A Polish judge named Tomasz Szmydt sought asylum in Belarus due to being "persecuted" in Poland. He's involved in a case under the PiS government involving smearing against other judges who are against the party.

He told the press that he doesn't want to be in Poland as pro-Ukraine countries are dragging Poland into war.

Back then, ex-Polish soldier Emil Czeczko sought asylum in Belarus. But in 2021, he's found dead. Minsk said that he offed himself.

Would like to make a Caucasus (region), but the Georgian Dream Party is set to pass an anti-foreign agent law through the Georgian parliament. Critics are saying that it'll clamp down on opposition groups.

Irakli Kobakhidze insists that it'll make Georgia more stable, which I don't buy since the guy's pro-Russian.

That's an odd thing to focus on. The important thing is: What does the law actually say? Because at the end of the day a good law proposed by a pro-russian is still a good law, and a bad law proposed by someone who is pro-West is still a bad law.

So, what does the proposed law actually say? Does anyone know?

It is a variation on the ever-popular foreign agent law.

President wants to veto it, but GD has a huge number.

According to the law... (I'll quote the BBC):

NG Os and independent media that receive more than 20% of their funding from foreign donors would have to register as organisations "bearing the interests of a foreign power".

They would also be monitored by the Justice Ministry and could be forced to share sensitive information - or face hefty fines of up to 25,000 GEL ($9,400; £7,500).

Protesters are concerned that the legislation would be used by the government to suppress its opponents. Parallels have also been drawn with an authoritarian bill which came into force in Russia in 2012, and which the Kremlin has since used to clamp down on dissidents.

Opposition parties say the law could harm Georgia's attempt to join the European Union (EU), which has given it candidate status. The EU has warned the bill could jeopardise further progress within the bloc.

Basically it's like the Russian foreign agent law passed in 2012. That kind of law painted Dmitry Muratov, Mikhail Kasyanov and Russian human rights NGO Memorial as foreign-controlled agents.

Of course, if it's implemented well, it should be fine. But considering the stance of the GDP, I have huge amounts of salt that I wanna throw around.

Found out from the BBC that someone shot PM Fico in Handlova.

From what I heard, the gunman who shot at Fico is against what he's been doing (in term of policies), especially on state media.

Pro-Moscow propaganda is painting his actions as being pro-Ukraine and claims that he has a wife who's from Ukraine.

Meanwhile, others claim he's part of pro-Russian militants, so I guess he thought Fico wasn't pro-Russian enough?

That is what is claimed about his background (that he attended their meetings). About his stated motives there are claims that he was against the disbandment of Radio and Television of Slovakia. (He also founded a "Movement Against Violence"…)

Radio and Television of Slovakia would have been replaced by STVR under the Television and Radio Act.

Though just because something is stupid doesn't mean Putin might not have tried it.

Can we be a little more careful about phrasing, please?

Criticising Fico's policies and relationship with Putin is on-topic, but doing so in such strong language when he's still "fighting for his life" (to quote news sources) after an assassination attempt can get a little too close to gravedancing and may break the forum rules.

Fico's party is now starting to blame the liberals for what happened, despite Slovak president Zuzana Čaputová calling for such blame games to stop in her press conference.

Of course it's the liberals. Certainly not the pro-Putin party in charge. Couldn't be.

It's rather disheartening, seeing that Fico's party used to actually be a social-democratic group beforehand - though a quick search tells me this is despite the main body of SMER and because of the minor left-leaning parties they've absorbed.
