Power Rangers Cosmic Defenders is a fanfiction by Androzani84, based on Uchuu Sentai Kyuranger. It takes place in the same continuity as his previous story Power Rangers Wing Force.
The plot concerns a group of beings from different planets being recruited to save the universe from a malevolent dictator by artefacts known as the Cosmo Spheres. As the story continues, more about each of the Rangers is revealed.
The Cosmic Defenders are:
- Yuri Michaels/Red Ranger: The Hero. Originally an astronaut from Earth, he ended up lost in space with no knowledge of his past other than his name and home planet. He also has a second personality within him, who gets revealed when he attacks the others under its influence. Chosen by the Lion-01 Cosmo Sphere.
- Myron/Orange Ranger: The Spock, who also provides the team with upgrades and ideas. A Human Alien from the planet Sori, who has major issues opening up to others. Has issues concerning the the fate of his older brother - or rather, presumed fate. Chosen by the Scorpion-02 Cosmo Sphere.
- Jiro/Blue Ranger: A humanoid dog-man who comes along with Yuri after being saved from captivity. His home planet was ravaged prior to Gingaku’s conquest, which makes him unable to Morph at first. Chosen by the Werewolf-03 Cosmo Sphere.
- Scales/Gold Ranger: A robot man. He first appears partnered with Cobras, having protected the planet Matoine for a while before the other Rangers show up. Chosen by the Balance-04 Cosmo Sphere.
- Tarrant/Black Ranger: A bulky robot, resembling a bull. Originally built as a weapon of destruction by Dr. Cerebron, he was allowed to go free when Myron (who was the doctor’s assistant) realised he had a soul. But due to a misunderstanding, Tarrant initially wants to kill Myron for burning his creator to death. Chosen by the Bull-05 Cosmo Sphere.
- Cobras/Silver Ranger: A Human Alien, The Last of His Kind following the destruction of his planet by Gingaku. Takes his duty protecting other planets from Gingaku seriously, to the point of briefly turning against the other Rangers when it seems like they allowed a planet to be destroyed. Chosen by the Serpent-06 Cosmo Sphere.
- Mila/Green Ranger: The Lancer, another Human Alien who generally leads the team when it comes to fighting. A ninja from a low level society, who was the first to become a Ranger and subsequently assemble the others as a team. Chosen by the Chameleon-07 Cosmo Sphere.
- Winda/Pink Ranger: The Smart Girl. Originally a server droid for Gingaku, she changes sides to the Rangers, after they point out to her just what Gingaku entails. Chosen by the Eagle-08 Cosmo Sphere.
- Slash(Real name “Mervic Oregano”)/Yellow Ranger: Deadpan Snarker. yet another Human Alien. Formerly a chef with his own restaurant, he was forced to close by Gingaku due to Malicious Slander. Chosen by the Swordfish-08 Cosmo Sphere.
- Drago/Dragon Ranger: Eccentric Mentor. Everyone calls him “Commander”, even though he possesses no such rank. Chosen by the Dragon-10 Cosmo Sphere.
- Barry/Sky Ranger: Tagalong Kid. A human who was taken from Earth as a baby and subsequently returned to Earth when he receives a message calling him there from his new home planet. Adopted by a friend of Drago’s, which is the only reason he’s allowed to stay with the Rangers. Chosen by the Cub-11 and Bear-22 Cosmo Spheres.
- Proton/Fire Knight: Twelth Ranger. He battled against Lord Gingaku decades before the other Rangers assembled, before being placed in a form of stasis until he was needed again in the present. Chosen by the Firebird-12 Cosmo Sphere.
Typical Power Rangers Tropes include:
- Animal Themed Super Being: 11 of the Rangers are based on animals. Gold is the exception, being based on Libra the Scales.note
- Arm Cannon: In addition to being transformation devices, the Cosmo Morpher doubles as a ranged weapon too, though this is mostly reserved for a Finishing Move.
- Big Bad: Lord Gingaku, real name Orbis.
- Big Good:
- Once he returns to life, Astral Leo serves this role.
- Among the Earth Resistance, this role is held by Lulu Goodman.
- By the Power of Grayskull!:
- To transform, the Rangers call out “Cosmic Energy, Unleash!”, with Yuri using the signature “It’s Morphing Time!” as a rallying cry.
- When he has to transform on his own, Drago calls out “Charge Up!” Most of the time, he just goes with the above.
