''The LEGO Movie 2: The Second Part'' is a 2019 CGI animated space action comedy. It is the sequel to 2014's ''WesternAnimation/TheLegoMovie'', with Creator/PhilLordAndChrisMiller again writing the script (with Creator/RaphaelBobWaksberg of ''WesternAnimation/BojackHorseman'' fame providing uncredited rewrites) and Mike Mitchell of ''WesternAnimation/{{Trolls}}'' and ''Film/{{Sky High|2005}}'' fame taking the director's chair.

Five years after the events of the DUPLO invasion, the town of Bricksburg has fallen into ruins, becoming known as Apocalypseburg. The people who live there have hardened their hearts and toughened up... except The Special himself, Emmet Brickowski, who continues to be hopeful that one day everything will be awesome again. Tragedy strikes when a new threat from a far-off world abducts Emmet's five best friends, prompting him to spring into action to rescue them. Transforming his house into a spaceship, he gives chase and follows the invaders to parts unknown, crossing paths with Rex Dangervest, an intergalactic raptor trainer who may be able to teach him how to be the tough, fierce warrior he needs to be to get his friends back.

Meanwhile, Lucy and the others are taken to the mysterious Systar System, where they meet the many colorful creatures there, including talking candy, an attractive non-threatening teenage vampire and a shapeshifting queen who's totally not at all evil. Nope, definitely not. Not buying it for a second, Lucy takes it upon herself to find out the secrets of this place before it's too late.

Creator/ChrisPratt, Creator/ElizabethBanks, Creator/WillArnett, Creator/NickOfferman, Creator/AlisonBrie, and Creator/CharlieDay return to reprise their roles from the first movie, with newcomers Creator/TiffanyHaddish and Creator/StephanieBeatriz added to the cast.

This is the last LEGO movie to be produced by Creator/WarnerBros, as the license was dropped in 2019. Universal has picked up the rights since then, with the first Universal-era LEGO film being a Music/PharrellWilliams documentary called ''Piece by Piece''.

!!''The LEGO Movie 2: The Second Part'' provides examples of:

[[foldercontrol]]

[[folder:Tropes A to G]]
* AbnormalAmmo: Sweet Mayhem's ship fires stars and exploding hearts while her blaster fires stickers.
* ActionBomb: The talking hearts fired by Sweet Mayhem's ship.
* ActorAllusion:
** Rex Dangervest is a CompositeCharacter of [[Film/GuardiansOfTheGalaxy2014 Star-Lord]], [[Film/JurassicWorld Owen Grady]] and [[Film/TheMagnificentSeven2016 Josh Faraday]]. With Emmet being similar to [[Series/ParksAndRecreation Andy Dwyer]], Creator/ChrisPratt is essentially reprising all four of his most well-known live-action roles.
*** Another of Rex's title cards boasts about his "chiseled features previously hidden under baby fat" (reflecting Chris Pratt going from tubby to ripped for ''Guardians of the Galaxy'').
*** Later on, Rex mentions that he is also a [[Film/{{Moneyball}} first baseman]] and it's shown that his username on some sort of Instagram lookalike is "rexrexrex", similar to how Chris Pratt's handle on Instagram and Twitter is "prattprattpratt".
*** Emmet has a similar experience to ''Film/GuardiansOfTheGalaxyVol2'', in which he visits another planet, then [[spoiler:gets betrayed by his new mentor]].
** When Queen Watevra Wa'Nabi shows off her shapeshifting abilities, [[Creator/WillArnett Batman]] says he prefers [[WesternAnimation/BojackHorseman the horse]].
** This is also most likely a reference to Haddish repeatedly referring to herself as "The Last Black Unicorn", which was the basis for a sketch she was in on SNL and the title of her first memoir.
** When Sweet Mayhem has her helmet on, she talks in a deeper voice, closer to the one that Stephanie Beatriz uses for [[Series/BrooklynNineNine Rosa Diaz]]. [[spoiler:After she takes the helmet off, Beatriz uses her normal speaking voice for the rest of the film.]]
** Creator/NoelFielding plays a CampStraight, androgynous vampire. He's not technically credited as playing himself, but it's not that far from the truth.
* AdamWesting: Creator/BruceWillis shows up, apparently [[LostInCharacter indistinguishable from]] [[Film/DieHard John McClane]] and [[SuspiciouslySpecificDenial repeatedly insists]] that he's not homeless and he actually doesn't live [[AirVentPassageway in air vents.]]
* AdrenalineMakeover: [[spoiler:After spending years stranded in Undar of the Dryar system, [[AlternateSelf Alternate Emmet/Rex Dangervest]] wields his anger at being forgotten to will himself to move in the real world. His first act upon escaping is to remodel himself to look like a NinetiesAntiHero, complete with a [[SignificantWardrobeShift new edgier vest]], [[ExpositoryHairstyleChange a messier hairstyle]] and drawing new features such as sharp cheekbones and PermaStubble on his face. Doubles as an EvilMakeover.]]
* AffectionateNickname: Briefly, Batman refers to Queen Watevra as "Watevs." She also calls him "babe" from time to time like Lucy used to do when they were together.
* AffectionateParody: Post-DUPLO invasion, Bricksburg is almost shamelessly similar to the Citadel in ''Film/MadMaxFuryRoad''.
* AfterTheEnd: Bricksburg, post-DUPLO invasion. It's PlayedForLaughs considering that we see it from the perspective of Emmet, who retains his [[ThePollyanna jarringly upbeat and cheerful attitude]] despite the fact that the world has been more-or-less destroyed.
* AgonyOfTheFeet: [[spoiler:The breaking point for Finn and Bianca's mom is, of course, when she steps on a LEGO brick barefoot. ''Twice''. It's apparently a close second to the pain of childbirth.]]
* AlasPoorVillain: [[spoiler:Upon realizing that his friends coming back to save him means that [[RetGone he will have never existed in the first place]], Rex calmly [[FaceDeathWithDignity accepts his fate]] and gives Emmet some reassuring final words before vanishing into nonexistence [[GoOutWithASmile with a smile on his face.]]]]
* AllAnimalsAreDogs: Emmet delights a raptor with a tummy rub.
* AllThereInTheManual: Sweet Mayhem's first name is never actually spoken in the film, only being used in the credits and promotional material.
* AlmightyMom: [[spoiler:Whenever Finn and Bianca argue, the dad is nowhere to be found, leaving the mom to be the peacemaker.]]
* AlmostKiss: [[spoiler:Seems to be played with in regards to Batman and Watevra. They gush at each other on three separate occasions while bringing their faces within inches of each other, causing [[MomentKiller Ice Cream Cone]] to step between them every time in disgust.]]
* AlternateSelf:
** At two points in the movie, there are ''three'' Wonder Woman (Wonder Women?) on screen: LEGO, LEGO Friends, and DUPLO.
** While DCEU Aquaman went on an adventure with the Justice League, Original Aquaman (who was in the first LEGO Movie) stayed in Apocalypseburg.
** [[spoiler:Rex Dangervest is the EvilTwin of Emmet Brickowski from [[AlternateTimeline an alternate future]].]]
* AmbiguousSituation: [[spoiler:Is Rex Dangervest really from an alternate future and legitimately travelled back in time to change his past, or is he just another part of Finn's imagination along with his growing-up brought to life in the LEGO Universe? You be the judge]].
* AndIMustScream: [[spoiler:After Armamageddon happens and everyone is sucked into the Bin of Storaj, they're fully conscious but completely unable to move, doomed to be locked away in nothing but darkness, forever. At least until Lucy's refusal to accept their fate and Queen Watevra's revival spurs everyone into moving again.]]
** Rex's backstory also counts. He was stranded under a dryer for years, unable to move or get help.
* AndNowYouMustMarryMe: Queen Watevra's EvilPlan is [[spoiler:to have Batman marry her.]] What makes this interesting is that [[spoiler:she makes sure that Batman ''wants'' to marry her. After "Gotham City Guys," Batman proposes to her, she asks him if ''he'' is sure, and Batman is shown to be completely on board with the wedding. The whole thing was even intended to unite their two worlds in peace, so it wasn't even an EvilPlan at all!]]
* AndTheRest: Among Rex's raptors are [[Franchise/{{Alien}} Ripley]], [[Franchise/{{Terminator}} Connor]]... and "the other one".
* AngstWhatAngst: [[invoked]] PlayedForLaughs. Even though Emmet is living in a post-apocalyptic world, he's still his same, chipper self, and Wyldstyle tries to tell him to stop pretending everything is awesome. After Emmet says he'll try to do so, [[AttentionDeficitOohShiny he excitedly thinks he sees a shooting star]].
* AnswerCut: After [[spoiler:realizing the truth behind the Queen's intentions]], Wyldstyle asks who the bad guy is. Cut to [[spoiler:Rex, inside his ship, as he's ordering Emmet to destroy the temple]].
* TheAntiNihilist: Emmet keeps up a chipper attitude in spite of everything becoming a CrapsackWorld, [[spoiler:in stark contrast to Rex Dangervest, his future self, who became a StrawNihilist after spending years abandoned and left to meditate on the existence of the LEGO Worlds]].
* ApatheticCitizens: The people of Apocalypseburg chide Emmet for letting the gang be captured but will do nothing to help him rescue them.
* TheApunkalypse: Bricksburg AfterTheEnd, now renamed "Apocalypseburg".
* ArcWords:
** "Tough" is given a lot of emphasis.
** "Everything's Not Awesome", a direct rebuttal of the theme from the first movie. [[spoiler:Eventually, Emmet realizes that just because everything's not awesome all the time [[TheAntiNihilist is no reason to give up on life.]]]]
** "You started it," playing into the central theme of sibling conflict. [[spoiler: Bianca's not just trying to pass the blame onto Finn - she's admitting that the conflict started because she was trying to play with him the only way she thought he would enjoy.]]
** "War hardens the heart."
* ArsonMurderAndJaywalking: Lucy tries to get Unikitty to go into rage mode by shouting out things that she things will make her upset: "Poverty! Pollution! People putting raisins in stuff!" [[BerserkButton The last one is what does the trick.]]
* ArtEvolution: Zig-Zagged. Like with ''WesternAnimation/TheLegoBatmanMovie'' and ''WesternAnimation/TheLegoNinjagoMovie'', the film utilizes a few more particle effects (such as the sandstorms) that are less LEGO-like, but unlike the latter film, appears to have largely gone back to the "stop-motion" feel from the first film. The characters also have even greater range of movement than they did in the first film, similar to the aforementioned ''Ninjago'' movie.
* ArtificialLimbs: Benny now seems to have a robotic arm.
* ArtisticLicenseSpace: Rather blatantly, there is gravity in space when characters are travelling in spaceships between star systems. {{Justified|Trope}} though since they were never actually in space.
* AscendedMeme: After years of how memetic [[https://knowyourmeme.com/memes/i-hope-you-step-on-a-lego the pain of stepping on LEGO bricks]] has been, the movie finally has someone actually stepping on one. [[spoiler: Finn and Bianca's mom. She does this TWICE. She claims it's really close to the pain of childbirth]].
* AsHimself: Creator/BruceWillis, although he specifically dresses and acts like [[Film/DieHard John McClane.]]
* AsteroidThicket: Emmet's ship gets caught in a ''glass''teroid thicket.
* AttackAttackRetreatRetreat:
-->'''Apocalypseburg Residents:''' ''[charging out on vehicles to combat Sweet Mayhem]'' [[BattleChant Custom vehicles! Custom vehicles!]]\
'''Apocalypseburg Residents:''' ''[after the retreat call has been given, to the same beat as their chant]'' [[ScrewThisImOuttaHere Time to panic! Time to panic!]]
