The 2013 sequel to Kick-Ass, the sequel adapts the second volume of the comic book and the Hit-Girl interquel.

It's three years after Dave Lizewski (Aaron Johnson) hung up his tights as Kick-Ass, and 15-year old Mindy McCready (Chloë Grace Moretz) is starting highschool at Dave's school...in theory. In reality, whilst Mindy's guardian is trying to give her a normal life, she's skipping school every day to train and fight criminals as Hit-Girl. Dave, bored with his life after retiring from superheroics, begs her to take him on as a sidekick. After Dave gets back in the tights, he soon learns that he and Hit-Girl are no longer the only costumed vigilantes in New York, and joins Justice Forever, a group of like-minded individuals led by Colonel Stars-and-Stripes (Jim Carrey).

Meanwhile, Chris D'Amico (Christopher Mintz-Plasse) is still seeking revenge on Kick-Ass for the death of his father, and suddenly finds himself in a position to do something about it.

While the majority of the cast returns, Jeff Wadlow replaces Matthew Vaughn and Jane Goldman as director and writer, whilst Vaughn remains co-producer. The film opened in August 2013.

Kick-Ass 2 provides examples of:

  • Achilles in His Tent: Mindy, in order to keep a promise to her dad, stops fighting crime as Hit-Girl for most of the movie. She comes back for the final battle.
  • Actor Allusion: Dr. Gravity saying "I'm not really a doctor." Well, not nearly.
  • Adaptational Ugliness: While not ugly per se, in the comics Remembering Tommy were a young couple in fairly revealing Medieval knight-inspired costumes. In the film they're an older couple in much less intimidating matching outfits.
  • Adaptation Distillation: Adapts both the second volume of Kick-Ass and the Hit-Girl interquel.
  • Adaptation Expansion: In the comics, Chris learnt Kick-Ass's secret identity during the climax of Volume 1. Because that didn't happen in the first film, Todd lets slip that it was Dave's father who was arrested for being Kick-Ass and not Dave himself. Another by-product of this, is that the Toxic Mega Cunts didn't attack the neighborhood where Katie's family lived so they could attack Kick-Ass through her, and he instead goes after Night-Bitch of Justice Forever, a bit-part character in the comics.
  • Adaptation Name Change: Colonel Stars-and-Stripes' dog is named Eisenhower, as opposed to Sophia in the comic, with an extended scene has the Colonel explain that Eisenhower is her hero name and that Sofia is her secret identity. Furthermore, Colonel Stars-and-Stripes was simply Colonel Stars in the comic, whilst he had a brother named Lieutenant Stripes.
  • Adapted Out: Several of the Motherfucker's most horrific actions in the second volume of the comic, such as raping Katie and killing Colonel Stars' dog. In the film, he tries to rape Miranda Swendlow/Night Bitch, but he can't get an erection, and when he's actually asked by one of the Toxic Mega Cunts members if he wants to kill Colonel Stars-and-Stripes' dog, he says that he's "not that evil."
  • Advertised Extra: Colonel Stars-and-Stripes only has almost 8 minutes of screentime (according to IMDb) before being killed by Mother Russia. But, hey, it's Jim Carrey, after all, so naturally his name is on the poster, and he is present in the majority of the promo materials.
  • Age Lift: Hit-Girl/Mindy McCready is aged to 15, as opposed to remaining 12 as in the comic.
  • All Your Base Are Belong to Us: The Toxic Mega Cunts trashing Justice Forever's HQ.
  • Alpha Bitch: Brooke, in spades.
  • And This Is for...: Kick-Ass during the Final Battle.
  • And Your Little Dog, Too!: Subverted. The Motherfucker specifically refuses to kill Col. Stars-and-Stripes' dog, saying he was "not that evil." In the comics, he actually did have the dog killed.
  • The Atoner: Colonel Stars-And-Stripes shows shades of this: he's a mob enforcer turned superhero/born-again Christian.
  • Ax-Crazy: Chris D'Amico evolves into a raving violent psychopath.
  • Bad People Abuse Animals: While Chris delightfully witnesses the death of Colonel Stars-And-Stripes, Mother Russia offers to kill his dog. Chris however doesn't want the dog to die claiming he's not that evil and leaves the dog spared.
  • Battle Couple:
    • Remembering Tommy.
    • Dave and Mindy seem to have formed one by the end of the film.
