they’ve not done anything wrong otherwise. I recall reading an article like that not too long ago.
Ableist workplace discrimination is very much a thing, much like other kinds of ableism.
People shouldn’t have to ”mask”, but in the society we live in, the deck is still heavily stacked against people who aren’t considered ”normal”.

My AO3 profile. Let sleeping cats lie and be cute and calming. That’s sad. I’m gonna be straight with you, I’m still young, and I was always kinda sheltered to the real world, so hearing this kinda bull still goes down makes me feel bad. It’s dumb.
In battle, we are reborn.x4 unfortunately, bad people are very normal
IDK if I'm either aromantic or if it's my autism that's keeping me from having any desire for romance.
If you play with fire, you're gonna get burned.Reminder that April 2nd is Autism Awareness Day!
The day that allistics try to hijack the narrative and speak over us. Yup.
Autism Acceptance Day has much better vibes.
I do some cleanup and then I enjoy shows you probably think are cringe.Yeah, I know. Someone else told me the same thing through PM.
I don’t see the difference. Did that sound rude?
In battle, we are reborn. So the new PM of Ireland has an autistic brother, and co-founded an autism organization with him. The organization has both autistic and allistic board members and team members, and I'm impressed to see that.
Survival? That’s not right, that’s just plain wrong. I’ve never had to act “normal”, and just no autistic person should. It’s stupid and sounds like something from a dystopian work.
In battle, we are reborn.