* AttentiveShadeLowering: After it's revealed that [[spoiler:the Systarians are GoodAllAlong]], Lucy asks Unikitty if she, Benny, and [=MetalBeard=] are brainwashed. Unikitty says [[spoiler:they're not]] and lowers her shades when she tells her about how much fun they're having.
* BadassInDistress: Lucy, Batman, Unikitty, Benny and Metal Beard, who are all badasses in their own way, get kidnapped by General Mayhem and Emmet ends up being the one who has to save them.
* BadIsGoodAndGoodIsBad: Both Lucy and Rex despise the Systar System's general happiness and believe it to be a hindrance to "toughness". In Rex's case, however, [[spoiler:it's for more malevolent reasons than mere distrust like Lucy.]]
* BaitAndSwitchCharacterIntro: When the characters are first introduced to Queen Watevra, a crown-wearing minidoll arrives on a horse, with the camera focusing on the minidoll. Then the Queen is revealed to be the horse and takes the crown, with the minidoll being a servant of hers. [[TrailersAlwaysSpoil If audiences]] [[invoked]][[SpoiledByTheMerchandise already know]] the horse is Watevra, the scene's whole set-up becomes redundant.
* {{Bathos}}: Like the previous film, the fact that the characters are made of LEGO bricks is frequently referenced for the sake of comedy... even in the middle of extremely dramatic moments.
** After Rex reveals the truth to Emmet [[spoiler:that he's Emmet from the future, turned evil]], it's an intensely dramatic scene... until Emmet admits that he missed all of the important details because he wasn't paying attention.
** Emmet's intense battle with [[spoiler:Rex/himself]] Undar the Dryar is depicted by [[StylisticSuck their minifigures being undramatically smacked into one another.]]
* BatmanCanBreatheInSpace: Spacesuits exist in this movie, but nobody seems to really need one.
** When Rex and Emmet jump out of Harmony Town into another planet, they don't even bother to put on spacesuits as they fall through empty space (Emmet does hold his breath, but it turns out he didn't need to).
** The Party Buses [[spoiler:taking all the Systarians to the Queen's Wedding]] deploy into party-mode in the middle of travel, which is in space. Everyone is probably too busy partying to care.
** In the final battle, [[spoiler:Lucy ejects herself into space without a suit in order to reach Undar.]]
* BattleCouple: The film has two of them. The first is Emmet and Lucy, who work perfectly together to get out of danger and defeat enemies. There's also [[spoiler:Batman and Queen Watevra Wa'Nabi, who prove to be such in the final climax of the film when she transforms into a battleship that Batman pilots]].
* TheBattlestar: The ''Rexcelsior'' can launch dinosaur-piloted {{Space Fighter}}s.
* BeCarefulWhatYouWishFor: Lucy and the residents of Apocalypseburg have grown so tired of Emmet's endless optimism and naivety that they wish for him [[DareToBeBadass to grow up and be tough like them]]. Emmet tries to follow his friends' advice, but not only does it make things worse, [[spoiler:it turns out that [[BigBad Rex Dangervest]] is the end result of Emmet trying to be the grown-up and tough person they wanted him to be, who in turn brings forth Armamageddon. And the main reason he ended up like that was because they were having too much fun to remember he was under the dryer]].
* BeYourself: Essentially the crux of the film. Everyone keeps picking on Emmett because his nice-and-sweet personality and interests clash with the post-apocalyptic world they're all playing in, but when he eventually starts to take these jibes on board and tries to change himself, the results are only disastrous.
* BerserkButton: "People putting raisins in stuff!" is what triggers Unikitty's rage mode.
* BewareTheNiceOnes: Everyone looks down at Emmett because he tries to be nice and sweet, even in the post-apocalyptic world, and they want him to be grim and gritty like they are. [[spoiler: They get what they think they want; his "grim and gritty" self is Rex Dangervest, who comes close to destroying the entire LEGO world.]]
* BigBad: Queen Watevra Wa'Nabi, ruler of the Systar System. [[spoiler:Subverted when it turns out all she wants is for the worlds to live in peace. The real Big Bad is Rex Dangervest, who turns out to be an embittered future version of Emmet.]]
* BiggerOnTheInside:
** The house Emmet builds has several rooms that are bigger than its exterior.
** General Mayhem's ship carries more weapons than are possible for its size.
* BlueAndOrangeMorality: [[spoiler:It turns out that the residents of Bricksburg/Apocalypseburg are this to the Sistarians, who don't really understand the tough and gritty facade the former have been putting up and therefore have no idea how to effectively communicate their desire for peace.]]
* BookEnds: After the prologue, the movie follows Emmet on a morning coffee run through Apocalypseburg. At the end of the movie, [[spoiler:Lucy joins Emmet on a morning coffee run through the new world of Syspocalypstar.]] [[spoiler:On a meta level, this ending is also one for [[CallBack Emmet's routine]] from [[WesternAnimation/TheLegoMovie the first movie.]] ]]
* BouquetToss: {{Discussed|Trope}}. [[spoiler:Batman suggests that he throw a Batarang instead of a bouquet at his wedding, and [[BlackComedy whoever it gets lodged into]] is the next to get married.]]
* BreakingOldTrends: [[AccidentalPun "Master Breaking" pun unintended]], this marks LEGO's first theatrical movie to lack a father/son conflict, [[spoiler:a redemption arc for the main villain]], or a "Behind the Bricks" featurette.
* BrickJoke: [[{{Pun}} Technically, every joke in the film qualifies]], but special note goes to:
** President Business leaving to go play golf instead of actually helping deal with the alien threat, and his subsequent return at the end of the film.
** The Man Upstairs asking [[ContinuityNod where his pants are]].
* BroadStrokes: As ''LEGO Batman Movie'' is fully in continuity with ''LEGO Movie'' 1 and 2,[[note]]while ''LEGO Ninjago Movie'' seemingly not at all[[/note]] best guess is that Batman's film occurs between the second or third of the DUPLO's many attacks on Bricksburg. And as his film's plot was still going on when the Justice League departed without him to find the DUPLO, then they would have left soon after Batman had turned up uninvited at their 57th anniversary party. And as the DCEU Aquaman wasn't at the party, then he must have only just become a League member either right after Batman left, or right before the League were about to board their ship.
* BuffySpeak:
** "The Second Part" surely qualifies.
** Queen Watevra tells Sweet Mayhem to do the "bloopity-bloop-bloop". Mayhem repeats the phrase as she enters a passcode to unlock the nearby door.
* ButtMonkey: The Systar System's court jester Banarnar, who's constantly humiliated when he keeps slipping on his peel. The worst possible time for him to do so was during the wedding itself, in front of the entire Systar system.
-->'''Banarnar:''' This is my nightmare! I had a dream about this! Don't look at me!
* CallBack:
** Sweet Mayhem's assessment of Emmet is similar to how "The Man Upstairs" described him.
** Emmet still has "Planty" as a CompanionCube.
** Emmet happily continues his morning routine from last film; he even orders coffee and greets a line going to do their daily tasks.
** Greeting (former) Surfer Dave, and Sherrie and her many cats, is still part of Emmet's morning routine.
** There's an embroidered pillow on the double-decker couch referencing Emmet and Lucy's status as an OfficialCouple.
** Not to the first film but from [[WesternAnimation/TheLegoBatmanMovie his own spinoff]], Batman is still served [[TrademarkFavoriteFood lobster thermidor]], does a guitar riff, and Alfred is still with him. He also mentions some events from that movie, and has the glowing eye lenses and one-sided rivalry with Superman he had there.
** Lucy spins her head 360 degrees while hearing "Catchy Song", similar to how Emmet spins his head as he looks for something to attach the wheel to the kart in the Old West.
** A few scenes use the [[SayingSoundEffectsOutLoud "pew, pew, pew"]] from Batman's film. [[spoiler:Even the Raptors get in on it!]]
** [[spoiler:Finn's dad]] calls out, "Honey! Where are my pants?"
** The residents of the former-Brickburg still speak of human "artifacts" they fear with [[AcCENTUponTheWrongSylLABle emphasis on the wrong syllable]], such as the Bin of [=StoRAJ=] (storage).
** An artifact from the real world is again an object of power in the LEGO world.
** [[spoiler:Now, Lucy]] briefly falls into and observes the real world.
** The FinalBattle involves [[spoiler:Lucy inspiring and rallying the citizens to take on the BigBad, complete with everyone building hodgepodge fighting machines.]]
** Lucy tells [[spoiler:Rex Dangervest]], "You don't have to be the bad guy," which is what Emmet told President Business in the first film.
** Near the end of the first movie President Business got caught in an explosion he caused. This happens to him again at the ending here.
* TheCameo:
** A surprising one from LEGO Creator/BruceWillis. Oddly, although the figure is based on [[Film/DieHard John McClane]], the other characters call him Bruce Willis.
** Dr. Emmett Brown, Bill & Ted, WNBA legend Sheryl Swoopes and ''Ruth Bader Ginsburg'' briefly appear.
** A doll of Unikitty [[WesternAnimation/{{Unikitty}} in the style of her TV series]] [[spoiler:appears in Bianca's room]]. [[https://twitter.com/unikittyplushie This is a plush toy that was made for Unikitty's creator and the film's executive producer, Matthew Ashton.]]
** [[Franchise/ScoobyDoo Velma Dinkley]] appears as one of the Apocalypsburg residents.
** [[Film/TheWizardOfOz Dorothy, Scarecrow, Tin Man, Lion, and Toto]] appear in Harmony Town.
* CanonImmigrant: Unikitty's castle and her brother, Puppycorn, elements that were otherwise exclusive to [[WesternAnimation/{{Unikitty}} her own TV series]] (which was a spinoff that likely [[AlternateContinuity isn't in continuity]] with the movies), show up in this one.
* CaptainMorganPose: Shortly taken by Watevra, who turns humanoid just for it, during "Not Evil", appropriately while tempting Metalbeard with his own Planet-Pirate Ship.
* CarnivoreConfusion: Some of the Systarians are living foods like the walking chocolate bar that looks at a chocolate fountain and laments how fragile life is. At one point Batman asks [[HeartbreakAndIceCream for ice cream to soothe his depression]] and Wa'Nabi's ice cream butler responds that he's not a thing to be used to fill emotional voids. [[spoiler:Trope also taken to a hilarious extreme in the "intermission" pause.]]
* CastingGag: In addition to Emmet, Chris Pratt plays Rex Dangervest, a [[Film/GuardiansOfTheGalaxy2014 galaxy-saving]] [[Film/JurassicWorld raptor trainer]].
* CentralTheme: The differences between how boys and girls play, and once again how we should let others into our fun rather than giving up on our own imagination altogether. [[spoiler:Like Lord Business for the dad in the first film, Rex represents Finn's desire to give up on his imagination altogether when Bianca wanting to make a world where they can play together gets in the way of him telling his own complex time travel story. In the finale, the parts of him represented by Wyldstyle make him realize he can enjoy building and playing with her too, and he makes peace with Bianca by recreating the heart/Queen Watevra Wa'Nabi that had inspired her interest in Franchise/{{Lego}}s in the first place, ending with the two playing together at last. Rex similarly fades from existence, happy that Finn won't give up on the part of his imagination that believes anything and anyone can be special that Emmet had represented for him, after all.]]
