Just finished The Disaster Artist. I lived under the impression it was supposed to illuminate how the crew managed to make The Room. It didn't.

While the book was entertaining, really funny and actually explained a lot about Tommy Wiseau and the making of the movie in general, in the end it just makes the fact that they managed to finish the film at all all the more mind-blowing. It's like a real-life Voodoo Shark.

So, despite all appearances, I have not suddenly gone insane and decided to carry around a cinderblock in my bag wherever I go. Norman Davies' Europe: a History arrived at my library: 1370 softcover pages, including indices, bibligraphies, and maps. He's a great historian and a wonderful writer who is known for his histories of Poland (Heart of Europe for the short edition, God's Playground for the two-volume extravaganza), and I'm looking forward to this history from the Ice Age to the 1990s.

Charlie Stross's cheerful, optimistic predictions for 2017, part one of three.
