The Garfield Movie has apparently grossed $22 Million overseas already.

Which do we see doing better? IF or Garfield?

Well Garfield is a recognizable IP unlike IF which I think is entirely original. Plus Garfield’s marketing has been more noticeable so I’m gonna go with Garfield.

And early tracking had it in the neighborhood of $40 Million, about 5 million ahead of Garfield.

Source for IF is deadline: https://deadline.com/2024/04/ryan-reynolds-if-box-office-opening-projection-1235894892/

Source for Garfield is also Deadline. Says Furiosa should provide stiff competition. https://deadline.com/2024/05/furiosa-garfield-box-office-1235904173/

I kinda wonder if Mutant Mayhem should count if it includes merchandising.

[up][up]As I've heard it said: you can track the generations that grew up on video games, by how much less scorn the movie adaptations have for their source. Turns out, a movie made by people who like Mario will be a better adaptation of Mario. Who'd'athunkit?

[up] If it did, an article said the movie made a billion or more with its toys.

[up][up][up] That was the reasoning for Deadline to include it, along with PAW Patrol. The articles noted those movies are partially Merchandise-Driven to sell a toyline, while Barbie, Mario and the superhero movies "though rich with merchandise sales, didn’t have greenlights contingent on consumer products."

What a bummer this week's box office was. I really liked The Fall Guy, deserved more. And a 25 year old movie beating everything else (compare to the previous re-release - and I attended that one, unlike this year - in the middle of the Dump Months but only managing fourth place) shows audiences not caring much for what's in theaters.

Like the whole deal of Barbie is that it's merch driven.

I mean, it is a movie based on a toy.

It's important to keep in mind that licensing for something like Barbie or the TMNT goes well beyond just a movie. If a movie can push merchandise, those merchandise earnings are considered a profit of the movie.

Why sell one thing when you can sell several at the same time?

It's not to say Barbie would have been considered a flop without merchandising—the movie was tremendously successful and almost unviversally liked. But it also helped sell a lot of toys, and those things are factored into its profits.

Just like advertising is already included as a cost of the film, even though it is separate from the more specific film budget.

That's why TMNT and Barbie are so high on the list.

Oppenheimer sold a hell of a lot of tickets, but probably a lot fewer toys than Mario, Barbie, or the TMNT.

That's also part of why those I Ps (this was Barbie's first traditional live action feature, but there are countless cartoons) are pushed a lot—because they represent multiple sales at once. So they get revived quite frequently.

Barbie had merch, but not to the level of TMNT or Paw Patrol, which had mainstream kids toys and numerous brand deals with food and stuff like that, while most of the Barbie movie's merchandise was more along the lines of premium, adult-collector-targeted stuff, not the kinda thing you'd see Target shelves stocked full of next to the regular Barbie stuff.

Which makes sense considering Barbie, despite its basis, is not actually a kids' movie.

CNBC is predicting this summer’s box office to be fairly low due to a lack of content. (GLARES AT STUDIOS WHO DID NOT COOPERATE WITH UNIONS)

[up][up] And adding to the explanation: Deadline said PAW Patrol and TMNT were basically greenlit to promote a toyline (the former only got the big screen treatment because the Paramount CEO knew its TV success meant big merch sales, and the latter was a cartoon because Playmates Toys suggested so; compare to Barbie, that while based on a toy is in no way a long ad, and in fact mocks the product often), so those were the only two movies that they felt the need to add the "Merchandise" tab to the profits table.
