Anime & Manga
- Akiba Maid War: In Episode 7, Maidalien leader Ugaki calls former Ax-Crazy leader Manami a "stardust memory" before killing her.
- Aldnoah.Zero:
- In Episode 10, the United Earth underground headquarters is clearly a reference to Jaburo, the Earth Federations underground headquarters in Mobile Suit Gundam.
- Count Marylcian's Herschel looks incredibly similar to the Weltall-Id from Xenogears. In terms of actual ability, though, it's closer to the Sazabi.
- Anime-Gataris:
- The anime Arisu has Sebastian make, Arisuborg Alpha, is very clearly a reference to Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam.
- "Not even Mom's hit me!"
- Case Closed: Akai Shuuichi and Okiya Subaru's names are references to Char Aznable from Mobile Suit Gundam, which Gosho Aoyama is a fan of. Masumi Sera and Tooru Amuro also have their names taken from there. These names are hints towards Okiya's actual identity, how Sera is Akai's sister, and that Amuro is The Rival to Akai.
- Daily Lives of High School Boys:
- Episode 11: Yoshitake complains he's not Gundam. His Japanese seiyuu Kenichi Suzumura has played Shin Asuka in multiple works.
- Daily Lives of a Lady: Yukana defending her not going to school: "Not even my father scolded me!"
- Digimon Fusion:
- Monitamon's head and color scheme are modeled after the Zaku II.
- Shoutmon X5. Look at the helmet. Keep in mind previous forms had head vulcans. Shoutmon IS GUNDAM.
- Shoutmon X7 Superior Mode is a mixture with Imperialdramon Paladin Mode's White and gold color with bigger wings like Gundam Wing Zero Custom and his godly fusion status is similar to Susanoomon taken to up to eleven The way he fuses with everything in the digital world besides DarknessBagramon also brings to mind of the Getter Emperor or Super Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann.
- Bagramon seems to have taken some cues from Lordgenome, as both are mostly portrayed as sitting on their thrones and ordering their generals around most of the time, despite being extremely powerful on their own. Bagramon is a Fallen Angel while Lordgenome was a Fallen Hero, and they both have incredibly badass beards. Of course, this would in turn also make Bagramon a bit of a shoutout to Master Asia as well, whom Lordgenome was partially inspired by.
- In Episode 21 - MetalGreymon's armored hand begins to glow in gold, which he then used to smash SkullGreymon's face.
- Many people, after seeing episode 48, have declared that Lilithmon turns into the Devil Gundam.
- Doraemon: Nobita and the Steel Troops have the gang discovering a Gundam-clone (specifically based on Hyaku-Shiki from Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam) in the Arctic, which they nickname "Zanda Claus". Turns out the robot is a superweapon used as the backbone of a race of hostile robots trying to enslave humanity, but thankfully Doraemon managed to convert it so when the robot army attacks, Zanda Claus is on the heroes' side.
- Eureka Seven:
- The three annoying kids are designed after the three annoying kids from the original Mobile Suit Gundam.
- Weird pink explosions are from Mobile Suit Gundam.
- The Nirvash typeZERO is nicknamed the "White Devil."
- Ray and Charles' mechs are painted in Max and Miriya's colors from Super Dimension Fortress Macross and have strong similarities to Gundam's Ramba and Hamon. There are similar interactions and showdowns between the Gekkostate and the Beams and those sets of characters.
- Anemone is a violently insane genetically altered Tyke Bomb in a red and black version of the hero's mech, similar to the situation with Zeta Gundam's aptly named Psyco Gundams.
- Several elements of the plot and characters resemble elements from Gundam X, though this may be coincidence.
- An event occurs at co-ordinates 0080 0083.
- Excel♡Saga: Episode 22: References Space Battleship Yamato, Mobile Suit Gundam, Captain Harlock, and Queen Emeraldas. Also, Excel sings a line from the Martian Successor Nadesico opening in the English dub.
- Fairy Tail: In Episode 90, the heroes are trying to stop what amounts to a Colony Drop by pushing it back. The green light that shrouds the island when the Exceeds show up, as well as a shot of Exceeds getting thrown away (and being caught by their comrades) make the whole thing look like the Axis drop from the end of Char's Counterattack.
- FLCL had an episode with a ridiculous number of references to, among other things, Lupin III, Trigun, The Matrix, Mobile Suit Gundam, South Park, Cowboy Bebop (an especially clever one in that particular case, recreating the Spike vs. Vicious standoff in the cathedral substituting Haruko with a pair of scissors for Vicious and his katana), and several earlier Studio Gainax works.
- Food Wars!:
- For the cooking lesson with the children post-Fall Classic preliminaries, Soma carves several vegetables into figurines, one of them being a very detailed MSZ-006 Zeta Gundam, not to mention one of the boys is playing with a RX-78-2 Gundam figure and wears a Cundam shirt.
- The sound that accompanies the episode numbers in season 3 of the anime is the same as a Newtype Flash.
- Full Metal Panic!:
- In a later episode Shinji goes into SEED mode.
- The Filler episode "Is Narashino Burning?" (episode 14 of the first anime) has a lot of Gundam references. The head of the Nerima Red Dragons is a nod to Char Aznable. He loves the color red, has swept-back blond hair and sunglasses, flirts with younger women, and (at the end of the episode) starts to deliver Char's famous "mistakes of youth" speech. Chidori lampshades all this by asking "Is that supposed to be cosplay?" when she first meets him. When Sousuke shows up in an AS, we're told it's moving three times faster than a normal AS, which was supposedly an attribute of Char's Ace Custom Zaku II. Finally, the Red Dragons's Red Stream Attack is a reference to the Jet Stream Attack used by the Black Tri-Stars in Mobile Suit Gundam, complete with three machines charging an enemy in a straight line and one jumping over its partners (as well as the hero using one of the enemy machines as a springboard, as Amuro did against the Tri-Stars).
- In episode 5 of Invisible Victory, one of the Arm Slaves in the Giant Killing match has the same paint job as a Dom from Mobile Suit Gundam.
- Due to its premise as a series about otaku, Genshiken contains a stunning number of shout outs and/or parodies.