** The other major theme, related in a number of ways to the above, is what it means to grow up and become more mature. [[spoiler:In many ways, it's shown that responding to the problems in life by becoming more cynical and rejecting positivity is effectively the easy way out, and NOT a mature way of dealing with it. Emmett's increasing "toughness" (which ultimately is what would turn him into Rex), representing Finn's attitude, ultimately makes things worse and shows he hasn't achieved actual maturity at all. The resolution shows that true maturity requires a balance of both cynicism and idealism; acknowledging the problems life has but nonetheless doing what you can to make things better.]]
* CharacterDevelopment: Thanks to Rex's teachings, Emmet gradually learns anger and becomes "tougher" over the course of the movie...[[spoiler:and then [[SubvertedTrope subverted]] when Emmet's character development actually makes everything ''worse'', because he ends up ruining everything. In order to make things right, Emmet has to develop his character in a ''different'' direction -- yes, he has to realize that everything is not awesome, but he also has to "open his heart" enough to be willing to try to ''make'' things awesome, and therefore not become Rex]].
* ChekhovsGag: Emmet having built many toasters in his house proves important later, when [[spoiler:he, Lucy, and Rex build a toaster to launch themselves out of a brick-melting pit]].
* ChekhovsGun:
** The heart Emmet gave as a peace-offering to the DUPLO aliens [[spoiler:became Queen Watevra Wa'Nabi. It was also what Finn made for Bianca 5 years ago which got her interested in LEGO and started the events of the movie.]]
** The eject seat button on Rex's ship seems to be playing off the '''''[[TotallyRadical EXTREME]]''''' nature of Rex Dangervest, [[spoiler:but it later comes back as a means to launch Emmet under the dryer in order to complete his transformation into [[FutureMeScaresMe Rex himself]]]].
** The heart bomb Lucy steals while inside General Mayhem's ship is later used in an attempt to destroy the Space Palace's Entertainment Center. [[spoiler:Instead, General Mayhem deflects the bomb, triggering an explosion that blows away the general's helmet, revealing her real face to Lucy.]]
* CivilizedAnimal: Rex's raptors... now put-upon workers.
-->'''Raptor:''' ''[subtitle translation]'' I hate Mondays.
* TheComicallySerious: In one of the first scenes of the movie, Lucy watches over a destroyed Bricksburg and delivers an ominous monologue about the alien invasion... [[MoodWhiplash only to be interrupted]] by Emmet, who's [[ThePollyanna still as cheerful as ever]].
* ComingOfAgeStory: In a way. "Growing up" is a recurring theme in the narrative, with a lot of Emmet's personal conflict having to do with still being upbeat in a world where everyone is telling him to change his tune and "get with the times". [[spoiler:As Emmet, Wyldstyle and the rest are arguably Finn's {{Author Avatar}}s, it reflects his own struggles with growing up now that he's a teenager. There's also a point to be made that the film deals with ''how'' to grow up, with Rex representing the easy, angsty, and cynical method that helps no one but yourself -- "don't let anyone else play with you, even if that means breaking everything, putting all your toys into storage, and giving up on your imagination" -- as opposed to the much harder route of being aware that life has letdowns and compromises with others, but rolling with the punches and persevering through it to find the fun you can have by including people other than just yourself, as detailed in the Everything's Not Awesome song.]]
* CorruptTheCutie: Rare male example. [[spoiler:Near the end of the movie, it turns out that the reason why [[EvilAllAlong Rex]] was trying to make Emmet more tough and hardened was because he was trying to turn Emmet into him. When it turns out that simply mentoring Emmet doesn't work, he puts him under the dryer in a desperate attempt to emotionally break him. In fact, Rex himself is an example -- he ''used to be'' Emmet, but after being forgotten under the dryer for a really long time, he eventually decided to completely change his image from the nice and cheerful Emmet to the tough and cynical Rex]].
* CrapsackWorld: What Bricksburg has become after the DUPLO alien invasion.
* CrowdSong: When an [[StepfordSuburbia entire neighborhood]] starts breaking into "Catchy Song" in complete unison, Emmet and Rex make a break for it.
* DarkerAndEdgier: {{Parodied|Trope}}. Bricksburg has become a ''Mad Max''-like wasteland where almost everyone has a grungy, battle-tired aesthetic... except Emmet, who looks and acts almost exactly the same as in the last film, bar some new scratches on his uniform's shiny stripes. And the town's citizens ''deliberately'' chose the wasteland look in order to fend off the Duplo aliens. [[spoiler:The reason for this of course is that Finn is now a teenager and is trying to create a more "mature" narrative with his LEGO sets based on the movies meant for older audiences he's become familiar with in the years since the first film.]]
* DarkestHour: [[spoiler:After tricking Emmet into triggering Armamageddon, causing all of both worlds to be banished to the Bin of Storajj, Rex Dangervest traps Emmet in Undar of the Dryar System. The movie almost ends there.]]
* DarkReprise:
** "Everything's Not Awesome". It starts off as being completely opposite to the last film's "Everything Is Awesome" [[spoiler:but ultimately is {{subverted}} thanks to Wyldstyle/Lucy finding a happy medium between the two, stating the CentralTheme that even if in reality things aren't always awesome, we can still make them better, together]].
** An ominous chanted version of "Catchy Song" is heard when Emmet, Lucy and Rex infiltrate the Systar System's cake factory.
* DecoyProtagonist: [[spoiler:Emmet actually spends this movie playing TheDragon to the real BigBad, Rex Dangervest, with Lucy/Wyldstyle being the one who brings about Finn's own HeelFaceTurn and finally overcomes the negative OpinionMyopia elements of his imagination that Rex represents InUniverse.]]
* DemotedToExtra:
** President Business only appears at the beginning and end of the film due to leaving Bricksburg to go golfing during the DUPLO Invasion. In the human world, The Man Upstairs is only heard offscreen while leaving it to his wife to sort out their children's situation, with his only physical appearance being through reused footage from the first film.
** Good Cop/Bad Cop (now referred to by Emmet as "Scribble Cop") only appears when Emmet walks home from getting coffee.
** Vitruvius is [[DroppedABridgeOnHim thrown aside by Metalbeard during the invasion and is not seen or even mentioned again]].
* DepartmentOfRedundancyDepartment:
** ''The LEGO Movie 2''[='=]s subtitle is "''The Second Part''".
** "I'm tracking unusual activity on my unusual activity tracker."
* DespairEventHorizon: Rex Dangervest in his backstory crossed it when he was marooned under the dryer, when he waited for a rescue that never came, and he realized that he couldn't count on anyone else. [[spoiler:The experience changed him from the happy, kind Emmet into the gritty tough Rex, and after initiating Armamageddon, he fully intends to subject Emmet to the same fate to ensure that he turns into Rex. Emmet teeters on the brink before Lucy rescues him.]]
* DisneyAcidSequence: Both of Queen Watevra's musical numbers qualify as this, in a way that pays homage to this trope.
* DisproportionateRetribution:
** [[spoiler:Rex, as past-Emmet, was abandoned under the dryer by his friends in an alternate timeline. So his response is to hatch a convoluted plan to trick his past self into causing Armamageddon, which would put ''the entire LEGO universe'' into storage despite only a few characters being responsible for his abandonment.]]
** [[spoiler:Emmet destroying the temple is a representation of Finn in the real world responding to his sister taking his toys without asking by ''wrecking Bianca's Systar System'', even though he could have just stolen his toys back or just asked Bianca to give them back or just explained to her why taking his stuff without asking is wrong.]] This is likely the point of the movie as showing why this sort of "tough" acting is wrong, especially since [[spoiler:it causes everyone to be banished to the Bin of Storaj because Finn and Bianca's mom has had enough of their fighting.]]
* DistantReactionShot: [[spoiler:After Rex is baited into punching a Heart Bomb, the moment his fist makes contact]] we cut to a distant shot, where all we get is a flash of light and a muffled thump.
* DistinctionWithoutADifference: [[spoiler:When Batman eventually agrees to marry Queen Watevra,]] she asks him if he wants them to have [[spoiler:the wedding]] in 15 minutes. He suggests that they have it in a quarter of an hour.
* DisturbedDoves: {{Discussed|Trope}}. [[spoiler:Queen Watevra suggests releasing bats instead of doves at her wedding.]]
* DivineConflict: [[spoiler:For all intents and purposes, the entire film is one, as the conflict between the Apocalypseburgers and the Systarians is caused by the gods of their respective worlds (Finn and Bianca respectively) being unable to get along and getting into fights.]]
* DownerBeginning: The DUPLO aliens trashed the LEGO world and turned it into a wasteland.
* DownerEnding: [[spoiler:Emmet causes Armamageddon by destroying Queen Watevra and Batman's wedding, the Apocalypseburgers and Systarians are sucked up into the Bin of Storaj, and Rex Dangervest -- revealed as an evil Emmet from an alternate future -- banishes present Emmet to Undar of the Dryar so he'll become like Rex. The End. Subverted when Lucy speaks up and refuses to let it end that way, ultimately defying this trope.]]
* DramaticGasp: Emmet does a hilariously long one when he discovers that [[spoiler:Lucy was one of the singers in "Everything is Awesome".]]
* EarWorm: The not-so-subtly titled [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q_HFm54lb04 "Catchy Song"]], which largely consists of the phrase [[LampshadeHanging "This song's gonna get stuck inside your head,"]] is this movie's answer to "Everything Is Awesome". The title really says it all. As Unikitty's listening to it, an ''actual cartoon worm'' appears singing in her brain.
-->''Cause it's so catchy, catchy, it's such a catchy song\
Gonna make you happy, happy, don't try to fight it, sing along!''
* EarlyBirdCameo: The Fox Costume Girl from the ''Toys/LEGOMinifigures'' line cameos in the film before Series 19 was released later the same year.
* EatTheCamera:
** In the film's prologue, one of the DUPLO aliens puts its mouth in front of the camera before cutting to the title.
** Also done by Emmet in the last scene as he emits a DramaticGasp upon learning [[spoiler:Lucy was one of the singers for "Everything is Awesome" as he sees her band's cover for such.]]
* TheElitesJumpShip: President Business leaves to play golf during the alien invasion at the beginning of the film.
* EnclosedExtraterrestrials: Sweet Mayhem, who's always wearing a spacesuit.
* TheEndOfTheWorldAsWeKnowIt: [[spoiler:Armamageddon. Finn and Bianca's mother, tired of their constant fighting, orders them to put away their toys.]] This is represented as an apocalypse greater than anything Apocalypseburg has seen, with everyone from both there and the Systar System being sucked up into dark voids [[spoiler:(Finn and Bianca's toy boxes)]], never to be seen again. [[spoiler:Until Finn and Bianca make up and finish the story together.]]
* EnlightenmentSuperpowers: Just like Emmet's brief time in the real world made him a Master Builder, [[spoiler:Lucy's real-world moment affected her as well. When she enters Undar she transforms the real world environment to LEGO, giving everyone full movement.]]
* EverybodyCries: [[spoiler:All of the participants of the wedding cry when Emmet smashes the altar, effectively kickstarting Armamageddon.]]
* EvilAllAlong: Parodied and then DoubleSubverted. [[spoiler:Queen Watevra is so ObviouslyEvil that the protagonists even lampshade it and tell her during her VillainSong -- appropriately titled [[MostDefinitelyNotAVillain "Not Evil"]] -- that she's acting suspicious... except she's actually telling the truth. She's ''not'' evil. Instead, it's Rex Dangervest who's revealed to be the true BigBad of the film.]]
* EvilLaugh: Queen Watevra starts one just after boasting that her plans for the Apocalypseburgers is succeeding, then instantly subverted as she's actually laughing at Banarnar's repeated pratfalls.
