Old Magnificent Bastard thread
Welcome to the Magnificent Bastard (MB) cleanup thread! This thread is where we clean up or cut already-existing entries.
If you're looking to add new entries, please see the approval thread.
IMPORTANT: Before you begin any discussions on this thread, please see the Frequently Asked Questions and Common Requests List
Here, you'll find explanations of the criteria for the trope as well as our rules/procedures for approving and cutting candidates.
What goes through this thread?
- Cut requests. If you believe a MB has been approved and they do not count, this thread is where you propose their removal. To know how to go about this, please see the FAQ folder on the Administrivia page, where the process is explained in detail.
- If we ever need to consider cutting multiple examples without individually reviewing them (e.g. if we discover widespread plagiarism with a particular troper's MBs), the initial discussion will be on this thread and we'll then escalate to the mod team (as described here) to get a formal consensus if we decide to recommend a mass cut.
- If an entry was put on the wrong subpage/YMMV page, you may propose where they should be moved to.
- Full rewrites of existing entries, including expansions, trims, and ground-up rewrites. If your rewrite is approved by the thread, feel free to add it to the drafts page so that other users can check grammar and the like before it is included with the rest of the weekly swaps.
- If an entry on a work's YMMV page doesn't match the entry on the media subpage, you can bring it here to discuss which entry works better.
What does not go through this thread?
- New candidate proposals - as stated before, those are done on this thread.
- Unapproved wicks - if a Troper encounters either of these kinds of wicks, they can be cut with no approval.
- Any MB link on a non-YMMV page - as a YMMV trope, it should not be linked on those pages regardless of any cleanup effort. The only exception is if the wick is being used within the definition of another trope.
- If an MB link on a YMMV page refers to an unapproved character. If it refers to an approved character on any such page, the wick can stay. On the other hand, if the unapproved character being linked to sounds like they might have promise (and you don't feel like checking it out for yourself), feel free to mention it on the approval thread - someone may already know why they don't count, or it could invite a brand new discussion!
- Proposals for images, quotes, and videos of already-approved MBs - quotes and images are proposed on the approval thread, while videos can be uploaded normally as they are screened for approval by the moderation.
- Crosswicking examples to YMMV pages - if an example has already been approved and added to the main page, you do not require any special permission to add the example to a work's YMMV page (assuming the work has a page already). If a YMMV page doesn't exist yet, then you can make it yourself, but either way, feel free to just add the example without asking.
- Small changes to existing entries - these can simply be done on a Troper's own prerogative with no approval.
- Spelling and grammar fixes.
- Pothole changes.
- Minor rewordings.
- Spoiler tags.
While these changes do not require any kind of approval, it is requested that should you make any of these changes, you do one of the following:
- Make the same changes on the relevant Sandbox page, then add the Sandbox to the list at the bottom of the drafts page. This will add the Sandbox to the weekly swaps and ensure that the edits end up on the relevant locked page. If the Sandbox is already listed, then once you make the edits, your job is already done!
- If you don't know how the Sandboxes work or simply don't have the time to find it, then you can simply post on the thread about the changes you made. Someone else can then make the edit on the relevant Sandbox and add it to the weekly swaps.
- Alternatively, you can simply request that the change be made directly to the locked page on the Locked Pages thread. Members of this thread keep track of that one, so we will ensure that the changes are made in the Sandbox so that it doesn't get deleted during the next swap.
Again, these changes don't require any approval, but we prefer to keep the entries on the YMMV pages and the locked pages the same in order to avoid any miscommunication or errors between entries, so if you do make the change, we would greatly appreciate it if you could ensure the change is made on the locked page as well.
As a final note, we do not care what other sites have to say regarding whether or not a character counts. We have our own criteria and they have theirs for their MB equivalents; while they are similar, they are not exactly the same and should not be treated as such. Another site removing a character from their equivalent should not be a reason why a cut is proposed here, and if this is the case, it will likely lead to mod intervention.
Other than this, once again, welcome to the cleanup thread, and we look forward to your contributions!

TroperWall / WikiMagic CleanupThe final Red vs. Blue installment just came out, so I'm going to go ahead and reserve it.
Quick note on Hellsing:
- Walter C. Dornez, the Angel of Death, is the true mole in Hellsing for Millennium. A brilliant soldier since World War II, Walter feared losing his strength and being forgotten in old age while also desiring to give Alucard the death he deserved. Both betraying Hellsing to Millennium and coordinating his and Seras's counterattack, Walter is the one who allowed Integra to awaken Alucard and allows himself to be turned into a vampire. Facing Alucard and nearly killing him in his weakened state, Walter is left hollow upon Alucard's seeming death and instead decides to put an end to Millennium. Trapping the Nazi Doctor, Walter kills him and destroys the source of Millennium's vampires, passing away with a final tribute to Integra and remarking on his desire to give Alucard the death his friend desired, more graceful even than his brilliant manga original counterpart.
Double checking the manga it's the same as the OVA. We cool if he just gets bumped under Integra and on a formatting note did we wanna keep Pip where he is or slate him beneath Walter? I know he's a smaller character than Anderson but there's also a case to organize pages by faction.
If Walter is the same in the manga then yeah, put him under Integra. I'm ambivalent on Pip's placement, though I have a preference for narrative importance over being part of the same faction.
Keep Monika. It's looking like the Kirby page'll be kept, though I'll let anyone else who wants to voice their opinion chime in before I suggest any replacement quotes for the main VG page.
I vaguely recall initial discussion stated something about Manga!Walter was problematic, but can’t remember what it was.
EDIT: Okay so it was one of Lighty’s EPs, he didn’t really elaborate on why. Maybe someone familiar with the manga could weigh in?