- Proton announces the steps of the transformation in one word each (“Set! Rise! Change!) note
- Clip Show: Chapter 18 manages to be this in text form. To his credit, the author does add in plenty of new content, with the recycled text merely being to avoid rewriting the same events out again.
- Color-Coded Characters: Notable for having nine colors to start off with, including silver and gold, which are often reserved for sixth rangers. It also has the franchise's first Orange Ranger (Sorry Boom).
- Combining Mecha: The Cosmo Zords, based on each ranger's motif. Uniquely, however, is that the majority of Zords can all form either an arm or a leg rather than having a single set position, something that hasn't been seen since Power Rangers Time Force and never to this degree. This makes them a literal Mix and Match variety.
- Lion Zord + 4 limb Zords = Cosmo Megazord. The Eagle Zord can also optionally attach to its back to give it a flight mode.
- Dragon Zordnote + 2 limb Zords = Dragon Star Megazord
- Cosmo Megazord + Dragon Star Megazord = Cosmo Dragon Megazord
- Fire Voyager + Fire Satelite = Fire Voyager Megazord
- Fire Voyager Megazord + Mega Base + the Lion Zord + the other 10 Rangers’ Cosmo Spheres = Zodiac Megazord
- Shooting Star Ship transforms into the Shooting Star Megazord with the power of the Orion-13 Cosmo Sphere.
- Leo Zord + Lion Zord or Cosmo Megazord = Astral Leo or Astral Leo Megazord.
- Exclusive to episode 19: Tri-Hound Zord+ 4 limb Zords = Tri-Hound Megazord
- Five-Man Band: Zigzagged. The team consists of nine Rangers plus, but only five go out of missions on average at a time. As this lasts for about an episode, it is hard to associate a Kyuranger with a role other than Red being The Leader (and even he sits some battles out).
- Humongous Mecha: the Cosmo Megazord, the Dragon Star Megazord, the Fire Voyager Megazord, and the Shooting Star Megazord; the former two of which have multiple versions based on which Rangers combine with The Lion or Dragon Zords.
- In the Name of the Moon: Each member names their motif and color in a The X of Y style.Yuri: Fire of the Lion, Red Ranger!Super Modes:Power of the Sun, Solar Red Ranger!Power of the Moon, Lunar Red Ranger! The Warrior of Light, Big Bang Ranger!Myron: Venom of the Scorpion, Orange Ranger!Jiro: Claw of the Wolf, Blue Ranger!Scales: The Balance between Good and Evil, Gold Ranger!Tarrant: Strength of the Bull, Black Ranger!Cobras: Glimmer of the Serpent, Silver Ranger! /The Envoy of Dark, Silver Ranger, Void Mode!)Mila: Stealth of the Chameleon, Green Ranger!Winda: Agility of the Eagle, Pink Ranger!Slash: Blade of the Swordfish, Yellow Ranger!Drago: Roar of the Dragon, Dragon Ranger!”Barry: Howl of the Bear, Sky Ranger!Proton: The Burning Challenger, Fire Knight!Yuri: Bringing the Universe together,…All: Power Rangers Cosmic Defenders!
- Law of Chromatic Superiority: Yuri is the only Ranger to have a Cosmo Sphere representing a system other than his own, plus he’s possessed by the Big Good of the series, giving him greater powers than the rest. However, this is slightly downplayed, as the first to receive any power-ups and the one to bring the team together are Myron and Mila respectively.
- Make My Monster Grow:
- Zigzagged. While Gingaku members are implanted with a growth implant that revives them as a giant, only the higher-ups are allowed this privilege. Others have to rely on Humongous Mecha known as Gearoids.
- Commanagas, Terrorvores and Neo-Bullroids can all grow on their own when significantly damaged, or at will.
- Non-Uniform Uniform: Beyond usual things such as the suit colors and helmet designs, each Cosmo Ranger also has additional features. Taking Red as the default, we have:
- Orange has a scorpion tail.
- Blue has a fur ruff around his collar as though it was sticking out from his helmet. His gloves and boots also have claws. His uniform also has furry fuzz, most visible on the shoulders and thighs. The mouth part of the helmet also has fangs.
- Gold has a more armored form than the others, and looks somewhat mechanical.
- Black has a much bulkier body than the others, as well as the horns of his visor extending past the helmet. He actually keeps most of his untransformed look intact. The uniform's belt even goes over his champion belt.
- Silver has a scale pattern going down his suit.
- Green's helmet has the chameleon's head facing upward with the eyes popped out, and the mouth acts as the visor.