- Ohno's scads of yaoi doujinshi include obvious shout-outs to Gundam SEED.
- In Chapter 13 (adapted as Episode 8), Tanaka, Sasahara, and Ohno build Gundam plastic models.
- The opening for the second season parodies the Gundam series, with Sasahara and Madarame as rival pilots.
- Gintama:
- In episode 50 Shinpachi suggests a logo change, like maybe adding a Z or X. and "What could Teradaya Otose's Earth Obliteration Plan be!?" is said.
- While trying to mimic Otsuu's verbal tic, Yamazaki randomly ends one of his sentences with "Death Note". Also, Kycilia Zabi shows up in Otsuu's dressing room during this scene for some reason.
- In one of his travels during Episode 96, Umibouzu runs into Char Aznable, and becomes a commander of his army.
- The store manager giving a speech under a spotlight while seated on a stool is a spoof of Stalker's episode openings from Mobile Fighter G Gundam.
- Episode 189 has a visitor that's suspiciously similar to Kai Shiden talking to a man that looks like General Revil talking about Katsura's exploits, only for the Kai Shiden lookalike to beat the hell out of Revil lookalike for talking instead about the 30th anniversary of Gundam.
- The entire Renho arc is a shout-out to Space Operas - particularly with Gundams ("Even Bright-san had never hit me!").
- Chapter 356 features the trump card weapon the Renho (Elizabeth's race) plan to use to invade Earth: the "white devil" mecha, which have blue color at the top, very blockish looking, and features beam saber and beam rifle - or as Shinpachi said, "It's not Renho army, that's Renpo Army!
- Episode 236 gives us The Last Shot delivered by not-Amuro-Ray-but-still-has-his-voice Elizabeth.
- Kyoshiro decides to change his shop to Plamo-kyo Shiro, blatantly copying the name of the Gundam series Plamo-Kyoshiro.
- Gintoki eventually gets drunk and runs afoul of some punks who drag him into what seems to be a Gundam-themed gay BDSM club. After his flogging, a defeated Gintoki closes his eyes with a smile while a "The End" caption appears onscreen, parodying the infamous Downer Ending of Tomorrow's Joe.
- The picture of Kintoki on his instruction manual shows him holding the RX-78-2 Gundam's trademark beam rifle and shield.
- An actual Zaku II that's been left at Gengai's for fixing, which Gintoki keeps pestering for even though the pilot (whose cosplaying as Char Aznable) has come to pick it up.
- Good Luck Girl!: The ultimate Tsukumonogami item Botan carries with her is a device called the Mobile Suit of the Item Lord.
- Granblue Fantasy:
- Aside from her name and SR uncap art being an obvious reference to Gundam, the upgraded portrait of Rosamia's SSR version is a Colony Laser, complete with her talismans acting as solar panels.
- Zooey's uncap art is the Zeta Gundam's Hyper Mega Launcher pose, which is also used as a reference for Wing Zero EW's Buster Rifle pose.
- Yet another Gundam reference, Sandalphon's Charge Attack Ain Soph Aur is identical to ZGMF-X20A Strike Freedom's Full Burst◊ - a winged humanoid surrounded by Flying Weapons which fire a barrage of laser beams. The difference is that Sandalphon has angel wings and he uses swords. Sandalphon's voice actor also voiced Shinn Asuka, the pilot of Destiny Gundam (Strike Freedom's counterpart in Mobile Suit Gundam SEED Destiny)
- Albert's FLB artwork has him do a mirrored salute of Heero Yuy, which even his voice actor, Hikaru Midorikawa (who voices both characters) noticed in his Granblue Channel episode.
- The "Handsome Gorilla" event also mentions two book series read by the skypeople – "Pundam" and "PrePure".
- The trio end Chapter 1 of the third Lowain Bros event "A Walk on the Wild Side" by shouting "Just Communication?"
- Great Teacher Onizuka has the Gundam nerd trio, one of whom is even voiced by Tōru Furuya himself and says many lines lifted straight from Amuro Ray - complete with a 'newtype flash' effect - as well as referring to Urumi as "Sayla". Tomoko also collects Gundam models alongside Barbie dolls.
- In Chapter 226 of GTO: The Early Years, Mafuyu is building a Rick Dom plastic model in the background.
- SHUFFLE!: There's a Nyandam transformable action figure in one of the toy stores.
- Guilty Crown:
- Funell is basically a Haro with wheels and another paint-job.
- Gai's physical appearance looks like Rey za Burrel.
- Another Gundam-reference is actually present, as unusual as it might be for Gundam. See how the Apocalypse Virus turns people into crystals and kills them? Then remember how the ELS killed people. Exactly: By turning them into crystals. And in both cases the subject seems to feel tremendous pain from the conversion.
- GunBuster: Gunbuster's design is a combination of a Zaku, Ideon and Getter Dragon.
- Haruhi Suzumiya:
- In the anime episode "Day of Sagittarius" we have a Shout-Out to the Gundam series ("Bring out the * beep* dams!"), including a censored one shooting.
- In Endless Eight part four, Kyon references Mobile Suit Gundam 00: "Now I know how it feels for Virtue to do a purge".
- Hayate the Combat Butler:
- The opening has Eight copying the pose from the opening of Mobile Suit Gundam SEED.
- This is included in the first opening where Hayate is protecting Nagi from the silhouettes of three robots, they are from right to left Tetsujin-28 RX-78-2 Gundam and Optimus Prime!
- In a recent trailer, one can see a character who resembles Iron Mask Ronah.
- I Can't Understand What My Husband Is Saying:
- When Kaoru takes a look at one of Hajime's porn magazines, she claims that all men are obsessed with boobs. Hajime affirms it and screams a familiar Catchphrase frequented by Setsuna F. Seiei as a parallel while "piloting" from a cockpit:Hajime: "I...We...are boobs"!
- Hajime is watching Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha StrikerS as he gushes over Nanoha Takamichi. When Kaoru attempts to put on a Moe appearance, Hajime senses its presence via "Newtype spark" with the appropriate sound effect. His facial appearance, especially his eyes, changes as if Hajime has entered "SEED Mode".
