Joker (2019)

What, a trailer that didn't do an obligatory 6-8 seconds of the trailer you're about to watch beforehand?

Dang this film must be something special.

I'm excited for this movie. Continuing the trend of villain protagonists in movies and in media in general.

It looks so dumb, but fuck it.

Yo, ok, nah, that trailer was actually lit. Go watch it.

I have my misgivings about this being about the Joker In Name Only but what its doing with him is a more grandiose, less creepy depiction of the character than we've had in at least 2 decades.

Love the little callbacks to the first movie

• Harley making the same shoot myself in the head gesture Arthur was fond of
• Doing the stair dance with Arthur
• Arthur still talking to a therapist or some sort of confidante off screen with the camera facing him
• I heard the music crescendo around 1 minute 45 seconds the way the second Joker trailer did
• Arthur still has his condition (which is interesting; I thought he started getting rid of his nervous tic once he embraced being a murderous psychopath, like a bittersweet acceptance of self finally let him overcome his disability; could be part of the Unreliable Narrator trope Arthur embodies)
• Harley holding the Smith & Wesson to Arthur's face similar to the revolver he was brandishing in the first film
• Arthur with the cigarette in his mouth (too bad for Phoenix's lungs but man is that an iconic pose for The Joker)
• Harley climbing the stairs with a depressed look the way Arthur did last time
• Arthur sprinting through the street (And apparently being chased by the same guy he saw in the Final Trailer, as well as himself in his full costume)
  • Heck the Clown Guy even got pancaked by oncoming traffic the same way Fleck did
• The sudden cut from Arthur to Joker, but this time it was the reverse with Joker and Harley cutting away to Fleck and Harley dancing in the "real world"

The question this brings though is - how much of these scenes are actually happening and how much is Arthur's psychosis? Realistically he'd never be let out of Arkham so soon after murdering a TV host on live broadcast. He's hallucinating being out and about with Harley, getting dressed up and putting makeup on.

How Harley's crazy and his crazy are going to interact though... this could be a typical lovestory and I'd dig that, not enough "Joker genuinely cares" stories out there. They seem to have upgraded Harley from manipulation victim to genuinely vibing with The Joker though so maybe she'll be in a more antagonistic role.

I had no particular care for Lady Gaga as an actor, but she's making Harley look like a fun and interesting character.

That glass lipstick smile was perfect, and whoever came up with it deserves a raise.

God I love when movies use old Sinatra-era music. It just puts a smile on my face and it suits The Joker well.

It’s been a while since I’ve been genuinely interested in watching a movie romance… And it’s between the freaking Joker and Harley Quinn…

Because yes, shockingly this trailer makes it look like these two people are actually in love. How they will balance that the Joker being, well, the Joker remains to be seen. But color me intrigued.

Inb 4 DC sonehow makes this Harley join a Sucide Squad as well.

The only times where Harley Quinn ever has a "healthy" relationship with the Joker is when she makes it clear she's in love with Joker not because he's a sad puppy... but because she genuinely loves his style. Which is crime, chaos, mayhem, and murder. And she doesn't pretend otherwise.

Thats how Harley operated in 2004 The Batman cartoon.

Harley even had a new backstory which made her a lot more unsympathetic, being the host of a trashy talk show and being an amateur psychologist.

She outright asks Joker to help murder someone who cancelled her show for justified reasons cause it was terrible and harmful. Her partnership with Joker was a lot more mutually romantic, with Joker enjoying how much of a lunatic she is, and Harley was the more evil of the duo with her friendship in that show's version of Ivy.

Man, 2004 The Batman had some great writing.

I still love that one episode where Joker dressed up as Batman. Based Batman who laughs.

I definitely did not expect the white tux. That looks very cool.

Yeah. That one caught my eye as well.

Mostly because I remember the last time Joker wore a white tux.

But he's already done something like that in-universe. Ain't nobody letting him come onto their show again.

Can't wait for Batman and Joker to fight in the tunnel of love.

It would be interesting to have the story of Joker inside his head... probably the only thing real is that he is still in Arkham... he probably fantasies over Harley giving him music, magic and removing him from his solitude but... how much of this is real and how much is only in his head?

He was the anarchy king of Gotham at the end of Joker but, probably.. only in his head...

So, first impressions!

On the one hand, it seems like this'll be played about as straight as the first installment. Sure, Never Trust a Trailer and all but that's the vibe I got. And I'm a little disappointed by that. Plus, more possibly romanticizing The Joker and all that but honestly at this point, I've more or less made peace with the fact that I just have to accept that when approaching these movies.

On the other hand...goddammit, this actually looks really promising! Once again, the cinematography is beyond incredible and I will say, it does look like it's gonna tell a new story, and not just the first one again.

I think Harley is real, because the "imaginary girlfriend" twist was already used in the previous movie.

Here's an idea: What if Harley's the one imagining this big old school romance with Arthur and all the fantastical looking scenes are in 'her' head?

Yeah, another reason that I'm more excited about this one is that the previous movie used pretty much every cliche (imaginary girlfriend, ambiguity about All Just a Dream) that I'm comfortable that they won't retread that particular ground in this one.

Also yeah, wow, I saw a Youtube thumbnail from a news channel talking about this. I don't remember seeing The Avengers films showing up in the news cycle.

I suspect James Gunn and the DCU people are chomping at the bit to find similar appeal right now.

The first Joker also had a lot of mainstream news attention. Granted, most of that attention was hand-wringing about how this would cause a bunch of incels, but hey, we take those wins when we get them.
