The Next Xbox got announced at the Game Awards:

Is whoever's in charge of naming Xbox consoles trying to kill the line? 360 wasn't too badnote , but One seemed to have been designed to be confused with the original, and now Series X sounds like an accessory. Or maybe a spinoff? Possibly a service. But definitely not a mainline entry. Didn't we learn anything from the Wii U?

Thinking about it, Xbox Series X implies there's more of these that tackle different priorities for a console.

...except that makes no sense because isn't it supposed to be a be-all end-all system?

Probably should've went with Xbox Super X or something.

It looks like part of a chimney was cut off to make a game console.

It's been 3000 years…

Since the Gamecube was a cube and this looks like a rectangular prism

How about Xbox Prism? That sounds pretty legit

At first the design looks stagnant or even regressive, I'd have to assume you can lay it sideways but even still I think the size is exaggerated because of the vertical position. Using the controller as reference it looks to be about 12x5x5, actually quite smaller in volume than than anything not Nintendo. Of course, this entire generation has seen console gaming and PC gaming blurring together, and the Series X definitely looks like a gaming tower.

The name Series X may indicate they will offer different designs at different price points, much like they did with the One S and the One X. I'm thinking that since true 4K media is really not taking off that strongly (the cost of 4K media, readers, displays and cables is still rather cost prohibitive), that will be one of the major dividing lines.

The controller looks very similar to the Xbox One controller. That’s fine, since the One controller was pretty good already. That’s all I’ve gleamed from this video :x

Pointing out that someone in the TGA thread realized you can abbreviate this one to XSeX or SeXBox, because apparently they learned nothing from all the “XBOne” jokes.

[up]Or they're counting on it. Any publicity is good publicity.

Is whoever's in charge of naming Xbox consoles trying to kill the line? 360 wasn't too bad , but One seemed to have been designed to be confused with the original, and now Series X sounds like an accessory. Sony's console names are the most extreme form of Boring, but Practical, while Nintendo and Sega's are quirky and memorable. Microsoft aims for both and gets neither.

Interestingly, XBox was originally a placeholder title, a contraction of DirectX-Box, because it was a box based around DirectX; however, focus groups thought XBox was a better name than any of the proposed product names.

XBox 360... I guess they wanted to have a number but not just copy Sony's approach.

XBox One got its name from the One Microsoft strategy, a marketing and sales strategy within Microsoft to have One OS To Rule Them All, which would be used across PCs, tablets, smartphones, and game consoles. It took a bit longer than expected, but we are seeing this happen with things like cross-buy and GamePass coming to Windows. Too bad the term itself was in widespread use to refer to the suffixless XBox.

XBox Series X sounds like some variant of the XBox One X, and yeesh I know the XBox Whatever line has always been basically a PC in a box with a controller, but they're even sounding like just PC accessories now.

Also I kind of love how Microsoft formally announces their new console and we're all just talking about what a terrible name it has.

XBOX was memetically infamous as being "hueg" despite it's just a bit slightly bigger than the competition and XBOX One being averagely the same (a bit) size as PS 4. Now they just like embrace the meme and straight up PC tower...

It is funny that after a little trial and error the controllers are just "if it ain't broke." X Box and Play Station have only cosmetic differences, while each Nintendo iteration is compatible with Game Cube controllers.

Ok, wait, so Xbox Series X ISN'T the name of the next Xbox?

And it's just going as Xbox?

Erm. Um. I'm just going to keep calling it the Xbox Prism.

It sounds like what I thought, they may be offering different specs or regular design updates like they did for the One S and One X rather than just one all-encompassing console. Gaming technology has become too fast and modular for consoles to keep up with 6-7 generational releases.

Microsoft in 2013: Here's the successor to the XBox 360, the XBox One!

Microsoft in 2019: Here's the successor to the XBox One, the XBox!

I swear, they're doing this on purpose now. How can a marketing team be so bad at naming things?
