Old Complete Monster cleanup thread

Welcome to the Complete Monster proposal thread! This is the thread where new Complete Monster examples are vetted, approved, and written up. If you're looking for the general cleanup thread (for cuts, rewrites, expansions, and the like), please go here

Important: Before suggesting any new examples, please read the Frequently Asked Questions and Common Requests List; if you have any questions, the odds are high they are answered there. Additionally, please check here for the earliest date a work can be discussed (usually two weeks from the U.S. release date) and whether the work has already been reserved by another user.

Here is how the process works:

    Process

  1. If you have a candidate to propose, you can simply come right in and propose them! If the character's run is brief, such as a single issue of a comic book, then a simple summary of their actions and any potential redeeming qualities will be enough; for longer-running candidates, an effortpost (EP) might be helpful for organizing the proposal. An EP is not outright required, but please be mindful that if a post becomes too clunky and unorganized, it can be very hard for other people to follow.

  2. After the proposal, there will be a 72-hour discussion and voting period, where people may ask questions and vote on the candidate. The number of upvotes must outnumber the downvotes by at least five for the character to be considered "approved".

  3. Three days after the proposal has been made, if the character has been approved, you may post the writeup (the text to be posted on the trope page itself) on the thread and send it to the drafts page. Your candidate will soon be added to the CM subpage. If the work has a page, you should add your candidate to the relevant YMMV page. Voila! It's that simple!

Outside of this process, we do have a few ground rules:

    Ground Rules

  1. To keep the thread moving at a reasonable pace, there are some restrictions on when a proposal can be made. There should only be a maximum of four EPs posted both per page and per hour to ensure that nothing gets lost in the shuffle; additionally, each individual troper should only be proposing or writing up characters from a maximum of three works at a time (from initial proposals to end of their voting period). If your proposal would fall outside of either of these guidelines, we'd like to ask you to please wait until they would fit within; feel free to type them up on an outside document, and then when the time comes, you can just copy, paste, and post!

  2. No plagiarism of any kind. This is a very serious matter site-wide, as the website could get in actual legal trouble over this; as a result, this can very quickly lead to mod intervention. This can take many different forms:
    1. Direct plagiarism, i.e. wholesale copying. This is not only the easiest to find, but is also the most likely to warrant quick moderator intervention. To be clear, quoting in some places is perfectly acceptable, but it has to be very clear you're quoting from something else and it cannot be anything longer than a sentence or two - if you're quoting an entire work summary from Wikipedia, no one is going to believe you've actually consumed the work, so even if you cite your source, your candidate will be downvoted anyway.
    2. Self-plagiarism. Even if you can prove that you wrote the same text in both places, the site itself can't contain any of the duplicated text. If you already wrote something once before, it's not too hard to write it a second time.
    3. Using another site's work as a template for a proposal. Just because you don't copy and paste something directly doesn't mean it's any harder to detect if you're basing parts or all of your proposal on text someone else wrote. To be clear, this doesn't violate site rules and won't lead to mod intervention, but just like if you directly plagiarize, no one will believe you've consumed the work if you're clearly basing your proposal on something else. This thread largely operates on the honor system, and tweaking someone else's work to pass it off as your own is one of the fastest ways to lose trust.

  3. Votes must be for specific candidates, meaning no blanket voting (i.e. "yes to everyone I missed").

  4. If you are the first person to downvote a candidate, please provide an explanation of why when you do so. We're here for discussions above all, and a hit-and-run downvote doesn't facilitate anything.

  5. If a work is already reserved by another user, please don't comment on the work or any potential characters worth discussion before the discussion date. We know how exciting it is when a work has a keeper that you're waiting to talk about, but it's not fair to the person who reserved the work who is just as excited to lead the discussion to see the discussion getting spoiled before they get to do it. On the other hand, if the reservation only has one name attached, shoot them a PM - they may be down for a collaboration, which will get you in on the fun as well!

