What all those dirty-cream boxes with buttons on the front that don't seem to do anything were for, what people in other countries are like, the concept of the 'nation-state' as opposed to the 'city-state'.

What cartoons were like before they were all computer animated or made with Flash.

Ideally though, I'm going to have my future kids watch all the same cartoons I watched as a kid anyway, since I have a big DVD collection of them. And they'll know what DVD's and VHS tapes are.

I'll have to explain to my kids that the world was once an enchanted place where people could encounter Olympians and Faerie and magi, until Isaac Newton, the last magus in Christendom, concentrated all the world's magic and took it to Heaven with him, forcing us to rely on the science he left behind.

Reality TV.

They need to know why my decision to escape the civilized world and raise them in the middle of the Gobi desert was morally necessary.

Perhaps, but the middle of a godforsaken desert tends to have poor reception.

It's not as easy as turning off the TV, though. It's like bell peppers: you can take them out, but the whole dish still tastes of bell pepper. Even if you don't watch reality TV, you live in a culture full of people who do, and in a culture influenced by it.