  • Big Bad Wannabe: Uncle D'Amico tries to invoke this to get the Motherfucker to lay low. He's in prison, but the warden's a friend, and he pretty effortlessly has Javier's throat slit. While it plays over the phone. Still, it only seems to harden his resolve.
  • Bitch in Sheep's Clothing:
    • Brooke is nice to Mindy until she regards Mindy as a threat.
    • Katie is also retroactively revealed to be one, as she reveals she was cheating on Dave all along before breaking up with him over a misunderstanding, without giving him any chance to explain.
  • Bittersweet Ending: The Motherfucker along with the Toxic Mega Cunts are defeated, and Mindy and Dave share a kiss. However, costumed heroes are now outlawed and Mindy's on the run from the police after killing six criminals who kidnapped Dave. Despite the outlaw, Dave plans on continuing as Kick-Ass while upgrading his costume, having accepted that superheroes can't exist in the real world "because the real world needs real heroes."
  • Black Comedy Rape: The Motherfucker tries to rape Night Bitch, but since he can't get an erection, he turns around to play with himself to try and get one, but fails.
  • Black Dude Dies First: In the context of the final battle, Black Death being Hit-Girl's first fatality counts.
  • Bond One-Liner:
    • Hit-Girl, to Mother Russia, and in Russian to boot, after stabbing her to death with glass shards:
Hit-Girl: I thought a cunt like you could handle all those little pricks.
    • Hit-Girl again, early in the film, right after she cuts off the hand of a thug once the thug tries to grab his switchblade after promising Hit-Girl he'd never commit a crime again. This one is even lampshaded by Hit-Girl, who promptly asks Dave what he thought of her line, and even saying that she had written a whole bunch of them for use.
      Hit-Girl: Pants on fire.
  • Brawn Hilda: Mother Russia is a strong, mannish Russian (well, duh) woman who's the main muscle of the Toxic Mega Cunts.
  • Brick Joke:
    • A somewhat literal one: During the training montage, the female half of Remembering Tommy places a brick in a purse as a weapon. In the final fight she beats up people with said purse.
    • A straighter example happens when we see the "sick stick" devices Mindy uses on the popular bitches, making them vomit and void their bowels against their own will. That also comes back during the final fight.
    • The shark, and whether it's alive or dead. Alive, as Motherfucker finds out.
    • When Mindy leaves to go on her first date, she mentions that she can "kill a man with his own finger". She later proves this on Black Death.
    • One of Dave's schoolmates in an early scene is rude to Dave, and is said to be a Twitter follower of Motherfucker. The character later shows up as one of the horde of Toxic Mega Cunts in the finale, identifiable by his haircut.
  • Break the Cutie: Attempted by Brooke against Mindy whom she thinks is innocent and fragile. It works for that evening.
  • Brown Note: The "sick stick" device, judging by its effects, is based on this urban legend.
  • Bullet Time: Hit-Girl after being injected with adrenaline during her fight with Mother Russia.
  • But Now I Must Go: Hit-Girl leaves New York City at the end of the film after killing some mooks with a cop's Glock 17 while saving Dave.
  • Call-Back: The following exchange between Dave and Marty, when Marty finds out Dave is Kick-Ass, is pretty much word-for-word with one that happens between Dave and Katie when she finds out he's Kick-Ass.
Marty: Dave, Why are you dressed as Kick-Ass?
    Dave: I am Kick-Ass.
  • The Cameo: Former UFC champion Chuck Liddell as Chris' personal trainer.
  • Captain Ethnic: Genghis Carnage and Black Death, as named by D'Amico. Javier calls him out on them. There's also Mother Russia.
Javier: You gotta stop with the racial stereotyping.
    Chris: They're archetypes.
  • Captain Patriotic:
    • Col. Stars-and-Stripes is parody of the archetype. Eisenhower, Col. Stars-and-Stripes' dog, is wearing a mask with the US flag.
    • Battle Guy too; his costume is almost entirely a cheap Captain America knockoff, complete with a shield.
    • Mother Russia is also a Captain Patriotic of sorts, judging by her supervillain name and the Soviet hammer-and-sickle emblem on her bra and eyepatch. Helps that she was a former member of the KGB.
  • Cheap Costume: Almost all superheroes and supervillains in the movie wear shoddy makeshift costumes.
  • Chekhov's Gun: The "last resort" needles. Which turn out to be adrenaline.