- Pink has a pair of small wings on her back.
- Yellow has the front of his visor extend forward, much like a swordfish's bill.
- Dragon Ranger has black shoulder armor. His transformation into a real Ranger adds a flowing trenchcoat-like cape.
- Sky Ranger wears a scarf around his neck and a pair of mittens that conceal bear claws inside. He can use the former to fight enemies.
- Fire Knight has a drastically different designed suit than the others, swapping most of the colors for black but the black parts for red accents, and most notably his helmet has a headseat microphone-like projection. (Justified in his case, due to having the Cosmo Sphere merge with his spacesuit to create his Ranger suit).
- She's a Man in Japan: Applied to Magera, the Monster of the Week from Space 33, turning him into the female General Tensil.
- Sixth Ranger: Commander Drago as the Dragon Ranger and Proton as the Fire Knight. The Sky Ranger also qualifies, with Barry joining the team shortly after Drago, though he doesn't have the usual trappings of one (unique Transformation Trinket, weapon, Zord, etc.) while Drago and Proton do.
- Sorting Algorithm of Evil: The Rangers’ opponents in Gingaku start off with Planetary Controllers, followed by assassins, then by the three Victorious Generals and their minions.
- Super Mode:
- Yuri gets several enhanced modes, two of which can be used by the others:
- The Pegasus-33 Cosmo Sphere summons Pegasus, who acts as a chestplate and can fight by controlling the host’s body.
- The Sun/Moon Dual Sphere can be used in either Sun or Moon mode. Both forms also power up a second Ranger, with the Sun giving Scales and Cobras a bunch of extra energy while the Moon strengthens Jiro, making him more poised and controlled.
- The Big Bang-315 Cosmo Sphere turns him into the Big Bang Ranger, changing his suit completely white and giving him access to all of his team's weapons.
- Myron and Barry are introduced with their own super modes, known as Double Sting and Jumbo forms respectively.
- Cobras obtains his Void Mode shortly before Yuri gets Big Bang, though it starts as a Superpowered Evil Side.
- Yuri gets several enhanced modes, two of which can be used by the others:
- Swiss-Army Weapon: The Cosmo Weapons, in practice anyway. It's actually a weapon with many forms, but each ranger has their preferred form.
- Red uses the Cosmo Saber
- Orange uses the Cosmonata and so does the Sky Ranger.
- Blue uses the Cosmo Claw
- Gold uses the Cosmo Rifle
- Black uses the Cosmo Axe
- Silver uses the Cosmo Scythe
- Green uses the Cosmo Blade
- Pink uses the Cosmo Blaster
- Yellow uses the Cosmo Dagger
- Transformation Trinket: The wrist-worn Cosmo Morpher, and the Cosmo Spheres, collectible trinkets modeled after globes and gyroscopes. Shou transforms with his Dragon Staff. Proton similarly uses his weapon to transform, the Galaxy Saber.
- Transforming Mecha: Unusually for this trope, it's Gingaku who has more of these, the Dark Gears which changes from spaceship to control tower to giant robot (referred to as Gearoids) and back, while the Rangers use mostly Combining Mecha.
- Two Girls to a Team: Pink and Green.
- Utility Belt: The Rangers' belts are where the Cosmo Spheres are summoned from and if they need to use them, much like the Ranger Keys are pulled from their Rangers' belt buckle.
Tropes exclusive to Power Rangers Cosmic Defenders include:
- Adaptational Badass:
- Whereas Kukuruga fell to the Orion Big Bang Cannon and had to be rebuilt, Coiloga survives the equivalent here.
- Unlike the Champ Zeroes, which were a mass-produced Super Prototype, the Neo-Bullroids are intended as a Superior Successor to Tarrant.
- Adaptational Heroism: In Kyuranger, Stinger’s brother Scorpio turned on their tribe of his own will and gave himself over to Jark Matter. Here, Heath is merely being controlled by an evil Split Personality trying to take over.
- Adaptational Villainy:
- Dark Soul is a pure-blooded villain, while his Sentai counterpart Aslan was merely Brainwashed and Crazy.
- Dr. Cerebron doesn’t have the redeeming qualities of Dr. Anton, being a major part of Gingaku’s operations long before the series started.
- While Cobras is brainwashed much like Naga was, it is much more consensual on his part.