* ExorcistHead: During the OrbitalShot at the start of "Catchy Song", Wyldstyle's head rotates on her shoulders to keep her face in front of the camera. Easier to do when you're a minifig, apparently.
* ExtremelyShortTimespan: Not counting the prologue or the five-year TimeSkip, the events of the film take place in one day.
* FakeOutFadeOut: [[spoiler:The movie seems to end in tragedy, with Emmet having caused Armamageddon and his hard and embittered future self Rex stranding him on Undar of the Dryar, while everyone else is trapped inside the Bin of Storaj and starts singing a depressing song of giving up. We even get a "The End" title card, so all is lost -- ''but'' Lucy still manages to find a way to inspire everyone, and the movie continues from there. The same "The End" title card would later be used when the film ends for real.]] Some theaters aided in this fake out by turning on the lights while it happens, usually the signal that the movie is over. When it's revealed to be a fake-out, though, the lights go back down as the movie continues to play.
* TheFarmerAndTheViper: During the first stage of the Duplo Invasion, Emmet built a LEGO heart that he gave to the Duplo aliens as a peace-offering...only to have them smash it, swallow the pieces, and then start destroying the city. [[spoiler:Turns out that the aliens actually ''were'' trying to make peace [[BlueAndOrangeMorality in the only way they knew how]], because Bianca thought a game based on breaking things was the only one Finn would enjoy.]]
* FiveSecondForeshadowing:
** Queen Watevra Wa'Nabi offers Batman [[spoiler:half of everything. Soon after, she reveals that the wedding she invited everyone to is between her and Batman.]]
** After going over the plan with Emmet and Lucy to crash the wedding between Queen Watevra Wa'Nabi and [[spoiler:Batman, Rex Dangervest takes the invisible jet from Wonder Woman, who realizes that she left her Lasso of Truth in the seat. A few scenes later, it's revealed that the Systar System is [[GoodAllAlong not evil at all]] and that Rex Dangervest is the true BigBad who intends to make Armamageddon into a reality. It is then that Rex reveals himself to be an [[FutureMeScaresMe embittered Emmet from the future]]]].
* {{Flanderization}}: Lampshaded with Benny, who asks Queen Watevra Wa'Nabi how she knew he loved spaceships when they meet for the first time, only to immediately follow it up by proudly boasting "Loving spaceships is my one defining trait!"
* FluffyDryCat: A brief gag at the Sparkle Spa has Unikitty's "fur" poof up under one of the hairdryers.
* {{Foil}}: [[spoiler:Queen Watevra Wa'Nabi and Rex Dangervest are this to one another. Both are largely driven by loneliness, but Watevra finds genuine love and companionship with Batman while Rex tries to destroy the universe out of revenge for his. Watevra is ObviouslyEvil, but actually a sweetheart who is completely genuine with what she's telling the heroes, while Rex appears to be an ActionHero on the surface but is actually a hateful, vengeful OmnicidalManiac. Watevra's true form is a heart while Rex is a dark and gritty NinetiesAntiHero. Both are charismatic, but Watevra uses her charisma to convey her sincere intent to help, while Rex uses his to manipulate everyone. Watevra is ''incredibly'' generous and only wants peace, while Rex's ultimate goal is incredibly selfish revenge and he intentionally foments conflict between the kids controlling their world. Many of the things that Watevra states (sincerely) ''don't'' apply to her in her VillainSong describe Rex perfectly. On top of everything, Rex is the personification of the conflict between Finn and his sister Bianca, while Watevra personifies the love they have for each other and their ability to reconcile.]]
* FollowTheBouncingBall: The HD home media releases include the option to watch the movie in an "Everything is Awesome Sing-Along".
* {{Foreshadowing}}: Enough to have [[Foreshadowing/TheLegoMovie2TheSecondPart a dedicated subpage]].
* AFormYouAreComfortableWith: Queen Watevra offers to change her form to something the Apocalypseburg citizens find more comfortable after first introducing herself to them as a horse. [[SubvertedTrope The multi-eyed tentacled monstrosity she changes into, however, doesn't really have the desired effect.]]
* FreezeFrameBonus: During the tour of the ''Rexcelsior'''s interior, a weather forecast can be seen on one of the screens behind a raptor. However, since they're currently in space, [[SpaceIsCold the only temperature for the entire week is -270 degrees.]]
* FurryReminder: One of the Fabuland dog figures [[spoiler:who are working on the wedding cake]] slides around on his butt [[spoiler:like dogs often do when their butts are irritated]].
* FutureSelfReveal: [[spoiler:Rex is revealed to be a future version of Emmet who was left under the washing machine and became bitter because he was left behind by all his friends. Some clues before this reveal were Emmet and Rex's BlackBeadEyes (most of the other characters have the modern LEGO eyes with smaller white dots) and the fact that both are voiced by Creator/ChrisPratt.]]
* GainingConfidenceSong: When everybody [[spoiler:gets stuck in the Bin of Storage to seemingly waste away for eternity]], they all begin singing "Everything's Not Awesome," a slow, depressing DarkReprise of the franchise's theme song. However, Lucy realizes midway through that things are not "hopeless and bleak." Once they all realize what she's saying, everybody becomes more hopeful and sings about sticking together even when times aren't awesome, motivating them to try and escape.
* GiantSpider: A real-life spider crawls over Emmet while he's stuck Undar of the Dryar. Of course it's tiny, but compared to a LEGO minifig it's huge, and freaks him out a bit.
* GoMadFromTheRevelation: Implied to be part of what turned [[spoiler:Rex Dangervest]] to villainy, after fully realizing and internalizing the truth of their existence as metaphors for Finn's feelings.
* GoneHorriblyRight: Lucy tells Emmet that times have changed, that being soft and silly isn't cool anymore, and he must be "tough and battle ready." Emmet decides to do so. [[spoiler:Lucy trying to convince Emmet that it's okay and she prefers him to be the soft, silly, gentle guy she cares about only reinforces the idea that she's been brainwashed, since Emmet can't believe that Lucy would ever willingly say such a thing. It also turned out that a gritty, tough, and hardened Emmet would turn out to be Rex Dangervest, who doesn't care about his friends or the rest of the universe.]]
* GoodAllAlong: [[spoiler:Sweet Mayhem and Queen Watevra Wa'Nabi. They just want peace between the Systar System and Apocalypseburg.]]
* GoshDangItToHeck:
** Lucy describes Apocalypseburg as "a heckish place to live".
** Emmet comments on his interruption of Lucy's brooding with an "Oh my goshness."
** "Welcome to heck." Said by Rex once he and Emmet arrive in Harmony Town.
* GreyAndGrayMorality: The central conflict turns out to be this, because PoorCommunicationKills. [[spoiler:The citizens of the Systar System spent years attacking Bricksburg and re-destroying everything they tried to rebuild, and only just now have they shown interest in peaceful co-existence, so the Bricksburg/Apocalypseburg residents have perfect reason to be suspicious. As for Rex, he went through a brutal BreakTheCutie and is trying to SetRightWhatOnceWentWrong, and before he goes off the MoralEventHorizon he could be classified as a WellIntentionedExtremist. In terms of the human storyline, Bianca regularly wrecked Finn's playsets as a kid, so he has good reason to have pushed her away and refuse to play with her, but now Bianca has grown up and really does want to play peacefully with Finn if he would just give her a chance.]]
* GrowingUpSucks: The theme of this movie is exploring what it really means to mature as a person, and deconstructing how[[invoked]] TrueArtIsAngsty is a narrow-minded view to hold. In its own way, going DarkerAndEdgier just for the sake of it is just as childish as being LighterAndSofter, if not moreso -- true maturity and growth is more complicated than that.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Tropes H to M]]
* HaHaHaNo: A variation.
-->'''Emmet:''' You destroyed my ship!\
'''Rex:''' Kid, you can build anything, but there ain't nothing you can't break! ''[starts laughing]''\
'''Emmet:''' ''[laughs along, then stops]'' I don't get it.
* HappyEndingOverride:
** Any chance ''The LEGO Movie'' set up of Emmet befriending President Business gets dashed when the president ditches Bricksburg during the Duplo Aliens' invasion.
** Whatever happened with Batman at the end of his solo adventure, he's back to only having Alfred around, with his tearful dialogue suggesting his ShipTease with Barbara Gordon [[ShipSinking sunk]].
* HatedItemMakeover: [[spoiler:Finn is angry about Bianca taking his minifigs and changing their appearance without his permission, and he goes as far as to say she ruined them.]]
* HeadsUpDisplay: The inside of Sweet Mayhem's helmet displays various information, including a quick personality assessment of any character she is scanning.
* HeartbreakAndIceCream: Discussed in "Everything's Not Awesome".
-->'''Batman:''' Love's not real, I just wanna eat carbs, pass the ice cream.\
'''Ice Cream Cone:''' I am not a ''thing'' you can just use to fill emotional voids with.
* HeelRealization: [[spoiler:Finn finds the broken remains of Queen Watevra/the heart he built Bianca in the storage bin,]] and the look on his face all but says MyGodWhatHaveIDone.
* HoistByHisOwnPetard: When the Master Builders fire a missile at Sweet Mayhem's ship, the machine just takes the missile and fires it back at them.
* HyperspaceIsAScaryPlace: Passage through the Stairgate is a harrowing experience. First things are warped dramatically, then, if one can make it through the glassteroid field, there is further warping that makes things a [[ArtShift shifting coloring book scribble]] interspersed with psychedelic visions of the real world.
* {{Hypocrite}}: This is part of the villain's motivation. [[spoiler: But it's more what he views as other people's hypocrisy rather than his own. After his friends spent so much time being chiding him for being optimistic and trying to have fun in the post-apocalyptic world when they were all being grim and gritty, Emmett was embittered by the fact that they abandoned him to the Dryar System and forgot about him because they were having too much fun in the Systar System. After spending an eternity with their jibes about him echoing in his head, he [[BeCarefulWhatYouWishFor decided to give them what they'd spend so long demanding he should be]], and Rex Dangervest is the result.]]
* IComeInPeace: The {{Tagline}} notwithstanding (see below), they really do. Their approach just... needs work.
* IKnowYouKnowIKnow: The fight between Sweet Mayhem and Lucy has them talking about how they expected each other's expectations. This eventually confuses Lucy.
-->'''Lucy:''' Wait, now I'm lost.
* ImagineSpot: When Emmet's plan to destroy the temple hits a snag, Rex reassures Emmet by telling him to "visualize your success", which will give him the confidence to pull it off. So Emmet imagines himself destroying the temple, spontaneously snapping his brainwashed friends out of their trance and causing his friends to praise him for his success. [[spoiler:He does succeed in destroying the temple with a single ground pound -- but unlike his fantasy, his friends don't praise him, first because they weren't actually brainwashed, and second because destroying the temple causes Armamageddon.]]
* ImColdSoCold: One of the star projectiles apparently invokes this to get Emmet to free it from the fortified gate and let Sweet Mayhem in.
* IMeantToDoThat: As Emmet and Rex take a Rexplorer dropship to the Systarian Jungle, Emmet trips on the landing ramp but tries to brush it off by saying "Planned that". One of Rex's raptors bluntly doubts his claim.
* ImmediateSequel: Zigzagged. The opening scene starts off by recreating and continuing the SequelHook from the first movie where the DUPLO aliens arrive in Bricksburg. Then we get a five-year TimeSkip into the events of the movie proper, much like last time.
* InTouchWithHisFeminineSide: Emmet actually gets mocked and chided for this, since being warm and peppy and building an adorable cottage clashes with the general feel of Apocalpyseburg. He then decides to try to shed this part of his personality and become tougher and grittier. [[spoiler:As things go on, this turns out to be a big mistake.]]