  • Chekhov's Lecture: Colonel Stars-and-Stripes teaches his fellow heroes to use open-palm strikes when aiming for the face, as a closed fist is likely to result in self-injury. When he forgets this against Mother Russia, she is unharmed and he recoils in pain. Of course, this being Mother Russia, he could have done it the right way and probably wouldn't have fared any better.
  • Curb-Stomp Battle:
    • Any time Hit-Girl takes somebody on in the film, except for Mother Russia.
    • Any time Mother Russia gets her hands dirty in the film, including single-handedly taking out a squad of ten cops and wiping the floor with Hit-Girl. Hit-Girl is forced to trick her into injecting her with adrenaline to get the upper hand and then Mother Russia winds up receiving a curbstomping of her own.
  • Dark Messiah: The Motherfucker tries to invoke this with mixed results. He calls himself an "evil Jesus" before he falls off the roof, and about midway through the fall he realizes his mistake, and falls into a shark tank, where his pet shark bites off his legs and penis.
  • Darker and Edgier: invoked Chris D'Amico ditches the orange version of the Red Mist suit seen at the end of the first film and adopts a new costume that is literally bondage gear while rechristening himself "The Motherfucker".
  • Dance Battler: Inverted when Mindy uses her combat skills to try out for the cheerleading squad.
  • David Versus Goliath: Hit-Girl vs. the enormous Mother Russia. Hit-Girl wins.
  • Dead Star Walking: Jim Carrey, as Colonel Stars-and-Stripes is Killed Off for Real in the middle of the film.
  • Death by Adaptation: Angie D'Amico is killed early in the film when her son accidentally breaks her tanning bed while she's inside it.
  • Death of a Thousand Cuts: Hit-Girl kills Mother Russia with multiple pieces of glass.
  • Deconstruction: The sequel is more consistent than the first installment (that had Decon-Recon Switch moments) in showing how superheroism would (not) work in a real-life setting. It still ends with Dave deciding to continue as a costumed hero, though.
  • Demoted to Extra: Katie's screentime is drastically reduced compared with the first film, almost to the extent of being a Sequel Nonentity. But then again, she barely appears in the Kick-Ass 2 comic, even when you account for the rape scene.
  • Designated Girl Fight: Downplayed and justified. Both Hit-Girl and Mother Russia are shown fighting, and severely wounding/killing several male mooks early in the movie. When it comes to the climax, they face off against each other. Both are clearly the most competent fighters on either side.
  • Disney Villain Death: When Motherfucker purposely allows himself to fall from his HQ's roof (an action that he hilariously regrets during his fall) he lands safely on his shark tank... And of course, only to be eaten by said shark seconds later. The Stinger shows he survived, albeit with his legs and dick bitten off by the shark.
  • Distracted by the Sexy: Hit-Girl, a total of three times. The first time is when Dave starts changing into pimp clothing early in the film, the second time is when she's shown a Union J music video, and the third time is when Dave takes his shirt off right before the climax.
  • Dirty Cop: Some prison guards accept bribes from The Motherfucker, leaving the area where Dave's father is being held and letting in some thugs to kill him.
  • Does This Remind You of Anything?: Dave Can't Stay Normal despite having a happy life, and decides to go back into the hero field with Mindy's help. This leads to Dave losing his girlfriend, his friendship with Mindy briefly, and his father to the Motherfucker. Dave may very well be a metaphor for a soldier with PTSD who without help loses the important relationships in his life.
  • The Dragon: Mother Russia is the Motherfucker's strongest and by far deadliest minion. Not only does she take out ten police officers by herself, but she's the one who takes on Hit-Girl during the final fight.
  • 11th-Hour Superpower: The "last resort" adrenaline shot is this for Hit-Girl, allowing her to completely turn the tables on Mother Russia.
  • Equal-Opportunity Evil: Despite being blatantly racist and sexist, the Motherfucker's Quirky Miniboss Squad still includes a black guy, an Asian guy, and a Russian woman.
  • Even Bad Men Love Their Mamas: Though Chris D'Amico's always bickering with his mom, when he inadvertently kills her he's very distraught. He clearly did care about her, even if the two did not get along.
  • Even Evil Has Standards: Invoked by The Motherfucker. D'Amico remorselessly orders Mother Russia to kill Colonel Stars and decapitate him, but he is taken aback when Mother Russia asks him if he wants the Colonel's dog killed.
Motherfucker: Jesus Christ, I'm not that evil!
