Repeating my question since we're on a new page but does anyone have any laptop recommendations? Ones that aren't HP or Mac with decent storage.

Usage and budget?

Mostly just browsing the internet but I also use my current laptop to watch anime and other media and to play games (Not high end ones. I'm primarily a console/mobile gamer. Most games I play don't tend to have very high requirements to run.) on occassion. As for budget I'm currently trying to save but for perspective my current laptop cost me $329 dollars not including shipping (Though I believe it was on sale at the time so I don't know the normal price.), has 8GB of memory and 256 of storage and it does what I need it to do just fine. I'd say most of my laptops in the past have been sub-$500 and most of them I haven't gotten a lot of years out of. I'll admit my bad habits (Eating and drinking while using, not keeping them clean, overcharging, using them in bed, etc.) almost certainly contribute to the wear and tear/how fast I go through them so that's definitely something to work on but I'm thinking maybe it's finally time to go for something a little less cheap. I'm willing to shell out up to maybe $1.5k (I'd have to save a few paychecks for that though and tough through with my current one.) though ideally I'd want something cheaper than that. Maybe in the $500-$1k range though cheaper could be nice too. Something that could handle a fall would be nice too. I don't tend to drop my laptop often since it rarely leaves my bed but it has happened before.

1500 dollars definitely sounds way too much for what you describe. You should easily find something for half that price.

Tl;dr - The image of things like a piano, a clay sculpture, paint cans and an arcade machine being crushed in a hydraulic press and then the shiny new gadget is revealed in their place is not sitting well with many.

Well, that is one stupid ad. I mean even without the fact that it plays right in to the current AI related fears. It just really stupid.

It is also being negatively compared to their 1984 ad.

People have been talking about their latest products for years already, I think the ad is more likely to make people switch to Samsung or Microsoft or even Nokia when they're to buy a new phone.

I would assume that the Apple Ad's intention is that it's meant to symbolism fusion. The items are being squeezed together, with the Ipad being the end result of their unification.

Of course, the imagery is rather violent and destructive, so I can certainly see how people interpreted it a different way.

Oh yes, that was the intention: this product represents all the creativity of all these things in one place.

But they made the whole thing way too visceral, so all anyone picks up is the destruction, rather than the result.

They also did it at a time when people are increasingly worried about AI generation, which makes for a much worse look.

Finally found time to read the article on that backdoor. Man, that's a sneaky one.

• The backdoor wasn't in the source code itself, but hidden already-compiled (and encrypted) among files used in the build process
• The "main" file that injects the backdoor into the compiled library was absent from the shared code repository, only present in "pre-packaged" archives of the source code
• The backdoor was only injected into a narrow field of "target" platforms
• The payload was in code executed as soon as the infected library is loaded, but only triggers if the process loading it is the SSH server.

Google Search adds a “web” filter, because it is no longer focused on web results: Google Search now has an option to search the "web," which is not the default anymore.

The long and short of it is that Google will now display an AI-generated answer box at the top, sometimes aggregated from the top few results for the search, and links will be way below the fold (or two).

Google's AI model is still in its experimental phase, but will nonetheless be pushed out to all US users, and soon to the whole world.

This could also be bad news for website owners, who may see traffic plummet as people get their answers from the AI box rather than clicking through to a website, and simply move on without digging deeper.

Our work computers use Bing, which already does that. It's annoying when we're trying to do something NSFW; while it's easy enough to scroll past, you need to pay attention to not mistake it for a real result.

I gave up on using Google long ago. Right now, my default search engine is Stract, which is an indie project to make an ethical search engine, and which takes steps to downrank pasted pages, SEO and AI crap, and the giant content farms and social media that dominate the web; among other things, this means it never shows results from the site formerly known as Wikicities and later as Wikia, for which we all say thankya. However, it's still in early days; the index is patchy and fuzzy matching is nonexistent. This makes it feel like searching back in the late 1990s and early 2000s - you never know quite what you'll find, which makes the web feel interesting and big again, but also makes it rather difficult if you're looking for something specific.

My backup is DuckDuckGo, which ye are probably aware of. That's the one I used after abandoning Google.
