The meme. [[labelnote:Explanation]]The explanation behind the meme, if necessary.[[/labelnote]] Explanation Like this.
Further mutations and successor memes, if any.
The Funny Frog ShowExplanation A nickname used to refer to the show by its fans. Sometimes used affectionately, sometimes ironically while pointing out all the deeply unsettling and tragic elements of the show.
"I don't feel safe!"Explanation A line said by Hop Pop at the end of "Anne Theft Auto", which has become popular in the fandom and is usually used before Wham Episodes like "After the Rain", "True Colors", and "Olivia & Yunan" are about to drop. Later repurposed by fans of Amphibia's sister show, The Owl House, in preparation for "King's Tide".
Anne's Laughing Mad scene prior to the line above is often used as a meme template due to just how surreal it was.
The Amphibia Reddit page used to have a shockingly high amount of Halo memes, all because of just one user.
"DISNEY CHANNELBETRAYED US!"Explanation Before the season 2 finale "True Colors" was supposed to air, it was speculated that it would feature multiple betrayals. When the episode ended up being delayed and subsequently leaked, fans began joking that the biggest betrayal came from Disney Channel themselves.
"Play the forbidden note!"Explanation A scene from "Return to Wartwood". In May 2021, it became a common source of memes where the "forbidden note" would be replaced with some other song.
"WE'VE BEEN ROBBED!"Explanation A line said by Sprig to Hop Pop regarding the latter's prize-winning corn in "Stakeout", used to lament missed opportunities, especially with some characters.
"I'mma push it. Bop." Explanation During a scene with King Andrias and Marcy, Marcy finds a hidden switch behind a tapestry she spills her bugachino onto. Her response while pushing the switch is this. What followed after this scene were many cut clips of something blowing up or something disastrous happening upon her pushing it, ranging from a WTF explosion to Toad Tower getting blown up again.
"It's no big deal..."Explanation After "Battle of the Bands" aired, it became a common joke in the fandom to pair the song "No Big Deal" with some scenes or images that are, in fact, a big deal.
"Now look what you've made me do."Explanation Andrias said this to Marcy right after stabbing her from behind. It became a meme immediately.
It’s Pickle Marcy! Explanation When the intro for season 3 revealed that Marcy is alive and in some sort of regeneration tank, fans began joking about her being in a "pickle jar", leading to fan artists drawing her as a pickle a la "Pickle Rick".
In a dark way, there are memes where Marcy gets stabbed and left inside a water tank, as there are several memes where she is joked to be in an aquarium or have her with shocked expression to express being distraught about something.
"Hope nothing bad ever happens to me!" Explanation An infamous line from Marcy's theme song takeover, followed by King Adrias winking at the camera. Due to the takeover being a prequel to the events of the latter half of season 2, the fans took this as the writers taunting the fans about what happened to Marcy. This quickly became a common inside joke for the fandom.
"Woke up in Newtopia where I fell down a flight of stairs..." Explanation The opening of Marcy's theme song takeover where she falls down a flight of stairs has also become a popular source of memes.
Marcy, NO! Explanation A flashback of Anne witnessing a news report involving Marcy walking into snakes who escaped a zoo. This clip has been used to express the fandom's view on the harsh things Marcy goes through paired with editing the screen to show clips of her getting stabbed and possessed.
Is it Marsanne or Markanne?Explanation A sudden debate, concerning the correct pronunciation of Marcanne, that occurred during November 2021.
Marky Wu Explanation A point by the Marsanne supporters was that, if you said Markanne, you'd also say Marky. This led to the creation of a derpy-looking Marcy who quickly reached insane memetic status within the fanbase. Even Matt Braly didn't know what was going on! When "Olivia & Yunan" aired, Marcy's comical Cryo Sickness state was regarded as "canon Marky".
King Andri-assExplanation A nickname fans use consistently to refer to King Andrias as a result of his more heinous acts throughout the series.
"It's them"Explanation A common fandom reaction to any three objects that are vaguely red, blue, and green. Literally anything will remind people of the Calamity Trio.
Anytime Anne reacts to seeing something on a screen (such as in "The First Temple", "Spider-Sprig", or "Hollywood Hop Pop") will inevitably be edited to depict her reacting to something else, typically involving Marcy (her falling down the stairs, getting stabbed, or getting possessed by the Core).