- In episode 2 Hajime can be seen wearing a cardboard Gundam suit and quoting the first two words from the opening theme song of Mobile Suit Gundam.
- In episode 3 the five boxes stacked on top of one another next to the fax machine contain Gundam plastic models, specifically, the top three come from the SD Gundam line (seen via their enlarged, human-like eyes) with the second-from-the-bottom either the GAT-X105+AQM/E-X01 Aile Strike Gundam or the ZGMF-X56S Impulse Gundam and the last one the RX-78-2 Gundam.
- The first three shots of a scene in episode 12 (Hajime's PC screen, him sitting in his chair floating in space and a close of him giving the camera a thumbs up) mimic the opening of Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam.
- When Kaoru takes a look at one of Hajime's porn magazines, she claims that all men are obsessed with boobs. Hajime affirms it and screams a familiar Catchphrase frequented by Setsuna F. Seiei as a parallel while "piloting" from a cockpit:
- Infinite Stratos has various references to the Gundam franchise, evidenced in some of the designs of their Powered Armor. Some of the examples are:
- Cecilia Alcott's Blue Tears is a blue long-range IS complete with fin funnels and hip-mounted guns (or in this case missile launchers). On the same vein, Houki Shinonono's Aka Tsubaki is a red melee oriented IS.Both are clearly based on the ZGMF x20A Strike Freedom and ZGMF x19A Infinite Justice
- Lingyin "Rin" Huang's IS shares the same name as that one from Mobile Suit Gundam Wing.
- Charles or should we say Charlotte Dunois pilots an Ace Custom Rafale Revive II. she was even given the nickname "Char." Too bad her IS is not red though.
- Jewelpet (2009): In episode 8, a background character is drawn similarly to Amuro Ray and when his girlfriend slaps him, he says his immortal line "Not even my father hit me!"
- Jewelpet Sunshine: The scenes in the mock preview of the final episode have references to Macross Frontier and Mobile Suit Gundam.
- Kill la Kill:
- Ira Gamagori reminds of Dozle Zabi.
- Nonon's Symphony Regalia Grave and Senketsu Shippu look very similar to the Dendrobium and Dra-c
- The way Jakuzure fires from her hat using the same regalia is similar to how the Double Zeta Gundam fires its High Mega Cannon.
- Inumuta's Final Goku Uniform has him sporting the same distinctive red, rhomboid, bridgeless sunglasses worn by Harry Ord, mixed with the looks of a Kamen Rider. The suit's powers and the overall emphasis on lithe acrobatics make it a reference to Spider-Man.
- The penultimate episode of Kotetsushin Jeeg sees the villainous Amabo take a Dynamite Kick to the head, causing a cry of, "You kicked me! Not even Queen Himiko has kicked me yet!" This is a homage to the iconic Bright Slap from the original Mobile Suit Gundam.
- The Japanese title of Martian Successor Nadesico, Kidou Senkan Nadeshiko (Mobile Battleship Nadesico), is a play on Space Battleship Yamato, Kidou Senshi Gundam, and the term "Yamato Nadeshiko".
- Lucky Star:
- When Clerk Sugita hits the wall after being hit by Anisawa, he mutters "Asia" — this may be a reference to Master Asia from G-Gundam
- At the end of the Episode 17 preview, Minoru yells "Finger".
- In episode 19, Konata and her father Soujirou have a lengthy conversation about the Gundam franchise as a whole, though every series title and character's name is hastily bleeped out and images of Gundam characters in the background are blurred.
- Konata orders Tsukasa and Misao to form up for the Jet Stream Attack.
- Lyrical Nanoha:
- The producer of the series, Akio Mishima, has come out on record as saying that much of the series was inspired by Nanoha's "Gundam-ish" concept art, particularly the staff and the colours of her uniform (Nanoha tribute fanbook, in Megami Magazine #91).
- In fact, several of the characters are schoolgirl-shaped versions of various mecha. Nanoha herself is such an expy of the original RX-78-2 that she appropriated its nickname "The White Devil", which is now more associated with her than with the mecha in some circles. Nanoha uses fin funnels during the third series due to the standard powerup curve making her resemblance to a Gundam of the later UC timeline even more pronounced.
- The plot arc of the first three series is broadly similar to that of the Gundam series Mobile Suit Gundam and Zeta Gundam, with the blond nemesis doing a Heel–Face Turn and appearing as an ally in the second series, and a long Time Skip between the penultimate series and the third installment, during which the protagonists grow up (Mobile Suit Gundam: Char's Counterattack). The main difference is that Fate, unlike Char, does not undergo a later Face–Heel Turn.
- Reinforce, and her tinier, cuter incarnation, Reinforce Zwei. In Victory Gundam, there's a battleship named Reinforce, which was later remodeled into the Reinforce Junior.
- ViVid character Einhart has the family name of Stratos. Part Vehicular Theme Naming, part Gundam 00 reference.
- Macross Delta:
- As a royalist nation that declares independence from the U.N. and follows it up with an invasion, the Kingdom of the Wind is a rather clear send-up of the Duchy of Zeon.
- Roid's speech in Episode 15 pretty much solidifies him as a Gihren's Expy.
- Epsilon Foundation's support for both the Windemerians and the UN Government makes them an Expy for Anaheim Electronics.
- Contractors supporting numerous factions occur very frequently in the world of Macross, especially given how big its world is. Moreover, Epsilon is implied to be the remnants of the anti-UN organization responsible for designing the SV-51 dating as far back as Macross Zero, and they still want to topple the UN/NUN even now (via Windermere). However, to keep the NUN off their backs, they needed to play both sides. Though they are certainly not going to supply the NUN with their newest SV-262s.
- Monster Musume: In the bonus of Volume 6 featuring Lala, she is reenacting the finale of Mobile Suit Gundam with her body in the headless Gundam "Last Shooting" pose and her head as the Zeong's head. This is doubly appropriate since the original pilots Amuro and Char were in a Love Triangle with a girl named Lalah.