  6. Please keep the thread on-topic. While discussing the trope is fun and we encourage people to enjoy it, questions like "who's your favorite CM" are off-topic and can lead to thumps. That's the kind of question to take to people's PMs if they're willing. Similarly, while we encourage friendliness and familiarity with other users, posts should always have some kind of thread-relevant purpose; for instance, if you want to wish someone a happy birthday, feel free to, but if it's the only thing in the post, it's off-topic and needs something else alongside it. Again, though, while we strive for a friendly atmosphere, this is not Facebook; life updates are fun, but unless they have some kind of impact on your thread participation, please do not bring it here - we have Yack Fest for that.

  7. Please refrain from asking anything along the lines of "How Did We Miss This One?" In almost every case, the answer is simply "No one thought about it before". This Is a Wiki where everyone has different interests, and the fact that people missed a particular candidate, even one that seems like a textbook example of a trope or a character who is particularly iconic in pop culture, means absolutely nothing. The question is disruptive, has a simple and consistent answer, and provides nothing to any discussion.

  8. If you are suspended from parts of the website, it is still possible to participate!
    1. For users who are suspended from editing the wiki, you still have full access to this thread. You can propose candidates and write them up with no issues whatsoever; while you will have to ask someone else to post the entry to the relevant pages once it is done, all write-ups are considered thread-approved - as in, done by consensus - and thus doing so does not violate any rules regarding meatpuppeting.
    2. If you are suspended from the forums, your participation is limited but not impossible. It is still possible for a forum-suspended user to assist in creating the write-up for a character who has already been approved; as previously mentioned, write-ups are inherently considered a consensus-based edit and thus not tied to any one particular user. However, you can not assist in the proposal of a character; as a proposal is based around the forum rather than the wiki, doing so with a forum suspension qualifies as meatpuppeting.

  9. Please keep all discussions "in-house".
    1. What other wikis use for CM equivalents is irrelevant here.
    2. Please be wary of using other wikis, Fandom or otherwise, as sources of information. They are just as fallible as a site like Wikipedia in regards to accuracy because they can be edited by any user, just as this site can.
    3. Do not attempt to force a communication with an author in an attempt to gather evidence or settle a debate; besides the fact that this is a YMMV trope and thus author intent has variable weight depending on the circumstance, doing so may cross the line into drama exportation, which is prohibited site-wide.

If you would like to use an EP for your candidate, here's the general format. This format does not have to be followed exactly, but these are the main topics that need to be covered:

    Effortpost Template

What is the work?

This is a brief summary of the work you're going to discuss. We don't need a full plot summary here, just however much we need to understand going into the discussion — it can even be as simple as quoting the summary on the work's page.

Who is the candidate and what have they done?

This is essentially the character's biography — who they are, their story, the crimes they commit, and, preferably (though not required), what happens to the candidate at the end. It does not have to include every single thing they ever do — for some villains, we'd be here all day if that was the case — but it should include the highlights of their journey.

Any redeeming qualities? Freudian Excuse?

This is where any potential redeeming characteristics or tragic backstory should be discussed. Do they have a tragic past? Do they show that Even Evil Has Standards or Even Evil Has Loved Ones? Maybe a Pet the Dog moment or two? This is where these should be discussed in full. Not every potential redeeming moment is a clear-cut disqualifier, but we should hear of any potential issues to ensure the character is discussed in full.

Are they bad enough?

A Complete Monster has to be particularly vile by the standard of the work they appear in. Therefore, you should look at what the character does compared to similar characters in the same work. This takes into account things like:

  • Their resource level (a human Serial Killer can't stand up to an alien Omnicidal Maniac, but they can be bad by the standard of other human serial killers)
  • The amount of time they have to work with (such as a one-shot character versus long-running antagonists)
  • The quantity vs. quality of their crimes compared to others (someone with a lower victim count but far more visceral and personal crimes could be considered as equally bad overall as someone with a higher body count but less horror involved)

Essentially, this section is an analysis of the kinds of villainy shown in the work and an explanation of why this particular character's villainy stands out within it.

