How much can we discuss it without getting thumped?

TV tropes has... erm... super strict policies regarding entities that have underage characters in sexual situations. They were banned from Google ads once due to related report from some moral guardians and so now they are overly cautios and ban anything even remotly fitting.

Hot take, but I'm glad it's gone. I was watching the anime because I'd heard it was a yuri magical girl series, but then Nero-Alice showed up and... let's just say Troubling Unchildlike Behavior doesn't even begin to cover it. I dropped the show immediately after, I felt like I'd watched something illegal.

I'm far from a puritanical person, I've seen some fairly shocking things and not batted an eye, but that was a bridge too far.

[up] I don't remember anything that objectionable in JoJo, though in all fairness I've only watched up to Part 5, and I know there are three more parts (with a fourth currently in syndication).

On a lighter note, now that I'm here... I admittedly haven't read that much yuri manga, but I do want to. What would you all recommend? I want to read something that's slow-burn without annoying the reader, and maybe a little angst too. Bonus points if one of the characters is trans — I think that'd warm my lonely little heart.

But I'd go for anything. It doesn't have to be that specific.

[up] Stardust Telepath is not a yuri manga. It's a Pseudo-Romantic Friendship manga which will probably end with an extremely inconclusive "They might date, maybe?"

Chimidoro Ice Cream', on the other hand, is a yuri manga. You can tell because the two female leads actually kiss in the first chapter, and then keep doing it.

As for magical girl yuri, if you like JRPG then there's Blue Reflection: Second Light.

If you want another Manga Time Kirara series, besides Chimidoro Ice Cream, that is actually a yuri manga, there's Convenient Semi-Friend. I didn't particularly care for that one, though. Chimidoro still has that Kirara charm to it, whereas Semi Friend just gives me trashy relationship melodrama vibes.

Chiming in to give my two cents that if you just want textual confirmation of the relationship then Witch from Mercury is fine, but the chemistry is nothing to write home about and it's not worth watching if all you want out of it is a lesbian plot. There are substantially better options and no need to sit through a crunched, confused Gundam series for that.

As for recommendations, it sounds like you'd really enjoy Yagate Kimi ni Naru (or Blooming Into You), where one of the main characters is something in the neighborhood of demisexual or aro-spec. The currently airing Sasayaku You ni Koi wo Utau (or Whisper Me A Love Song) is something of a spiritual successor to YagaKimi and I probably wouldn't recommend reading them both at once, but if you want one that's a bit less refined than YagaKimi (in both good and bad ways) then that's one to check out. Also if you prefer music angst over theater angst.

Unfortunately I don't know any yuri manga off the top of my head with a trans protagonist, but I'd be interested in hearing about it if anyone else does.

[up] Whats you definition of yuri with trans protagonist? Should both M Cs be biologically female or pair of trans woman + woman also counts?

I still can't believe we have four musically-inclined yuri or yuri-bait shows this season: Jellyfish, Seiyuu Radio, Whisper Me a Love Song, and Hibike Euphonium. That last is the most "Bait"-y. Eupho isn't going to do anything more than tease with Reina and Kumiko. Of the other three, the one outright labeled as yuri is also the tamest. Jellyfish had a confession and kiss (well, on the cheek) in episode 5. Seiyuu had the shared bath and something a bit more than skinship in episode 3. Meanwhile, in Whisper, the main couple isn't together yet, and it seems as though they are going for soap opera-level romantic complications.

[up][up] Sorry, I don't quite follow. If you mean, do I count a series with a trans man as one of the leads as yuri, I wouldn't think so.

It's been fun.

Personally I thought Witch From Mercury had some very hard hitting moments with the main couple, so I'd definitely give it a recommend.

Stardust Telepath is not a yuri manga. It's a Pseudo-Romantic Friendship manga which will probably end with an extremely inconclusive "They might date, maybe?"

It self-describes as Yuri so it counts imo. Just have to get into the mode of "forehead touching as a metaphor for kissing".

"Yuri with a trans lead" to me would mean one of the main characters is a trans woman, not necessarily both.

If one of the people in the pairing is a trans man, it's not yuri, it's straight. Confused why that came up.

Childhood Friend Yuri is a short comic series where one of the girls is trans.

In regards to the whole Witch from Mercury thing.

1. I just wanted to say that I thought it was really good.

2. I think it is kind of important that we get more "yuri" anime/manga where the lesbian relationship isn't the sole focus. So the execs trying to backtrack is very disappointing from that standpoint.

[up][up][up][up][up][up] Correct me if I am wrong, but trans X means "a person of the opposite sex biologically who considers themselves of X or wants to trasnsition". So your point means "if one of the girls considers themselves a guy it does not count". While my point was if there is a character who is biologically male but of female gender (I.e. like MC and her girlfriend in Wanderting Son), does it count.

Or is it me who mixed up the terms?

No, you're right. But the important part is how the character views themselves, so a relationship between a cis girl and a trans girl is yuri (or in general terms, just a lesbian/sapphic relationship), while a relationship between a cis girl and a trans man is a straight relationship.

It's been fun.

One of the advantages of Yuri is that it tends to be more flexible, lewd pun not intended.

Witch from Mercury is absolutely yuri. The romantic relationship between the two female leads is the emotional core of the show. It just happens to also be a giant mech battle anime.

[up][up] In this case Wandering Son will fit the "GL with trans character" bill because of Nitori/Lily - Anna official pair.

Rinne no Lagrange is also a mecha show with a yuri core, but it's more of a thruple. I'd say it's borderline yuri, there's no het romances among the leads, and their chemistry is pretty solid with some definite yuri moments. It's a lot of slice of life mixed in, so it's no political thriller.
