Recap / 9-1-1: Lone Star S3E5 "Child Care"

Go To

A case of arson turns into a kidnapping case. Owen goes on a date with a important political figure. A boy comes to the firehouse looking for Judd and unpacks surprising secrets.

Tropes:

  • Birds of a Feather: Owen and Catherine start off their first meeting a little bumpily, but bonding over favorite actors like Leonardo DiCaprio and Matthew McConaughey, along with helping the police take in Danica and rescue Katie, makes Catherine willing to take a chance with dating Owen.
  • Cathartic Chores: While reeling from the news about Wyatt and Judd’s blood relation, Grace takes to mopping the kitchen floor pretty forcefully.
  • The Corruptor: Katie’s nanny cam is hacked by her former nanny, Danica, who speaks to Katie over a voice modulator when she is alone in her bedroom. Later, at the start of the episode, Danica tricks Katie into setting her house on fire, lures her to her car, and plans to keep Katie as her own daughter.
  • I Want My Mommy!: A visibly scared and distrustful Katie whimpers this to Danica numerous times.
  • Jump Scare: Watching the surveillance footage is already creeping out Carlos, and he silently jumps when someone puts a hand on his shoulder. Thankfully, it’s just TK asking him to come back to bed.
  • Luke, You Are My Father: The reason Wyatt reaches out to Judd.
  • Really Gets Around: Owen, much to Mateo’s displeasure. Apparently, it happens often enough that Mateo claims that people at the firehouse who have heard about Owen sleeping around have taken to calling him “One-Night Strand.”
  • Sleep Cute: While Carlos watches and takes notes from the nanny cam’s surveillance footage on his laptop, TK wanders out and decides to join him on the couch. He ends up falling back asleep lying on Carlos’ left arm into the next day, when Carlos figures out who took Katie.
  • Would Hurt a Child: Danica may want to take in Katie as her own, but she’s not above slapping or screaming at her if she feels Katie isn’t complying; part of it comes down to the fear of being caught.
  • You Need to Get Laid: Mateo notes that while Owen has the “getting laid” part down to deal with the emotional pain of the ice storm arc, it’s the type of women he gets laid with that he has to work on.