* InvoluntaryDance:
** During the first "Catchy Song", Emmett is starting to get caught up by the music.
--->'''Emmett:''' My body is ''worming''! I didn't know I knew how to do this...
** Batman too can't help dancing despite claiming the song has zero effect on him.
* IResembleThatRemark: Emmet comments on Lucy's obvious displeasure about his choice in music.
-->'''Emmet:''' Heh heh, that song really seems to upset you.\
''[Lucy [[AGlassInTheHand crushes her coffee cup in her grip]]]''\
'''Lucy:''' No it ''doesn't!''
* IronicEcho:
** Lucy tries teaching Emmet to be tough and brooding by repeatedly saying, "War hardens the heart," which Emmet can't really pull off. [[spoiler:Near the end, when Rex traps him in Undar of the Dryar, Emmet says it to himself in exactly the way Lucy wanted him to.]]
** "You started it." Used at first in a way that seems to mean "You started the fight, not us!" by the Systar inhabitants to the inhabitants of Apocalypseburg. [[spoiler:Later revealed that since the Queen of the Systar System is the heart that Emmet gave the DUPLO aliens on the first day of the invasion (the one Finn gave his younger sister on the first day they played together), the Apocalypseburg members (and by extension Finn) started the Systar System.]]
--->'''General Mayhem:''' [[spoiler:You started it. You started ''everything.'']]
** Rex's true backstory reveals [[spoiler:that during the years when he, ''Emmet'', was trapped and helpless with no hope of rescue, all the criticism and mockery that everyone in Apocalypseburg had heaped on him, echoed endlessly in his thoughts and added fuel to his anger. So he made himself into what they all said he should be, and used it to inflict retribution on all the LEGO world.]]
* JinxGame: When Batman and Queen Watevra Wa-Nabi make preparations for the wedding, the two of them discuss how alone they felt until they agreed to get married. When the two of them say "to find true happiness" in unison, they begin to affectionately jinx each other, but Ice Cream Cone, who's [[SickeninglySweethearts annoyed with their flirting]], forces them to stop.
* KarmaHoudiniWarranty: President Business, who was rather EasilyForgiven for his actions in the previous film, callously abandons everyone to the mercy of The Duplo Aliens. When he returns at the end, he gets his hair set on fire and runs into a store full of fireworks, which causes him to get thrown into the sky.
* LandfillBeyondTheStars: The planet DUPLO is covered in piles of LEGO bricks stolen from Bricksburg that the DUPLO aliens sort and bring to Watevra Wa'Nabi's temple.
* LateArrivalSpoiler:
** Wyldstyle's real name is Lucy, the LEGO world is a kid's imagination of his family's playspace, and there was an alien invasion by aliens based on the DUPLO.
** Starting with the April 2019 release of the Shimmer & Shine Sparkle Spa, [[spoiler:every Lucy minifigure included in a ''LEGO Movie 2'' set has blue hair, confirming that her hair color reverts from black to blue.]]
** The August 2019 wave of ''LEGO Movie 2'' sets includes one based on the climax, [[spoiler:with Lucy and Sweet Mayhem co-piloting their Wyld-Mayhem Star Fighter en route to save Emmet from Rex, whose evil side the box makes especially obvious by showing him shooting at Lucy]]; it also marks the first set to show Sweet Mayhem's real face on the front of the box. Another set in the wave takes inspiration from the final musical sequence, "Super Cool", [[spoiler:with two Sparkle Babies playing with a star-shaped projectile, and Lucy handing Emmet a first-edition recording of "Everything is Awesome", showing her on the cover]].
* LeaningOnTheFourthWall: Finn and Bianca's mom comments "I'm not the bad guy in this story, I'm just an amusing side character." It serves as both a cute way to say she's just trying to make her kids stop fighting, and a direct reference to her being an amusing Creator/MayaRudolph cameo rather than the film's BigBad.
* TheLittleDetecto: Rex has a couple of [[LampshadeHanging pretty specifically-named]] devices for use during adventures. One is an ''[[ThingOMeter Unusual Activity Meter]]'' that has a readout that says [[DontAskJustRun "RUN!"]], and another is a ''Convenient Plot Device'' that can detect planets underneath him.
* LongSongShortScene: Except for "Gotham City Guys" and the credits songs, every song sounds longer on the soundtrack than in the movie. Some notable trims made for the film:
** "Welcome to the Systar System" lost everything aside from the TitleDrop. Rough animation for the full song made it into the bonus features, revealing that the stars would have sung the cut portion in response to some Lucy/Batman banter ultimately moved to "Not Evil".
** "5:15" and "Everything's Not Awesome" lost their endings, to flow into the dialogue.
** "Not Evil" lost another chorus and a bridge, the latter of which would've sounded inconsistent with later events.[[note]]Had "Not Evil" kept its bridge in the movie, "Gotham City Guys" would've likely negated the lines, "I never lie/And that wasn't a lie/When I said just now/That I never lie/'Cause I never lie".[[/note]]
** "Super Cool" actually runs shorter on the soundtrack, which edits out the Lonely Island singing about the credited names (which listeners can't see if they play the song separate from the credits).
* MaybeMagicMaybeMundane: Maintained from the first film, albeit now more ambiguous.
** The climax is triggered by Finn hearing the muffled "This song's gonna get stuck inside your head" refrain from the Everything's Not Awesome song. Whether he's actually hearing the characters singing, or it's just Bianca's music player [[spoiler:in the storage bin]], is never made clear though.
** Rex's backstory involves him [[spoiler:becoming animate in the real world, changing his appearance, building his ship and time-traveling into the past to save Emmet, which includes a shot of the Rexcelsor model appearing out of thin air for Finn to find it, but in Emmet's visions of the real world, Finn mentions setting up a time-travel plotline with the toys already and seems to have prepared Rex's ship himself. Rex mentioning Rex and Emmet's fight with limited movement in the real world being nothing but a metaphor for the death of Finn's imagination, and the area becoming a brick-built part of the LEGO world when Lucy intervenes after, makes things even less clear]].
** [[spoiler:Like with Emmet in the last film, Lucy becomes conscious but inanimate in the real world after the temple is destroyed, but unlike the last movie, she isn’t able to signal her living nature to Bianca before she disposes of the minifigure in her bin.]]
* MeaningfulGift: Lucy surprises Emmet with not one, but three gifts in the film's epilogue to show him how much she loves him. [[spoiler:Not only did she rebuild the house he made (which got destroyed earlier in the film), but she also recovered [[CompanionCube Planty]] for him and gave him an original album of his favorite song, "Everything is Awesome!", with none other than Lucy herself on the cover.]]
* MeaningfulName:
** Sweet Mayhem is an alien invader who hails from the Systar System... as in, [[spoiler:Finn's ''sister'' is invading his LEGO play with Mini-Dolls and DUPLO]].
** Watevra Wa'Nabi, which sounds remarkably similar to "whatever I wanna be" -- fitting for a VoluntaryShapeshifter.
** Rex Dangervest is a reckless, thrill-seeking adventurer who's the {{Foil}} to Emmet, who always wears a ''safety'' vest. [[spoiler:Doubles as a MeaningfulRename, as he's Emmet's tough, embittered future self.]]
** The Dryar System is a place to be forgotten -- under the dryer in the basement.
** Armamegeddon, when spoken in the film, sounds an awful lot like our-mom-ageddon. [[spoiler: Which makes sense when it turns out the event in question is when the mother of the kids playing with the Lego makes them put it away into storage.]]
* MockHollywoodSign: The Bricksburg sign (styled as the Hollywood sign) has been ripped apart during the apocalypse. It now says "Icksburg", though the city is now "Apocalypseburg".
* MostDefinitelyNotAVillain: Parodied. Watevra Wa'Nabi blatantly sings an entire song (with one of the lyrics even being "I'm so not a villain!") about how she's not evil and not tricking everyone into trusting her. Lucy doesn't buy it, [[spoiler:but it's [[SubvertedTrope subverted]] when it turns out [[GoodAllAlong Watevra was telling the truth the entire time]]!]]
-->'''General Mayhem:''' The Queen sang a whole song about how not-evil she was!\
'''Lucy:''' ''[[spoiler:That was [[LampshadeHanging the truth?!]]]]''
* MuggedForDisguise: Lucy knocks out one of the Queen's Royal Guards and (somehow) [[DressingAsTheEnemy dons the Guard's armor.]] The Guard is almost twice her size, so the result is Lucy waddling along in a brick-built suit with her face completely exposed.
* MusicalEpisode: While the previous LEGO theatrical films had a few original songs, this film features several full-blown musical numbers involving most of the cast. In the Systar System, where most of the film takes place, bursting into song is apparently the norm. (Justified, since it's now taking place partially in a little girl's imagination instead of a boy's.)
* MusicalNod: Batman's verse in "Gotham City Guys" samples the theme from the 1989 movie.
* MusicalNumberAnnoyance: Both Wyldstyle and Batman have annoyed reactions when they hear the first few bars of Queen Watevra Wa'Nabi's musical numbers.
-->'''Wyldstyle:''' Oh, no, are we in a musical?\
'''Batman:''' Yup, get ready.\
''[later]''\
'''Batman:''' Oh, great, more singing, right on time.
* MusicalWorldHypotheses: The Systar System operates under the Alternate World hypothesis. Lucy is annoyed when she realizes this, [[spoiler:though eventually she and everyone else joins in with the singing]].
* MyFriendsAndZoidberg: Inverted, when Emmet plans to rescue Lucy and everyone else from Sweet Mayhem.
* MyGodWhatHaveIDone:
** Emmet has this after [[spoiler:he destroys the wedding temple and interrupting Batman and Watevra Wa'Nabi, which causes all the Systarians, including his friends Benny, Unikitty and Metalbeard, to cry.]]
--->'''Emmet:''' [[JerkassRealization What's happening?]] [[MyGodWhatHaveIDone What did I just do?!]]
** Emmet is later horrified upon discovering that [[spoiler:Rex had been manipulating him in to enacting Armamageddon and banishing his friends and everyone else to the Bin of Storaj.]]
--->'''Emmet:''' [[spoiler:You tricked me into hurting my friends?]]
** Lucy has one too, [[spoiler: Her face of horror after Emmet destroys the temple, because of her wish of seeing him as a tough person, lead to horrible consequences.]]
* MythologyGag:
** Adding to the fan's dislike for DUPLO placing DUPLO aliens as antagonists, it also turns out that the controversial girl-oriented Mini-Doll figures from the LEGO Friends series are also part of the enemy. [[spoiler:Except they're not the enemy, just really bad at communicating.]]
** In the ImagineSpot showing the team of spaceship builders that Queen Watevra promises to Benny, their planet happens to be yellow with a ship leaving a red trail before it for a split-second, making it looks exactly like the logo seen everywhere on the vintage LEGO Spacemen.
** When Rex, and later Emmet, [[spoiler:become animate in the real world, their movements (and also Rex's interactions with real-world objects) are like primitive, stop-motion animation found on LEGO videos created by fans of the feature films.]]

* NeglectfulPrecursors: [[spoiler:With Watevra Wa'Nabi being created accidentally by Emmet, the residents of Bricksburg turn out to be this way towards the Systarians. The Bricksburgers -- and, later, Apocalypseburgers -- are very much opposed to Watevra's attempts of forging an alliance with them.]]