Final verdict?

This is where you post your final conclusion on the character in question. You can continue elaborating on your reasons or even just say a simple "yes" or "no"; at this point, we've heard everything we need to hear.

IMPORTANT NOTICE: This thread tackles very serious and dark matters on a daily basis. We will be discussing things like murder, rape, torture, human trafficking, crimes against children, and in particularly dark cases, several of these issues at the same time. We keep a lighthearted air, but all candidates carry the general assumption that these are awful individuals committing disgusting crimes. We ask that if you participate, you do so with the requisite seriousness such dark topics require; exclamations of how gross something is, whether serious or sarcastic, are disrespectful to the topics at hand, and if you cannot handle such topics, please do not participate.

And that's everything you need to know. Welcome to the thread!

Here's the other candidate I'd say I would do later.

What is the work?

Animator vs. Animation is, as per my last effort post, a YouTube series about a set of stick figures having misadventures in the internet. Today we're looking at two episodes from the Animation vs. Minecraft Shorts spin-off.

Who is the candidate and what have they done?

In a crossover with the famous Lucky Block Minecraft mod, the villain of the "Lucky Blocks" and "Lucky Block Staff" episodes is a Canon Foreigner in the form of a orb of light that has total dominion over the dimension inside the Lucky Blocks. It at first appears as a seemingly inanimate object that Yellow steals for himself so he can spawn some items for his friends so they'd have a cool time.... until the Orb suddenly throws itself at Yellow's head, booting his spirit out of his body and trapping it in a prison outside the PC. The Orb-haunted Yellow gets up and starts trying to kill the remaining members of the Stick Gang. Fortunately, Yellow's ghost finds a way to access the Lucky Dimension, so he starts sending items to help his friends.

The Orb spawns more mobs to kill the Stick Gang, before slowly cloning itself, causing the remaining members to also be possessed. This culminates in Red being the last one left: With the help of his ghostly friends, he has one final Last Stand, but ultimately loses; Before being possessed, he spawns a pig, which is then given several upgrades by the ghost-sticks. The pig barely manages to stop the Orb, throwing it out of Yellow's body and back into its temple, causing all its effects to be undone.

A few years and two seasons later, the Stick Gang experiments with the staff they got after the conflict with King Orange. Despite everyone's protests, Red equips a Lucky Block onto the staff and begins experimenting with it, giving the Orb an opportunity to make its return by possessing the staff. While it seems like Yellow defeated it, the Orb quickly sucks everyone into the Lucky Dimension and forces them to climb up an entire tower while sending hundreds of minions to kill them. Once they manage to Five-Men Army their way through them, they confront the Orb in its One-Winged Angel form, where it ultimately defeats them by trapping them in bedrock, seemingly being fine with letting them rot there. Thankfully, Red has one last trick up his sleeve; A beehive with a certain bee-creeper hybrid inside it. The little sacrifices his life by exploding, destroying the Lucky Block Staff and freeing the Stick Gang from their prisons. The Orb is last seen falling off its tower, probably not dead, but who knows?

Any redeeming qualities? Freudian Excuse?

Its character folder lists it as Ambiguously Evil, but I doubt that heavily. True, it only comes to life once messed with, but nothing says it wants to make the Stick Gang learn a lesson about messing with powers they control; the thing seems to lack sentience as long as it stays in its temple, so it might as well be because the Stick Gang are giving it opportunities to break free and spread chaos like it wants to; its body language as Yellow does paint as sadistic and prideful over its abilities, enjoying its actions.

That's the only issue I can think of; No reason to assume it's Made of Evil, no redeeming qualities or sympathetic backstories, etc.

Are they bad enough?