In “Commander Anne”, Sasha is revealed to be attracted to women.Explanation A copypasta that originated from Twitter users trying to "manifest" this reveal for the then-upcoming episode. She does blush, but it's because Anne forgives her and declares her leader of the resistance. The quote is often used, with the episode and/or Sasha switched out, in response to any gay Ship Tease or Ho Yay moments. Funny enough, it ends up being "The Hardest Thing" that really reveals Sasha to be attracted to women, as she's shown with a bisexual flag sticker on her rearview mirror in the Distant Finale.
Newt moms/toad dad.Explanation Fans' rampant shipping of General Yunan and Lady Olivia extended into seeing them as Parental Substitutes for Marcy, especially since the season 3 teaser which showed them attempting to rescue her. Similarly, Grime is frequently taken as one for Sasha as they bond over the series. The two's parents being demonized alongside this doesn’t help matters.
Andrias's Exes/The Divorce Trio.Explanation As a comparison to the Calamity Trio of Anne, Sasha, and Marcy; Andrias, Leif, and Barrel are referred by some fans as having had a polyamorous relationship in the past and that Leif's betrayal and Barrel's inaction led to a messy breakup. As a result, many fans refer to them as this, with many jokes about Andrias being kicked out of their "polycule."
The Polyamory Cartoon.Explanation Due to the popularity of Sashannarcy and the comparisons it has with Andrias and his former friends, this has lead to the series being referred to as having polyamorous relationships by many fans, with ships such as Sprig/Ivy/Maddie and Hop Pop/Sylvia/Grime being added in.
Anne at age 37. Explanation One user on TikTok posted their theory about what would happen in the finale. Said theory, rather suddenly, ends with Anne dying at age 37 of a drug overdose. Many people decided to crack jokes about Anne at age 37 doing drugs and/or dying. The finale has the Cosmic Guardian state that Anne still has 78 years left in the living world, indirectly stating that Anne dies at 91, which she tries to call the Cosmic Guardian out on only to be cut off by her return.
All my friends are Toxic.Explanation Thanks to this Fan Animation Video, the song "Toxic" By BoyWithUke is used in a lot of AMVs, as the song's lyrics about toxic relationships sum up a lot of the series's toxic friendships and betrayals in a way, especially when it comes to episodes like "True Colors" and "The Core & The King."
Do you get deja vu?Explanation After the scene of Anne's mother unknowingly recreating Marcy's stabbing in front of her with Anne reacting very little in "Escape To Amphibia", video edits of the similarities and parallels of both scenes, as well as of other additional scenes and parallels in the series being backed with the song "deja vu" by Olivia Rodrigo playing in the background became a very popular short AMV idea for people to make.
This is but a scratch. Explanation (Spoilers) Some fans like to point out that after Sasha gets a massive cut on her back and Grime loses his arm in "All In", they're standing around in the end like nothing happened. Some exaggerate this into straight-up Major Injury Underreaction.
Green blood.Explanation (Spoilers) As many fans point out, in "All In', during the fight with Darcy, Sasha ends up landing a cut on the former's face enough for it to bleed, only for the blood leaking out to be green. This implies that Marcy's genetics were altered thanks to Andrias's rejuvenation tank. The fact that this gets ignored and not brought up again has caused people to make up scenarios on the ramifications of how this could affect Marcy's body in the future, as well as everyone's reactions to it.
"Watch out, Anne, you're next."Explanation (Spoilers} Fans have noticed that the season finales end up culminating with one of the three girls ending up in a life-or-death situation, with Sasha falling off a tower only to be caught by Grime in season 1 and Marcy being stabbed In the Back by King Andrias in season 2, leading many to believe, especially due to the promos, that Anne would be completing the set in the season 3 Grand Finale. As it turns out, not only would Anne end up in a similar situation, she actually dies (albeit only briefly).
"Damn you, Thanos!" Explanation (Spoilers} Related to the above — Anne's Disney Death bears more than a passing resemblance to the casualties of Thanos' snap, leading fans to joke that Anne is now a part of the unlucky half of the universe.
