Scrappy would be great as a series drop-in character, like The Hex Girls are.

I think trying to consistently insert him into to the group of five would be difficult, though.

If they did rework Scrappy into the current Scooby Doo line without making him the butt of all jokes, how would Scrappy be like as a character?

Weirdly, there's a Scooby reference book that lists Scrappy's age as 5, definitely full-grown in dog years. Was the "gland disorder" joke in the first live-action movie actually serious?

The writer for Scooby Doo and the 13th Ghost has expressed a desire to write a film that would rehabilitate Scrappy, given the positive response they got to Flim Flam's appearance.

The mistake they made with Scrappy originally was completely restructuring the show to accommodate him. I think Scrappy could be fine if he's not used as a crutch, and if he doesn't displace the rest of the gang. Bring him in as an occasional guest star.

For what it's worth, James Gunn has actually apologized for making Scrappy a bad guy upon learning plenty of younger fans actually liked him and got upset when they saw the movie.

James Gunn worked on the first Scooby Doo movie?

Both A Pup Named Scooby Doo and Scoob stated that Shaggy and Scooby met when they were a child and a puppy. If Scooby and Scrappy aged in dog years then Scooby would be an elder by now, but he acts and looks remarkably young and vital, despite having an unhealthy diet and being constantly stressed out.

Especially since overall Shaggy seems to be college aged now.

Scooby's entire family is a bit abnormal in most iterations.

Mystery Inc. has him explicitly be a descendant of a god.

[up][up]I think they were operating on cartoon logic of dogs aging the same as humans do.

Anyone wonder why they stopped showing Scooby's relatives after A Pup Named Scooby Doo? Considering how a lot of the 1970s and 1980s shows showed his family, it is weird how modern stuff ignores Scooby's family.

As a brief aside, I think the best way to deal with the show in question besides being cautious about adding to it's view count is to give critique definitely, move on and while elsewhere on line helping to make sure people are aware of other more pleasant shows.

Like say Adventure Time Fionna & Cake, Tiny Toons University and My Adventures With Superman for starters.

On other platform well some of my favorites, Moon Girl & Devil Dinosaur, X-Men '97, Unicorn Academy, Polly Pocket, Barbie A Touch of Magic. Even the recent Strawberry Shortcake series Berry in the Big City is pretty good.

But more on topic, Scooby-Doo and Krypto Too, well if it goes back up or put on Tubi, definitely worth watching and I'll probably get a copy for myself. Especially one for my stepmom who is a Superman fan.

[up][up] After A Pup Named Scooby Doo they wanted more or less to return to basics for awhile. I can only imagine that Scooby's extended family hasn't fit in with how anyone has wanted to approach the material so far.

Which one of Scooby's relatives were more well known? Like, most of his relatives didn't really have enough staying power or popularity with the audience.

[up]By that logic, why were Fred, Daphne, Velma, and Shaggy's family members still shown in modern Scooby productions? It's not like their families are any more popular and well known than Scooby's.

Yeah, I find that kind of weird. Like, Fred, Daphne, Velma and Shaggy are allowed to have their family members show up, but not Scooby?

My assumption was that the reaction to Scrappy made them afraid to do anything with Scooby’s relatives.

"Hey, gimme a minute to get to know everyone, 'kay, Brainy?" "Of course, but please allow me to get a word in, too, bzz."

Though their family is also constantly changing, with Shaggy's family the most consistently shown and thus the most consistently changed. In the SD:WAY era, Shaggy's parents looked like him, and were rich enough to own a plantation home for Shaggy's sister's wedding. In the Pup series, they were Coolsville hip cats, and Shaggy's dad was an officer. Then Mystery Inc. happened and they were idle rich folks. Fred's parent were just suburbanites named Skip and Peg, but then became Brad Chiles and Judy Reeves in Mystery Inc. Velma's parents in Pup were just generic geniuses, but in Mystery Inc., they were owners of a Ripley's Believe or Not style museum. Daphne's parents are just standard rich people, though in the WAY era, they owned a bubble company. There was also the live action movie, Daphne and Velma, where Daphne's dad was an overprotective helicopter parent who was responsible for doing everything for her in secret. And of course, all that went out the window with the Velma series. It's the only series where neither Shaggy nor Daphne were portrayed as the rich kids, despite being consistently having a rich immediate and extended family throughout the ages.

Scooby having all these relatives raises some potentially uncomfortable questions. Like, how do dog families work in a world where they can talk but are also still pets and go where their owners go?

It's a thorny issue as it depends on how much the Scooby universe interacts with HB.

Because for instance Scooby has interacted with Jonny Quest, where Bandit is a non sapient dog. But he also has interacted with Courage and Dyno-Mutt, the former a sapient who is overall treated like a standard dog the latter a fully sapient talking dog acnowledged as such by everyone but he is also a cyborg muddling the issue.

He also has interacted with Mumbly, who has been both a villain and a policeman, but in both cases he was treated like a member of human society. Ditto for Hong Kong Phooey.

If we are using the Disney comparison where Goofy would be a 'human' to Pluto's 'monkey' in the evolutive scale of dogs Scooby would be a missing link.

With Bandit a Pluto and Mumbly or Hong Kong Phooey a Goofy.

In Pup, his family was apparently wealthy to afford clothes and a jeweled collar valuable enough to be worth stealing, so in certain continuities, they're treated like those animals who were gifted property by their owners, but are smart enough to actually utilize them.

Though I usually think they go the Yogi Bear route, where animals are sapient enough to be interacted and communicated with, but they're still treated and regarded as normal animals by those who don't know them. So in Jellystone Park, Ranger Smith who has to interact with him constantly treats him like an annoying pet (at least until you get crossovers), but all the tourists treat him as a wild animal to be shot at or attacked for self-defense and never draw attention to the fact that they're smart.