  • Evil-Detecting Dog: Eisenhower figures out the Toxic Mega Cunts are ambushing Colonel Stars-and-Stripes before the man himself does. It doesn't help.
  • Evil Is Hammy: After becoming a full-fledged supervillian, Chris D'Amico starts chewing scenery by the truckload.
  • Eye Patch Of Power: Mother Russia sports one.
  • Eye Scream: Black Death, courtesy of Hit-Girl.
  • Exact Words: Mindy uses this during the scene of Dave's training shown at the start of the film. After shooting him in the chest (whilst wearing a bullet-proof vest) when he said he wasn't ready for it, she goes for a higher-calibre gun to try again. He tells her not to do the same thing and shoot him in the chest anyway and she promises not to. He then turns around and she shoots him in the back instead.
  • Fanservice Extra: Two naked, well-endowed prostitutes in Chris D'Amico's pool.
  • Fed to the Beast: This is Motherfucker's plan for Kick-Ass, to feed him to an imported shark. It happens to him instead.
  • First Kiss: Mindy's is with Dave at the end of the movie.
  • For the Evulz: The Motherfucker's primary motivation besides getting revenge.
  • Frothy Mugs of Water: Hit-Girl uses an adrenaline shot that re-energizes her for a Heroic Second Wind against Mother Russia. Compare this to the comic book version of Hit-Girl, who snorts cocaine for a similar situation.
  • Gangsta Style: Motherfucker holds his Para-Ordnance Nite-Tacs on an elderly man, who warns him about the guns having a kick if fired sideways. He fires anyways and receives the recoiled frame straight to the head.
  • Gratuitous Russian: Hit-Girl's one-liner in the final battle. The movie subtitles it as, "I would've thought a cunt like you could handle all those pricks." What she actually says (in barely-comprehensible Russian) is, "You can't handle it when they take you from all sides."
  • Groin Attack: Eisenhower, Col. Stars-and-Stripes' dog, is specifically trained to attack men's lower parts.
  • Happy Ending Override: Dave had a loving girlfriend and Mindy had a bright future at school? Not anymore! Katie is now a cheating jerk, and Mindy is an outcast at school.
  • Hero Insurance: Subverted; as Hit-Girl notes, vigilantes don't get a free pass.
  • Hollywood Law: The police "detain" all masked superheroes in New York City, but most aren't shown committing any crimes.note  Dave's dad even explicitly says he has to be released because of this. In reality, the cops would not do this because it could result in the city being sued for false arrest, which might cost millions. The Justice Forever members also say they're "on parole" in the funeral scene after their release, though there it may be a joke.
  • Husky Russkie: Mother Russia is a very rare female example.
  • Hypocrite: Katie is furious at Dave's alleged cheating (which he wasn't), despite the fact that she has been cheating on him for some time.
  • Idiot Ball: When the Motherfucker goes looking for Night Bitch after discovering that she's Kick-Ass' girlfriend, he comes across one Miranda Swendlow. When one of his fellow Toxic Mega Cunts asks him how he's sure that she's Night Bitch while going to her house, the Motherfucker says that she posted on Facebook that she's in a relationship with Kick-Ass.
  • I Just Want to Be Normal: Hit-Girl tries this for most of the movie, but realizes that fighting evil is a responsibility she can't ignore.
  • I'm a Humanitarian: Mother Russia ate her cellmate during her time in a gulag.
  • Imperial Stormtrooper Marksmanship Academy: The police during the funeral scene.
  • Improbable Weapon User:
    • Mother Russia does heavy damage with a propane canister, a car door, and a lawn mower to name a few.
    • The Tumor is also shown to have killed two guys with a broken pool cue.
    • Hit-Girl manages to kill Mother Russia with shards of glass.
  • Interchangeable Asian Cultures: Genghis Carnage. Named after a Mongolian, yet appears to be of Chinese descent.
  • Jerkass Has a Point: In the opening, Katie noticeably misses Dave when he starts cutting classes to train with Mindy. Despite the fact that they're a couple, he's hanging out with another girl younger than they are, and engaging in dangerous activity. Katie is mean during their breakup, but she calls out Dave more for not being there for her. He doesn't seem that distraught at losing his girlfriend.
  • Jumped at the Call: All the costumed heroes in the city. Even in the climax, after they've been outlawed, they still arrive as reinforcements when Kick-Ass and Mindy need to fight the Toxic Mega Cunts.