The Orb puts the Stick Gang in And I Must Scream fates of its own; it hijacks their bodies while their spirits are trapped in a prison, Forced to Watch as their body rampages, killing or assimilating their loved ones. If not for the loophole of the spirits maintaining their inventories, letting Yellow make a way into the Lucky Dimension, the Stick Gang would've been either dead or watching their bodies cause chaos all over the place. Even outside of this, it caused Beeper's Heroic Sacrifice, killed several of its minions during "Lucky Blocks" and send dozens of them to their deaths in "Lucky Block Staff". So yeah, pretty bad dude.

While the Witch does have a similar theme to the Orb, I think neither of them outheinouses the other and they're both able to stand out. Their And I Must Scream fates are different enough from each other to both be heinous on its own, and they have their own unique things, such as the Witch's brutal murder methods or the Orb actually gathering a kill count. (Additionally, while this isn't about the Orb, the Witch has lower resources so it doesn't outheinous her).

Speaking of resources, it is true the Orb is a Digital Abomination with the Power of Creation, so it could have possibly done worse; however, I defend it in the form that it simply never got the opportunity to do so. Both times it was freed, it was for less than ten minutes and the Stick Gang was distracting it from doing something else; it simply never had the opportunity to cause more widespread chaos, so I don't think it's an argument for the Orb failing the Heinous Standards.

Final verdict?

I think they are a somewhat-solid [tup] all things considered.

The work

We all know the Alex Rider books, which is basically "Teenage James Bond". We also know about the crappy movie adaptation of the first book Stormbreaker, but did you know it also had a crappy DS game, Alex Rider: Stormbreaker ?

Alex Rider is a Teen Superspy, who after the death of his uncle Ian Rider, who was secretly an MI6 agent, who died investigating wealthy businessman Darrius Sayle, who is about to give every school in Britain a free Stormbreaker, a new computer he invented.

Only it turns out Sayle has more sinister intentions behind Stormbreaker.

Who is Darrius Sayle and what has he done

Darrius Sayle immigrated to Britain at a young age and was bullied for that, with him being called Darrius Smell, with one of his bullies growing up to be the Prime Minister, Sayle did not take this well and gained a vendetta against both the Prime Minister and British school children as a whole.

Sayle then began working with a mysterious organization (clearly Scorpia but they're not named) and began infusing his Stormbreakers with a virus, not a computer virus but an actual virus, and announced that he was going to give a Stormbreaker to every school in the country.

MI6 found this suspicious and sent Ian to investigate, and when he learned the truth he tried to escape and Sayle had assassin Yassen Gregorivich kill him before he could.

MI6 sends Alex in under the cover of Kevin Blake, a contest winner who gets to come to Sayle's mansion and try out a Stormbreaker.

Alex investigates Sayle and eventually sees with Yassen, who he has execute one of his men for dropping a box, before Sayle discovers who Alex truly is and has Alex captured.

Sayle reveals that he's going to have the Prime Minister press the button to activate the Stormbreakers, which will unleash a deadly virus into every school in the country, before he has his minions drop Alex into a fish tank with a deadly Portuguese man of war while he flies off to London for his plan.

Alex escapes and manages to stop the Prime Minister from pressing the button and gets security to stop Sayle from pressing it himself, before Sayle escapes and head to his skyscraper Sayle tower. There Sayle has a second transmitter to activate the Stormbreakers on the roof.

Alex manages to disconnect the transmitter before Sayle can activate it, so Sayle tries to kill Alex and reconnect it before Alex beats him and Yassen comes in and shoots Sayle, causing him to plummet off the tower as Scorpia had deemed him embarrassment.

Mitigating qualities

Uh no, he was bullied as a kid so he decides to murder all the children in Britain as retaliation, it's not even mentioned that the bullying was severe in anyway, it was mostly just name calling.

Heinousness

This a stand alone, so he has no competition, and the game does spell out that Sayle will be unleashing a deadly virus across every school in entire country, so no problem there.

