Since we were beggining to have a good discussion back in the Mass Effect 3 thread, I decided to make a thread for this.

I followed the story to the very end, and I must say I was impressed. Except for the end.

This has to be the best Xanatos Gambit story I've ever folllowed. Makuta Teridax remains my #1 Villain of All Time. He was the best Magnificent Bastard I've ever seen. Definatly my favorite villain.

What about you guys?

Apparently this is a thing now.

Not knowing the exact details of what Makuta did towards the end, other than Grand Theft Me, this is why Makuta is one of my favorite villains:

"I am that which you have sworn to protect."

EDIT: Actually, I need to put more of that dialogue:

"Destroy me? You cannot destroy me. No more than you can destroy the sea, or the wind. Or...the void."

"You are like the sea? The sea bears life! The sea bore us!"

"I bore you. For I am Nothing. And out of Nothing you came. And it is into Nothing that you will go. I stand with Mata Nui, side by side. I am his brother."

"The people of the world are builders. But look into their hearts...and you will find that they also have the power to destroy. I am that power. I am destruction."

<eyes narrow> "And I WILL destroy you."

"But...you are but a Matoran!"

"You expected something else? Something like...THIS?"

Cue One-Winged Angel mode.

I just wish they hadn't rushed the ending. Would have loved the Bota Magna dinos. Shame the post-toyline story updates are so sporadic, though Greg does have other things to do now I suppose.

I hope Greg comes up with a brand new universe like Bionicle that ISN'T linked to Lego. He's an awesome world builder.

I liked Makuta because he made it feel as if you weren't just fighting a man or even superpowered being. It seemed like you were fighting the force of nature itself. Every victory the Toa made simply played into his massive Xanatos Gambit. When you factor in his god-like powers, he is an awesome villain.

Of course, Bionicle had other awesome villains as well due to having Loads And Loads Of Characters.

The Shadowed One was pretty cool, as was Lariska. None of them topped Makuta Teridax.

Even the Piraka weren't bad. Read Legacy of Evil. You'll love them even more, especially Zaktan.

Bionicle was really good because it had a unique universe. It had the simple villagers, the shining cities, dystopias, freedom fighters, a unique spin on the Atlantis mythos, among other things. Other stories would have to focus on one at a time, but Bionicle managed to blend all of them together into one awesome universe.

Looking back, Bionicle would have made a great MMO. It would be interesting.

I still hate it when they pulled that Highlander 2 twist.

Having (unfortunately?) never seen the Highlander movies, what twist are you referring to?

I mentioned that I had made some custom bionicles over Mass Effect thread, well here they are. Each one is built on the basic Bara Magna body. It took me a while to figure out a way to attach the old style heads to the new style bodies. Also each one of them is a different height. Onua is the shortest, Pohatu, Lewa, and Tahu are in the middle, and Gali and Kopaka are the tallest. The height difference is really only a stud or two but its enough. Also some of them aren't "done" I still can't find leg guards for Onua, or hands for Tahu.

Also sorry if the all come out sideways.

Hmm can't embed them. Going to make an album and link it in a minute or two. Here we go http://s623.photobucket.com/albums/tt317/cyvaris/Bionicle/

You mean when they find out that Mata Nui is a giant robot in which they live, and they're keeping him alive? I thought that was pretty cool. Just when you thought things couldn't get any crazier they throw that into the mix. Genius in my opinion.

I know the Mata Nui Online Game from the first year is, because I have it saved on my computer; don't know about any others. If you want that and can't find it anywhere I could try to upload it.

Yeah those, those games were simply magical in the way you got to explore mata nui. I wonder if they aged well.

Way better than the crappy console games they released.

I keep looking for the next Bionicle but I never seem to find it. The universe is just so unique.

No, I mean when it turns out what the robot was built for which results humoungous amounts of Fridge Logic and the revelation that every character and mythology we ever knew were a result of some glitch in the AI and should be ignored, thus rendering the whole 10 years of mythology completely moot.

And then give everything a scifi explanation so soft it can smother a bison.

... And that's the abridged version of all my problems with that.

Hmm, let's see...

  • First online game (and second, but that was buggy and never really finished...shame)
  • Comics
  • BZPower Forums—which I suggest you take a look at; some of the fan-made stories and games are good enough I've adapted them into my personal canon where they fill in gaps. Also, Greg Farshtey, the guy who writes most of the official stuff, has an account there and answers questions pretty often.
  • The flash episodes they did in years 2 and 3
  • The first two movies
  • Books up to around halfway through Mahri Nui.

After that everything I know is more or less hearsay.

BZPower probably will have all the info you could want if you search around a bit.

The BS 01 wiki is also a great source of info, and its run by people on BZP who basically do little else but pester Greg to make sure they've got stuff right.

Makuta/Teridax is a great villain because he was a constant threat for so long, and while he shifted in what kind of threat he was, he was still dangerous.

Back in 2001, he seemed to be almost Godlike. Of course, over time, we began to see that Makuta only was playing at God; he infected masks, recruited followers, and showed chinks in his armor. Finally, in 2003, he was defeated... Only for the story to backtrack back to how Makuta came to be the unstoppable tyrant. We learn that the Godlike Makuta from the first online game was simply an image he cultivated to suit his own ends. And when we finally got back to the present, Makuta comes back again and again in crafty ways, and he still wrecks face. See the time he was in the Maxilos body and destroyed Karzhani.

The best part came when Mata Nui finally woke up, after a year of no Teridax... Only for Mr. Makuta to pull off one of the longest-in-the-making evil plans ever. And once again, Makuta is a Godlike being, only this time it wasn't smoke and mirrors.

The storyline really was good until Bara Magna, where it just kept having to integrate the planets and stuff all in two years. I followed it since 2000 (I got one of the toys from Denmark), and while I was a bit freaked out by the added complexity the storyline received when Metru Nui appeared, it overall did very well until the end.

Makuta Teridax is my favorite villain ever, mainly because of his huge Xanatos Gambit.

Even when you saw his true form and stuff, he was a force to be reckoned with.

Time Trap is my favorite book in Bionicle. The fights in that are awesome, same with the story.

You have Makuta, Keetongu, The Shadowed One, this time guy, The Shadowed One's servant, and Vakama all in abandoned Metru Nui in a epic battle all while the Mask of Time has a crack in it which is messing with things.

Best in the series.

Never got to into it beyond the metru nui arc, the story arcs and characters designs didn't really appeal to me as much after that.

But all the Mata-nui stuff was great, still have some of the old comics from the Bohrak and Kal arca. And I still have the movies on VHS too.

And all the Toa Nuva and Toa Metru are proudly displayed on my shelf of awesome stuff.

Y'know, is it just me or is Bionicle being replaced with Hero Factory another example of Lego axing an in-house IP with a well-established background and replacing it with a shallower yet Suspiciously Similar Substitute apparently to appeal to a larger audience?