  • Jump Scare: A more comical one, but after Colonel Stars-and-Stripes' crew beat up and restrain members of the prostitution ring, the last guy tries to run for it, only for the Colonel himself to leap from off screen and tackle him down.
  • Just Desserts: Motherfucker gets eaten by his own shark at the end.
  • Juxtaposition Gag: In a serious moment, showing Hit-Girl in uniform on a pink bed in a very girly room.
  • Karma Houdini:
    • Todd/Ass-Kicker reveals to the Motherfucker that the man who was arrested for being Kick-Ass was actually Dave's father. Despite being remorseful, he doesn't get any comeuppance from Dave or any of the other Justice Forever members.
    • Ralph D'Amico never gets punished for making the Motherfucker go Axe-Crazy or for ordering one of his thugs to kill Javier.
  • Kick the Dog:
    • The Motherfucker ordering Dave's father killed and sending a picture of his murder to him. Notably, though, he refuses to kill Eisenhower, the Colonel's dog.
    • Brooke publicly humiliating Mindy in the forest out of pure spite. Her fate afterwards was totally deserved.
Brooke: Poor Mindy. What did you think? The cool kids saw something special in you and invited you to your first party, where you'd sip your first beer and finally suck face for the first time? Newsflash, you're not special. Fuck with the queen bee, and you're gonna get stung.
  • Killed Off for Real: Colonel Stars-and-Stripes, played by Jim Carrey. Bet you didn't see that coming, unless of course, you've read the comic book, in which case it is a Foregone Conclusion.
  • Laser-Guided Karma:
    • Brooke gets hit with the "Sick Stick" by Mindy.
    • Chris gets mauled by the sharks he was planning to use against Dave himself.
  • Last-Minute Hookup: After several people believing that Mindy and Dave were in a relationship, at the end of the film Mindy kisses Dave before leaving New York.
  • Leaning on the Fourth Wall: As part of the film's comic-motif and This Is Reality theme, Dave tries to talk some sense into The Motherfucker by saying that there won't be a sequel if he dies. The film is unlikely to receive a sequel.
  • Legion of Doom: Purposefully invoked by the Motherfucker, who recruits the toughest crooks he can find and gives them supervillain names and costumes.
  • Lemming Cops: The police units just keep coming to get killed by Mother Russia one by one while Motherfucker tries to rape Miranda, without any kind of normal police procedure for an armed and dangerous criminal, such as setting up a perimeter and keeping out of her immediate reach.
  • Lighter and Softer: A rather odd example in two cases.
    • The film is much more toned down from the comics as both the filmmakers and even Chris D'Amico's actor were opposed to doing a straight adaptation. Case in point, the comic features Motherfucker raping Katie, shooting several children, killing Colonel Stars-and-Stripes' dog and placing the head on the Colonel's corpse, and outright bombing every comic book shop in New York, none of which occurs in the film. The ending alone sees Kick-Ass, Battle Guy and Ass-Kicker wanted and Hit-Girl arrested for being vigilantes, with Marcus being arrested for knowingly sheltering a vigilante; and Motherfucker thrown from a building and in a broken mess in an alley as opposed to the film having Kick-Ass resolving to become the hero New York needs, Hit-Girl kissing Dave then leaving New York to avoid being sent to prison, and Motherfucker being comically eaten by his shark.
    • It cuts back on the swears and violence of the first movie as well. There's less emphasis on gore and scenes of murder are mercifully cut short. Though there is a certain gross out scene you should watch out for if you're squeamish.
  • Making Love in All the Wrong Places: Kick-Ass and Night Bitch have sex in the bathroom — twice.
  • Male Gaze: Night Bitch's costume shows a substantial amount of cleavage. Mother Russia's costume has about the same coverage of a bikini. Topless female extras appear in one scene. The Toxic Mega Cunts watch a stripper perform in their VIP section.
  • Mentor Occupational Hazard: Colonel Stars-and-Stripes.
  • Mistaken for Masturbating: Dave's father thinks he's doing this when he's trying to put his long-unused Kick-Ass costume on since the zipper's stuck and he attempts to jiggle it up and down.
  • Mistaken for Pedophile: Happens to David after he starts hanging out with Mindy more.
  • Moral Myopia: Katie is furious when she thinks Dave is cheating on her with Mindy and dumps him, despite the fact that she has been cheating on him for some time herself, which she shows no remorse for.
