X is the actual main character of the Mega Man X series. It's named that way for a reason. Inafune wanted Zero to be the true main character, but that isn't what actually happened. Zero is the second most important, respectively, and finally did become the main character of his own series(Mega Man Zero). Sigma is the third most important, and obviously the main villain. It's quite an odd story.
I wasn't too bothered by Captain Marvel not being in 3, but there was a lot of major Marvel characters there already, including what is one of their most memorable for all time, Wolverine. Iron Man being there, along with Hulk, etc. Captain Marvel definitely is a notable "where are you?", but I'd argue Mega Man being gone hit worse, but only due to them cancelling Mega Man Legends 3 not long before MVC 3 got announced. I mean, him and Ryu being the current Capcom mascots also matter, but the timing was just awful.
It looks like they're making sure to give the Mega Man series back an actual Mega Man this time. I wonder if it was mostly due to backlash or they wanted to make a new moveset.

For all talk of the Fox-Embargo, I'm actually really confident that Deadpool and Doom will both end up in the game since those two characters have been more or less immune to Marvel's "depushing" of the X-Men and FF.
The switch from 3v3 to 2v2 is pretty surprising though.

I'm agreeing with your prediction. When I first saw the trailer, the head shape of the villain screamed Ultron for me. I'm giving you the credit for predicting Sigma, because I agree it would make sense.

Watched the trailer again, and man... it's just a bit derpy looking. Several steps down from the debut trailer Mv C 3 imo. Still happy the game exists and I'm eager to see some gameplay though.
Not really a lord of anything
My biggest issue with X being in (I'm assuming that he precludes all other similar characters) is that if we're getting a story mode where he interacts with the entire cast of both sides, since they're probably going with his early characterization, he is way too boring to have interesting interactions with everyone. See Project X Zone for examples of this.

That and the power-boosting thing we saw Ryu use was almost certainly an Infinity Gem/Stone (given the color, it's gotta be the Power Stone). So it seems we're right back to having a Capcom fighting game adaptation of Infinity War.

Tony not being dead and Carol lacking a buzzcut rules out adhering strictly to much of the recent comics continuity over the MCU. Newcomers-wise Kamala Khan's probably still a shoe-in, but Doreen Green's somewhat imperiled, and there's next to no chance for America Chavez or Cindy Moon or whatever, which is kind of disappointing. Jessica Jones is kind of dull contextually... and said MCU focus will almost certainly ignore Agent of Asgard's character revitalization of Loki.
On the other side of things, I sort of feel like playable Prowlers and repeated Felyne Village spin-offs + Stories appearances might override the series-director's (right) opinion Monster Hunter is completely contrary to MVC 3 by having some Servbot-esque Palico? Not easy to guess much else here, Capcom hasn't been doing hot on new English-side properties for a bit outside of MH.

With 2 vs 2 back I'm wondering if the rumor the assist character feature will return is true. There are a lot of characters like Wasp or Saki who might not warrant a full on playable character status but could still be included in this way.
