Dalek Kan Noladti: It's because everyone wants the little white girl to grow up and become fuckable. You can call me crass for this, but you know it's true. The media measures the value of a person as a character in media as their attractiveness (future attractiveness for children) for mating.

Looney Toons: 30 May 2006 — Incoming new example: Tiffany Marie Souers.

Suzloua: I'm quite confused as to why Madeleine Mc Cann is included in the "not high profile cases" list in the introduction - I don't know how she is viewed internationally, but in the UK, Maddie hysteria dominated the press for months. Virtually ever paper (certainly every tabloid/red top) had a Maddie story on the front page every single day of summer 07. Up until Christmas, she was still making regular appearances, although it's died off a bit in 2008, the anniversary of her disappearance in May 08 got her back in the headlines for a few days. Indeed, Maddie fatigue set in a long time ago amongst the more cynical man on the street - jokes about "the Renault Mc Cann - room for a small child in the boot" have been doing the rounds for the last year. Many people have mentioned the fact that hundreds of equally cute, equally loved young black children from less salubrious neighbourhoods went missing last May too, so where's their press coverage? Instead it's all on this white, blonde, blue eyed girl. I wonder how many of the other parents left their three year olds alone while they went out for dinner... but that's a rant for another day.

Rissa: For 'the more cynical man on the street', read 'everyone who isn't a Mc Cann or a tabloid journalist'. We're sorry they lost their daughter, yes, but... come on. Enough is enough.

Mac Phisto: Not to put myself up on a pedestal, but I once wrote an editor for the local newspaper, denouncing my disgust for this phenomenon. Let's just say the reaction from readers was mixed.