  • Mother Russia Makes You Strong: Mother Russia herself's the most formidable of D'Amico's henchmen, and kills cops to a rock remix of the Tetris theme.
  • Ms. Fanservice: Claudia Lee (Brooke), despite only being 16 at the time of filmingnote .
  • Mythology Gag:
    • A few, with the most notable being Kick-Ass' costume for the final fight (armoured with Big Daddy's armour) looking almost identical to the costume of hero Silver Beetle from Hit-Girl.
    • Another one from Hit-Girl: in the midquel, Hit-Girl dismisses Night Bitch as a serious superhero because her costume shows too much skin, and dismisses the superhero Tarantula for publishing his own secret identity on Facebook. Here, Night Bitch is Hit-Girl's rival in love (and Hit-Girl wondered if hers was a superhero codename or the title of a porn movie), and the Toxic Mega Cunts visit her at home, attempt to rape her and beat her to a pulp due her bright idea of saying on her personal Facebook page she was in a relationship with Kick-Ass, thus allowing The Motherfucker to confirm her superhero identity.
  • Nice Job Fixing It, Villain:
    • Mother Russia injecting Hit-Girl with adrenaline, which then gives her the energy to kill Mother Russia. Mother Russia thought it was poison.
    • Also, Uncle Ralph forcing Chris to listen as Javier is murdered. His (eerily calm) response? "Thank you for that. I needed that to get through what comes next."
    • The Motherfucker attacking Dave at his dad's funeral. Dave at that point wants to quit being Kick-Ass. This not only gets him back, but brings Hit-Girl back too.
  • Never Trust a Trailer: Mindy never says "Take your tampon out, Dave" in the film.
  • Nobody Poops: Defied in a very graphic way (see Vomit Indiscretion Shot below).
  • Not Hyperbole:
    • Hit-Girl claims to be able to kill a man with his own finger. During the final fight, she shows she wasn't kidding.
    • She also says she'll cut off a mook's hand if he breaks his promise to give up crime; she wasn't kidding on that one either.
    • Later she says she'll feed a guy his own dick and we never see him again afterwards.
  • Not What It Looks Like: Dave and Mindy have an unfortunately timed and worded conversation about her departure from vigilantism in the middle of a crowded hallway at school.
  • Off with His Head!: Mother Russia does this to Colonel Stars-and-Stripes with a machete, who had already been fatally wounded by her.
  • One-Man Army: Mother Russia. There's good reason she's the highest paid of The Motherfucker's gang.
Genghis Carnage: $50,000? She's worth it!
  • One-Steve Limit: Referenced in-universe by Javier when Motherfucker gave Olga the name Mother Russia. Ultimately subverted when Motherfucker decided to keep her name intact, resulting in two "Mother"s in their team.
  • Only in It for the Money: Subverted. Though it's the reason why most people join The Toxic Mega Cunts in the beginning, they all have way too much fun doing it to say it's true. Mother Russia gets paid more than the others ($50,000 a week plus expenses) but she certainly earns it.
  • Outside Ride: Mindy atop the villains' van while she tries to rescue Dave.
  • Pimp Duds: Mindy has Dave dress up in garb that's certain to attract muggers. She has him don a flashy, all-white suit, fur-coat and hat and carry around several bags full of expensive-looking items.
Dave: I am the whitest pimp ever.
  • Police Are Useless: It's hard to really empathize with Marcus' desire to see Mindy lead a normal life when you realize just how useless the police are. They're either completely corrupted or just plain incompetent. By taking Hit-Girl off the streets, he's indirectly responsible for several deaths.
  • Politically Incorrect Villain: The Motherfucker is an unapologetic racist and sexist. Though he might have deliberately gone out of his way to be that way in order to be more "evil."
  • Posthumous Character:
    • Big Daddy, after his death in the first movie. Sure, he never shows up, but there's lots of lingering shots of his portrait, and his armor. In the final fight, Kick-Ass wears Big Daddy's armor.
    • Frank D'Amico, while being dead as well, is also shown in a portrait and his son Chris's desire to avenge D'Amico is what leads to Chris becoming The Motherfucker to begin with.
  • Pre Ass Kicking One Liner: Hit-Girl as she makes her Dynamic Entry to save Dave after the funeral by jumping on top of the van he had just been kidnapped in.
    Hit-Girl: Game on, cocksuckers.