* NiceJobBreakingItHero: A couple of cases:
** When the DUPLO aliens eat [[spoiler: Queen Watevra Wa'Nabi in her original form]] and demand more, Lucy makes a hammer and hits them, causing the Duplo war and she's not told this until the end.
** Lucy points out that Sweet Mayhem appears to know all their moves as she attacks them during a chase, but it's because Emmet is using turn signals.
** [[spoiler:Armamageddon coming about does this on several levels. On the surface it literally has Emmet break the temple, causing Armamageddon. However, he ended up in that position as he was trying to get tougher, because all his friends and neighbors had been telling him he needed to, and it was ''because'' of Lucy's normal hardened persona that Rex was able to convince Emmet that she was brainwashed; as a result, when she realizes the truth, Emmet doesn't believe her, or the others who Lucy had previously told him were brainwashed themselves.]]
* NiceJobFixingItVillain: If [[spoiler:Rex never went back to taunt Emmet, Emmet would turn into him and he would be able to cause Armamageddon by doing something else. Also, by acting like a complete {{Jerkass}} to Emmet, he just gave Emmet a reason ''not'' to turn into him.]]
* NoFourthWall: Both in and out of universe.
** Pretty much all the LEGO figures are aware they are in a movie. In the beginning, they mention that Batman was off doing a "standalone feature", in reference to [[WesternAnimation/TheLEGOBatmanMovie his spinoff film]]. One character says that "Marvel won't return our calls" in reference to the fact that only DC characters appear, since Marvel was owned by rival studio Disney. Also, when the ToBeContinuedRightNow screen comes up, Lucy interrupts saying that the film should not end on a cliffhanger. The stylised "THE END" LEGO build used for that scene even gets shattered.
** In the finale [[spoiler:Rex / jaded future-Emmet]] also notes in-universe that a fight between them and Emmet isn't even really happening, and instead is just a metaphorical representation of the death of imagination in an adolescent boy's mind.
* NonStandardCharacterDesign:
** Sweet Mayhem is a ''LEGO Friends'' Mini-Doll, and has noticeably less articulation than the other main cast members.
** This also applies to brick-built characters like Ice Cream Cone, Banarnar, and the shape-shifting Queen Watevra Wa'Nabi. In general, the Systar System's inhabitants represent a much wider variety of character types than the characters in the first movie, most of whom were ordinary minifigures.
* NoSell: When Batman fires missiles at Sweet Mayhem's ship, the missiles just keep bouncing off.
* NotAlwaysEvil: It turns out that [[spoiler:the Duplo aliens, General Mayhem, Queen Watevra, and every other member of the Systar system were actually just trying to become friends with the Bricksburg citizens. Watevra's SuspiciouslySpecificDenial about not being evil is ''genuine,'' and her wedding to Batman is an effort to ''prevent'' Armamageddon, not bring it on]].
* NotBrainwashed: [[spoiler:Initially, the treatment of the Master Builders of exposing them to pop music, giving them massages, etc is built up as the Systar System brainwashing them. Same goes for those who lived in the StepfordSuburbia. But nope. Turns out they were genuinely enjoying themselves. [[PoorCommunicationKills The Systarians just suck at articulating their intentions]].]]
* NoClearLeader: When Sweet Mayhem demands to see Apocalypseburg's fiercest leader, Batman claims it's him before the rest of Emmet's friends fight over who it should be. Emmet claims that after everyone became the Special, they should be considered leaders in their own right. However, Mayhem isn't convinced Emmet is the real leader, as her heads-up display tells her he's unqualified to be one, with Wyldstyle trying to jump to his defense.
* OddlyNamedSequel2ElectricBoogaloo: As far as subtitles go, "The Second Part" is... out there.
* OhCrap: Emmet imagines that when he stops the wedding, everyone will snap out of brainwashing and thank him as seen in his ImagineSpot. [[spoiler:Instead, the moment after he has used his Breaker Punch on the wedding cake altar, there is a horrified second of silence and then most everyone in the vicinity starts bawling loudly with OcularGushers, and Emmet has this reaction as he gets the feeling something's not right.]]
* OnceMoreWithClarity: When Emmet describes his nightmare at the beginning of the movie, Wyldstyle is screaming Emmet's name, apparently in distress and crying out for Emmet to save her. [[spoiler:Then when the nightmare becomes true, we realize that the Wyldstyle from Emmet's dream was actually screaming Emmet's name in ''horror'', because it was Emmet ''himself'' who caused Armamageddon.]]
* OneSteveLimit: {{Averted|Trope}} with Bruce Wayne (Batman) and Creator/BruceWillis (as a parody of [[Film/DieHard John McClane]]), and also [[spoiler:Emmet Brickowski and [[Franchise/BackToTheFuture "Doc" Emmett Brown]] (whose flux capacitor Rex steals to be able to go back in time)]].
* OOCIsSeriousBusiness:
** [[spoiler:Emmet realizes something's not right when he sees Superman being friendly with both Green Lantern (whom he previously couldn't stand to be around) and Lex Luthor.]]
** [[spoiler:When Wyldstyle accidentally knocks off Sweet Mayhem’s mask and has her hanging off the edge, she drops the Darth Vader copycat act and is legitimately ''terrified''.]]
* OpenSecret: Even Queen Watevra, who lives past the Stairgate in the Systar System, knows Batman's secret identity.
-->'''Watevra:''' Listen, Bruce...\
'''Batman:''' Who's Bruce?
* OrbitalShot: At the start of "Catchy Song", the camera circles around Wyldstyle to show her feeling of being surrounded by the speakers blaring the music. However, her head keeps facing the camera, [[ExorcistHead turning around on her shoulders at the same rate]].
* OurVampiresAreDifferent: They're [[Literature/TheTwilightSaga nonthreatening, attractive teenage vampires]] who talk about being in love but also how they can't be in a relationship, with [[GreenSkinnedSpaceBabe pale blue skin]] and [[AlienHair hair so sparkly it's crystalline]].
* OutOfFocus: Metalbeard, Benny and Unikitty have a lot less to do this time around, as they are captured and [[spoiler:willingly join in the fun with the Systar aliens]] rather quickly, leaving a greater focus on Emmet, Lucy, and Rex.
* OutsideContextProblem: The DUPLO aliens to the Bricksburgians. None of the heroes' attacks seem to have any effect on the invaders, and they even have the ability to eat lasers, which Metalbeard comments [[BeyondTheImpossible isn't possible]].
* OverlyLongGag: Emmet lets out a nearly ''thirty-second'' long gasp when he realizes that [[spoiler:Wyldstyle was the lead singer of the pop band that recorded "Everything is Awesome".]]
* PardonMyKlingon: When Wyldstyle goes into SuspiciouslySpecificDenial about [[spoiler:dying her hair black in shame]]:
-->'''Balthazar:''' Pardon my language, but she's a real grumpledumpuss.\
''[Everyone gasps]''
* ParentalBonus:
** The aesthetic of Bricksburg (now apparently renamed "[[MeaningfulName Apocalypseburg]]") post-invasion is an obvious reference to the look of post-apocalyptic films like ''Film/MadMaxFuryRoad'' and ''Film/PlanetOfTheApes1968'' that kids won't recognize.
** It's rather doubtful there are that many kids in the audience who will know who [[https://www.usatoday.com/story/life/movies/2019/01/19/ruth-bader-ginsburg-minifig-a-lego-movie-2/2624798002/ Ruth Bader Ginsburg]] is.
** Rex Dangervest references both ''Film/TheMatrix'' and ''Film/BackToTheFuture1'' by name. When a confused Emmet asks what those are, Rex replies that they're "classic movies that older kids get to watch."
** There are references abound to classic action movies, with Rex's raptors all being named after action heroes and [[spoiler:Bruce Willis making a cameo that parodies ''Film/DieHard'']].
** One that doubles as a StealthPun: [[spoiler:during his ''real'' backstory, one of the devices he used to make the ''Rexcelsior'' is a {{Film/hot tub|TimeMachine}}.]]
** A double during [[spoiler:the fake "intermission" that abruptly interrupts during the middle of a climactic scene]]: Creator/MontyPython did something similar in [[Film/MontyPythonAndTheHolyGrail one of their movies]], and the intermission itself is a direct reference to a commonly-heard jingle played in theaters decades ago.
* PerfectlyArrangedMarriage: [[spoiler:For Batman and Watevra, who both had non-altruistic reasons for wanting to marry. Watevra wanted to merge their worlds, and Batman just wanted to outdo Superman. They genuinely fall for each other while planning the wedding, to the point of becoming [[SickeninglySweethearts sickening]] to Ice Cream Cone.]]
* PerpetuallyProtean: Queen Watevra Wa'Nabi is not a minifig but made entirely of LEGO bricks. If at first she appears as a horse for a BaitAndSwitch, she soon enough demonstrates her shapeshifting power ''constantly''. In fact, the Queen pretty much change shape just to ''move around''. Especially during her {{Most Definitely Not a|Villain}} VillainSong, [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OIvW2tSjfXk "Not Evil"]], where she transforms for about every verse.
* PlantAliens: Emmet and Rex explore a planet teeming with Plantimals, which they then have to run from.
* PleaseDontLeaveMe: [[spoiler:Though the "please" isn't said, Batman begs Watevra not to leave him as she's shattered into pieces and sucked into the Bin of Storage. He even goes so far as to try gathering up her shattered pieces before he's sucked in as well.]]
* PoorCommunicationKills: [[spoiler:This ends up driving most of the plot. The Systarians really just wanted peace with the people of Bricksburg/Apocalypseburg, but thanks to a poor understanding of the latter's attitudes and even worse communication skills, they come across as sinister aggressors instead. In parallel, Bianca just wants to play with her older brother and be a part of his games, but the age gap between her and Finn made it difficult for her to understand how to join in, and Finn in turn didn't exactly verbalize his feelings on the situation well either.]]
* ThePowerOfHate:
** [[spoiler:As part of the alternate Emmet's turn into Rex Dangervest, he became so empowered by his rage that he was actually able to move with nearly full articulation in the real world and build himself a timeship.]]
** [[spoiler:Emmet (the one who isn't Rex) too starts to harness anger as a power for his "breaking" skills, and even manages a decent amount of articulation in the real world when Rex comes to Undar of the Dryar to try to finish him off -- not enough to be a match for Rex but impressive nonetheless.]]
* PresentDayPast: The ship containing members of the Justice League that leaves Bricksburg has Jason Momoa's version of Aquaman from the Franchise/DCExtendedUniverse, even though that scene is set shortly after the events of the first film, which was released several months before Momoa’s casting was announced.
* ProductPlacement: A LEGO model of a Chevrolet Silverado is briefly seen during one of Rex's backstory flashbacks.
* ProfileViewGag: When Sweet Mayhem's spaceship approaches the Systar System, at first we only see a lone, ordinary round planet. But then we get a side view, and the system is revealed to be composed of many planets with fantastic shapes, which were previously aligned perfectly.
* PropheticDream: [[spoiler:Emmet's nightmare from the beginning of the movie turns out to be this: he dreams that a dolphin clock reads 5:15 PM, and then Gandalf shouts "It's Armamageddon!" while black holes suck everyone into the Bin of Storaj. This dream comes true, because of Emmet ''himself'' destroying the wedding that would otherwise have ensured peace.]]
* ProudWarriorRaceGuys: The citizens of Bricksburg [[spoiler:in the view of the Systarians.]]
* PunBasedTitle: "The Second Part" isn't just reflecting this movie's status as a sequel. "Part" is often used as another word for LEGO bricks, pieces, elements, etc.
* RainbowPuke: One of the Stars vomits [[PlayingWithATrope a stream of rainbow glitter]] after being spun around and used as a weapon by General Mayhem.