I know it and I double checked the last chapters!
I guess if we're sure both versions are identical, he can be moved up.
Both TMNT and Ninjago pics got consenseous on the crowner, is it possible to someone add and tag both of them ?
Found this on Gilmore Girls
Magnificent Bitch: Trix. Emily's skills in manipulating people sometimes get her into this territory as well, although when actually confronted with her mother-in-law, she stands no chance.
Was this approved?
I recommend Enlightened Antagonist for Zaheer, and either Mage Killer or Visionary Villain for Amon.
It is I, the narrator, categorising addict and writer of books you haven't read.Agreeing with those suggestions.
I prefer Visionary Villain for Amon, agree with your suggestion for Zaheer.
Thank you

In honor of Akira ToriyamaCool. I will change them later after work.
Fan-Preferred Couple cleanup threadI have a cut to make that I'm sad to see go but also can't really abide on the list anymore:
- Hannibal: Dr. Hannibal Lecter himself maintains a sense of charm and genteelness that is unmatched in other portrayals, despite being a cannibalistic Serial Killer. Hannibal delights in nothing more than "winding others up to watch them go" and manipulates events, gaslighting people and driving them to insanity or horrible deeds simply to watch what will unfold. Manipulating the FBI perfectly, especially Will Graham who Hannibal fixates on, he manages to elude suspicion for a frighteningly long time, even triggering one captured FBI agent with a trigger to shoot Dr. Frederick Chilton, whom he has a special contempt for. Hannibal also manipulates the dysfunctional Verger siblings until their relationship is at a bloody head before he mutilates and paralyzes the sadistic Mason Verger solely due to dislike of him. Hannibal does rouse himself to save the life of Will from a vengeful Mason later, and in the series finale proves his care for Will and desire for them to become a murderous couple when he rescues Will from the Red Dragon killer. A murderer with a god complex and Satanic Archetype, Hannibal is nevertheless an audacious manipulator with a captivating presence on the screen, ever joyful to string people along to his whims.
Lecter is brilliant, charming, witty...but oh, oh so fucking horrible and I think he goes too far. For just a few of the standout things:
- He regularly tricks unknowing people into indulging in cannibalism
- He aids, abets and oftentimes encourages psycho killers to continue their villainy and target even women and children
- He locks a woman away for multiple years and tricks everyone into thinking she's dead
- He manipulates a traumatized young girl into trusting him, then kidnaps her and spends months brainwashing her into suicidal ideation solely so he can slash her throat in front of the only man who cares about her
- He refuses to let a cancer-ridden, terminally ill woman euthanize herself, forcibly saving her life because he flipped a coin and decided to keep her alive and suffering
- He puts the idea in Mason's head to medically violate his sister Margot, abort her baby, and sterilize her; while Hannibal doesn't directly orchestrate all this, it's part of his endgoal to sow discord between the siblings and he knowingly plants the knowledge in Mason's head that Margot is pregnant, knowing that Mason is a misogynistic psychopath who will do something horrible to her
Hannibal as a character is not inherently unable to qualify for this trope just because he's a serial killer or cannibal—the film one is fine to stay, and I been meaning to check the book one as well—and the show one is very charming and has redeeming traits here and there, but the fact of this show is that it drives home repeatedly that Hannibal is a sadist and the steps he takes for his manipulations go way, way too far for me to feel comfortable with him being listed.

WHAT A WONDERFUL DAY!Zaheer suggestion and Visionary Villain for Amon
Cut Hannibal
Yeah, from what I gather he's a cool character with the charm and brains to keep but yeesh, what you're putting down for his crimes gets pretty revolting and I think pushes the envelope too far to keep him, even if other incarnations can stay for lack of getting as visceral.
Cut Show!Hannibal
"No running in the halls!"An awesome villain but sadly he shows being charismatic as crap won’t save you from being too vile
Cut Hannibal
Cut show Hannibal.
What, like it's hard?Cut Hannibal.
You can only write so much in your forum signature. It's not fair that I want to write a piece of writing yet it will cut me off in the midHonestly I would have overlooked most of this but his hand in what happened to Margot is just too much
And yes Ravok the book on very much counts in my opinion
If you want my help with that feel free to contact me