Conclsuion

I'd be for an Alex Rider page, we have 3 quote options, personally I prefer the Razim quote

Darius Sayle: Revenge can be good, because in a few hours, at the science museum, my old friend the Prime Minister, he's gonna press a button and you know what's gonna happen? That button's gonna connect all the Stormbreakers on my wireless network. And at the same moment, it's gonna release a virus straight into the classes packed with British schoolchildren.
Alex Rider: You're going to kill thousands of innocent people.
Darius Sayle: Oh, no. Of course not. I'm gonna kill millions.

"The Stormbreakers are armed and ready. And yes, you're right, Alex. Each one contains what you might call a computer virus. But that, if you like, is my little April Fools' joke. Because the virus I'm talking about is a form of smallpox. Of course, Alex, it's been genetically modified to make it faster and stronger... more lethal. A spoonful of the stuff would destroy a city. And my Stormbreakers hold much, much more than that. At the moment it's isolated, quite safe. But this afternoon there's going to be a bit of a party at the Science Museum. Every school in England will be joining in, with the schoolchildren gathered around their nice, new shiny computers. And at midday, on the stroke of twelve, my old friend, the Prime Minister, will make one of his smug, self-serving speeches and then he'll press a button. He thinks he'll be activating the computers, and in a way, he's right. Pressing the button will release the virus, and by midnight tonight, there will be no schoolchildren in England and the Prime Minister will weep as he remembers the day he first bullied Herod Sayle!"
Herod Sayle describing his master plan to Alex Rider, Alex Rider: Stormbreaker

"I have made it my life's work to study pain in all its different forms, and the pain that I intend to inflict on you will be perhaps even worse. There are two instruments that I am going to use. Earlier today, I promised you hell. And now, my dear child, it is here."
Razim to Alex Rider, Alex Rider: Scorpia Rising

Special thanks to Ravok (once again) for letting me tackle this one.

What’s the Work?

"Bumblebee" is an early short story by thread favorite Bentley Little.

Starring a nameless detective in Arizona, our narrator deals with a slew of racist murders while uncovering the final words of his dead friend Trinidad: "Bumblebee". Turns out, it's the name of a nearby ghost town with a dark past (and apparently it's a real place).

But most of this can all be linked back to this asshole.

Who is He?

The redneck (he's never given a name) is a racist psychopath and vicious murderer who kills anybody he believes to be an illegal immigrant.

What has he done?

Having been responsible for a series of racially-charged murders, like burning 14 illegals alive in a semi-truck, the redneck's politically charged crimes have earned him affection from the town's police department, who refuse to arrest him. With the narrator being hired by Father Lopez to gather enough evidence to get the redneck behind bars before he could slaughter all the Salvadoran refugees hiding in the church’s basement, the redneck took to mortally wounding the narrator’s friend Trinidad and left him on the side of the road to die as a way to scare him off. The redneck even goes so far as to murder Father Lopez himself, leaving his body behind at the front of the church as he attempts to make a getaway.

The narrator eventually learns the true extent of the redneck’s nature when his friend Julio reveals that he and a couple of others have finally captured the redneck in the ghost town Bumblebee’s church. Inside, the narrator notices an entire graveyard of undead immigrants beside their still-living families, all of whom being victims of the redneck’s violent hatred. With the redneck tied up, hung up, and completely naked while crying and pissing himself, the undead immigrants take turns slowly killing him as revenge, their torture of the redneck so grave that not even the narrator’s willing to look inside and see his remains.

Redeeming Qualities?

Zilch. While the narrator feels bad for the redneck's fate of being slowly tortured to death, since he believes nobody should have to go through that, even he knows that the redneck feels sad not because he regrets what he's done, but because he was caught and now has to deal with the consequences of his actions. Hell, the only lines of dialogue he has are when he briefly escapes his punishment and tries to shoot the zombie immigrants, as if all he really cares about is killing people.

Heinousness?

Easily the worst in the story, with his murders so brutal and a bodycount so big, it could fill an entire graveyard.

Conclusion

Easy keep