- My Hero Academia: The Sturm und Drang Brothers in Vigilante have an attack formation based on the Jetstream Attack of the Black Tri-Stars in Mobile Suit Gundam, with the three of them lining up in a row and each using a different different "attack" in rapid succession, facilitated by their superior speed and agility. The difference being that the Tri-Stars used actual attacks, while the Sturm und Drang Brothers are just idiotic perverts who in turn flip a woman's skirt, steal her panties, and wear the stolen panties.
- Naruto: According to Kakashi, the Kyuubi's red chakra makes his techniques three times as powerful.
- Nyaruko: Crawling with Love!:
- In Episode 1 of Nyaruani, Nyarko channels Setsuna F. Seiei as she declares "I am...we are...Cthulhu!"
- In the first episode, Nyarko yells the names of Gundam mecha; the first episode of Nyarko-San W repeats this, but specifically uses machines that appear in Mobile Suit Gundam Unicorn.
- Cuuko's Episode 9 story about why she fell for Nyarko involves her being forced to play the bad guy in a pretend Saint Seiya game; one of the other games Nyarko mentions busting up is "Federation vs. Principality", with censored-out Bright Noah and Garma Zabi (and Nyarko in Sayla Mass's uniform).
- Episode 4: "Mothers Attack!"; the chapter of the novel upon which this episode was based was called "Mother's Counterattack"
- Episode 6: "War in the Market"
- The "On the Next" preview for Episode 10 has Nyarko using Mahiro's voice to quote Haman Karn, Kamille Bidan, and Lockon Stratos. Mahiro, in the meantime, says "I was stupid, so stupid!", a line said by Sayaka Miki, who like Mahiro is played by Eri Kitamura.
- The Space CQC Jammer and Space CQC Jammer Canceller refer to Mobile Suit Gundam SEED and the Neutron Jammer and NJ-Canceller. However, SEED never went to far as to have a Neutron Jammer Canceller Breaker Disruptor etc. etc.
- On top of that, the pose Yithka and Isurugi make when firing off their guns is the "Last Shooting" from Mobile Suit Gundam.
- Isurugi uses the AGE Device to summon his master.
- The "How to Defeat a Kind Enemy" ends with a preview of the second season, Haiyore! Nyarko-San W; when Mahiro asks "Why W?", Nyarko responds "That's because five young men will fight for the independence of the colonies...".
- Episode 2 Season 2: Tamao declares to Nyarko "A person's heart being stolen by another person's overwhelming power is without a doubt, love!", playing off of Graham Akre's declaration of "love" to Setsuna F. Seiei and his Gundam Exia.
- The Next Episode preview follows Episode 3 Season 2 starts with Nyarko saying "These three things will happen next time! One!" When she doesn't follow this up, Mahiro asks what happened to them and she responds "The other two are just for decoration. The higher-ups...", referring to the dialog in Mobile Suit Gundam when Char receives the Zeong, asks about its lack of legs, and receives a similar response from the technician.
- One Piece: During Sabaody Archipelago, after Luffy punches Saint Charlos, Saint Shalulia exclaims in shock that "he's never even been hit by his father", referencing the famous Bright Slap scene.
- Oreimo: Bajeena... really, Saori?"It's not even funny as a joke. Call yourself Psyco Gundam or Big Zam from now on."
- Otakuno Video:
- Kubo's clothes are Amuro Ray's civilian clothing in the first few episodes of Mobile Suit Gundam.
- When the characters reunite each other in the lift they talk about a Gundam parody.
- During the school festival Tanaka dresses up as Char Aznable from Mobile Suit Gundam.
- Outbreak Company: In episode 7 there's a Freedom Gungal model instead of a Mobile Angel Bandam model.
- Panty & Stocking with Garterbelt: 08-B "1 Angry Ghost" raises the question of when did Lieutenant Matilda become a monkey◊?
- Patlabor:
- The character Kanuka Clancy is named after writer Tom Clancy, and the title Mobile Police Patlabor is a play on Mobile Suit Gundam.
- Another Gundam Shout Out occurs in episode 32 of the TV series, where some mercenary labor pilots attempt a Jet Stream Attack. It fails spectacularly. It hurts that the one pulling the surprise attack shouted out "Jet Stream Attack" before he hit—his target actually telling him to "Shut up!". Apparently, he's something of an Otaku."But I practiced so hard!"
- Revolutionary Girl Utena: In one episode, Anthy (actually Utena in Anthy's body) gives a hard slap to one of the girls in Nanami's Girl Posse, to which she responds, "You slapped me! Even my own mother never slapped me!" The phrase is a gender-reversal on one uttered by Amuro Ray in Mobile Suit Gundam after being slapped in the face by Bright Noa.
- Sayonara, Zetsubou-Sensei: In Episode 4 Mobile Fighter G Gundam, Ultraman, Star Wars, and Neon Genesis Evangelion get referenced in a big way:
- The mask that makes Chiri grow giant is an Ultraman mask. She dispatches the mecha in a shot for shot parallel to Asuka mutilating the MP Eva's. Abiru even hangs a lampshade on it. "Why is she speaking in German?" The last kill is a Mobile Fighter G Gundam reference (though it's called "Bakunetsu Gold Finger," she grasps the head so it's closer to the Shining Finger). Finally, she blows up the Alien spaceship with Ultraman's cross laser thing, stock footage and all.
- Shirobako: In Miyamori's fantasy during episode 11, she gets a look through other animation studios. Bee Productions features characters from some of Shin-Ei Animation's productions including Doraemon and Shin Nohara, while Sunup is staffed with numerous Mobile Suits and Zakus.
- Space☆Dandy:
- The Jaicro Empire seems to employ Humongous Mecha that look like either the Unicorn or Banshee Gundams
- The time the show is set in in is Universal Century 0014, a calendar type borrowed from the Gundam franchise's main timeline.
- The A.L.E. has a head and barrels reminiscent of a Guncannon.
- When the gang think the future echos they're getting mean they've developed special powers, there's a direct homage to this iconic scene◊ from Mobile Suit Gundam.
- The young Meow apparently built Tem Ray's Circuit.
