They don't show Doctor Who in my country. sad I'm going to have to scour the interwebs if I want to watch it. Which I do.

Time to put my Google-fu to the test...

It's...

Matt Smith!

He certainly does look 900 years old.

The youngest Doctor ever, apparently, about 3 or 4 years younger than Peter Davison. Kind of annoyed me when I heard that but Steven Moffat said he was looking for an older, middle-aged guy at first so presumably Smith has to be pretty good to reverse that opinion.

Dr Who is trying so desperately to be 'hip' and 'sexy', this pick is just a continuation of that trend. If that's what you like, then you'll be getting what you want, congratulations.

I'll be out back, pretending New Who got cancelled.

Not ruined forever, just different, and different in a way I don't like.

They've turned the Doctor into a freakin' sex symbol for God's sake, and their just doing more to add to that, by all appearances.

You can keep your New Who, and I hope its good, but I just know its not going to be to my taste. I was getting bored with what they were doing with David Tennant, and this guy is as good as Tennant 1.5. It doesn't look like he'll be bringing anything new to the role. Except maybe more 'sex appeal'. Its a boring pick, outside the whole 'youth' factor.

If only they'd gone with Paterson Joseph, that would have been interesting.

I was hoping for Danny DeVito, but no such luck.

I meant this to be a joke but the more I think about it the more awesome it becomes.

Matt Smith is listed as "Matt Smith (XI)" on IMDB. Interesting coincidence...

I really really really dislike the look. He lacks the awkwardness of the other Doctors. Even Tennant, attractive as he was had hints of awkwardness. The outfit is also too trendy. The guy himself looks like he just walked off the set of twilight and the smirk he has in the promo picture makes me want to slug him. This all seems like pandering to the teenage girl fanbase which is almost never a good thing. Oh for the days when Doctor Who was simply a weird British show that weird lonely men watched.

I'll give the guy a viewing, but a lot of things are pointing in a really unhappy direction.

In the meantime, I'll be pretending that Warren Ellis actually -is- the new Doctor Who.

I'm fairly sure that what he's wearing in the promo pics isn't his final outfit. Though if it is, I agree completely that it's far too plain. Just as a matter of personal opinion, I think he looks just about odd enough to pass as a 900 year-old alien, assuming he can act well enough.

It also depends a lot on the writing - hopefully Moffat will be smart enough not to play up that angle too much. There are definitely ways it could work, we just have to hope that the production team uses one of them.

You kidding? I saw this guy interviewed and he's got plenty of awkward. AND spirit fingers apparently.

And this whole “all the new series does is try and make the doctor sexier” thing just sounds like fan-dumb. Sorry I know that's offensive and I really don't want to start an argument here. I understand where your opinion's coming from and I'm trying to respect that. But it's true. Saying that the new series is bad because it's different isn't constructive, or even a valid reason. It comes across as sheer bloody mindedness. I don't watch the series for the "sex appeal" I watch it for the timey-wimey stuff. But that said why is it any less valid for someone to enjoy the series for the sexy stuff? Who get to decide why people should or shouldn't enjoy a series? I mean, with a series like Buffy it was fine if you watched for the comedy, the drama, the romance, the horror/fantasy aspects. But with Doctor who its like "No! You're not a real fan if you watch the series because you liked Rose/10 together. WE are the real fans because we want to see more about the history of the darleks" Why do you get to be the arbiter of all taste?

Once again no offence intended... Sorry… *cough* I know no offence is normally just a way of covering your bum when you say something extremely rude to a person and you don’t want to get called up on it, but I understand what your trying to say. You think that because Smith is young that there is a chance that he got the role to attract the hip 20-somethings, and no denying this could be part of the reason they chose him. All I’m saying is that A) is that necessarily a totally bad thing -wanting to attract more viewers- and B) maybe, just maybe, he got the role because he’s good looking AND because they thought he would make a great doctor.

Also David Tennant is far more classically good looking than Matt Smith, in my opinion. Just look at the size of Smith's forehead for crying out loud. I mean he’s not the elephant man by any means but… The Forehead! But honestly I wish him all the best. I'll miss Tennant like a limb but we all knew this will happen one day, and from what I’ve seen Smith seems like a good guy for the role. I have tremendous faith in the Who-crew and I don’t think our new Captain Moffat would dare risk making a mistake this early in his show-running but casting someone purely on a good-looking-but-yogurt-bland basis.

Wow. This ended up far longer that I thought it was going to be. So I’ll end this rant like this: Please Matt Smith, if you can here me, don’t make me eat my words. Please do the Tardis justice. Please don’t be the Tofu Doctor.

Where have the Ice Warriors got to? They used to be significant opponents of the Doctor in the old series. From my POV, it seems we're seeing too much of the Daleks and the Cybermen.

And does anybody else think that Doctor Who is being portrayed as a superhero, or James Bond-style figure?

Do you know what I would really, really like?

Joss Whedon to write a Doctor Who episode. That would be made of win and good.

If that ever happened the companion would have to be a 90lbs kung fu master.

I meant that Whedon could do that since she's a 90 lb kung fu master. I wasn't actually asking for myself.

Yep, I liked that one a lot. I particularly liked the new alien design (not the bug things, the other ones).
