Cidolfas: Discussing what someone added for Tom Holt:

  • Considering how many of his characters get the girl in the end, it's not that cynical. Besides, The Power of Love plays a key role in The Portable Door.

Firstly, just because someone "gets the girl" doesn't mean Holt considers love a good thing. Certainly in the JWW series, the protagonists that "get the girl" are portrayed as being either brainwashed by a love potion, or setting themselves up for a life of misery (admittedly it's somewhat mitigated in A Better Mousetrap, which shows Paul and Sophie as a rather absentminded couple). If anything, The Power of Love is the exact opposite of the point of The Portable Door, which is that love isn't enough and one needs chemical assistants to get anywhere near it.

Ununnilium:
This is not to say that his works aren't great. They're awesome. And yes, I had to add this. It was haunting me.

Sorry, but time to read Justifying Edit. `-`

  • Not too surprising because Tolkien only wrote two books for Terry Brooks to draw almost all of his inspiration from.

Now come on, really.

Later:

  • Most of Robert A. Heinlein's work (at least that which this troper is familiar with) can be summed up in a single brief line: First-person perspective, Author Filibuster, redheads.

The only part of that which is really representative of his work is the redheads, and that's already in Author Appeal.

Yet later:

  • Terry Goodkind, like JK Rowling, has only written one series thus far, though his of course was longer and far more detailed and realistic. Unlike her, however, his stories are not fantasy novels, but are instead filled with important human themes, and people talking about them, quite a lot. For pages, even. Because he's just that deep. Like Ayn Rand, though not quite as good, of course. Seriously, though, he's the best author since Aristotle, or something...

This is incredibly vague. Just tell us instead of kinda-sorta alluding to it with Pot Holes.

(Also, hasn't he written several series? Or am I thinking of another Terry? Not Pratchett, not Brooks...)

Air Of Mystery: Me, I just overuse semicolons. Why the hell semicolons?!

Octal: Hey, anyone for alphebetizing this (by author's last name)? I could do it, if others think it's a good idea.

cg12345: Aww, what happened to the Frank Miller entry? Has he stopped writing about whores or something?

  • Ahh, much better, thank you.

Took this out:

  • Andrei Tarkovsky's films are................................................................ .............................................................................................. .............................................................................................. .............................................................................................. .............................................................................................. .............................................................................................. .............................................................................................. .............................................................................................. .................................................... like this

because I don't know what it's supposed to mean and it's a little annoying.