* RaptorAttack: Rex's raptors are much taller than him, featherless, and most of them have a blue and green color scheme.
* RealWomenDontWearDresses: It's even a plot point InUniverse. [[spoiler:Wyldstyle was originally the lead singer of a pop band (literally, "[[ShapedLikeItself A POPular Band]]"), but darkened the blue parts of her hair with a Sharpie and changed her whole persona because she didn't feel like she was sufficiently tough.]]
* {{Retcon}}: A ''very'' small one. In the first movie, Emmet had a poster of A [=POPular=] Band in his apartment. Now, [[spoiler:Lucy presents Emmet with an original edition of the band's top hit album, "Everything Is Awesome". Except... one of the singers on the cover image now looks different from the poster image in the previous movie. But, she looks ''very'' familiar... to Emmet, and to ''us''.]]
* RetGone: [[spoiler:Rex Dangervest, as a BadFuture version of Emmet, disappears from existence, piece by piece, when Lucy convinces Emmet not to become like Rex during the final confrontation at the Dryar system.]]
* TheReveal: Quite a few.
** [[spoiler:The Systarians aren't evil; they just want peace.]]
** [[spoiler:Queen Watevra's true form is the heart that Emmet gave to the DUPLO aliens five years ago.]]
** [[spoiler:Rex Dangervest is the true villain of the movie, and he is also Emmet from the future after hardening his image due to feeling that he was abandoned and forgotten.]]
** [[spoiler:Lucy used to be a GirlyGirl and is one of the original artists that sang "Everything is Awesome".]]
* ReversePsychology: [[spoiler:How Queen Watevra convinces Batman to marry her in her song "Gotham City Guys". She claims not to want to because of his brooding loner persona and fear of commitment, and claims to be interested in his rival Superman instead. For bonus points, she claims that she's only pretending to be interested in Batman so that ''Superman'' will get jealous.]]
* RewatchBonus:
** After you've seen the movie once, the pre-timeskip scene with the DUPLO attacking Bricksburg takes on a new meaning [[spoiler:as it becomes clear that the DUPLO legitimately seem unaware that their behavior is destructive (or that a Batarang bouncing off a DUPLO does not mean the Batarang "missed"). This is because a then-very-young Bianca was only trying to play with her big brother Finn, so she wasn't even aware how badly a "we are here to destroy you" would come across, as she thought that's just how playing with her big brother would work]].
** [[spoiler:Many, if not ''all'', of Rex's actions become this when he is revealed to be not only the [[BigBad true villain]] but also Emmet's [[FutureMeScaresMe future self.]]]]
** [[spoiler:During the first cut into the real world, you can hear a heavily distorted argument between the two kids. During it, Finn mentions that he's trying to tell a "mature story about time travel and stuff". On second watch, this statement single-handedly clears up a lot of unanswered questions about how Rex's story relates to the meta-narrative.]]
* RogueProtagonist: [[spoiler:Emmet,]] the first movie's hero, becomes the villain here. [[spoiler:He's being manipulated by Rex Dangervest... [[MyFutureSelfAndMe who is also him.]]]]
* RuleOfSymbolism:
** The Lasso of Truth being left in the invisible jet [[spoiler:when Rex Dangervest steals it from Wonder Woman marks the moment where the truths about the Systar System, Queen Watevra Wa'Nabi, Armamageddon, and Rex himself are revealed]].
** The final heart bomb [[spoiler:used by Lucy, which destroys Rex's Flux Capacitor and ends Rex,]] gives a soft "''Goodbye''" instead of a "Hello!"
* RunningGag:
** The Systar heart bombs [[DissonantSerenity cheerily going "Hello!"]] right before exploding.
** Sweet Mayhem analyzing people through her helmet, and getting a list of unflattering assessments on her HeadsUpDisplay.
** Each time one of the Master Builders try to object against doing something or going somewhere, Mayhem uses her sticker gun or tractor field on them.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Tropes S to Z]]
* SayingSoundEffectsOutLoud:
** Sweet Mayhem is introduced with her flying around saying "beep boop" as she scans.
** Queen Watevra Wa-Nabi tells Sweet Mayhem to "[[BuffySpeak do the boopity bop bop]]" when asking her to call the elevator to the altar. Sweet Mayhem makes the sound as she inputs the command.
** Rex's raptors also say (in raptorese) "pew" when firing their lasers at the climax.
* ScrewTheRulesImDoingWhatsRight: [[spoiler:Finn decides it's best to repair his relationship with Bianca by playing with their LEGO despite their parents' orders to put them away. When their mother sees them playing, she doesn't try to scold them for breaking the rules and is happy to see them finally getting along.]]
* ScrewThisImOuttaHere: In the beginning, President Business just up and leaves the others to go golfing. [[spoiler: This is reflective of Finn's real life father leaving his kids to play with the LEGO, so his character is pretty much unneeded now.]]
* SecondChapterCliffhanger: {{Subverted}}. The movie seems to end on a low note, with [[spoiler:Rex Dangervest revealing himself as an embittered future version of Emmet who tricks him into starting the Armageddon but then strands him on Undar of the Dryar. Meanwhile, the Systarians and all of Emmet's friends are trapped in the Bin of Storage, unable to help. Then Lucy interrupts [[DarkReprise "Everything's Not Awesome"]] to rally everyone else to [[ToBeContinuedRightNow turn things around and save the day]]]].
* SequelNonEntity: Outside of a brief cameo during the beginning scene that represents the end of the first film, Vitruvius is never seen nor mentioned for the whole movie.
* SerialEscalation:
** The sequel brings the adventure into space past a Stairgate to the Systar System.
** Emmett builds a ''triple''-decker couch, following on his double-decker furniture. And this one ''turns into a MiniMecha''!
* ShoutOut: Has [[ShoutOut/TheLEGOMovie2TheSecondPart its own page]].
* SignsOfDisrepair: During Lucy's post-TimeSkip monologue, the first two letters are seen falling off the "BRICKSBURG" sign, leaving it reading "ICKSBURG".
* SomethingWeForgot: It's revealed that [[spoiler:in the original timeline, Rex was the result of this. He was originally Emmett who was forgotten by his friends after spending years stranded under the dryer, while the former were having too much fun partying with the Systarians.]]
* StealthHiBye: General Mayhem does the HI on Emmet and the Apocalypseburgers. After Emmet had opened the gate a crack to release the talking star and instantly shut it closed again, he's startled finding her standing right before him.
* StepfordSuburbia: Harmony Town. A land of endless and identical suburban housing, full of glitterized minifigures who try to brainwash Emmett and Rex by blasting "Catchy Song". [[spoiler:Except not really, as they're [[NotBrainwashed not actually brainwashed]] and are just trying to get more people to enjoy "Catchy Song".]]
* StopTheHeroTwist: The movie at first follows Emmet as he tries to save his friends from aliens with the help of a space explorer named Rex Dangervest. Meanwhile, Lucy tries to fight the aliens who abducted her, but in doing so, [[spoiler:she discovers that the aliens are not hostile and want to make peace between the two worlds. Then she realizes that Emmet is about to ruin everything with a MegatonPunch, manipulated by Rex, who is the real bad guy]].
* StylisticSuck: The movie retains the "props-attached-to-strings" details for InUniverse spaceflight.
* SuspicionAesop: When the heroes meet Queen Watevra Wa-Nabi, they're all suspicious of her intentions, believing her to be evil, even when she's singing about [[MostDefinitelyNotAVillain how evil she isn't]]--though she is able to win them over with gifts. Eventually, only Wyldstyle still believes she's evil. [[spoiler:In the end, it's revealed that she isn't evil, just [[PoorCommunicationKills bad at communicating]]. She and the other Systarians only wanted to be friends with the heroes, and thought that playing tough and mean was the way to do it]].
* SuspiciouslySpecificDenial:
** Queen Watevra Wa'Nabi's song "[[MostDefinitelyNotAVillain Not Evil]]" is largely a string of these, as is lampshaded repeatedly by Lucy. It's so blatant it comes off as a series of threats. [[spoiler:She's actually being completely honest, she just sucks at communicating.]]
--->'''Watevra Wa'Nabi:''' ♫ And there's no reason at all to be suspicious of me. ♫\
'''Lucy:''' I'm not going to lie, it's actually ''very'' suspicious you're leading with this.
** [[spoiler:Lucy rants that she]] did not sit in the mirror [[invoked]][[OldShame years ago in shame]] and [[spoiler:use a permanent marker to recolor her hair]].
** [[spoiler:Bruce Willis]] insists he definitely doesn't live in the air vents.
* SurprisinglyRealisticOutcome: A recurring theme in the movie is that even the seemingly smallest things and misunderstandings can lead to big consequences.
** [[spoiler:The Systarians' poor communication skills lead to suspicion and distrust from Lucy, who sees them as the bad guys, especially after Queen Watevra sings a song claiming she is not evil, a rare subversion of MostDefinitelyNotAVillain.]]
** [[spoiler:Lucy wanting Emmet to toughen up causes him to doubt her when she says she's not brainwashed. He ends up sticking with Rex, who was EvilAllAlong, and ends up causing Armamageddon.]]
** Building on that, [[spoiler:there's a deconstructed in-universe example. Emmett has an ImagineSpot that once he destroyed the wedding cake, it would automatically save the day, save his friends, earn Lucy's approval and prove to everybody he's a tough worth-while person. More-or-less the ''opposite'' happens: his actions set off Armamageddon, endangers every one including a [[WhatTheHellHero distraught]] Lucy, and he's left alone to realize it was a bad idea.]]
** [[spoiler:The entire trope is reconstructed when Lucy admits to the Systarians and the Apocalypsburgers that "Everything's not Awesome", but that doesn't mean they can't make things better, especially when they have each other.]]
* TableSpace: Batman and Watevra sit at opposite ends of a long table.
* {{Tagline}}: [[StealthPun They come in pieces.]]
* TakeMeToYourLeader: "Bring me your fiercest leader."
* TakeThat:
** [[ComicBook/{{Aquaman}} Classic Aquaman]] being left behind in Apocalypseburg while [[Film/Aquaman2018 his DCEU counterpart]] leaves with the Justice League to stop the alien invasion is no doubt a jab to [[ThisLooksLikeAJobForAquaman his perceived uselessness]] popularized by his ''WesternAnimation/SuperFriends'' incarnation.
** Prior to Batman and Watevera Wa'Nabi's marriage, there's a line about how Batman being married would be unfaithful to his character; this [[BitingTheHandHumor might be a slight one against DC Comics]], who were teasing Batman and Catwoman getting married for over a year before Selina decided that Bruce being happy would make Batman weaker.
** After giving the ''Franchise/StarWars'' franchise a memorable surprise appearance in the first movie, this time it's not given a cameo or offhand mention. No doubt due to Creator/PhilLordAndChrisMiller getting fired from directing ''Film/{{Solo}}''.
** All previous ''LEGO'' movies give zero direct references to Creator/{{Disney}}, though Marvel and ''Star Wars'' are exceptions. This time, Disney gets one: a parody named "Larry Poppins". In this one, due to the presence of DC characters, the characters explicitly mention that "Marvel's not returning our calls."
