I think this needs to be changed:
"expect the brainiest to dramatically declare "...checkmate!" while numerous pieces are left on the board, actually revealing one is awful at chess"
because the number of pieces left on the board is not really relevant to checkmate.
I propose a new topic, "old black? poor? street chess player". Unfortunately I cannot remember exact films besides "Independence Day", and even of that one I am unsure, but I have seen the following scene somewhere at least thrice:
- Protagonist is presented to the audience. He or she is playing chess on the street or a park, possibly surrounded by more people playing chess. The counterpart is always an old man, I think often black and poor. The game gets interrupted by plot-relevant news (or the news come immediately after the game). The protagonist does not necessarily win, though.
The trope indicates us two things: - First, that the protagonist is intelligent (hence it is a subtrope of Smart People Play Chess) - Second, that the protagonist is amicable towards minorities and/or poor people, and/or humble. Usually this protagonist is himself rich or at least successful (brilliant scientist or detective).
If I had the time to look at the sources :( but I haven't so I let it here as idea.
I propose eliminating the Deep Blue example, it's attracted quite a bit of natter (including my own) and, really, it's not a very good example of accomplished AI in any case, hardly qualifying for making the stated case as it demonstrates mainly two qualities, a huge memory bank of opening plays and optimal searching algorithms, stuff usually not associated with 'geniuses', not to mention the controversies surrounding the match (including the very real question of that crucial 7th move). Thoughts anyone?
Hide / Show RepliesYeah, Deep Blue may be an example of something, but it's not a very good one of Smart People Playing Chess. Deleted along with other general cleaning duties.
See you in the discussion pages.
If anyone knows which fanfic this is, please put it back with a title.