- Adaptational Wimp: Basco in his home series was a Manipulative Bastard of the highest order, who had a number of Kick the Dog moments to his name. Bucchan, who uses the same design here, is a coward who begs for help and is unceremoniously offed by Spectrum. This gets zigzagged in his reappearance, where he can hold his own in a fight, but still gets defeated in a fight he was winning by Barry.
- Alternate Universe: Implied by the lack of SPD within the context of the fic, as they likely would’ve taken a stand against Gingaku’s conquest.
- Ascended Extra:
- Dark Soul, Cerebron and Spectrum appear much more frequently and earlier than their Sentai counterparts Aslan, Dr. Anton and Scorpio.
- Internal to the story, Kota starts out as an old friend of Mila’s, before becoming the Monster of the Week to chapter 30, and then joining the regular cast for the final arc.
- Authority in Name Only:
- Commander Drago was merely given the title of “Commander” by Mila, to help sell the cause to others.
- It’s mentioned that all authority figures in the universe have been rendered this by Gingaku.
- Back from the Dead:
- Kota is revived by Dark Soul in chapter 35.
- Gingaku has this as an ability.
- A horde of past villains appear in the final episode. None of the Rangers question this.
- Bilingual Bonus: Tons of it.
- Mila’s home planet Talpa comes from the Latin word for “chameleon”. Similarly, her school is named “Verde”, from the Spanish word for “green”.
- Myron’s home planet Sori is shortened from “sasori”, Japanese for “scorpion”.
- Jiprak’s name is the Belarus word for “scorpion”. Word of God is that it was chosen because it was the only translation that wasn’t just a lazy respelling of the English word.
- Tategami, the planet in the Lion Galaxy where Yuri woke up with no memory, is Japanese for “mane”, as in a lion’s mane.
- Bond One-Liner:
- “This Space is ours.”
- Proton briefly uses “Now that was hot.”
- Breaking Old Trends: Compared to your grandpa’s Power Rangers.
- This fic features the villains having already achieved total control of the universe, as opposed to merely seeking it. Thus, the Rangers are trying to liberate the universe rather than protect it.
- Gold and Silver are part of the main team, as opposed to the Sixth Ranger (though Cobras’ number is still “06”).
- The Green Ranger is female, something only done in Power Rangers (2017).
- Can't Catch Up: Averted. Despite only a handful of Rangers getting unique power-ups, the others are still shown to be just as good at fighting.
- Chekhov M.I.A.:
- Pegasus’ debut has him mentioning Astral Leo, the one who chose the Rangers and created the Cosmo Spheres. He ultimately turns out to be living inside Yuri several chapters later.
- Chapter 1’s first scene shows Yuri with a co-pilot called Gregory, who is absent after the Time Skip to the fic’s present. He turns out to be The Dragon Dark Soul, having become convinced that Yuri abandoned him to die and turned on him.
- Chekhov's Gunman:
- The unseen scientist working with Dark Soul turns out to be Dr. Cerebron, Tarrant’s inventor and Myron’s former boss.
- The mysterious Spectrum turns out to be Myron’s brother Heath.
- Chronic Backstabbing Disorder: Avoided with most of Gingaku, but played straight with the three Victorious Generals, who seem to enjoy belittling and tricking each other. Even stranger when it’s revealed they’re the same guy.
- Climactic Battle Resurrection: In the finale, the constant abuse of the Anima Core causes several defeated opponents to reappear as a minor obstacle.
- Clone by Conversion: Gingaku turns out to have this ability, with anyone who has his DNA placed in their body eventually turning into a clone of him. It happened to Proton’s friend Corvin and it eventually happens to Proton himself.
- Continuity Nod:
- Yuri woke up following the invasion on the Lion Galaxy.
- Spectrum launches attacks on past Ranger bases, but the one explicitly shown is Grid Battleforce’s vault.
- The commander of La Résistance is Lulu Goodman from the author’s previous story Power Rangers Wing Force. At one point in the Time Travel episode, Barry goes back to chapter 16 of that fic and sees her in her prime.
- In the aforementioned Time Travel episode, Scales gets sent back to the Legendary Battle. Likewise, this allows him to recognise the Rangers of the past when he discovers them on Black.
- Crapsack World: The entire universe being under the control of evil would certainly qualify as this.
- Crossover: Aside from the aforementioned Wing Force callback, chapter 35 onwards is partially set in the same town as Power Rangers RPM Re Geared, even featuring a cameo from that fic’s Rangers.
- Daddy's Little Villain: The original Cha-ChaMari is Gingaku’s daughter.