Anne dies/Anne is dead.Explanation (Spoilers) In the finale, Anne suffers a Disney Death by sacrificing herself to destroy the Core, and is then brought back by the stones' creator. While this is plenty shocking on its own, an additional layer of What-The-Heck is added by the Guardian casually revealing that the version of Anne it's talking to is a backup copy, which Anne herself acknowledges is gonna cause her a serious existential crisis later down the line. The overall What Do You Mean, It's for Kids? nature of the situation became a meme, particularly the implication that the child protagonist of a Disney cartoon was technically Killed Off for Real.
It's Complicated.Explanation Thanks to some art by Matt Braly showing the Calamity Trio on the couch with said words on top explaining the nature of the three's relationship, this phrase became popular to use as a source for describing the Sashannarcy ship in addition to the "it's them" meme mentioned above.
Pre-Amphibia relationshipExplanation Fanartists and writers have often made a chart depicting how they headcanon the relationship to be like between the three girls before they ended up in Amphibia. More often than not, the three are in some kind of Love Triangle (often with Marcy liking Sasha, Sasha liking Anne, and Anne liking Marcy), whether Oblivious to Love or not.
Yes or Yes?Explanation The weekend after the release of "The Hardest Thing", when the show would usually air an episode, several fans posted about watching 'the latest Amphibia episode', "Yes or Yes", with some fans even making fake animatics, storyboards, and promoart. The supposed episode is titled after the prom invite seen in the background of Marcy's Lotus-Eater Machine in "Olivia & Yunan", and would feature post-timeskip Marcy either confessing her love to Anne and Sasha or a full on proposal.
There (sniff) THRE ARE MANY BENEFITS TO BEING A HERPETOLOGISTExplanation A popular nonsensical meme on tumblr (there are many benefits to being a marine biologist) with many fans feeling emotional that Anne became a herpetologist after her time on amphibia.
"This episode has some intense final scenes. It might be scary for younger viewers." Explanation A Content Warning added to "True Colors" after the episode was delayed, which drew mockery by fans for its addition. Especially since "True Colors" is the only time the warning is used and never again for subsequent episodes. Fans would make use of the warning adding it onto other series episodes such as The Owl House's Season 2 finale.
Owl House crossover.Explanation (Spoilers) In the final episode of The Owl House's season 2, Camila Noceda is seen reading an article about a girl lost in a frog world on her ipad, complete with a picture of Anne Boonchuy. Amphibia fans immediately took note of the Shout-Out, both because it confirmed the popular Fanon that the two shows have a Shared Universe, and for the surprise of getting new Amphibia content two weeks after the finale. Helped along by "King's Tide" having a very similar ending to "True Colors", with a tearjerking separation of the main heroine and her close friend before she's sent to Earth with her Found Family and no way back.
"I can't believe Anne Losing An Arm paid off twice"Explanation (Spoilers) Anne losing an arm was one of the major Epileptic Trees of the show, which ended up being slightly off; Someone does lose an arm in "All In", but it's Grime, not Anne. In "King's Tide", the final episode of The Owl House's season 2, Eda Clawthorne also loses her arm, having it ripped of by her love interest Raine to save her from the draining spell that targets coven marks on the wrist
Andrias Cup Size? Explanation An Amphibia twitter account replied to many Matt Braly tweets with images of Megamind with the text "Andrias cup size?" imposed on them. He even replied to some of them.
Bald Anne. Explanation In a short flashback in the episode "Bessie and MicroAngelo", Anne's attempted makeover by Sasha and Marcy ends up with her being shaved bald. The screenshot of the result is often used in memes with Anne's bald head being placed in the backgound scenes of other shows such as The Owl House.
Sasharcy coming throughExplanation While all ships between the main trio are popular, Sasha and Marcy are given the least amount of focus in the show itself, as they never have any scenes alone and any scenes with Anne tend to focus on Sasha and Anne's antagonistic relationship with Marcy as the mediator. This lead to a joke that Sasharcy is The Un-Favorite of the calamity trio ships. Then the final three episodes of the show ended up blowing Sasharcy shippers out of the water with the amount of content; In "Beginning of the End", Sasha privately expresses concern about her relationship with Marcy to Anne, and furiously threatens to rip of Darcy's helmet. In "All-In", Sasha, not Anne, is the one to fight and defeat Darcy to save Marcy. In "The Hardest Thing", the two seem attached at the hip, always standing close or holding each other, and even the Distant Finale focuses on them before shifting to Anne. Even Matt Braly seems to get in on the Sasharcy content, making an artwork depicting the two holding hands and Sasha giving Marcy a loving look.