- Dandy, QT, and Meow end up jumping from one universe to another, jumping through various animation styles, character designs, and laws of physics as they go. One of the universes was Attack On Dandy. In another, they're Mobile Suit pilots, with Dandy specifically being a Char Expy... literally.
- Then there's the one who's a Camille clone, and the Cobra clone, and the Cosmo clone (complete with orange afro). And the one that's head of a science ninja team.
- Scarlett's ex-boyfriend is a Mobile Suit pilot wearing a Universal Century Earth Federation Space Force pilot suit and piloting what looks like a cross between a Gundam and a Crossbone Vanguard mobile suit. His name is Dolph, and looks just like Dolph Lundgren.
- The battle between the Jaicro and Gogol Empires plays out just like The Battle of A Baoa Qu.
- Spriggan: One of the signboard in the First Mission oneshot has a Principality of Zeon sign on it. It's hard to see unless you take a good look at said page.
- Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann:
- Lordgenome himself is blended with Master Asia. Originally humanity's greatest champion, he became its worst enemy upon realizing their impact on the world. While never a mentor to The Hero, he was his predecessor and pilots the dark, scary counterpart to his robot◊, and is just as powerful with or without it in combat. They also hung some lampshades on the source◊ material◊.
- A large part of Parallel Works 8 (which isn't really "parallel" at all and serves as Lordgenome's Start of Darkness) seems to shout out to the concept of SRW, as a lot of the Spiral Army mechs look like GL-ized versions of various famous mecha - a Mazinger Z, several Gundams, a Gaiking, an Arbalest and many others are clearly visible in the big "pan-back" around 1:00 and you can spot other shoutouts when Genome slaughters his teammates. The "aliens attack, various robots team up to fight invaders" plot is even boilerplate SRW. So the implication is that Lordgenome lead a Super Robot War and then became the villain of such... and then won. Hilarious in Hindsight when Super Robot Wars Z2 Saisei-hen came out - in that game's backstory, Lordgenome was part of a group that apparently included some form of Mazinger Z, Getter Robo, SuperDimensionFortressMacross, and Original Generation characters.
- The show's episode titling conventions may or may not be an intended shout out to After War Gundam X, which uses the same naming rules.
- The design of the Grapearl looks like a mix between the Arbalest, the GM and the Strike Dagger. Then again, it isn't surprising that it's similar in design to several Mass-Produced Real Robots, considering its own status in the series.
- Uzaki-chan Wants to Hang Out!: Hana's speech about Chocomint in episode 5 takes a lot of cues from Gihren Zabi's Sieg Zeon speech, especially with the "Turn your sadness into anger" line.
- The World God Only Knows:
- A Zaku head, an interstellar locomotive, and lastly a pumpkin carriage for our Tsunderella. (chapter 4, p.13-14 & chapter 5, p.2-3)
- The
Axis3D is intercepted byLondo Bell2D girls in the third panel. (chapter 33, p.10) - "Beyond The Time" as BGM, please.
- Captain Bright from the original Gundam series, working as a galge developer. (chapter 35, p.14)
- The entirety of the original Gundam series gets played out in Keima's intergalactic war between the single- and multi-heroine armies, right down to Char and Amuro's climatic sword fight. (chapter 75, p.10-14)
- The key-shape of A Baoa Qu is an allusion to Leaf and Key. (chapter 75, p.11)
- Is the word on the background Kei-chan's Kiai? If that's so, then he's quoting Harry Ord... (FLAG 219, pg. 7)
- FLAG.89 "Turn A" - A reference to ∀ Gundam.
- FLAG.135 "Mission Incomplete"
- FLAG.195 "Beyond the FLAG" - derived from the song entitled Beyond the Time by TM Network.
- Yandere Kanojo:
- "Is he a Newtype!?"
- In 47.1, going from Super Mario Bros. to Popeye to Mobile Suit Gundam in quick succession, with a lampshade by Reina that they're pushing the laws of copyright and her yelling they need to stop doing this.
- Yu-Gi-Oh! 5Ds: T.G. Halberd Cannon's Finishing Move has the monster mounting its halberd cannon onto its backpack invokes Gundam X's Satellite Cannon.
- The manga iteration of 5D's has a monster card called "Seven Swords Warrior", easily invoking Gundam Exia's seven swords, as well as the 00 Gundam Seven Sword from the 00V manga, and its gold coloring invokes the Hyaku-Shiki and Akatsuki.
Comic Books
- Albedo: Erma Felna EDF: The backstory of the First Lepine War explained in the Platinum Catalysm RPG, resembles quite a bit like how the One Year War took place, including how the ILR has an advantage at first, in the same way the Principality of Zeon had one at first, with some points taken from Nazi Germany as well.
- Robin: Ives has a Gundam figurine among the many on his dresser, he seems to have purchased it sometime between his freshman and junior years of High School.
- Transformers (2023): In issue #3, After Skywarp damages his arm, Optimus tackles the Seeker again and then rips off his own arm to beat the hell out of Skywarp with it in a scene reminiscent of Shiro using his own Gundam's severed arm to bludgeon Norris' mecha to smithereens.
Fan Works
- Plan 7 of 9 from Outer Space. In a scene parodying Humongous Mecha anime, Buster is piloting "Mobile Suit Dumbgun".
Film
- Captain America: The First Avenger: One of Stark's shield prototypes is clearly Gundam-inspired, combining the front of the RX-78-2's shield with the sides of the NT-1 Alex's shield.
- Pacific Rim contains a whole slew of Gundam references:
- The helmets worn by Cherno Alpha's pilots bring to mind any number of sci-fi designs, but particularly seem to invoke VOTOMS and Gasaraki, or perhaps more pertinently the HRL pilot suits from Gundam 00, the HRL being the superbloc that contains Former Russia.
- Mako being rescued by Stacker in the flashback is reminiscent of Setsuna's first scene in Mobile Suit Gundam 00. "I must become Jaeger!", anyone?
- When Knifehead tore off Gipsy Danger's arm, the pain was felt by the pilot, similar to the Mobile Trace System in Mobile Fighter G Gundam.
- Drifting may-or-may-not-be an acceptable version of New Type bonding, as shown in Mobile Suit Gundam and Zeta Gundam or not.
