Do you have trouble recognizing when you've written a Zero-Context Example?

Not sure if you really have a Badass Bookworm or just a guy who likes to read?

Well, this is the thread for you. We're here to help you will all the finer points of example writing. If you have any questions, we can answer them. Don't be afraid. We don't bite. We all just want to make the wiki a better place for everyone.

Useful Tips:

  • Make sure that the example makes sense to both people who don't know the work AND don't know the trope.
    • Wrong: The Mentor: Kevin is this to Bob in the first episode.
    • Right: The Mentor: Kevin takes Bob under his wing in the first episode and teaches him the ropes of being a were-chinchilla.
  • Never just put the trope title and leave it at that.
    • Wrong: Badass Adorable
    • Right: Badass Adorable: Xavier, the group's cute little mascot, defeats three raging elephants with both hands tied behind his back using only an uncooked spaghetti noodle.
  • When is normally far less important than How.
    • Wrong: Big Bad: Of the first season.
    • Right: Big Bad: The heroes have to defeat the Mushroom Man lest the entirety of Candy Land's caramel supply be turned into fungus.
  • A character name is not an explanation.

In Girls Bravo, Ayako Kawasumi voices Miharu Sena Kanaka for the drama CDs and would later return to voice her for the anime adaptation a few months later.

Since Role Reprise can count in cases of less than 5 years if it's an adaptation into another medium (such as from a film to a video game), does this fit?

Enemy Scan: Does scanning this still fit even though it's not for enemies and it's Power Incontinence? And it's only one stat?

  • Numbers: When Jem looks into a person's eyes, she sees a number unique to that person, their exact date of death.

...

Note to Self: then these "boy seems numbers over people / girls" should fit too, while this is untargetted to a person?

  • Super Prototype: The Zeus Silhouette is a prototype positron cannon designed for the Destiny Gundam but has never seen any combat use prior to the film's events according to the novel.

I deleted this because while super it didn't say it was a prototype. I was PM'd that it was stated as a prototype in the novelization.

Before adding back, is it still misuse of Super Prototype if it doesn't have later versions it's shown to be superior to? It could just was well be a Flawed Prototype explaining why it was never deployed prior and need to replace the barrel frequently unlike similar weapons.

Can Audience-Alienating Ending be used to refer to the end of Story/Seasonal arcs? Or only the series as a whole? To give an example:

[up][up][up][up][up][up] I can safely say that the idea that the Lion King fandom hates Simba and considers him to be an abusive parent who doesn't care about his son isn't true, so the Never Live It Down entry can be cut as well. From what I can tell, the troper who wrote that entry projected their own feelings about Simba onto the fandom as a whole.

Thanks for the feedback.

Here are two questions that I have:

Do you guys think that Grandpa Gruff is Draco in Leather Pants? Sure, he isn't villain, but they're some fans (like this one) that portray him as better parental figure to Gallus than he is in actual show.

Does the Diamond Dogs from the same show count as newly created Our Gnolls Are Different trope? Because they're anthropomorphic canine fantasy race just like gnolls, and when I first saw this trope before it was launched, I immediately thought: "Diamond Dogs?!surprised (mind blown)".

I need some consensues here because I am of two minds. Over in YMMV.My Adventureswith Superman, this was posted:

  • They Copied It, So It Sucks!: People were quick to negatively compare Lois' anger at Clark for keeping his identity as Superman a secret from her to similar plot points in Masters of the Universe: Revelation and Invincible. Considering it wasn't received very well in either of the latter to begin with, the incident in this series only served to make people even more tired of the trend along with the constant fanbase arguments that spawn from said trend.

I have seen this comparison, but I don't think it is factually correct so I deleted it. Please correct me if I am wrong, but Lois has gotten angry at Clark for keeping his identity a secret in other adaptions.

Maybe it could be reworked as an Older Than They Think entry?

@ Mariofan 99: About your questions regarding Audience-Alienating Ending:

  • Is there a reason Fanon Discontinuity wouldn't be a better fit (they reject/ignoire it despite enjoying later seasons)?
  • Other mid series AAE state it hurt the popularity of the later installments. Is that the case with your example? (If not it seems below the level of backlash for AAE.)

From Characters.The Simpsons Extended Family:

  • Jerk with a Heart of Jerk:
    • Abe and Mona learned about Herb around the time they were married. Her response to this was to use it as an excuse to cheat on him invoking Good Adultery, Bad Adultery. However, she continued to hypocritically hold Herb over Abe’s head, even after she became pregnant and didn’t even know if Homer was Abe’s. Once Abe realized he would always be Forgiven, but Not Forgotten and Stopped Caring their resulting bad marriage caused her to eventually join the hippy movement where she never stopped cheating on him.
    • Her response to Homer accusing her of being a Disneyland Dad was to change her will not only manipulating Homer into putting himself and his family in danger, but showing that she did just come back to confront Burns.