- Damsel in Distress: Towards the end, Pamela ends up targeted by Dark Soul.
- Darker and Edgier: Then standard Power Rangers shows. Also is this compared to Kyuranger, with a lot of the Mood Whiplash and Beat moments being less frequent.
- Darkest Hour: Chapter 38 has Gingaku having taken over Proton via Grand Theft Me, his three Co-Dragons Came Back Strong, the Rangers’ powers are in the hands of the villains, 5 of the Rangers are (seemingly) dead and Yuri has lost all memory of the past 5 years.
- Disc-One Final Boss: Gingaku gets killed off in chapter 33, with Dark Soul taking over as the antagonist afterwards. Subverted, as Gingaku comes back later on and resumes his position.
- Dragon Ascendant:
- Cha-ChaMari tries invoking this when Gingaku dies. No-one takes her seriously though and she dies shortly after.
- Played Straight with Dark Soul, who successfully a,Agnes to take control of Gingaku’s remnants and stage a counterattack that costs the Resistance on Earth their base. Too bad Gingaku ends up coming back.
- Dramatic Irony: As of chapter 9, the audience is aware that Dark Soul is Yuri’s Evil Former Friend Gregory, but the Rangers don’t even know that he’s evil.
- Early-Installment Weirdness: It takes several episodes before the author gets straight names for every attack name.
- Evil Former Friend: Seems to be a recurring thing in this series. In addition to the aforementioned Dark Soul and Spectrum, Mila’s friend Kota is shown to have joined with Gingaku after she left her planet.
- Evil Knockoff: Dr. Cerebron creates an evil version of the Ranger’s Morpher, which gets given to Cobras to brainwash him. Notable in that while the Rangers summon their Morphers using the Cosmo Spheres, the Cosmo Sphere is summoned using the Gingaku Morpher.
- Expy: Proton is a Sixth Ranger who also wears red and isn't that different to the main red. He’s basically Eric, if he was less of a jerk.
- The Fellowship Has Ended: At the end of the fic, Yuri and Kyle return to their normal lives, Myron and Mila return to their home planets to rebuild, Scales and Cobras go off into space, Winda becomes a robot rights activist, Slash reopens his restaurant and the rest of the Rangers go off to mop up the leftovers of Gingaku’s conquest.
- For the Evulz: This seems to be Coiloga’s reason for doing anything.
- Foreshadowing:
- Gingaku’s dragon Dark Soul condemns Yuri to death, despite the fact that as far as he knows, all he’s done is try and fail to help a thief escape. Sounds like Disproportionate Retribution, right? Turns out he has other reasons for wanting him dead.
- Drago begins experimenting with a cane when Squideyasu shows up. Seems like he’s being Properly Paranoid, right? It’s revealed in the next chapter that It's Personal between them, and Drago was desperate to beat his old friend with their project.
- Lethnock being so sure that the pollution on Kakyesu will go away if he’s given the sacred treasure (One of three Legendary Cosmo Spheres needed for the current quest) hints that he himself is causing said pollution and will only disperse it when he receives his goal.
- The Victorious Generals having the titles of Right, Left and Centre Generals respectively hints at their eventual fusion into one being, with their heads being on the part of the body their titles indicate.
- Cobras becomes something of a Butt-Monkey once Proton shows up, which is part of the reason he eventually turns on the other Rangers.
- From Nobody to Nightmare: Gingaku was once very low on the totem pole of his organisation. Now he’s the leader of it and they’ve conquered the universe.
- Hate Sink: Coiloga of the three Victorious Generals. He treats his own comrades with disdain, even temporarily killing Tricerodo. He also turns out to be responsible for Yuri’s shuttle crash, Myron’s brother joining Gingaku, Cobras’ planet being destroyed, Mila’s friends being wiped out, Slash’s restaurant closing and Barry being separated from his birth parents.
- Heel–Face Turn: Kota and Gregory eventually pull this.
- Kill the God: Gingaku destroys Astral Leo in order to steal the Rangers’ powers. However, he left his power to Yuri so it couldn’t be fully drained by Gingaku.
- Killed Off for Real: While Dark Soul can eventually revive anyone from their weapons, Cerebron left no such weapon and thus remains dead after his defeat by the Rangers.
- Meaningful Name:
- Yuri is named for Yuri Gagarin, the first man in space.
- Proton is named after YouTube user ProtoDubs, who is a fan of the original character.
- Mythology Gag:
- The planet at the centre of the Lion Galaxy is named Kaien, which in itself, was a roundabout homage to Kyuranger.