- Many of the Cadets regroup in front of the Anaheim Electronics Gundam Museum.
- Del Toro himself admitted, in a Japanese TV program, that Coyote Tango and Cherno Alpha are inspired, respectively, by the Guncannon and a Zaku-II from Mobile Suit Gundam, especially the former one. Specifically, it appears to be based on the RX-77-01 version from Mobile Suit Gundam: The Origin, with its 3-clawed hands, larger cannons and blue visor.
- Striker Eureka has "GN 000" printed on its left chestplate. This is the model number of the 0 Gundam, which becomes more appropriate once Stacker is in the driver's seat.
- A statue of the RX-0 Unicorn Gundam from the titular Mobile Suit Gundam Unicorn can be seen in Tokyo in Uprising. For an added shout-out, a piece of debris strikes the right shoulder, the only place where the Mobile Suit had even been damaged in the series.
- RPG Metanoia: There are replica models of the Enterprise and what seems to be the RB-79 Ball in Cel's room.

- The Expanse: One of the asteroids dropped by Marco is shown landing right on top of Dakar. This was the place Char planned to drop the Asteroid Axis in Mobile Suit Gundam: Char's Counterattack. Marco's uniform as leader of the Free Navy is also a blue version of Char's uniform in that movie.
- Eureka: When the Super Photon Generator is turned on to fix the town, the "Mobile Suit Detected" sound from Mobile Suit Gundam can be heard.
- In the Japanese rom-com Himitsu no Hanazono (2007), Ryoko loves Mobile Suit Gundam and often talks about it with chubby otaku Osamu. At one point she even tries to launch a fashion line using Gundam figurines as models.
- Kamen Rider Ex-Aid:
- Ex-Aid in his Robots Action Gamer Level 3 form resembles Fighter Roar from the Compati Hero Series and Super Robot Wars: Original Generation. The helmet even gains a V-fin like a Gundam!
- Snipe's transformation to Level 2 has him doing the Last Shooting as seen here.
- Kamen Rider Gaim: The Suika Arms is a Powered Armor with Naginata and his original form is not much different from Gigantic Cocoon and his face looks a lot like a Zaku.
- While it might have been an Epic Fail, Ultraman Z saw Yoko in the Windom attempt to imitate the Exploding God Finger with the Windom Yoko Impact: Windom enters its Super Mode, displaying a hologram of the STORAGE logo. As all available energy is diverted into the right hand, it glows orange and the joints extend before delivering a Facepalm Of Doom.
Video Games
- Asura's Wrath: In action, the head of the Brahmastra falling to earth is a frame-by-frame recreation of the original Colony Drop.
- Billy vs. SNAKEMAN: When she gets promoted to level 3, Pinky is capable of teaching a jutsu called "This Fist of Mine" (a play on Domon Kasshu's "This hand of mine..." battle cry in Mobile Fighter G Gundam). note
- Binary Domain: The Ace Custom that Philips uses is painted red, ala Char's Zaku II.
- BlazBlue:
- Essentially, Nu is a Mecha Musume version of the Hi-Nu Gundam◊. Her color scheme is essentially the same and even her "funnels" hover in the same place on her back (although they're used a little differently), and her name is a pun on it.
- Since Nu was the Hi-Nu Gundam, and Lambda's an "earlier, incomplete" version of Nu, she shares a color scheme with the original, incomplete Nu Gundam◊ from Mobile Suit Gundam: Char's Counterattack.
- Hazama is essentially Gin Ichimaru, Sosuke Aizen, and Ribbons Almark rolled into one, with a little bit of The Joker thrown in for good measure.
- In keeping with the tradition of her sisters, Mu sports a Gundam-related color scheme... and being the alternate form of our Deuteragonist herself, Mu-Noel gets nothing less than the color scheme of the granddaddy of them all.
- Villain with a high rank in the military? Blonde hair and mask? Fights with the aid of a red robot? Relius Clover has a lot in common with Char Aznable, Gendo Ikari and Father.
- Izayoi has an attack named Slaver Trans-am. It summons Attack Drones, a Gundam staple. In fact, all of her's moves are named after machines or concepts from Gundam, particularly SEED, Destiny, and 00.
- The horn-like "engines" on Izayoi's skirt are also clearly GN drives and they even release GN Particles when she is in Gain Art Mode. Furthermore, the Immortal Breaker’s design seems to be half of the 00 Gundam’s GN Shield attached to a stick.
- The first thing that should come to mind when seeing Kagura's Astral? "This hand of mine glows with an awesome power! Its burning grip tells me to defeat you! Take this! My love, my anger, and all of my sorrow! SHINING FINGER SWORD!!! Go! Go! GO!!" (Blasting Zone is also an acceptable answer, as is, with the possible nod to the aforementioned Siegfried, Soul Conviction.)
- Borderlands 2: The Vehicle Skin Char: No effect on speed, unfortunately.
- Danganronpa: Trigger Happy Havoc: Chapter 3's title is full of references and can be translated in many different ways, but Project Zetsubou preserves the most by translating it as, "Neon Genesis Super Vortex Redux: Rise, Armored Hero!"
- Danganronpa 2: Goodbye Despair: During a trial intermission, Monokuma name-drops the Jet Stream Attack when discussing the newest insult he came up for Monomi.
- Danganronpa V3: Killing Harmony: The logos for the previous seasons, Final Danganronpa 5, Dream Danganronpa 6, Shin Danganronpa 7, The Return of Danganronpa 8, Miracle Danganronpa 9, and Anniversary Danganronpa 10 are styled almost exactly like the logos for Final Fantasy VII (right down to the green meteor behind the text), Your Name, Shin Godzilla, Return of Ultraman, Mobile Suit Gundam, and Doraemon respectively.
- Dungeon Fighter Online:
- Omniblade's second Awakening active essentially works like a set of magical Funnels, including grouping the floating swords on his back in wing formation when they're not attacking.
- Female Launcher's second Awakening active Operation Raids is very remiscient of a downscaled METEOR weapon pack used by Strike Freedom and Infinite Justice.