Since the show most commonly intends to portray Mona as being a loving parent to Homer, perhaps this would fit better under Unintentionally Unsympathetic.

[up]Whatever it is, it isn't Jerk with a Heart of Jerk. That trope describes itself as a subversion of a Jerk with a Heart of Gold. A character is established as a jerk, it's implied they might have a nicer side, but then it's discovered that, no, they were actually just being a jerk all along. The example reads like it was written by someone who doesn't like the character and is using a trope they don't understand to complain.

Does this count as Paper Tiger?

The Empire is the most technically advanced nation on the planet and has the largest army & navy... unless you compare it to their population. Aggressive expansion and a lack of interest of young people in the military have left them overextended. Technological development has stagnated. Right now they rely more on reputation and there is a credible fear by higher-ups that if they try to annex any more territory they may bite off more than they can chew. That said, they still have the firepower to crush small groups.

I don't know if someone will answer this question of mine (considering that how many people from abroad know this Polish TV show), but I have one issue with our Polish classic TV show for children, Teddy Drop Ear. Mainly, one of the Drop Ear friends, Piglet, is presented in some episodes as Jerk with a Heart of Gold while he's mainly a Nice Guy, and resident Jerks With A Hearts Of Gold tend to be other Drop Ear friends, Hare and Rabbit Twins. Does this change of Piglet character in some episode is a case of Jerkass Ball or Depending on the Artist?

Err... It says "prototype" right in the example (unless that's something you've added in yourself):

From Jurassic World: Chaos Theory:

  • Shout-Out: Darius is seen luring an Allosaurus in very similar way to how Claire Dearing lured Rexy out of her enclosure to combat the Indominus rex in Jurassic World.
Does this counts as Mythology Gag or Continuity Nod? Because I want to edit Chaos Theory page, but I'm not sure to what trope change above example. Can you help me?

Is this an example of Informed Wrongness? The entry for Informed Wrongness on Helluva Boss S2E2 "Seeing Stars" had an entry for Informed Wrongness that I removed out of the belief it was misuse on grounds of misrepresentation of the scene:

  • Informed Wrongness: That Blitzo was the one in the wrong - his conversation at the start of the episode is just an attempt to get Loona to improve her skills as a receptionist (the literal first impression most will get of IMP as a business), to which she flies completely off the handle and beats him bad enough to give him a black eye. To make matters worse, she's the one who first brings up 'why don't you just replace me?' as an attempt at emotional manipulation, making Blitzo's response come off more like he's just not playing her game anymore than any kind of genuine threat. By the end of the episode he apologizes to her but she responds with more physical abuse, hitting him in the face with the book and giving him a Groin Attack, implying that makes them even.
Edit Removal Reason: Calling it "emotional manipulation" is not only speculation, but a stretch, since its more accurately just something an angsty teen, like Loona is depicted as, would yell out when upset. So being told they actually are considering it is a dick move and, regardless of Loona's behavior, constitutes emotional abuse that many studies argue against when raising children, especially for someone Sour Outside, Sad Inside like Loona. Regardless of justification, you don't tell your kid you're going to replace them, even in jest.
Troper Providence 25 however readded it a month later, albeit removing the "emotional manipulation" bit.
Edit Restoration Reason: Re-added 'Informed Wrongness'. I disagree with Rebel Falcon's reason, because trauma is NOT an excuse or an defense to assaulting someone. Plus, she is not a angsty teen or a child, she's an ADULT. On top of that, the only reaction Loona had to the 'replace' line was a Flat "What". She was completely fine for the rest of the episode. If Loona was supposed to be in the right, then the writers did a poor job of it, simple as that.

So I bring it here to ask if this even is an example. Should it remain, or should it be removed again?

Is the sessuer version of Jeff the Killer being overshadowed by the GameFuelTv version an example of Adaptational Displacement or More Popular Spin-Off?

I also wonder which of the above tropes, Jane Arkensaw being the more popular Jane the Kiler then Jane Richardson counts as.

Can you still use Slipping a Mickey for when someone offers another character a pill lying about the effects when they are actually sedative/willpower-cancelling drugs?

About this example in Characters.Sabbat Of The Witch:

  • Deus Sex Machina: An unfortunate side-effect of her witch contract is that she has to masturbate. and she has no choice in the matter because she gets aroused at the inconvenient time. Once she is in a relationship with Shuuji, she substitutes masturbation with sex to subside her sexual urges. In her Restart route, this goes away so she doesn't have to worry about it.

Initially it was under A Date With Rosie Palms and it got removed when the trope turned into an index, but it was added again under Masturbation Means Sexual Frustration. I thought that the example wasn't about frustration but about a (supernatural) plot element forcing her to masturbate with no other way around it, so I moved it to Deus Sex Machina. Is that correct?

I found a Batman fan comic listed under the Comic Book section in You, Get Me Coffee. Since it’s strictly fan made, shouldn’t it be moved to Fan Works, or maybe Web Comics?