%%** Rex serves as a take down of various 80s/90s blockbuster hero tropes, as so many have been combined into him he's reached levels of absurdity. [[spoiler:He also serves as a take down of certain (especially teenaged) fans of popular contemporary works who refuse to acknowledge there are many ways of enjoying those works, instead claiming other fans (often female fans like Bianca) are somehow enjoying a work the "wrong" way, and are even willing to destroy their fandom and walk away claiming the whole thing was "childish" anyway rather than sharing their fandom with others.]] ( Belongs in YMMV ) %%
* TeachHimAnger: Rex Dangervest does this for Emmet to teach him how to be a "Master Breaker" who can destroy enemy builds. [[spoiler:However, his real reason for doing so is to bring about Armamageddon.]]
* TemporalParadox: Rex's raptors Ripley, Connor, and The Other One are still around [[spoiler:even after Rex's timeline and existence were erased]].
* TemptingFate:
** A twofer: With General Mayhem at the gates of the shelter, Lucy proclaims that the gate would never, ever open. [[NiceJobBreakingItHero Cue Emmet opening the door to let the star out.]] Emmet then brushes it off saying nothing got in, only for the camera to [[BehindTheBlack pan over]] [[RightBehindMe to show General Mayhem standing next to him]].
** What else would you expect when someone says "Now there's nothing to worry about"?
** After getting stuck Undar the Dryar, Emmet comments that things can't be utterly hopeless. Then a (real-life) spider crawls over the minifig, to which he realizes that yes, it can.
* TestosteronePoisoning: Rex Dangervest's occupation is saving the galaxy. He has a ship shaped like a fist, makes a DynamicEntry by demolishing a meteor with his bare hands, has PermaStubble, trains raptors, is a cowboy, and does archaeology on the side. [[spoiler:The point of the movie might be to avert this.]]
* ThematicSequelLogoChange: The "2" in the logo is made of transparent blue bricks similar to the Glassteroids that Emmet encounters trying to go through the Stairgate.
* ThemeNaming: The names of Rex's raptors are all nods to badass movies and characters therein, such as Franchise/{{Rocky}}, [[Film/TheTerminator Connor]], [[Film/{{Alien}} Ripley]] and [[Film/TotalRecall1990 Quaid]]. Yet another facet of his exaggerated "tough guy" image.
* ThisIsASong:
** "Catchy Song" is an [[ExactlyWhatItSaysOnTheTin aptly named]] tune about how it is a, well,[[invoked]] [[EarWorm catchy song]].
** The rap verses of "Super Cool" make mention of how it is a credits song.
* ThisIsGonnaSuck: The looks on both Finn and Bianca's faces say this [[spoiler:when Mom [[AgonyOfTheFeet/AnimatedFilms steps on a LEGO brick]]]].
* TimeSkip: Five years after the events of the [[WesternAnimation/TheLEGOMovie first film]], which correlates to the amount of time passed in Finn and Bianca's life, and roughly the meta-years between films.
* TimeTravelersDinosaur: Rex Dangervest's crew of Velociraptors, since [[spoiler:Rex's ship; the ''Rexcelsior'', is a time machine]].
* ToBeContinuedRightNow: After [[spoiler:Lucy and the rest of the characters get put away in storage, a "THE END" sign comes up, but Lucy says this shouldn't be the ending]].
* TookALevelInJerkass:
** "Scribble Cop", the reborn good half of Bad Cop, is just as sour as everyone else after the TimeSkip, responding to Emmet's friendly greeting with a growl.
** Lord Business ditches the group and goes to play a round of golf after the Duplos invade.
* TrailersAlwaysSpoil: Although not obvious as a spoiler at the time of its release, [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vG3vt1ubcDg "Emmet's Holiday Special"]], a short that was released before the movie, shows Queen Watevra Wa'Nabi and General Mayhem seemingly plotting a malicious invasion to Apocalypseburg... only to join in the festivities by adding a star to the top of the Apocalypsburgers' Christmas tree. [[spoiler:This parallels Queen Watevra Wa'Nabi and General Mayhem's roles in the actual film, coming across as evil due to their mannerisms but being well-intentioned in reality.]]
* TraitorShot: Throughout "Not Evil" Queen Whatevra Wa'Nabi smirks deviously at the camera whenever Wyldstyle and the others can't see her face. [[spoiler: Later on subverted. She really did mean everything she said in that song, she just ''really'' sucks at saying it convincingly.]]
* TriumphantReprise: "Everything's Not Awesome" begins as a DarkReprise to the first film's "Everything Is Awesome" after [[spoiler:Armamageddon comes around and they're thrown into the storage bin]] until Wyldstyle realizes that everything ''can'' be awesome, but only if we work together to make it that way. In a way, it's a Triumphant Reprise to both "Everything Is/Is-Not Awesome" as it takes the creepily optimistic theme of the first and combines it with the cynicism of the second to create something realistic yet hopeful. It also doubles (triples?) as a Triumphant Reprise to "Catchy Song", as some of the citizens of the Systar System begin singing lines from it as well. [[EarWorm Well, just the one line, really.]]
* {{Tykebomb}}: Emmet says hello to a group of babies brandishing weapons emerging from the sewers.
* UnfazedEveryman: Emmet is completely unbothered by the post-apocalyptic state of Bricksburg, to the extent that he [[{{Cloudcuckoolander}} might not even notice what's going on]].
* UngratefulTownsfolk: The residents of Apocalypseburg show Emmet little respect, in spite of the fact that he saved them from Lord Business in the previous movie. Being hit by an alien invasion only a minute afterward that turned Bricksburg into a wasteland obviously explains their attitude.
* UnusuallyUninterestingSight: In the epilogue, where [[spoiler:the two worlds have merged into Syspocalypstar, President Business doesn't seem to notice that Bricksburg looks a lot different from the way it did before he left for his golfing trip 5 years ago.]]
* VengefulAbandonedToy: Rex Dangervest [[spoiler:turns out to be a version of Emmet from an alternate timeline where he failed to make it through the Stairgate and]] got stranded in Undar of the Dryar System (under the dryer in the basement). Upset that nobody bothered to rescue him, he [[spoiler:eventually got tired of waiting and became animate through his own anger. He cobbled together a time machine from other time machines and went back to save his past self from getting stranded, trick him into kickstarting Armamageddon, and launch him to Undar of the Dryar to maintain his existence]].
* VillainSong: Queen Watevra Wa'Nabi gets ''two'' songs, both of which have all the hallmarks of this trope; "Not Evil" is about her trying to convince the Apocalypseburgers that she's MostDefinitelyNotAVillain and just wants to help them make all their dreams come true, while "Gotham City Guys" is about her using ReversePsychology to convince Batman [[spoiler:to marry her. Watevra turns out to actually ''not'' be a villain, just a really bad communicator. This makes "Not Evil" a villain song that's not a villain song, that ''tells you'' it's not a villain song... which makes it seem like a villain song.]].
* VoiceOfTheLegion: Sweet Mayhem. [[spoiler:The helmet deepens her voice. She speaks like a normal girl without it.]]
* VoluntaryShapeshifter: [[PunnyName Queen Watevra Wa'Nabi]] is not a minifigure, but a collection of bricks that can reshape herself in any form.
* WalkingSpoiler: You can't talk about [[spoiler:Maya Rudolph]]'s role in the film without spoiling what "Armamageddon" is.
* WeddingSmashers: [[spoiler:Having been manipulated by Rex, Emmet literally smashes Batman and Queen Watevra's wedding by shattering their wedding cake altar.]]
* WelcomeToHell:
** Or "Welcome to heck," as Rex puts it when he and Emmet arrive in Harmony Town.
** And Lucy narrates, "We call it ''Apocalypseburg'', and it is a '''heck'''ish place to live."
* WeWantOurJerkBack: Inverted. Everyone keeps chiding Emmet for retaining his innocent, optimistic sunniness in the face of the apocalypse and wants him to grow up and take things seriously. [[spoiler:Then, not only does his attempt to do so cause Armamageddon, but it turns out that Rex is a future version of him who became a hard-hearted villain because everyone abandoned him.]] Everyone quickly realizes that they actually want their nice, happy, sunny-natured friend to not become a grim and gritty jerk after all.
* WhamLine:
-->'''Emmet:''' What are you talking about? Who are you?\
'''Rex:''' Look a little closer. We're not so different.\
'''Emmet:''' You and I? Huh?\
'''Rex:''' Emmet, [[spoiler:I'm you.]]\
'''Emmet:''' [[spoiler:But ''I'm'' me.]]\
'''Rex:''' [[spoiler:I'm you. From the future. All grown up.]]
* WhamShot:
** One that cements the big reveal: [[spoiler:As Batman and Watevra's wedding commences and Mayhem is trying to convince Wyldstyle that she and her friends are actually GoodAllAlong, Ice Cream Cone announces that Watevra will change into her original form... the brick-built heart that Emmet offered as a peace offering five years ago.]]
** At the very end of the movie, [[spoiler:Lucy leaves a remix album of "Everything is Awesome" for Emmet as a token of her gratitude. Then we get a close up of the cover image of A [=POPular=] Band. One of the singers looks ''very'' familiar...]]
* WhatHappenedToTheMouse: The ending shows [[spoiler:Connor, Ripley, and The Other One living happily alongside the rest of the cast, but nothing is shown about all the other raptors, nor of the ''Rexcelsior''.]]
* WidowedAtTheWedding: [[spoiler:Batman, when Emmet causes Armamageddon. He shatters their wedding cake altar and Queen Watevra is shattered into pieces as well. Batman tries to hold on to the last piece of her face but loses her and frantically tries to gather up her pieces before he's sucked into the Bin of Storaj.]]
* WingdingEyes: Benny gets hearts in his eyes during Queen Watevra Wa'Nabi's song "Not Evil", when she promises him his own planet and astronaut team to build spaceships. Later, during the spaceship fleet attack against Rex, Benny's eyes turn into spirals when he yells, "Don't touch me while I'm SPACESHIPPING!"
* TheWorfEffect: Emmet's friends proved to be a BadassCrew in the first movie, but are quickly neutralized and captured by General Mayhem at the beginning of this one.
* WorstWhateverEver: Surrounded by the inhabitants of Harmony Town all singing "Catchy Song" in unison, Rex Dangervest exclaims "This is the most disturbing thing I've ever seen!"
* WrongSideAllAlong: [[spoiler:Rex Dangervest turns out to be the real BigBad manipulating Emmet; the MostDefinitelyNotAVillain Queen Watevra Wa'Nabi and company ''really'' aren't villains, just very bad at conveying it.]]
* YankTheDogsChain:
** Happens to Banarnar [[spoiler:during Armamageddon. Just when he manages to for once avoid slipping on his peel by managing to grab hold of a pole, his peel flies off shortly before he's sucked into the Bin of Storaj.]]
** [[ButtMonkey Green Lantern]] lampshades this during the same scene.
--->'''Green Lantern:''' Noooo!! I was finally valued! Noooo!!
* YouAreNotAlone: Emmet comes to this realization [[spoiler:in his verbal spar with Rex.]]
-->'''Emmet:'''...because everything's not awesome, [[TheAntiNihilist but we can make it a little more awesome]] if we remember we're not alone in this world. We're in it together.
* ZoomedOutReframingGag:
** As Rex guides Emmet's Rescue Rocket through the Stairgate, a bunch of trippy visuals occur as Rex passes through it, which ends when it cuts to a distant shot of the Rescue Rocket coming out the other side with a popping sound.
** When Emmet and Rex prepare to head to the Systar System, there's a few shots of the Rexcelsior rolling out...before cutting to a distant shot of the Rexcelsior moving across the wide background in a similar fashion to the top of the Octan Tower from the first movie.
** When Lucy stops Rex from escaping in Undar of the Dryar System, Rex accidentally punches one of Lucy's exploding hearts, but the explosion is seen from the perspective of a human as a pink flash under a dryer.