  • Pre-Mortem One-Liner: Mother Russia after two cops report eight men down:
    Mother Russia: Make that ten.
  • Product Placement:
    • Midway through the film, Mindy is forced to watch a large portion of Union J's music video, a British boy band who had yet to release their debut album and were only known for coming from the same TV show as One Direction.
    • Dr. Gravity orders a diet Mountain Dew and racks of different flavors of Dew can be seen in the cooler when The Motherfucker robs a convenience store.
  • Psycho for Hire: Exploited by The Motherfucker, who recruits sadists and violent criminals for his Legion of Doom.
  • Psychopathic Manchild: Chris D'Amico / The Motherfucker.
  • Ragtag Bunch of Misfits: Justice Forever are quite a motley crew, mostly composed of hero wannabes with big psychological problems.
  • Rape Is a Special Kind of Evil: Subverted. Sure, Motherfucker tries to rape Night Bitch, but he can't get an erection. Cue a few seconds of awkwardly masturbating into his cape, before just giving up entirely.
  • Real Men Love Jesus: The badass Col. Stars-and-Stripes is a born-again Christian.
  • Real Life Writes the Plot: Because Lyndsy Fonseca was busy filming Nikita, she was demoted to extra after being the lead love interest in the previous film, appearing in just a couple brief scenes, one of which where she dumps Dave. Her character is also changed to be completely unsympathetic (in sharp contrast to her sweet persona in the first film), so audiences (and Dave) don't miss her absence (or at least notice the sudden change too).
  • Relationship Upgrade: Kick-Ass and Hit-Girl. Maybe. It's left rather vague.
  • Religious Bruiser: Colonel Stars-and-Stripes is a former Mafia enforcer who became a born-again Christian and superhero. He now goes after the kind of people he once worked for.
  • Sacrificial Lion:
    • Colonel Stars-and-Stripes. Also, perhaps, Dave's dad.
    • Also, on the villains' side, Javier.
  • Save the Villain: Kick-Ass tries to save Motherfucker from falling through a glass roof. He swats away his hand, to die a martyr, and plummets to his... shark tank. Then he finds out the shark's very much alive.
  • School Grade Hacking: Mindy hacks the school to give herself perfect attendance so she could cut class and train as Hit Girl every day. It finally backfires when she's not there to receive her Perfect Attendance Award and her father is called.
  • Self-Made Orphan: Chris D'Amico (albeit by accident).
  • Sequel Escalation: Instead of just three, now there are dozens of real-world superheroes and supervillains running around.
  • Sequel Hook: Mindy on the run from the police, but clearly intending to continue being Hit-Girl; Dave continuing to train himself while also donning a new Kick-Ass mask; Uncle Ralph being teased as a future villain and Chris/Motherfucker surviving the shark attack.
  • Sexual Karma: Kick-Ass and Night Bitch are shown to have pleasurable sex, contrast this with the Motherfucker who's impotent and can't even rape Night Bitch. And at the end the Motherfucker suffers a Crippling Castration.
  • Ship Tease: The entire movie is this for Mindy and Dave. But with Mindy being forced to leave the city at the end after kissing Dave, their future status is unknown.
  • Shout-Out: The "sick stick" from Minority Report.
  • Slow-Motion Fall: Done with the Motherfucker falling into the water tank.
  • Soft Water: The Motherfucker survives a fall from a warehouse roof by landing in a water tank. The shark in the tank, however, is hungry.
  • Spared by the Adaptation:
    • Eisenhower, Colonel Stars-and-Stripes' dog.
    • Katie's parents, who died in the same scene as the Motherfucker's Adapted Out rape of Katie.
  • Stop, or I Will Shoot!: Subverted. Colonel Stars-and-Stripes holds Mother Russia at gunpoint with his unloaded Smith & Wesson 5946 when The Toxic Mega Cunts ambush the Colonel while he's at the Justice Forever HQ. However, Mother Russia manages to take his gun away and tries to shoot him with it. She discovers that the gun is empty,(the Colonel never carris it loaded, for safety reasons) so she stabs him from behind with her machete before snapping his neck and decapitating him.
  • Stripperiffic: Night Bitch's costume is definitely intended to attract attention.
  • Super Registration Act: After a series of violent crimes by The Motherfucker and his gang, the police start rounding up all costumed vigilantes.
