Had an interesting conversation regarding music in Islam. Some verses in the Qur'an and Hadith suggest it's haram (prohibited). My wife was actually brought up this way to some extent (it's understood that some music is always OK under certain circumstances, she was also taught that music without singing was OK.).

The translation that tends to come up is the very same I'v railed against in the last page or two. My other translations do not bother to call out music specifically. The Hadith seems to be a bit more specific regarding instruments, but this, too, is in debate.

A couple of Yahoo! Answers, of all things, have some interesting points. One posses a counter point and one elaborates on the main point, yet decides on an open path given the conflicting evidence. Another, also talks counter points, but also "deeds" or "intent", something my wife brought up specifically when discussing the topic.

So, I ask the thread, what say you? Have you been brought up that music or many types of music is haram or halal(allowed)? OR has rules regarding music not really come up in your life from you parents or any other potential source of religious influence?

I was against trashy songs, but that had more to do with the fact that my parents raised us in a relatively clean environment, and it really had nothing to do with islam.

Anyone peruse the Wiki Islam site?

I'm really enjoying it so far as it seems pretty balanced. Though, that was the idea behind the wiki. Anyone else read an article from it and have an opinion?

Update: Wikiislam is shit.

Good people, please read wikiislam and research Nalanda, particularly what happened there in 1197 C.E.

The loss of Baghdad was horrible indeed, but so was the loss of Nalanda.

Tragic, but these things have happen during invasions.

I wasn't aware Wikiislam decided having a page devoted to times Muslims having destroyed or converted temples was a worthwhile endeavor.

If this place ever was an objective look at Islam, it sure the hell isn't now.

I've read a bit about this religion. I like it, due to its similarity to Christianity (only one supreme God, namely).

I think if I wasn't a Christian, I would be either a Jewish or a Muslim.

I'm a (socialist) professional writer serializing a WWII alternate history webnovel.

terrkerr, the coven threads are not your personal soap box to bring twisted arguments about religions so yours can look better in comparison.

I politely ask that you stop.

You take only part of the surah.

Surah Al-Tawba verse 1-7

  • Freedom from obligation (is proclaimed) from Allah and His messenger toward those of the idolaters with whom ye made a treaty. (1)

  • Travel freely in the land four months, and know that ye cannot escape Allah and that Allah will confound the disbelievers (in His guidance). (2)

  • And a proclamation from Allah and His messenger to all men on the day of the Greater Pilgrimage that Allah is free from obligation to the idolaters, and (so is) His messenger. So, if ye repent, it will be better for you; but if ye are averse, then know that ye cannot escape Allah. Give tidings (O Muhammad) of a painful doom to those who disbelieve, (3)

  • Excepting those of the idolaters with whom ye (Muslims) have a treaty, and who have since abated nothing of your right nor have supported anyone against you. (As for these), fulfil their treaty to them till their term. Lo! Allah loveth those who keep their duty (unto Him). (4)

  • Then, when the sacred months have passed, slay the idolaters wherever ye find them, and take them (captive), and besiege them, and prepare for them each ambush. But if they repent and establish worship and pay the poor-due, then leave their way free. Lo! Allah is Forgiving, Merciful. (5)

  • And if anyone of the idolaters seeketh thy protection (O Muhammad), then protect him so that he may hear the Word of Allah, and afterward convey him to his place of safety. That is because they are a folk who know not. (6)

  • How can there be a treaty with Allah and with His messenger for the idolaters save those with whom ye made a treaty at the Inviolable Place of Worship? So long as they are true to you, be true to them. Lo! Allah loveth those who keep their duty. (7)

This is about a war with a group of people that violate a treaty, not a general order. The verse use Musyrikun not Kafirun.

I have engaged in horrible conduct on the troper coven thread last night, which deservedly got me threatened with banning.

Please be assured that I am not normally like this. Religion drives me into passions, it is true, but it is horribly rude of me to preach to ye.

I swear as a follower of the five precepts that I sincerely meant every word last night and was not trolling, but hoping to help.

Free of arrogance and free of hopes, motivated solely by thoughts of compassion and pity, with reverent and respectful mind, expound the teachings of Buddhism for the community. ARYA NAGARJUNA (C. 2nd C C.E.), Provisions for Enlightenment verse 27.

I was trying to follow these words her, and for that I am sorry.

I now realize that there are theists who transcend their religions, but I am a Buddhist who has done the opposite with my religion.

None of you want to kill me, or smash me with iron rods, or follow a god blindly, nor do you believe that I am damned to hell. I certainly hold none of these views. You all seek peace and understanding, Like I do.

Any one interested in learning about Marcionitism or Arianism is welcome to PM me.

It is absolutely forbidden to damn anyone to hell, or even to speculate whether that person will receive hell or not. It is wholly the province of God.

Some peeps are still watching. :P

Still reading the Qur'an at a not so fast pace. Doesn't help that I'm basically comparing four translations, but boy do I need 'em!

I get very different ideas of what is being said between the four translations, I can see why it's said that only the Qur'an in Arabic is the "true" Qur'an. I think Surah 6 is my favorite Surah so far, but there's plenty left to go.