Marcy Regina WuExplanation On the 2nd of May 2022, the first few pages of Marcy's Journal were leaked. In said pages, Marcy refers to herself by the full name Marcy Regina Wu. The fandom immediately imploded by the revelation that Marcy apparently not only had a middle name the whole time, but that her middle name is Regina.
Sasha Elizabeth WaybrightExplanation A followup meme that started when Matt casually revealed in an interview on August 2nd 2022 that Sasha's middle name is Elizabeth. Aside from continuing the previous meme, it also led to joke that "Elizabeth" is the whitest possible name Sasha could have. In a bit of Hilarious in Hindsight, Elizabeth was one of the most commonly joked middle names for Sasha after the Regina reveal
WormphibiaExplanation In response to the "The Worm House" meme from The Owl House, fans of Amphibia decided to follow suit by turning the characters into worms as well. It even became a trending topic on Twitter! Matt Braly is understandably disturbed by this.
Anne likes frogsExplanation Stemming from the episode "Cracking Ms. Croaker", where Anne finds a picture of Ms. Croaker as a younger woman and calls her hot. Fans were torn between celebrating that Anne apparently finds women attractive, and groaning that she specifically finds frog women attractive
Sasha the therapistExplanation (Spoilers) In the final episode's Distant Finale, Sasha is revealed to become a psychologist when she grows up, helping kids with emotional baggage. This quickly caused a crossover meme with several other shows, namely The Owl House, joking that Sasha is the therapist of the various traumatized kid characters from those shows. The meme gained a lot of popularity after the Owl House's season finale had Luz and her friends get stuck in the human realm, with several pieces of fanart and comics depicting them going to therapy with Sasha.
"I'M ANNE BOONCHUY! I'M ANNE BOONCHUY!" "She's Anne Boonchuy!" Explanation In "Froggy Little Christmas", Anne and Sprig inexplicably shout this during the parade, ironically right after Andrias groans about how hard it'll be for him to find them. Fans joke about Anne's lack of effort at staying under-the-radar, claim she must've had too much eggnog, or claim that they can't tell who she's supposed to be and need more hints.
Hop Pop's body countExplanation In the episode "Little Frogtown", Hop Pop knocks a security guard into a boiling vat of sauce. Said security guard is not seen again, but it's later mentioned that the other guards found a body in one of the sauce vats. This makes Hop Pop one of the few characters in the show to have comitted a murder, and the joke in "Bizarre Bazaar" where Hop Pop dodges the question if he has ever killed a man implies that he might have killed more frogs before. Needless to say, the fact that Hop Pop has a higher killcount than characters like Sasha or Grime very quickly became a meme.
Anne's body countExplanation Similar to the meme above, fans have begun bringing up how Anne set off an explosion in "Night at the Inn" that the cannibal innkeepers were caught in. With the show never clarifying their fates, it's become common to joke about how Anne, the most moral of the Calamity Trio, is the only one of the three with an actual body count.
WeedExplanation Leaked pages from the original pilot pitch reveal this character who would eventually be replaced by Sprig. Reddit users quickly started to make fun of his name and design.
NdriasExplanation(Spoilers) There have been a few who have pointed out just how similar King Andrias is to N, so he has been given this Fan Nickname.
Pineapple PizzaExplanation In the episode "Hop Luck" Anne shows disdain for the pizza topping after Sprig suggested it. This lead to many memes and joke posts about Anne freaking out whenever someone puts pineapple on pizza or her condemning the food as a god.
"EAT THE RICH!"Explanation In "Fight at the Museum", Hop Pop shouts this well-known far-left phrase before severing a Frobot's arm with a guillotine. This is often used as a counter to his earlier line from "Marcy at the Gates" about his people not being "anarchists", as well as him being the literal face of a political movement in Season 1.