  • Superhero Paradox: Dave's big dilemma in this movie: he spends a lot of it deciding whether the superhero wave he created is better or worse for the city. In the end, the superheroes disband and become plain-clothes heroes, with the exceptions of Kick-Ass himself and Hit-Girl, while Hit-Girl's on the run from the police.
  • Supervillain Lair: The Motherfucker builds one for himself, complete with a shark tank and pole dancers.
  • Surprisingly Realistic Outcome : Much in keeping with the comic book, the movie highlights why exactly superheroes don't exist in real life. Turns out the police don't much appreciate vigilantes trying to do their jobs for them. Also, a domino mask is a terrible disguise, as Nightbitch found out to her dismay. The Motherfucker is able to track her down via "not-facebook" once he saw a picture of her real face.
  • Swear Jar: Marcus has taken to using one on Mindy. She's even using bills instead of coins. In the first scene we see it, she's already filled it, and comments he'll need a bigger jar. Later in the movie, we see a second jar has been added. That one is full too.
  • Take That!:
    • Hit-Girl's taunt about homophobic slurs making a thug sound really gay is a pretty obvious jab at Mark Millar's dialogue from the comic series.
    • The Motherfucker's refusal to kill Col. Stars-and-Stripes' dog in the movie version (whereas he did in the comic series) is another jab at what's perceived as Mark Miller's tendency to use needless cruelty in his comics solely for the sake of shock value.
  • Taking Up the Mantle: In the last battle, Kick-Ass wears the body armor from Big Daddy's suit and in the end he also inherits Hit-Girl's base including its arsenal.
  • Tender Tomboyishness, Foul Femininity: Downplayed. Though violent and trigger-happy, Mindy is a decent person at heart and is one of the main heroes. Brooke, on the other hand, is a spiteful Alpha Bitch with absolutely no redeeming qualities.
  • Time Skip: Mindy and Dave are now 15 and 18 (nearly 19) respectively — due to Chloë Grace Moretz' obvious aging between films.
  • Too Dumb to Live: The leader of the muggers. After he and his group receive a major ass kicking from Hit-Girl, she offers to let him go if he promises to no longer mug people, otherwise she'd "go Saudi Arabia on your ass" and cut off one of his hands. He seemingly swears to, until he goes for his knife, at which his hand is then swiftly severed.
  • Took a Level in Badass: Dave's much more competent in this film than the last. Marty and Todd also become superheroes.
  • Took a Level in Jerkass:
    • Katie. However, this does have the benefit of putting her in-line with her comic counterpart's personality; her quick disassociation with Dave probably helps spare her from her fate from the comics.
    • Dave took a level or two himself, but he mercifully snaps out of it towards the end.
  • This Is Reality: It's a recurring theme throughout the movie. Dave's father tells him that "this is the real world" and there are real consequences and responsibilities to being a costumed vigilante. Before the final fight, Mindy tells Dave that "this is not a comic book," which Dave echoes to The Motherfucker when he is dangling over a pit, trying to slip out of Dave's hand and kill himself.
  • Tranquil Fury: When Mindy pays the mean girls back for humiliating her.
  • Tritagonist: The film follows Dave, Mindy, and Chris's storylines concurrently with roughly even focus before they collide for the finale.
  • Villain Forgot to Level Grind: In their first fight, Dave and Chris were evenly matched and performed a mutual KO. Dave's damaged nerve endings were the only reason he was able to help Mindy turn the tables on Frank. In their second fight Chris is clearly outmatched, reduced to throwing mooks at Dave and trying to take him by surprise once he realizes this.
  • Vomit Indiscretion Shot: The effects of the "sick stick", a device that induces severe vomiting and diarrhea, are shown in the most graphic way possible.
  • Wall Bang Her: Kick-Ass and Night Bitch have sex in a bathroom stall.
  • Wearing a Flag on Your Head: Eisenhower wears an American flag print mask.
  • Will They or Won't They?: The movie strings this in unexpectedly; from everyone thinking Dave and Mindy had been having a fling, to Mindy showing up in Dave's bedroom and crying on his shoulder, to Mindy reacting to Dave having his shirt off until finally resolving at the end of the film.
  • Wimp Fight: Not even training by the "Ice Man" Chuck Liddell can keep Chris from flopping around like an idiot.
  • You Killed My Father: Kick-Ass and The Motherfucker exchange this trope.
Kick-Ass: You're gonna pay for what you did to my dad.
Motherfucker: Your dad? You blew up mine with a bazooka.