- Male Mechanic's basic skills are direct references to mobile suits, namely the RX-78 Land Runner, the Ez-8 Time Bomb, and the Ex-S Viper. Additionally, Mech Drop uses an audio clip from StarCraft with its pitch altered, while Sparrow Factory resembles the Protoss Carrier's Interceptors. Finally, his new 2nd Awakening skill that replaces another one is called TX-45 A-Team.
- Fate/Grand Order:
- Archer Altria's NP animations are similar to a Gundam (particularly the maneuvers of Dynames and Cherudim). She even shoots a laser that pierces the atmosphere and shouts "Lock on!!" when attacking.
- Ishtar's NP is a clear reference to the 00 Qan[T]: specifically, the way it teleports using Quantum Burst system.
- Paris's companion sheep (actually Apollo in disguise) seems to be a curious mix of a Haro, Snoo/the Reddit mascot, and EVE. Otherwise, it looks like a near dead-ringer for a Cottonee.
- Santa Nightingale NP is a variant of the Last Shooting from Mobile Suit Gundam (specifically the variant the Nu Gundam uses in its Fin Funnel attack in Super Robot Wars Z).
- If Archer Altria's NP animation is a homage to Gundam, Altria Alter Rider's is a shout out to the Huckebein's Black Hole Cannon. The creators of this game must love Super Robot Wars.
- Odysseus' Noble Phantasm animation, which involves the Trojan Horse being launched out of a hangar before transforming on the battlefield, is a blatant send-up to mecha anime like Gundam. And the Troia Ippos itself is basically a white-colored Getter Beam.
- Shakespeare's Bond CE profile is about him admiring a typewriter and one of the features he praises is being able to write three times faster with it than by hand.
- Swimsuit Nero's normal attacks contain a fair few super robot shout-outs as well; she's got funnels, for starters, and one of her attacks is a lesser version of the same Gunbuster Homing Lasers used in her NP, and the might double as a Macross Missile Massacre reference, too.
- Assassin of Shinjuku/Yan Qing's Noble Phantasm seems near-identical to how Danny Rand uses the powers of the Iron Fist. The last part, on the other hand, is him using the SHINING FINGER!!!!!!
- Hijikata Toshizou's NP's visual of him charging in with glowing red eyes could be a reference to the Thrudgelmir, the Gundam Barbatos, or both. Or perhaps the other Nasuverse crossover in form of a fangame Battle Moon Wars where fellow (OG) Berserker, Heracles, did the same.
- Like a Gundam, Heroine XX's helmet packs either twin vulcans that fire blue plasma bolts, or automatic plasma guns that sound like vulcans. Her third ascension reveals that it is actually her ahoge firing these bolts. Altrium truly is a wonderful material.
- The chibi Nobus from the GUDAGUDA Meiji Resurrection event now have a Mazinger Z and Guntank form!
- In the moment that Jaguar Warrior shows up to commentate on Santa Samba's Present Drop, one of the things she calls it is a Mobile Suit Gundam referencing Colony Drop.
- Summer Okita wants to watch the sunset before she dies, similar to Master Asia of Mobile Fighter G Gundam who watches the sunset before he dies.
- Galaxy Fraulein Yuna is heavily infulenced by creator Mika Akitaka's "Mobile Suit Girl" artworks, and Yuna herself is based on his Gundam F91 girl.
- Genetic Species has the Mechanoid enemy, a blue-and-white mecha who looks exactly like the iconic Gundam mech, albeit one who's human-sized.
- Heroes of the Storm:
- As expected, Mecha Tyrael comes packed with quotes referencing many franchises involving mechas, notably Gundam (in particular G Gundam), Neon Genesis Evangelion, and Pacific Rim.Mecha Tyrael: The original plan to deal with the Kaijo was to block their path with a giant wall equipped with powerful laser turrets. It was a dam with guns on it. A GUN... DAM.
- The Purifier skin for Artanis is clearly based on iconic mechas. note .
- As expected, Mecha Tyrael comes packed with quotes referencing many franchises involving mechas, notably Gundam (in particular G Gundam), Neon Genesis Evangelion, and Pacific Rim.
- Neptunia:
- Noire's transformation quotes are chock full of Shout Outs.
- When Neptune sees White Heart in her HDD form, Nep keeps referring to her as a Newtype.
- Megadimension Neptunia VII:
- One NPC dubs himself Meijin Takanashi III.
- The Bit-type enemy in Machine-type category seems have a name based from the main lead Gundams in Early Universal Century era.
- One of Nepgear's new EXE Drives, "Bit Combination", brings to mind Gundam's liberal use of Attack Drones, especially Kshatriya. She may even quote Kira Yamato when using this EXE Drive.
- Affimojas' very ''The School of the Busty Blonde! The winds of the king! Zenshin! Keiretsu! Tenpa Kyouran! Look! The chest is swelling up!"
- As Bandai's avatar, B-Sha's skillset includes elements from Gundam and Kamen Rider.
- Persona 5: Masayoshi Shido's first Shadow form is a reference to Char Anzable from Mobile Suit Gundam, who was also voiced by Shūichi Ikeda and Keith Silverstein.
- Pokémon: Golurk's design is based on the Super Robot Gigantor. Its Japanese name, Goloog, is a nod to another iconic Humongous Mecha, the MS-14 Gelgoog from the original Mobile Suit Gundam.
- Project Nimbus:
- GCTX-01 Mirai, the game's spotlight BattleFrame is similar to Strike Freedom Gundam both in terms of design and function. Can you say White Devil?
- UCN and CFN, world's major superpowers both possess their own orbital elevator.
- Andrei and his red S37 Terminator which is faster than normal S37. The mission you face him is named Krasnaya Kometa, which, when translated to English, is "Red Comet."
- Whenever Mirai and Yuliana fight each other, their respective battleframes experience a drastic performance boost while glowing bright red or bright green.
- In the final mission of the game, the Children of Fallen Nations have decided to drop a massive Kill Sat named Testament on the planet.
- Recettear: An Item Shop's Tale:
- Divine Finger: He who uses this with love and sorrow cannot lose.
