I would definitely agree. There's a lot more feeling in what they do than most bands in their musical arena. It's very visceral.
But one could kind of think of it like this: Most of the early "gothic rock" bands were more beholden to the alienated, shamanic vibe of post-punk bands like Joy Division or The Fall or even Wire (pick any Graham Lewis track on 154...); by stark contrast, Concrete Blonde have more in common with that creepy end of blues-rock that starts with Howlin' Wolf and runs though The Doors on forward, but filtered through the lens of post-punk, then gender-flipped.
Hmm...
I'll hide your name inside a word and paint your eyes with false perception.Excellent point. I had not considered that angle of evolution, but after reading that, you make perfect sense.
Yeah, CB have more in common with the angsty end of blues-rock than they ever did with goth. Getting lumped in with the eyeshadow crowd probably had more to do with Napolitano's lyrics and fashion sense than it ever did with musical sensibility...
If I were to write some of the strange things that come under my eyes they would not be believed. ~Cora M. Strayer~Before I heard Bloodletting, I never would have thought of them as goth. I thought they were L.A. punk in the vein of X, and the albums that sound like that, like Free are my favourites by them.
The mayo-lution will not be televised.Bloodletting is one of my favorite albums. I <3 Johnette Napolitano voice
Untitled Power Rangers StoryOne of their greats...I got introduced to them by way of that album, while getting laid for the first time. You know a band is good when it can touch your soul while you're having your first sexual experience.

I have a craze for concrete floors and counters. They help create the feeling of earth. June H. url=https://www.epoxyflooringhuntingtonbeach.com/contact-us/
One of the most unique and underrated bands of the 80s/90s...as well as one of the most unlucky. I wish they were still around, but unfortunately they are not.
What makes them good: most goth-tinged music is reserved and dreary in an antiseptic fashion. Singers drone on about angst but never get to the meat of it.
On the other hand, Concrete Blonde songs are covered in blood and spit. While I love Sisters of Mercy, I feel miles away from whatever the hell it is that Andrew Eldritch is going on about. When Johnette Napolitano starts in, I can almost smell the smoke and taste the cheap tequila that inspired her.
Anyone else agree? Or am I just smoking crack?
