. I think this came from a promo art released some time after the Lonesome Road DLC.
Like all Fallout protagonists, the specifics of The Courier's appearance, skills, feats, and morality are all subject to the player's decisions, but all of them start the story by delivering a Platinum Chip for an unknown recipient, only to be ambushed, shot in the head, and then buried in a shallow grave. Surviving by a hair's breadth, the mystery of the Platinum Chip and their assailant becomes the driving questions of the game — if the player remembers to do the main quest, that is.
Lonesome Road adds further backstory to the Courier: they once delivered a package to a region called Ashton, not realizing that it actually contains ICBM activation codes. When they got close, the packaged transmitted those codes into the dormant nuclear missiles beneath Ashton, detonating them. The region is now a jagged, radioactive badlands constantly blasted by a sandstorm that literally flays what's left of the local residents.