- Ak-kai Claw: "Claws of a legendary demon that could travel on water and land. The red color triples their value.
- Upon trying to rip off Louie...
- Red Alert 3: Paradox:
- The Wave-Force Artillery uses a concept based on actual neutrino behaviour and uses Minofusuki particles to work.
- The Hot-Blooded ability is pretty standard. Then you get to the third level, which is called Hands Burning Red. Perhaps they tell the pilot to Grasp Victory?.
- Scott Pilgrim vs. The World: The Game: The Twin's Humongous Mecha description states that it's a prototype to the Kazinger K. It also features detachable arms, a mono-eye, head-mounted beam weapon and a head that becomes an escape vessel, not unlike Mobile Suit Gundam's Zeong.
- Skullgirls: One of Anime Peacock's quotes is "My love, my anger, and all of my sorrow!", "Get mad! Get mad!", "Ready, GO!", "Burning!", and "Shining!"
- Super Cosplay War Ultra: As the result of the game being (partially) an Affectionate Parody of Super Robot Wars, the title screen will be enough to evidence the first shout out you meet in the game (apart from the obvious SONIKKU BOO!). Not only that, it also has a lot of cosplayers representing franchises that were originally crossed over in Super Robot Wars: Mobile Suit Gundam, Neon Genesis Evangelion, Mazinger Z, Getter Robo... A-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-and it stars its' own version of Sanger Zonvolt.
- Super Robot Wars Alpha:
- The R-1 is an ersatz of the titular unit from Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam: both machines carry a similar weapon load-out, can transform into a flight mode and has an internal system built to take advantage of their respective pilot's Psychic Powers (R-1's "T-Link System" to the Zeta's "biosensor"). Additionally, the R-1 can perform a "Waverider Crash"-like attack.
- The R-2 Powered, with its trademark Shoulder Cannons meant for long-range bombardment, is a parallel of the Guncannon.
- Unlike the other R-Units, the R-3 is an Expy example: in its stock appearance, it looks like the bare-bones GP-03 Dendrobium Stamen, but once it becomes the R-3 Powered, its configuration closely resembles the Dendrobium Orchis. Furthermore, the GP-03 and R-3 share the same mechanical designer Hajime Katoki, making the similarities apt.
- Super Smash Bros.:
- Samus' green palette was referred to on an official site for 64 as a "mass production type Samus", with the colors making her resemble a Zaku.
- One of Ike's palette swaps in Brawl resembles Domon Kasshu.
- Va 11 Hall A:
- A few characters know Dana by the moniker "The Red Comet", apparently from a wrestling career she had in the past. To further drive the point home, when Jill asks her 'why red?', Dana answers "That way I was three times faster!". She's also known as "The Undefeated of the West". Dana loves her Gundam references.
- The first thing the game asks you to save money for is a renewal on Jill's subscription to a porn site called "Shining Fingered".
- Vanquish:
- The hero tearing through a space colony in an experimental white prototype suit while the enemy ace is introduced in a fast-flying red equivalent.
- The microwave emitter being a stand-in for the Colony Laser.
- Preventing meteors from hitting earth.
- And Burns' later gear fashioned after the GP-02A Physalis, a machine turned against its side.
- Xenogears:
- Amuro called. He wants his Magnetic Coating back.
- Domon would also like to have a word regarding Weltall Mk. II and its System Id, as would Ramba Ral regarding Brigandier/Andvari's weapons. And Aerods? More like funnels. They're even housed in the skirt armor when not in use.
- Fei talking to and defeating a drugged up Elly in Vierge is very reminiscent of Domon talking to and defeating a berserk Allenby.
- The Dark Gundam's penultimate form mutates organic wings, as (the location) Deus does. When traveling through its interior, Domon even goes through similar tunnels as the Xenogears party does. And, of course, there's the fact the love interest is assimilated with the Big Bad and is rescued by the protagonist. The last few episodes are where Xenogears's homages really begin to shine through, and this was all done intentionally, and as such it does nothing to make the endgame less awesome. See Sincerest Form of Flattery.
- OR-Weltall's posture is remarkably similar to the Master Gundam. Unsurprising, considering who pilots it. In battle, it also sports a few rather notable aesthetic similarities to Deathscythe Hell Custom.
- At one point we have main hero and his rival use their Gears to push away a massive falling object. Seems slightly familiar, no?
- Kahran Ramsus has an obsessive grudge against the protagonist and challenges him to battle at every opportunity, only to have his clock cleaned every time.
Web Original

Western Animation
- Adventure Time: The "freaky clothes" Lumpy Space Prince dons in "The Prince Who Wanted Everything" are portions of the outfit of Char Aznable of Mobile Suit Gundam. They match well with his many Animesque facial expressions.
- In the Let's Go Luna! episode "Robo Kid", the gang visits a 60-foot tall robot statue, which is a reference to the real-life Mobile Suit Gundam Unicorn statue.
- In the Mao Mao: Heroes of Pure Heart episode "Sick Mao," a sick Mao Mao defeats an ice creature by infecting it with his sickness, while uttering a chant similar to Domon's chant for Shining Finger Sword, complete with similar music to Kohei Tanaka's theme for Shining Finger."My body burns with a terrible fever, and it's your turn to feel the heat! Take this – my germs, my viruses, and all of my pathogens!"
- Megas XLR:
- In the opening credits, Megas dives onto something sporting a Gundam's crest.
- In addition to Star Trek, the series finale is also a giant Shout-Out to Mobile Suit Gundam: Char's Counterattack, with Evil Coop's Mecha #13 bearing a strong resemblance to Sazabi with an army of Zaku lookalikes. For more Gundam goodness, Evil Kiva's mecha has back extensions reminiscent of the V2 Gundam's Wings of Light emitters.
- Sym-Bionic Titan: During the series finale, after the HMER gets wrecked, Steel blasts away at the enemy with an assault rifle in a manner very reminiscent of Dozle Zabi in Mobile Suit GundamHe's lucky enough to not meet quite the same fate, though.
- Some of the junked robots in Kup and Hot Rod's cell in The Transformers: The Movie are bits and pieces of several suits from Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam.