- The second episode has Yuri narrowly escaping certain death thanks to a tidal wave consuming his two attackers, causing him to comment “Alright, lucky.”, the catchphrase of his counterpart.
- Winda’s pre Heel–Face Turn name R-283 is the initial and “surname” of her counterpart.
- Tricerodo taking over Cobras’ mind calls to mind Lothor hijacking the Wind Rangers’ minds. Bonus points for both using a fake morphing device to do so.
- Crosslice is a monster associated with Crux who gets defeated by the power of Cassiopeia. Like the original big bad of Super Sentai.
- Nice Job Breaking It, Hero:
- Cobras’ Out of Focus status and the other Rangers not giving him any reassurance over his role as the Butt-Monkey leads to him siding with Tricerodo once she gives him some positive reinforcement.
- Winda bragging about her connectivity to the Gingaku network allows General Tensil to hijack her mind using said network.
- Nice Job Fixing It, Villain:
- Metaro’s actions in the early chapters cause a chain of events that lead to the Rangers being fully assembled with twelve members.
- Tricerodo turning Cobras evil not only gives the other Rangers determination to help Yuri unlock his Next Tier Power-Up, but also gives Cobras his own power-up when he gets free.
- Nigh-Invulnerability: The 3 Victorious Generals take a lot more punishment than the standard Tokusatsu main villains and manage to shrug it off. Which makes the Rangers’ defeats of Katseayor and Coiloga all the more satisfying.
- No Man Should Have This Power: Yuri gets given Astral Leo’s powers after his death, but relinquishes them after the battle with evil is over, since Gingaku’s quest for said powers was what kicked the whole plot off.
- No Endor Holocaust: Justified, as Cobras sucks the explosion of Gingaku’s lair into an Unrealistic Black Hole, while Yuri uses his Big Bang Sphere’s heretofore unmentioned restoration powers to fix the damage.
- Noble Demon:
- Cruelly Subverted With Spectrum. At first, he appears to be working to dismantle Gingaku’s control of the universe from within. But then he reveals that he doesn’t want to free the universe, he wants to rule it himself.
- Tricerodo is another subverted example, almost to Jerk with a Heart of Jerk levels. Her concern for Cobras’ development as a warrior and stated desire to bring peace to the universe? Both faked so that she could have her own Ranger as a servant.
- Not So Stoic:
- Winda spends the first 4 chapters being a fairly generic android. But once she becomes a Ranger, she starts screaming with joy.
- Myron shows anger when he confronts his brother for the first time in years and a desire to ride in the Zodiac Megazord when he sees it for the first time.
- One-Steve Limit: Averted. The evil organisation and its leader are both named Gingaku. The latter is an inherited title. His real name is Orbis.
- Out of Focus:
- Cobras, until it comes time to handle the Hebitsukai Metal arc.
- Scales and Jiro also get the short end of the stick in terms of character focus. Neither has had a whole episode dedicated to them.
- Paper-Thin Disguise:
- Chapter 19 has Mila and Scales using a Cosmo Sphere to disguise themselves as pretty women to distract the guards to a door. Neither of said guards question this.
- Tarrant as Der Toro, due to mangling together multiple different languages to create the persona.
- Rank Scales with Asskicking: Commander Goodman manages to deal significant damage to Cobras in his brainwashed state, after the regular Rangers were unable to touch him for two chapters. Too bad he can still use Cosmo Spheres to fight back.
- Shout-Out:
- The Cosmo Spheres get their name and theme naming from Chousei Kantai Sazer X‘s Cosmo Capsules.
- Dark Soul is an intimidating right-hand man in a mask who serves a hooded emperor. Now where does that sound familiar?
- Astral Leo? Bonus points for his Cosmo Sphere being numbered “77”
- The blue wolf of the team is named Jiro.
- Cobras was named for the villain of The Pumaman.
- Shout-Out Theme Naming:
- Gingaku’s higher ups are mostly named for Sengoku-era figures.
- Myron and his brother Heath/Spectrum are one to Bakugan Battle Brawlers.
- Take That!: The author wasn’t happy with the reveal that Evox was Venjix all along. So in the next chapter after the reveal was made, Jiro suggests that Gingaku might be a reincarnation of Dark Specter, but gets shot down by Myron.
- Trash the Set: Commander Goodman blows up Providence Base to try and stop Dark Soul.
- Villain World: Gingaku rules the whole universe.
